In this solo episode of the New Music Business podcast, Ari untangles the complexities of royalties, registration, and publishing. After his social media video with the same message (“Don't cut your drummer into publishing”) went viral for the wrong reasons, Ari wanted to come on the show and break down the nuances of this advice. Tune in to get clear on the differences between publishing royalties and master royalties, which royalties session musicians are legally due, the importance of one-stop agreements, and how to fairly (or, more so, generously) compensate your session musicians.Read the article on Ari's Take: https://aristake.com/publishing-royalties/Chapters00:00 Understanding Music Publishing and Royalties02:55 The Role of Session Musicians in Music Creation05:55 Differentiating Between Master Royalties and Publishing09:09 The Importance of One-Stop Agreements11:59 Fair Compensation for Session Musicians15:12 Changing Industry Standards17:46 How Publishing Royalties Work Within Bands20:13 Why Session Musicians Are Not Considered Co-Writers22:20 Legally Entitled Radio Royalties for Session MusiciansEdited and mixed by Ari DavidsMusic by Brassroots DistrictProduced by the team at Ari's TakeOrder the THIRD EDITION of How to Make It in the New Music Business: https://book.aristake.com Hosted on Acast. When you think of Music City, you probably think of the big-name musicians who got their start here. But session musicians, studio musicians, and backing musicians are a huge part of what keeps the live music scene alive and thriving. These are the go-to musicians hired to perform in recording sessions or live performances. In this episode, we'll meet session musicians and a recording engineer to get an inside look at how the craft works. But first, we're talking about the vulnerabilities of our electricity grid with WPLN environmental reporter Caroline Eggers. Guests: Chuck Ainlay, music producer and recording engineer Derrek Phillips, Grammy Award-winning drummer Kristin Weber, fiddler and singer Amber Woodhouse, vocalist and saxophonist, one of the lead singers for Trigger Hippy
Andy has created a character called Norman Havelock, who was a forgotten 60s songwriter (not really, Andy made him up!) and Andy has written and recorded a concept album based on what Norman might have written if he were around today. He's used some of the UK's best sessions musicians and recorded all the basic tracks in an 8hr session, no rehearsal, just like it should be. It's orchestral 60s pop, strings, brass, Burt Bacharach/John Barry style songwriting - so not our usual focus! https://tfonh.bandcamp.com/album/whimsica-sardonica If you would like to support the podcast by purchasing a wonderful enamel mug, you can do that here: https://www.allyouneedisdrums.com/shop If you have enjoyed this podcast, please don't forget to leave a review! I am so excited to share my conversation with Candace Lacina of the "North" Americana Supergroup The Hello Darlins, to talk about the band's debut album Go By Feel, released on June 11, 2021. King, George Canyon, and The Road Hammers - to name just a few. Today on "Ask Simply Mary" Daniel elder asks "Does writing music actually get easier if you get high or is that just a myth?" I talk about my personal feelings and experiences with marijuana and songwriting with honesty. You may or may not agree and my answer may or may not surprise you. Johnny Adams asks "What advice would you give to an aspiring artist who has lost motivation to make new music?" I basically am talking about self-care here, and the need to be grounded at all times in order to be creative freely. Writers block can occur not only with lyricists but musicians as well. Amidst this pandemic, it is more important than ever to be grounded. It is also a very trying time for artists performers and creators. I not only touch on writers block but any block that you create within your life that is stopping you from doing something you love. Hopefully my advice can help someone out there step back and rethink their plans for the future in a new light. Farzam Mousavi asks "What is the difference between a session or studio musician and a life performer?" This is a really great question and it is some thing worth discussing. I do have my own experience to share and some thoughts to add to the pool. All this, today, on Ask Simply Mary Thank you so much to my streaming and financial supporters, I couldn't do it without you! Mary --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/simply-mary/message
Dennis Coffey is a legendary guitarist from Detroit - a highly coveted session musician for numerous artists and labels, including Motown. As a member of Motown's house band - the "Funk Brothers" - he played on some of its biggest hits by The Temptations, The Supremes, Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye and many others.. And in 1971, he had his own Top 10 instrumental hit – "Scorpio." Dennis talks about how Motown lost its signature sound after moving to L.A. and abandoning the Funk Brothers, how - despite all his success - he had to work on an assembly line at General Motors, and how he achieved success in a new career while still continuing in music.
We have our first ever returning guest on BTC. Ollie Dixon (virtually) calls in to discuss how the music industry has changed for him since our last chat. Hey everyone, hope you are all safe and with your loved ones at this difficult time. Nothing is stopping Before The Crowd though! In this episode I interview Oli Dixon about the role of session musicians in 2020. This interview took place before the Coronavirus outbreak, so we won't be diving into that in this episode. Listen to Oli as he talks about his worst gigs, how he recovered from them and how to build confidence in yourself as a musician. We talk about how to draw inspiration from other musicians, playing in the blues scene and general music chit chat. Stay safe, much love. Guy xx

After 'The Players' were inducted to the Musicians Hall of Fame in October, Andrew and Sean decided to dedicate a whole episode to these gods of country music. Behind every great solo performer, there is a killer session musician bringing their work to life. Just ask Dave Jenkins, Jr. - after all, he's made a career out of it. From Andy Bull to Reece Mastin, Vera Blue to Kirin J. Callinan all the way up to childhood hero Daniel Johns, the multi-instrumentalist has found himself either behind the kit or serving as the musical director for an impressive bevvy of names. In 2019, he's officially stepping out on his own under the moniker of Not A Boy's Name. So, how did we get here? With nearly a decade of history between us, we sat down with Dave at Forbes Street Studios in Woolloomooloo (AKA Sheep Dunny Cow Dunny) to see how an ambitious kid from the central coast dropped out of music and almost quit the game entirely before bouncing back in the most unexpected way. Special thanks to Forbes Street Studios, Universal Music Group and Maree Nordone. This week, Starling interviews three of the UK's leading session musicians, to find out what life is like on the road touring with major artists, and playing the planet's biggest venues. David Kyle Payne (Bass and backing vocals), Luke Marc Hughes (drums) and Charles Macdonald (guitar) are living what many would consider to be a dream life, playing stages such as the O2 in London with some of the biggest names in music. But what is life really like day-to-day for a session musician? How do you deal with stresses on the road, being too busy (or not busy enough) and sometimes difficult artists? More importantly, how do you become a session musician? Is it about more than being able to play? Starling's World is a podcast about making it in the creative industries. Every two weeks, rising star Starling interviews a creative industry professional at the top of their game, from songwriters to film makers, producers, managers and agents, right up to major label execs. Creativity is a bitch: it creeps up on you in the bath, it’s not there when you plan for it and the path to success is as clear as trying to find your tent in a festival site. With no torch. Pop singer Starling has created a podcast interviewing top industry creatives including Bjork producer Damian Taylor, Former Head of Specialist Factual at C4 David Glover (he created Gogglebox), and many more. The aim? To help people aspiring to make it in the creative industries by learning from the experts: What makes them tick, how they got to the top of one of the world's toughest industries, their mistakes, triumphs, and the moments that made them who they are.

This week Chas E and Mike Mitchell consult their buddy Jack about Session Beers and taste the Session IPA "Pinner Throwback IPA" from Oskar Blues Brewery. And to keep us honest, we also try a standard IPA - the "Trickster IPA" from Black Raven Brewing. We keep the session theme rolling with the Top 6 Session Musicians and a look at some famous Session Backup Vocalists. Also, we have some more original music from the hysterical Steve Goodie and our own Mike Mitchell, and a crazy Clint Eastwood rant.
