Released slap-bang in the throes of Nu-Metal's commercial peak, Come Clean by Puddle of Mudd lends slightly from the genre but heaps in elements of Grunge, Post-Grunge & dare say ‘Butt-Rock' to the overall theme. Wes Scantlin and his band of merry men offer up a plate of digestible rock that was lapped up by fans at the time & had hits to boot. ‘She Hates Me' & ‘Blurry' were major successes both sides of the Atlantic but are pretty different to everything else on this album. How does this bad boy stack up? And is it any good? We take it in track-by-track as well as giving a somewhat belated appraisal of this year's Download Festival. Multi-Platinum rock band Puddle of Mudd drops their new album Ubiquitous via Pavement Entertainment. The release is the band's seventh studio album, which features eleven new songs that have the signature, hard-hitting sound that Puddle of Mudd is known for, as well as a fresh take on their unique style. Ubiquitous is the subsequent album to 2019's Welcome to Galvania, which featured the Billboard chart-topping hit “Uh Oh.”To celebrate the new album, Puddle of Mudd debuts the first single from Ubiquitous, which is entitled “Cash & Cobain.” Lead singer Wes Scantlin says, “I totally dig the song ‘Cash & Cobain.' The song covers a lot of different genres, which I think is pretty cool. It was a collaboration with Colin Brittain. I'm still flabbergasted by how we managed to blend all these musical styles into a single track. It's like we took all these genres, mixed and matched until they meshed perfectly.” Scantlin has been the driving force behind the band's success since its inception. With his distinctive vocals and songwriting style, Scantlin has helped to define Puddle of Mudd's sound and create some of the most memorable rock hits of the past two decades.
Always a blast to talk with my friends, Brad Stewart and Bobby Amaru from Saliva. If you're in the SE Michigan area, swing by District 142 on Monday, September 25th to see the show. Their new record dropped a couple weeks back called Revelations. It was an album written and recorded before the passing of original guitarist, Wayne Swinny. Bobby said they put the album out to honor Wayne. They even redid some of the artwork to pay tribute to the late ax slinger. They talked about the backdrop they're playing in front of each night. "Everybody knows, when you see it, that Raiders logo." Their was a lot of Wayne talk. That dude was so nice. "No ego, one of a kind" is how Brad described him. As Booby recalled "He was always honest, a great person." Bobby said he hasn't watched their latest video for "Come Back Stronger" that they recorded just days before Wayne's death. You can see the video below. We talked a lot about the writing and recording process for the album. We always talked about the split in the band with Saliva, and original singers Josey Scott's Saliva. "It's an interesting situation that we're to be quit honest." "It's an awesome thing!" Bobby added about Josey also being out on tour singing these songs. They went on to talk more on this topic. There was the usual talk of football. These guys love their NFL. If you follow Bobby on Instagram with his daughter. If you haven't seen it, him and his daughter cover some of the biggest songs in rock. He told me how it started, about some bands that have asked them to cover their songs and more. Some people may or may not know, but Brad was a writing partner with Wes Scantlin from Puddle Of Mudd before joining Shinedown. He told the story of writing "Control" and how he met Brent Smith and became a member of Shinedown. LOVE talking to my buds from Saliva....can't wait to see them Monday at District 142.

Steve and Remfry take a trip down memory lane this week and review an album that one of our hosts has already reviewed at the time of its release in the form of post-grunge no marks Puddle of Mudd's covers album, the confusingly titled, Re:(disc)overed, released on the 29th of August 2011. It's an album that could very much have flown under the radar for many people, what with Puddle of Mudd having suffered a serious drop in fortunes and commercial appeal after the mainstream dalliance they had with their 2001 album Come Clean. That record sold over 5 million copies worldwide, but a decade later the band were on something of a downward trajectory, so what better way to pump life into their career than to record a set of their versions of some of the most famous songs in the history of popular music. A good idea on paper, but quite how a band as rudimentary and lacking in quality as Puddle of Mudd thought that they were going to be capable of doing justice to classic songs by The Rolling Stones, The Beatles, Neil Young, Led Zeppelin and Elton John's ROCKET MAN is a confusing one. Still, they did it, and back on an early incarnation of the Metal Hammer podcast, Steve was given the record to review on a particularly stressful week, resulting in the album, the band, their fans and, more than anyone, frontman Wes Scantlin getting a verbal kicking of the highest order. Ten years on and it's fair to say that Scantlin hasn't had the best of decades, being arrested for everything from tax evasion, to drink driving, to riding airport luggage carousels to strapping bombs to his own cars, he even ruined About A Girl by Nirvana. The silly bastard. But, we have to ask, did he really deserve to be thrown at a wall as a baby…?

We've finally arrived at a pivotal moment in the show's history: an album both hosts absolutely despise. After Bryan rigged the show poll to get a convincing win for Puddle of Mudd after Kittie was hours away from victory, he reaps what he sows as he ends up misremembering the album as good and discovers that in the year of our lord 2020, the band Puddle of Mudd is very, very bad. In a continuing series where Bryan Quinby (Street Fight Radio) and John Cullen (Blocked Party) review one classic nu-metal album per month, the target this month is fairly big, as Come Clean is baffling from many angles: the lyrics, the songwriting, what genre it really belongs to, what era it was recorded in, and just how someone like Wes Scantlin managed to front a successful band. The fellas look at how this album managed to get popular despite all of these shortcomings, including Wes' own hometown of Kansas City essentially disowning him, him publicly insulting Fred Durst despite Fred being the one to break them, and a lead single where the song trails out with Wes Scantlin singing how he loves the way his girl smacks his ass. Plus, this month's Challenge gets personal as Bryan and John rewrite "She Hates Me" to include verses about their significant others. If you want to be loved in the same way as our significant others, you can donate to the show at https://patreon.com/thepodkast, where $4/month gets you access to a shiny new bonus bauble every month! We've done four bonus episodes so far with some fantastic guests like Nick Wiger of Doughboys, Molly Lambert of Nightcall, and Keith Buckley of Every Time I Die, and this month, we have Felix Biederman from Chapo Trap House joining us to discuss Everlast's Whitey Ford Sings the Blues. It's gonna be a good one, folks. Hop on board!
