** PLEASE SUBSCRIBE ** Featured in WYGYFF Episode 6: Multi-instrumentalist, bandleader and producer Bobby Easton. Steeped in funk (especially P-Funk) and global music, among other styles, artists he has worked with include Sergio Mendes, Janelle Monae, Van Halen, Beck, George Clinton and many members of Parliament-Funkadelic, Ozomatli, the Big Ol' Nasty Getdown, members of the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Trulio Disgracias, Dennis Coffey, Kid Creole and the Coconuts, Fred Wesley, Onyi, Moforro, capoeira music albums, and many more. In 2009, he founded the Long Beach Funk Fest, and for 25 years has served as a music educator. RECORDED SEPTEMBER 2024 Hosted by Scott "DR GX" Goldfine — musicologist, author of “Everything Is on the One: The First Guide of Funk” and creator/host of the popular TRUTH IN RHYTHM podcast — "Where'd You Get Your Funk From?" is the latest interview show brought to you by FUNKNSTUFF.NET. Where'd You Get Your Funk From (WYGYFF) is an open format video and audio podcast focusing on the here and now, with a broad range of creative and artistic guests sharing fascinating stories, experiences, and perspectives. WYGYFF is a welcoming avenue to newer and independent musical acts as well as established and still active musicians of any genre; authors; filmmakers; actors; artists; collectors and archivists; radio & podcast personalities; journalists; scholars; sound techs; promoters; photographers; and other creative people. A common thread, is the show's standard opening question: Where'd you get your funk from? This is much deeper than it may seem as the answer need not be strictly about funky music, as not everyone has found the funk. It could hit on whatever type of music touches their soul or pleasure centers. Additionally, the question extends beyond music. Paraphrasing George Clinton, funk is whatever it needs to be to get you over the hump. Thus, guests can explain where they got their grit, perseverance, inspiration, talent, creativity, character or other qualities that shaped them into who they are today. This serves as a springboard into candid, in-depth and engrossing conversations. LEGAL NOTICE: All video and audio content protected by copyright. Featured in TRUTH IN RHYTHM Episode 342: Charles Clark, an original member of the 1970s soul vocal act, The Floaters! The Detroit-based quintet had one of the biggest worldwide hits of the late 1970s with the dreamy, seductive and super fun “Float On” – all nearly 12 minutes of it! The group released four albums in all, had another hit with “You Don't Have to Say You Love Me,” and performed extensively. Last year, Charles Clark revived The Floaters with three new members, and has released a classic-sounding remake called, “I'm So Glad I Took My Time.” Others he's worked with through the years include C.J. & Co., Dennis Coffey and Heavy D. & The Boyz. For someone who professes not to be special on her new album, “I Am What I'm Waiting For,” Kendra Morris is … pretty special. Morris is a Greenpoint-based soul singer-songwriter and visual artist who has been recording and gigging steadily — at her own pace and on her own terms — since her 2010 self-titled debut. The lead single off her new album, produced by Little Shalimar of Run the Jewels, is “What Are You Waiting For,” a propulsive and insistent and sexy workout. “Dominoes,” released as a video last week, comically chronicles the pitfalls of married life. We'll talk about that. We'll discuss collaborating with everyone from Dennis Coffey to Czarface to Ghostface Killah to, uh, Scarlett Johansson. And we talk about forging her own path in the music industry, her process and her visual art. For it's fifth studio album, Jethro Tull decided to satirize the concept album which was popular amongst prog rock acts like themselves, Yes, and Emerson, Lake & Palmer. Thick as a Brick is a single piece of music spread across two album sides, and takes inspiration from Monty Python, poking fun at the critics, the audience, and the band itself. Ian Anderson wrote much of the album, but the entire band contributed to the songs. The "concept" of this concept album is that the lyrics are written by an 8 year-old genius named Gerald Bostock, and the album is a musical adaptation of Bostock's poem. The cover art continues the spoof, as it forms a 12-page English newspaper with both articles and advertisements that might be found in a small town paper. Contemporary critical reviews of the album were mixed, but retrospective reviews would all be positive. Commercially the album was a success, hitting number 1 in the US, Canada, and Australia, and hitting number 5 in the UK. Brian brings us this prog rock spoof-turned-classic. Thick as a Brick, part 1This is the entire album side 1. Most Jethro Tull fans will recognize the first few minutes as the radio cut of "Thick As a Brick," though most FM stations would truncate it as it drifts into the next movement of the suite. Although it is one continuous piece of music, the movements are actually three- to five-minute songs stitched together to form a continuous whole. ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:The main theme from the motion picture “The Godfather” The ultimate mob movie was released this month, and was an offer we couldn't refuse! STAFF PICKS:A Horse With No Name by AmericaRob's staff pick was America's first and most successful single off their self-titled debut album. The song was originally entitled "Desert Song," and was inspired by prints by Salvador Dali and M.C. Escher. One unusual thing about this song is that it is built on only two chords.Chelsea Girls by SpiritBruce brings us a deep cut in the leading track from Spirit's fifth album called Feedback. This is the only Spirit album to feature John and Al Staehely as band members, and to not feature Randy California as a band member. This album is a little more California country rock than the prog rock/psychedelic rock for which Spirit is better known.30 Days In the Hole by Humble Pie Wayne presents the version of Humble Pie with guitarist Steve Marriott on lead vocals, as Peter Frampton had left the group. This is off their fifth and most successful album, “Smokin.'” This would become Humble Pie's best known song, despite the fact that it did not do well on the charts.Stay With Me by the FacesRod Stewart's voice is hard to miss in Brian's staff pick. This song chronicles the stereotypical one night stand of a band member on the tour. Rod Stewart and Ronnie Wood co-wrote this song, and it is off their album "A Nod Is As Good As A Wink...To A Blind Horse." COMEDY TRACK:Taurus by Dennis CoffeyThis rock instrumental was on the charts in this month.

Right under the wire, here's one more podcast for this blessed and cursed year of 2020. EPISODE #90 of Random Old Records is mostly new jams this time, with a few old favorites sprinkled in here and there. It goes all over the place! If you're into snapping electronic percussion, unexpected sax solos, uninhibited crooning, pronounced accents, and way too many power chords, this is the episode for you!I am a huge fan of the raw and jubilant electronic jams made by Los Angeles label 100% Silk, so this set kicks off with a track from label mainstays LA Vampires. You'll then hear swaggering fire from US Girls and Special Interest, poppy-punk from The Beths, Brick Head, and Dumspell, psychedelic classics from Margo Guryan and The Pretty Things, wistful modern pop from Marie Davidson and En Attendant Ana, plus so much more. It's an open window on a warm winter morning. Don't forget to SUBSCRIBE to Random Old Records via Apple Podcasts or RSS. If you like the show, please rate it and write a review! The time keeper of eternity. Ballads, Blues, Dixieland and The Kansas City Shuffle. There's more to it than that obviously but my guests roots are deep in the blues. He developed his chops in after hours clubs in St. Louis and later on in LA. He became one of the most sot after drummers for Soul and the newly invented word in the American Lexicon. Funk, my guest along with Harvey Mason, Mike Clark, David Garibaldi and a handful of other cats created that word funk because they blended jazz beats with soul and blues. My guest did this with Dennis Coffey, Dyke & The Blazers, The Watts 103rd street rhythm band and countless other artists. He has been an accompanist his whole life. Backing up stars who get all the recognition but wouldn't have the hits without my guest. James Gadson welcome to the JFS..... --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/jake-feinberg/support
Many Westerners are unfamiliar with the history and importance of the diaspora or the disambiguation of African Slaves to the Americans. Some went state side where they were saddled with slavery and abusive treatment. Another cross-section wound up in Cuba and the surrounding Caribbean islands. They created an enclave of traditional dance rhythms based off of the Cleve and what would be dubbed Afro-Cuban Rhythms. My guest today is a product of the Bahamas where he was a professional jockey and drummer during his teenage years. He came to the united states and tried his hand in acting including the James Bond classic Thunderball. It was during this time that he met Julian "Cannonball" Adderley and his musical career took off. He became the in demand studio percussionist for Berry Gordy and Motown, you will also find him playing with Billy Preston, Charles Kynard, Dennis Coffey, the aforementioned mentioned Cannonball, Seals and Crofts and Neil Diamond. He was able to take the conga drum and fit into gypsy folk, rock, symphonic soul, disco and jazz. Even today I am digging through a record bin and I pull out a Bellamy Brothers record and I there's My man King Errisson on percussion. Dennis Coffey is a legendary guitarist from Detroit - a highly coveted session musician for numerous artists and labels, including Motown. As a member of Motown's house band - the "Funk Brothers" - he played on some of its biggest hits by The Temptations, The Supremes, Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye and many others.. And in 1971, he had his own Top 10 instrumental hit – "Scorpio." Dennis talks about how Motown lost its signature sound after moving to L.A. and abandoning the Funk Brothers, how - despite all his success - he had to work on an assembly line at General Motors, and how he achieved success in a new career while still continuing in music.

Already an experienced session player, by the late 1960s funk guitar icon Dennis Coffey became a member of the Funk Brothers studio band.He played on dozens of recordings for Motown Records, and introduced a hard rock guitar sound to Motown record producer Norman Whitfield's recordings, including distortion, Echoplex tape-loop delay, and wah-wah; most notably heard on "Cloud Nine," "Ball of Confusion (That's What the World Is Today)" and "Psychedelic Shack" by The Temptations. He played on numerous other hit records of the era including No. 1 singles like Edwin Starr's "War," Diana Ross & The Supremes' "Someday We'll Be Together" and Freda Payne's No. 3 hit (No. 1 in the U.K.) "Band of Gold."In 1971, Coffey recorded "Scorpio," a million-selling instrumental single that peaked in the U.S. at No. 9 on the Billboard Hot Soul Singles chart and at No. 6 on the Billboard Hot 100. The instrumental track featured former Motown "funk brother" Bob Babbitt on bass. On Jan. 8, 1972, Coffey became the first white artist to perform on TV's Soul Train, playing "Scorpio." That record received a gold disc awarded by the Recording Industry Association of America in December 1971.The follow-up in 1972 was "Taurus," both credited to Coffey and the Detroit Guitar Band. Since then, he has recorded several solo albums, most of them for the Sussex and Westbound labels. While at Sussex Records, Coffey arranged and produced along with Mike Theodore the million-selling "Nice To Be With You" by the group Gallery. In addition, Coffey scored the blaxploitation film, Black Belt Jones (1974).Coffey was interviewed in the 2002 film, Standing in the Shadows of Motown, which told the story of Funk Brothers and explained that he had sold his Fender Stratocaster to buy a Gibson Firebird after he heard Eddie Willis of Funk Brothers play it during a Motown session. In 2004, he published a memoir, Guitars, Bars and Motown Superstars. Coffey was inducted into the Michigan Rock and Roll Legends Hall of Fame as a member of the Funk Brothers in 2010 and as a solo artist in 2018.He recounts most of it here, as well as his still active performing schedule and 2019's jazz album, Down by the River.RECORDED FEBRUARY 2020Get your copy of "Everything Is on the One: The First Guide of Funk" today! https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1541256603/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=1541256603&linkCode=as2&tag=funknstuff-20&linkId=b6c7558ddc7f8fc9fe440c5d9f3c4008

Imagine you could take a pill that reduced or even eliminated your body's need for sleep. Would you take it? What would be the implications for society if everyone took it? Those are some of the issues raised in "Dead Tired"; the debut novel from Derek J. Pack, one of my guests this week. Also, we take a trip over to "Motor City", Detroit. Guitarist Dennis Coffey is here talking about his early work with Del Shannon, his current solo career, and of course, the assembly line hit-making process of Motown. Join me as I talk about the amazing life of Crispin Cioe , Music and so much more! In 1980, Crispin and three other horn players (Arno Hecht, Bob Funk, and Paul Litteral, who was eventually replaced by Larry Etkin) formed the Uptown Horns, starting with a weekly event at Tramps nightclub on E. 15th St., “The Uptown Horns Party”, that ran for two years, and featured many special guest artists as they passed through Gotham (including Solomon Burke, Rufus Thomas, Mitch Ryder, Elvis Costello, Wayne Kramer, Dennis Coffey, David Johansen, Dr. John, Southside Johnny, Clarence Clemmons, Buster Brown, Iggy Pop, and many others). The Uptown Horns emerged from this period with their first significant gigs and sessions as a section, including an acclaimed live album with Solomon Burke , and tours/recording with the ascendant J. Geils Band . The Uptowns went on to tour/record with a wide variety of top-tier artists, including The Rolling Stones , Peter Wolf , James Brown , Joe Cocker, Buster Poindexter , James Montgomery Band , B-52s , Tom Waits , Bronski Beat, Iggy Pop, The Communards, Cameo, Joan Jett , Ohio Players, Albert Collins, Robert Plant & The Honeydrippers, Robert Palmer, and many more.In the late-90s Crispin’s started his band Cracked Ice, which has developed into a multi-platform springboard for various facets of his music and business. Crispin wrote/arranged/produced the band’s debut album “Soul Noir” (which music the band has performed live at festivals and clubs), developed the group into an ace backup unit for live performance (for Al Kooper, James Montgomery, Billy Squier and others), a potent ensemble for live TV (“The Kennedy Center Mark Twain Prize for Humor” for PBS), and (in a parallel universe) one of the premier party bands in America today.
This week, our hosts get way overexcited over news that Michael Jai White's Black Dynamite is coming back for another movie, the prospect of a Duke Nukem flick starring John Cena, a Clue reboot with Ryan Reynolds, the end of Nintendo's Miitomo, Superman's red underwear AND MORE! The song this week is 'Theme from Black Belt Jones' by Dennis Coffey.
Treacherous Three, Dennis Coffey, Shilpa Ray, Joan Shelley, Silver Apples, Perrey & Kingsley, and the mighty Bill Fox are featured on Bob's final show before he goes on tour for a few weeks.
Legendary Motown Guitarist Talks New Archival Jazz Funk ReleaseDennis Coffey is truly one of the unsung heroes of the guitar. In the late Sixties, he became a member of the famed “Funk Brothers” - the backing musicians that played on all the Motown hit singles. His unique style can be heard on “Ball of Confusion” by the Temptations, “War” by Edwin Starr, and “Someday We’ll Be Together" by the Supremes, just to name a few. He also had a solo career, scoring the million-selling instrumental “Scorpio” in 1971.Resonance Records, usually known for their excellent jazz releases, has just issued “Hot Coffey in the D: Burnin’ at Morey Baker’s Showplace Lounge,” a previously-unheard live album from 1968, featuring Coffey, plus Lyman Woodard on organ and Melvin Davis on drums. We talk why it took so long for this fantastic recording to see a proper release. Plus, he tells us how he first got involved with Motown Records, and how he helped discover the enigmatic singer, Rodriguez.
BANG! @southernvangard #radio presents the Sam Beaubien of Will Sessions interview session! Will Sessions burst onto the international hip-hop scene on 2011 with the release of Elzhi’s “Elmatic” - a jaw dropping tribute and remake to Nas’ “Illmatic”. Friend of Southern Vangard Radio, Peter Agoston, connected us with the founder and leader of the band as they prepare to embark on a summer tour, which includes a show in NY and their first show London as they headline the Hook & Sling festival. We get into a little history as Sam breaks down the band’s beginnings at Wayne State University, early hip-hop production for the Athletic Mic League’s Buff1 (aka Jamall Bufford of The Black Opera) and playing on Mayer Hawthorne’s debut album. We couldn’t help but get on our record nerd ish, so we also talked with Sam about their early 45 releases on FNR and conversations about hip-hop with the Detroit funk legend Dennis Coffey. Did we mention they also just released a new beer - “Deluxe Ale” - with Black Lotus Brewing in support of their latest album, “Deluxe”? There are lots more goodies folks, but we can’t give everything away here - so put this interview in your podcast queue, go cop “Deluxe” today and remember it’s ALWAYS that #smithsonian #grade #twiceaweek // southernvangard.com // @southernvangard on #itunes #podcast #stitcherradio #soundcloud #mixcloud // #hiphop #rap #undergroundhiphop #DJ #mix #interview #podcasts #ATL #DETROIT #WORLDWIDE Recorded live June 11, 2017 @ Dirty Blanket Studios, Marietta, GA southernvangard.com @southernvangard on #itunes #podcast #stitcherradio #soundcloud #mixcloud twitter/IG: @jondoeatl @southernvangard @cappuccinomeeks

Let's cut to the chase for once... This month’s Finders Keepers Radio Show features GEORGE CLINTON and DENNIS COFFEY in person!!!! If you feel the need to read any further, on our fifth edition we ask Dr. Funkenstein himself about his favourite horror films and quiz him on the first Afro-American occult LP! Then we get "the white Jimi Hendrix" to tell us about the more obscure Sussex artists like Paul Parrish and Priscilla Coolidge while discussing his cassette only rap collection and dropping some heavyweight Coffey-breaks in between. Add a sprinkle of overused sound-effects, some O-Level amateur dramatics, tenuous micro-genres and a world record Rotary Connection namedrop count your faithful presenters Andy Votel, Pete Mitchell and Doug Shipton put a lively cast of characters in a big purple box and tie a paisley bow around it with a card that reads PSYCHEDELIC SOUL. These days the indulgent funk records that many of the Finders Keepers crew bought as teenagers are collectively worthy of their own record shop divider and with the help of childhood buddies like Mark "Boney Votel" Rathbone (and Preston soul fiend Stan), cosmic PSSW Jane Weaver, Invisible Spy Benjamin and 808 statesman Graham Massey we lay down a fine blend of obscure, obsessive, obsolete, oblivious and plain obvious spooked-out soul jams and fuzzy funk from around the globe (but mostly from the wild west). So gather round the bearskin rug for all this and much much less without a protective inner sleeve or a bottle of isopropylene in sight. The funky worm has turned... on!

Back to Class is a fitting title for drummer and percussionist Drew Schultz's debut CD, as he looks more like a college professor than a writer and producer of classic-styled Soul songs. But he proves the old maxim that one should definitely not judge a book by its cover. Benefiting the band programs of the Detroit Public School system, Back toClass came to fruition after Schultz, who studied at The Berklee College of Music in Boston and Jazz at New York University, spent a year honing his song writing skills before moving to Detroit to tour with the legendary Four Tops. Originally intending to record his own compositions, Schultz opted instead to write for the very artists with whom he was working. Back to Class is very much a tribute to the sound of Motown, overflowing with delightful melodies and clean-cut funk numbers. Schultz not only composed and produced the majority of the songs, with additional horn arrangements by renowned keyboardist McKinley Jackson, but also drafted in an abundance of musical legends to helm is debut effort. The roster of participants includes Northern Soul favourite Pat Lewis, former Funk Brothers member Dennis Coffey, and Ken Knox of Chairmen of The Board, who adds his vocal magic to the Invictus sounding, “So Many Fish in the Sea.”
