Zig At The Gig with Bob Lord Bob Lord is a producer, composer, and bassist based in Portsmouth NH USA. In 2015 Bob was named one of Musical America's “30 Professionals of the Year: Key Influencers,” and as CEO of PARMA Recordings his work has been nominated for three GRAMMY Awards in 2019 and 2020. PLAYLAND ARCADE, Lord's debut solo album out on April 27, 2021, is a convergence point of the disparate elements from what clearly is a remarkably diverse career. Hard-charging prog-rock blowouts, atmospheric orchestral potboilers, gauzy jazz improvisations, retro instrumental pop, straight up foley – this is a producer's album through and through, and it reflects Lord's own artistic experiences in a kaleidoscopic fashion. The musicianship is as accomplished as it is audacious. Highlighted by Lord's molten, overdriven 8-string bass, the album features drummer Jamie Perkins (from the Billboard chart-topping group The Pretty Reckless) and keyboardist Duncan Watt (composer for “League of Legends”) with cameos by Ed Jurdi (Band of Heathens, Trigger Hippy), Andy Happel (Thanks To Gravity), and the Moravian Philharmonic Orchestra, with percussion recorded in Havana, Cuba. Lord's resume is a particularly unusual one bolstered by some truly singular credits: with Pete Townshend of The Who, Bob co-produced the double album METHOD MUSIC by Lawrence Ball, released in 2012 on Navona Records and hailed by Pitchfork for its “wondrous, rippling, and startlingly tactile music.” He is also the music producer of WILD SYMPHONY, an orchestral suite composed by the #1 NY Times bestselling author Dan Brown (“The Da Vinci Code”) which accompanies the illustrated children's book of the same title released in 2020. The book is published in more than 40 countries worldwide. In 1996 Bob co-founded the award-winning group Dreadnaught, described by Relix Magazine as “the country's best 'pure' prog-rock combo.” The band has performed with artists such as John Entwistle (The Who), Tony Levin (Peter Gabriel, King Crimson), and NRBQ, and their 25th anniversary album NORTHERN BURNER is set to drop in Summer 2021. Steve Gorman is a founding member of the iconic American rock n roll band The Black Crowes. Over 27 years, he toured the world relentlessly, leaving a small piece of his sanity at every stop. Gorman launched a sports talk radio show in Nashville, 'Steve Gorman SPORTS!' in 2011, working with Troy Hanson at 102.5 The Game. The show was syndicated on Fox Sports Radio from 2014-2018. PART ONEScott and Paul dive deep on Rolling Stone's controversial revision of its "500 Greatest Albums of All Time" list and discuss how valuation of music changes with the progression of each decade.PART TWOOur in-depth career spanning conversation with Will HogeABOUT WILL HOGEAs a songwriter Will Hoge is perhaps best known for “Even if it Breaks Your Heart,” a #1 country hit for Eli Young Band that earned a Grammy nomination for Best Country Song as well as both CMA and ACM nominations for Song of the Year. Originally recorded on Hoge’s own album The Wreckage, it is one of many acclaimed compositions from the pen of the outspoken singer-songwriter who celebrates both his southern heritage and progressive social views. In addition to performing “You Make Me Happy,” the theme song to the CBS sitcom Still Standing, Hoge has released more than a dozen albums. Though his music ranges from rock to folk to Americana, his single “Strong” earned mainstream country radio airplay and was featured in a national Chevy truck commercial. He has collaborated with writers such as Brett Beavers, Tommy Lee James, Hillary Lindsay, Gordie Sampson, Chris Stapleton, Hayes Carrl, Brendan Benson, and Wade Bowen. Other artists who’ve recorded his songs include the group Trigger Hippy and Lady A, formerly known as Lady Antebellum. American Songwriter Podcast Network
It’s been six years since Joan Osborne put out a record of original material, but her new 10 song record Trouble and Strife absolutely makes up for the wait. Don’t get me wrong, I absolutely loved the Bob Dylan covers record, and all the live playing she did to go along with it, plus her contributions to the first version of Trigger Hippy, but I think we can all agree that Joan has always had a very strong voice for socio-political advocacy in her writing and it’s something that’s been missing from the landscape. By the way, I’ve known since we started this podcast back in 2016 that Joan Osborne was absolutely one of the people we wanted to have on the show, because of her diverse and eclectic background, and because she was such an integral part of the new Jam Band scene in New York in the late 80s and early 90s. Basically I’m an unabashed fan of this woman’s voice, her body of work, and her overall talent. So it was an absolute delight to sit down with her to talk about the new album, and much more, including some of the things mentioned in this intro. Our conversation started though, when I asked what took so long for new Joan Osborne material. Last Friday, Trigger Hippy released their sophomore record Full Circle and Then Some. This is a band that has sort been on quasi hiatus at least from the public for quite some time, and that record, five years in the making brings them back into the spotlight. The band, comprised of bassist Nick Govrick and Steve Gorman, now includes Ed Jurdi and Amber Woodhouse. They’ve had several other members in the band over the years including Audley Freed, Jackie Greene and Joan Osborne. Their music blends stuff we love like rock, soul, Americana and more, so we were delighted to hear they had a new record. It's another two for one today on Talkin' Rock. First, it's drummer, Steve Gorman. He's got a lot going on with his band Trigger Hippy and his book "Hard To Handle: The Life And Death Of The Black Crowes". He's very candid when it comes to talking about the Crowes. He talks about the troubles in the band and how it ended. He discusses a lot about how the brothers Robinson, and it's very interesting. He even hints that there could be a BC reunion, which he wouldn't be involved in. Steve is one of these guys that I could've talked to for another hour. Very well-spoken and candid. Guitar virtuoso, Ron "Bumblefoot" Thal, is up next. As he says, he's a human jukebox. He can play anything on the guitar. He tells me about a two-piece band from Israel that he's working with. Guitarists that influenced him along with a killer Ace Frehley story. He goes through his tour itinerary, Sons Of Apollo's new album, hot sauce and everything in between. Lots of talk about his tour this past summer with ASIA as well. If you like this podcast, 5 star ratings and reviews and always welcomed! 248-586-2988 to leave a VM feedback. Joining Brando as special co-host for episode 49 is Sir Kev from Ireland. Kev shared his GNR story on Ep. 27 as our first “fan obsession” interview. Kev and Brando first discuss the chat with Alan Niven from the last episode, which has since gone viral with the news of Izzy Stradlin showing up at a GNR sound check during the Not In This Lifetime tour. After “Shotgun News,” the boys are joined by legendary drummer, Steve Gorman. Most famously from the Black Crowes, now currently with Trigger Hippy and a radio host for Fox Sports. Steve takes us through his journey into radio and how the Black Crowes came to be. Most interesting for GNR fans, we learn about Steve’s time with Slash, and how their “band” would go on to be Velvet Revolver. Steve also gets candid on his thoughts on a possible Crowes reunion, feelings on GNR, and his upcoming book! All this and so much more! Please follow/subscribe/leave a review!
ANDREA ZONN is one of the most respected fiddle players and harmony vocalists in contemporary music today. Her years on the road as a fiddler and harmony singer for James Taylor, Vince Gill, Trace Adkins and others have drawn her close to some important artists. Zonns wide-ranging tastes and twin training in classical and traditional music helped her find extensive studio work, including recordings with Linda Ronstadt, George Jones, Amy Grant and countless others. On 'Rise', Zonns second album as an artist on Compass Records, shows off Andrea digging into songcraft with focus and newfound confidence. It includes appearances by some of her friends and colleagues. like Taylor, Gill, Keb' Mo', Sam Bush, John Cowan and others. JACKIE GREENE has an uncanny knack for synthesizing his deep affinity for American roots styles into timeless, personally-charged music. Armed with a persuasive voice, a vivid songwriting skill and an instinctive mastery of several instruments, Greene has carved out a unique musical niche, and the new album marks another creative landmark in his already compelling body of work. Although Back to Birth is Greenes first new solo release in five years, hes hardly been idle. In fact, hes spent much of the past few years engaging in a series of collaborative musical adventures including touring with the Black Crowes, Phil Lesh & Friends and the Grateful Deads Bob Weir plus the release of the self-titled debut album of supergroup Trigger Hippy featuring and Greene and Joan Osborne.
