Without a doubt, Greg Hager's western music is getting noticed. In 2019, MFG Records in Nashville signed him. His rural western roots run deep and are wellspring for his lyrics. Hager writes and composes everything that he sings, and his style is heavily influenced by other great 12-string guitar pickers and storytellers like John Denver, Roger Whittaker, Gordon Lightfoot, Paul Overstreet, Clint Black, and George Strait. Now with over ten albums to his name, he performs around the country, as well as overseas. Greg joins Alan and Russell to talk about what it's like to be a career musician.

You might recognise Don Spencer from his three decades on Play School. That's how most Australians know him. But there's so much more to Don than bears and chairs. He is, as we discovered, one of those people with “stories to tell”. He's toured with the Rolling Stones, flirted with Marianne Faithfull, played hockey with the national Kenyan team, learnt guitar from Roger Whittaker, and had Russell Crowe as a son-in-law. But it's Don's work behind the scenes that will ultimately ensure his legacy. For more than 20 years, Don's been providing free music lessons to Australia's most disadvantaged kids - through the Australian Children's Music Foundation, which he founded – and Future Generation Australia supports. So far, the organisation has delivered almost 270,000 free music lessons.

Spray anyone? 2023 sees Spray ring in the new year by bringing their Songs Already Sung project – a collection of carefully curated cover songs – to streaming services. Spray is comprised of Ricardo Autobahn (synthesizers) and Jenny McLaren (vocals, guitars), both formerly (and once again) of the Cuban Boys, who took their chaotic technopunk to number 1 on the Festive 50 (twice), recorded one of the best Peel Sessions ever and went head-to-head with Sir Cliff Richard in a Christmas Chart Battle. For the duo, Songs Already Sung was something of a experiment and a departure from their standard way of working. Says Ricardo in his own inimitable style, “Songs Already Sung was an ongoing project throughout 2022, which built into a whole album month by month of popular beat group Spray performing some great hits of yesteryear.” Though there's only 12 months in the year, in a very Spray move Songs Already Sung actually comprises 14 tracks. That number is a tribute to both the band's expansive musical taste, unique approach to the project, and the sheer number of fantastic fan-generated ideas the band received after a callout on social media. As Ricardo stated at the commencement of what was then called the Untitled Covers Project, “We have a number of cover versions to keep our live set interesting, but as for our albums, they've been strictly originals only. So, we felt it might be fun, and also a good way of keeping ourselves proactive, to record a covers album, recording and releasing the songs one a month. This allows for an element of interactivity, fan suggestions, and also the possibility we'll end up with more songs than we expected. Or possibly less.” He added, “These won't be necessarily what you'd expect from us either. The idea of Spray cover versions is to take something as far away from our oeuvre as we can find and then drag it kicking and screaming into the Spray Universe.” The fourteen tracks on Song Already Sung include classics from The (Detroit) Spinners, Living Color, KISS, Nine Inch Nails, and Tori Amos. Also featured and given the Spray treatment are songs by Roger Whittaker – a rare vocal outing from Ricardo – Hazel O'Connor, Faith No More, Chas and Dave, Glenn Hoddle and Chris Waddle, The Connells, Lil Nas X, and Blink 182. Last but not least, fans of 70s British educational TV will be intrigued by the inclusion of Paddy Kingsland's The Boy from Space, given a suitable cosmic-sounding and rather cheeky Spray makeover. The collection of tracks on Song Already Sung is sure to bring a smile to your face, and maybe the odd tear of joy to an eye or two. Music Available on AnalogueTrash

Guitarist, songwriter and producer MIKE CAMPBELL has been playing with Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers for years. But over the last 20 years, he has also fronted his own band, The Dirty Knobs. I spoke to him on the eve of the release of the band's second album. Remember the song "It's Raining Men?" How could you forget that cult-pop classic! We catch up with 'The Weather Girls' MARTHA WASH whose music tells the story of dance and pop music from the days of disco right up to the present. It's a great yarn. Listener asked to hear from legendary 70's and 80's Aussie singer songwriter, KEVIN JOHNSON. Not only huge in Australia, Kevin tells us how his songs were covered by a host of artists including Tom Jones, Mac Davis and Roger Whittaker. And the Europeans couldn't get enough of him. He's a wonderful chat and don't forget, if you'd like to request a guest, just send me a message sandy@abreathoffreshair.com.au Jon me won't you?

This is a popular song first recorded by Kamahl in 1982 for a country and western album he was recording. It wasn't commercially released because it was felt he did not suit the country and western style. So eventually it was also recorded by others, including Roger Whittaker, Sheena Easton and Lee Greenwood. It is a popular request at Mayo Clinic. I hope you enjoy it.

Since over the years so many Elvis fans have often pinned business decisions on his estate when there are many other stakeholders, the suggestion was to do an explainer of who owns what in the Elvis world, from his personal effects to his music publishing interests, from his movies to his mansion, it's all covered in this episode and as far as we know is accurate to the date of this release. There may be some slight historical inaccuracies due to some context or changeovers being left out, the emphasis was on getting it pared down to a simple list of who owns what *today*, and information was largely derived from swaths of press releases online from key stakeholders, so we apologize if there any omissions. Then, for Song of the Week, Gurdip surprises everyone by picking "The Lady Loves Me," the main duet between Elvis & Ann-Margret from 1964's "Viva Las Vegas." Meanwhile, Justin bids "The Last Farewell," highlighting Elvis' 1976 cover of the Roger Whittaker ballad. If you enjoy TCBCast, please consider supporting us with a donation at Patreon.com/TCBCast. Chefvisite!

It's beginning to look a lot like Dragon Tuesday. And to celebrate, we listen to two draconic Christmas songs! First is "Darcy the Dragon" by Roger Whittaker, which leaves some questions unanswered regarding both Darcy himself and the events of his Christmas errands. Then "Fly On Christmas Dragon" by Robby Grant splits open our brains - not because its lyrics pose any deep or complex quandaries, but for reasons we can't quite put our fingers on. The ranking music this week is the Peace Keepers homeworld theme from Spyro the Dragon.

Behrouz and Aziz at Hauwei Island — (Photo: Michael Green) 'I'm excited because … for almost three years I haven't left the centre, and I was just locked inside there … Now, I'm walking on the streets – every two steps I take, I turn and I look behind me, like, "Where is the security guard?"' Abdul Aziz Muhamat It's July 2016. On the morning Michael flies to Manus Island, Aziz leaves the detention centre for the first time in nearly three years. In this episode, Aziz and Michael finally meet in person. Michael also meets some people from Manus Island, who explain how they feel about having the detention centre on their island. Together with Behrouz Boochani, a Kurdish journalist and detainee, Aziz and Michael take a boat to a nearby island to swim, eat together, and escape the shadow of the detention centre. For Aziz, it's an exhilarating time, full of new experiences and unexpected joys – but he knows it will soon come to an end. More Than a Song - Discovering the Truth of Scripture Hidden in Today's Popular Christian Music
If we want God's praise to "ever be" on our lips, then we need to develop patterns to help make it happen. This week's song, "Ever Be" by Aaron Shust led me to Psalm 22 where I uncovered a powerful pattern for prayer. The Psalm itself details how we can be fooled into defining the character of God through the lens of our circumstances. Don't make the mistake of thinking the theme of your praise is derived from your circumstances. The theme of your praise should be derived from God alone. On this episode I discuss: Using the power of Christian music to rehearse the greatness of God **Random note: I don't really discuss this on the episode, but I use the phrase, "Woe is me and oh lament" several times and it comes from a Christmas song by Roger Whittaker about Darcy the Dragon. For those of you who care...here's a link the song! YouTube Audio Link** The Psalms contain many songs in the Bible Using the free memory verse resources I create each week to hide God's Word in your heart - sign up here The verse that led us to Psalm 22 today - Psalm 22:25 Lysa Teurkeurst's story about her Liberian son - read more about Lysa here How our feelings cannot accurately describe the character of God...He IS Who He IS The B.I.T.E - Bible Interaction Tool Exercise - for the week is using a Psalm as a pattern for prayer - use this tool to follow the pattern for yourself Jesus' fulfillment of many aspects of this Psalm in Matthew 27 Additional Resources Lyrics A devotional by Aaron Shust - "Ever Be" - Read the devotion here This Week's Challenge Read Psalm 22 for yourself! Use the Psalm as a pattern for prayer this week and download this week's resource to walk you through it and write out your prayer to God. Then go read Matthew 27 and discover the fulfillment of many elements of this prophetic Psalm in the death of Jesus on the cross. Ponder, consider, meditate, write and pray. And may His praise "ever be" on your lips this week, but more than that, may HE be the THEME of your praise from now on.
There are a few artists that really push the boundaries of their art, raise the bar, and take us to new places! Liona Boyd is one of those people! Truly the "First Lady Of Guitar" she has been one of the "A" list classical guitar artists for many years (having studied with Andres Segovia, Eli Kassner, Narciso Yepes, Alirio Diaz and Julian Bream) but she has gone much further. Starting with her breakthrough album "Persona" and continuing even today, Liona has gone beyond the traditional classical guitar repertoire and has explored a mixture of Rock, New Age and classical with such noted artists as Yo-Yo Ma, Eric Clapton, David Gilmour, Chet Atkins, Al DiMeola, Steve Morse, and Roger Whittaker, taking her guitar playing into a multitude of directions. Today, she keeps going further, now also singing and songwriting, giving us a wealth of new repertoire for the guitar! We talk to Liona about her guitar playing, her beautiful tone, the guitars in her life and take a look at some of her music! We also will be talking to her producer, Peter Bond, about recording Liona and explore the creative process between these two brilliant artists!
