Send us a textGuess What? It's officially grey! We are in it. Oh my! It's Fifty shades of May over here on the Besties and the Books podcast. Welcome back to our spring mini episode series all about the extremely popular yet widely discredited book series: Fifty Shades of Grey by E.L. James. We're officially into book two and things are not exactly going as planned…If you've been following along and watched our “Dark Romance Enters the Chat” episode then you know, we trace romance novels wayyy back to their origin so we can discuss what societal conditions helped to produce this canon of works mostly written by women, for women, with women's stories, pleasure, and lived experiences at the center. We examine what influence romance books have had on literature and the publishing world as a whole, and then specifically discuss what impact Fifty Shades had on the genre! It just happens to be a BIG bonus that Ashley and Liz have never read it before. So this is all new information to us.We think that whether you find these books problematic or not, credit must be given where credit is due. The fact that these books have been stigmatized, criticized, and repeatedly knocked down is indicative (we think) of a larger societal problem: misogyny. Because as a society, it seems we just can't stand it when women are successful… or when they enjoy something. Whether it's objectively “good” or “profitable” or not. Episode 2 covers book 2: Fifty Shades Darker by E. L. James. The first five-ish minutes are spoiler free with our one sentence rapid star and spice ratings. Then we jam pack this mini episode with an entire plot summary in five sentences (with a special classical surprise!), discuss what our faves and fail characters and plot points are, our feelings, notable quotes, red flags, problematic elements, and end with a fun piece of Fifty Shades trivia.Don't be shy, subscribe! Dude, I swear every time I go to the Gold Coast I come back way darker! I legit remember it happened the first time I ever went there in 2013, there's a picture of me somewhere at the end of that trip in a nightclub or something, and I'm super dark. I remember being really proud of it at the time, I thought I looked so cool. And you know what? I was right. I did.

Startdatum: 9. The director of Glengarry Glen Ross and 50 Shades Darker/50 Shades Freed brings us an episode of Twin Peaks. We may have to clone some pine weasels. Originally uploaded: March 14, 2021
The boys are once again getting uber sensual, this time with the extremely sexy sequel, 50 Shades Darker. Fly a failing helicopter and take off your underpants, because things are about to get steamy in this one. Jokes include: The return of the Inspector, mixed viewing results, some extras auditioning on set, too much money a minute, and even more 25 Shades of Grey.

This week's episode is brought to you by 3G: Girls, Golf and General Hospital! This week Evan and Mallory take a look back at the 10,000th episode of General Hospital (wild soap opera storylines!), Tiger Woods winning his 3rd Masters (fantasy golf menus!), the release of 50 Shades Darker (the world of fan fiction!), and the debut of Girls (smash hit or crushing flop?)! It's another can't miss episode!
After 50 Shades Darker there's only one way to go right? Well prepare to be surprised, cause this week's focus takes what Christian Grey does and calls it art. Morbius is Sony's first big superhero film of this year, and following No Way Home all they have to do is stick the landing. Sadly, no one told this movie that if it gets two additional years to release it may want to use them to improve the film. Enough ranting in the description, Danan does plenty of that in this week's episode!

As we learned, this franchise is not really a story as much as a continuous series of fantasy scenes. Good thing we have Sarah and Bridgett to walk us through it. At one point, Bridgett slams her leg on their table and like a classic dom, Sarah takes over the podcast. I'm just keeping track of how their status changes through these episodes. This week we watch the terrible sequel, 50 Shades Darker, featuring more cringey lines, but at least we got some cringey drama to distract from their cringey relationship. We discuss obvious villains, sexy cooking, and who Boyce Fox is. Does he have a Twilight counterpart? Is he based on a real person? WHY DOES ANNA MENTION HIM A MINIMUM OF 10 TIMES AND WHY DO WE NOT EVER SEE HIM? Rate and subscribe or we’ll make you watch this movie, Clockwork Orange Style. Stats/info: 2017, directed by James Foley, starring Dakota Johnson, Jamie Dornan, Eric Johnson, Eloise Mumford, Bella Heathcote, Rita Ora, Luke Grimes, Victor Rasuk, Kim Basinger, and Marcia Gay Harden (Intro music from https://www.free-stock-music.com)
We return with the...thing that follows the other thing. It's a movie based off of a book, which was based off of a fanfiction; it's almost two hours long and absolutely nothing happens. Masquerade? It's a failed attempt. Danger? Nope. There's so much that happens, that it feels unimportant and...it just isn't good at all. It's not even so bad it's funny at this point. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app
