Welcome to The B-Side! Here we talk about movie stars! Not the movies that made them famous or kept them famous, but the ones that they made in between.  Today we discuss Clint Eastwood, the director and the movie star. Our B-Sides are Breezy, White Hunter Black Heart, Blood Work, Flags of Our Fathers, and The Mule. Our guest is the impeccable Mitchell Beaupre, Managing Editor at Letterboxd.  We talk about Clint's Casper cameo and how that was probably the first thing all three of us saw him in a movie, John Wayne's disdain for Eastwood's on-screen persona, his uncanny direction of actors as well as his smart casting (ahem, The 15:17 to Paris notwithstanding) of actors. Often, if Clint is in one of his own movies, he will surround himself with talent as good (if not better) than himself. There's significant appreciation for his underseen Honkytonk Man, there's honest discussion of his ambitious performance in White Hunter Black Heart (playing a version of filmmaker John Huston), and we three reappraise his Flags of Our Fathers nearly twenty years after its underwhelming release. It's way better than you remember! Additional topics include Spielberg's protégés (from Phil Joanou to Kevin Reynolds to Brad Silberling), Breezy's beautiful rendering of the post-60s counterculture depression, and Blood Work's silly (and wonderful) twist ending.

Vineyard Folk by Tamara Weiss & Amanda Benchley The true soul of Martha's Vineyard, captured through the eyes of the talented artists and artisans who live there.     Vineyard Folk leads us on an intimate journey into the lives and inspirational places of some of the many talented artists who have always made up the larger community of Martha's Vineyard. The island, located just seven miles off the coast of Cape Cod, has a long history as geographic muse: Lillian Hellman and William Styron wrote overlooking the Vineyard Haven harbor, and Thomas Hart Benton—whose influence is still felt in island painters today—depicted the stone walls and winding roads of what is known as “up-island” more than a hundred years ago.  Now, a new generation continues to build on these creative legacies, inspired by the island's ever-changing light, endless beaches, historic towns, and rolling fields. Vineyard Folk features painters, potters, poets, musicians, and actors, among many others, and the unique ways they work, live, and play.  Above all, Vineyard Folk is a love letter to a remarkable island community. With personal interviews and candid photography, it is a collage of creativity, resilience, and hope. We celebrate these artists captured at this golden moment of time that may not last forever. On this episode you will meet some of the artists featured in the book- Brooke Adams, Brad Silberling, Michael Johnson, Juli Vanderhoop, Elizabeth Ceceil and author Tamara Weiss. THE FABELMANS is a coming-of-age drama film directed by Steven Spielberg and written and produced by Tony Kushner and Spielberg.  It is a semi-autobiographical story loosely based on Spielberg's adolescence and first years as a filmmaker. The tale is told as an original story of the fictional Sammy Fabelman, a young aspiring filmmaker who explores how the power of films can help him see the truth about his dysfunctional family. The film features an ensemble cast that includes Gabriel LaBelle as Sammy, with Michelle Williams, Paul Dano, Seth Rogen, and Judd Hirsch in supporting roles. The film is dedicated to the memories of Spielberg's real-life parents Leah Adler and Arnold Spielberg, who died in 2017 and 2020, respectively. At Valhalla Tracy was the executive in charge of production on the PBS award-winning documentary, "True Whispers: The Story of the Navajo Codetalkers" and helped develop Ang Lee's "Hulk," Marvel's "The Punisher," and Karyn Kusama's "Aeon Flux."After four years at Valhalla, she headed up development for Academy Award-winning actor Morgan Freeman's Revelations Entertainment, where she was involved in the development of films including "Invictus," directed by Clint Eastwood, and "10 Items or Less," directed by Brad Silberling. She was a producer on Richard Loncraine's film, "5 Flights Up," starring Diane Keaton, Morgan Freeman and Cynthia Nixon. Tracy also helped get Revelations into television when she sold "Through the Wormhole with Morgan Freeman" to Discovery Science Channel, where she served as Executive Producer on the Emmy-nominated series. She was also co-producer of the Peabody Award-winning “ESPN 30 For 30 Documentary, "The 16th Man," which won a special “Television with a Conscience” Emmy.Of all of her work at Revelations, she is most proud to have been instrumental in setting up, developing, and serving as an executive producer on the pilot of CBS' hit series, "Madam Secretary." Working with TV showrunner goddess Barbara Hall remains a career highlight. Tracy was a producer on 60 episodes of "Madam Secretary" before moving on from Revelations to launch Amasia's TV division.

Talking About John Cassavetes' 1974 film ‘A Woman Under the Influence with our guest Tami ReikerIn this episode of Movies We Like, we're joined by award-winning cinematographer Tami Reiker to talk about one of her favorite movies, John Cassavetes' 1974 film A Woman Under the Influence. This is a film Tami has often shown to directors she's worked with as they discuss the projects that influence them and what they want to pull from it to bring in as influences on the project. It's a powerful film that's full of incredible moments brought by both leads – Gena Rowlands and Peter Falk – not to mention fascinating direction by Cassavetes himself. How has it influenced Tami over her career and what does she pull from it?Tami's Current Project Surface on Apple TV+We also talk about the new series she's worked on with director Sam Miller and star Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Surface. For the episodes she worked on, Tami and Miller wanted to use swing shift lenses to amplify the disconnection Mbatha-Raw's character has from the world due to post-accident amnesia. It's a powerful tool and connects directly with their authorial voice. There's a lot to talk about with Tami about both A Woman Under the Influence and Surface on The Speakeasy. Tune in!Join the conversation with movie lovers from around the world on The Next Reel's Discord channel!About TamiAward-winning cinematographer Tami Reiker, ASC, made history by becoming the first woman to win an American Society of Cinematographers award. She took home the ASC Outstanding Achievement in Cinematography Award for her work on the HBO pilot, Carnivalé. Reiker recently worked on the highly anticipated new Apple TV+ series Surface starring Gugu Mbatha-Raw and created by Veronica West, bringing together innovative technology and breathtaking visuals for the first two episodes of the psychological thriller, each with director Sam Miller. She also lensed Regina King's directorial debut One Night In Miami, chronicling a fictional account of a real night when the lives of Cassius Clay, Sam Cooke, Jim Brown and Malcolm X are forever changed. The drama already made history at the 2020 Venice Film Festival as the first film directed by a Black woman to be selected and is also an official selection at the 2020 Toronto International Film Festival.Previously, Reiker photographed the action epic The Old Guard for Netflix and frequent collaborator director Gina Prince-Bythewood. Based on the graphic novel series of the same name, the film follows a group of immortal soldiers who must defeat a corrupt man trying to expose their secret. The feature shattered records after its release, becoming one of the top ten most streamed films in Netflix's history, with Prince-Bythewood becoming the first Black female director to land a spot on the list.Reiker's additional feature credits include: Beyond the Lights for Gina Prince-Bythewood, starring Minnie Driver, Danny Glover and Gugu Mbatha-Raw; the critically praised Pieces of April for director Peter Hedges; and High Art, a visual collaboration with director Lisa Cholodenko, which earned Reiker a Best Cinematography nomination at the Independent Spirit Awards. For television, Reiker lensed: episode one of Woman of The Movement, directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood; HBO Max's Delilah pilot for director James Griffiths; Marvel's Cloak and Dagger pilot; CBS's Charmed pilot, with director Brad Silberling; the pilot for Fox's Shots Fired, the critically praised ten-part series chronicling the investigation of a police shooting; and HBO's Getting On pilot for director Miguel Arteta. After beginning her career and making a name for herself in the New York film community, Reiker moved to Los Angeles where she still lives now, with her son. And we're back! The first NICOLAS CAGE review of 2022. It's City of Angels, a 1998 American romantic fantasy film directed by Brad Silberling and also starring Meg Ryan, Dennis Franz and Andre Braugher. Set in Los Angeles, California, the film is a loose remake of Wim Wenders' 1987 film Wings of Desire (Der Himmel über Berlin), which was set in Berlin, and I really wonder if that movie has as much of a problem with "angel rules" and "angel logic" as this one does.

In this episode Mark talks about one of his favourite films: the 1998 American romantic fantasy "City of Angels", directed Brad Silberling and starring Nicholas Cage and Meg Ryan. Set in Los Angeles, California, the film is a loose remake of Wim Wenders' 1987 film "Wings of Desire". As with the original film "City of Angels" tells the story of an angel, Seth (played by Nicholas Cage), who falls in love with a mortal woman, Dr. Maggie Rice (played by Meg Ryan), and wishes to become human in order to be with her. The film has been a favourite of Mark's since he first saw it in 1998, because of the truly heartfelt and emotional story that it tells about what someone might do, and what sacrifices someone might choose to make, to be the one that they love - even an angel, who might have to give up everything that makes them who they are and what they have always known. The soundtrack of the film - which features songs by the Goo Goo Dolls, Sarah Mclachlan, Alanis Morissette, U2, and Peter Gabriel - is also wonderful and emotionally evoking, as well as hauntingly memorable in some cases. To Mark, "City of Angels" has a wonderful message of hope that runs through it - and it always stirs up memories, emotions, and profound spiritual and philosophical questions within him about who we all are, why we are all here, and what awaits us after we die. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/markthepoet/message

He’s the friendliest ghost you know, the Harvey Comics character who appeared in multiple cartoon series and animated films dating back all the way to 1945 – Casper! Directed by Brad Silberling, Casper is the live-action film adaption of the Casper the Friendly Ghost franchise. Just in time for Halloween, rewind with us to 1995 to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the supernatural fantasy comedy drama which debuted the first ever fully CGI lead character in a feature film. Casper (voice by Malachi Pearson) is a kind young ghost who peacefully haunts Whipstaff Manor. When specialist Dr. James Harvey (Bill Pullman) is recruited by Carrigan (Cathy Moriaty) to communicate with Casper and his fellow spirits, he brings along his teenage daughter, Kat (Christina Ricci). Casper quickly falls in love with Kat, but their budding relationship is complicated not only by his transparent state, but also by his troublemaking apparition uncles and their mischievous antics.

A career retrospective with Jake Gyllenhaal on December 1, 2016. Moderated by Jenelle Riley, Variety. Jake Gyllenhaal, an Academy Award nominee, has established himself as one of the finest actors of his generation. With his new production company Nine Stories, he is also on his way to becoming a filmmaker of note – sourcing material, developing it from the ground up, collaborating with bold storytellers, and shepherding the projects through release. In 2014, he starred in Dan Gilroy’s Nightcrawler, which he also produced. For his performance as Louis Bloom, Mr. Gyllenhaal received BAFTA, Golden Globe, Screen Actors Guild, Critics’ Choice, and Spirit Award nominations, as well as Best Actor citations from numerous critics’ groups. He received an Academy Award nomination, and won a BAFTA Award, for his performance as Jack Twist in Ang Lee’s classic Brokeback Mountain, also for Focus Features. Working with some of the world’s finest filmmakers on both independent and studio features, Mr. Gyllenhaal has also starred in David Ayer’s End of Watch, which he executive-produced; Dennis Villeneuve’s highly acclaimed Prisoners and Enemy, playing a dual role in the latter; Richard Kelly’s cult hit Donnie Darko; Antoine Fuqua’s Southpaw; Jean-Marc Vallee’s Demolition; Baltasar Kormákur’s Everest; Jim Sheridan’s Brothers; Duncan Jones’ Source Code; David Fincher’s Zodiac; Sam Mendes’ Jarhead; John Madden’s Proof; Miguel Arteta’s The Good Girl; Brad Silberling’s Moonlight Mile; Nicole Holofcener’s Lovely & Amazing; Joe Johnston’s October Sky; and Ed Zwick’s Love & Other Drugs, for which he received a Golden Globe Award nomination. In 2014, Mr. Gyllenhaal made his Broadway debut in Nick Payne’s Constellations and his musical theatre debut in the Encores! production of Little Shop of Horrors. The actor made his New York stage debut in 2012 starring in If There Is I Haven’t Found It Yet, for the Roundabout Theatre Company, which earned him nominations from the Drama League and the Lucille Lortel Awards. The latter marked his first stage work since 2002, when he starred on London’s West End in Kenneth Lonergan’s revival ofThis is Our Youth, for which he won an Evening Standard Theater Award for Outstanding Newcomer. He recently formed Nine Stories, a production company acquiring and developing new material. The company is in development on a number of titles, including Denis Villeneuve’s The Son, which is based on Jo Nesbo’s critically acclaimed novel of the same name; a scripted limited series for A&E centered on cults throughout history; and the cartel drama The Man Who Made It Snow, to be directed by Antoine Fuqua. Additional projects in development include Theater of War, based on an episode of “This American Life,” which will be directed by Alex Timbers; and Ubisoft’s film adaptation of the Tom Clancy video game “The Division,” in which Mr. Gyllenhaal will also star. Through Nine Stories, he has produced Stronger, inspired by a true story and based on The New York Times bestseller of the same name. The movie, directed by David Gordon Green and to be released in 2017, is the deeply personal account of the heroic journey of Boston Marathon survivor Jeff Bauman (whom Mr. Gyllenhaal portrays). He currently stars in Focus Feature’s Nocturnal Animals.

After a series of short films, Director Brad Silberling was hired under contract like his eventual mentor, Steven Spielberg. Thanks to his style and attention to detail in his television work, Silberling was asked to direct ‘Casper,’ which was the first character-sync dialogue CGI characters. Since his first film he’s also directed movies like ‘Land of the Lost,’ ‘A Series of Unfortunate Events,’ ‘Moonlight Mile,’ and ‘City of Angels.’ In this interview, Silberling talks about avoiding being pigeonholed as a director, finding your passion as a creative, his inspiration to humanize a war criminal, and the importance of making dramas for grown-ups. In ‘An Ordinary Man,’ an infamous war criminal and former general (Ben Kingsley) spends his life on the run from international authorities when he is suddenly moved to a new hideout, where he develops a relationship with the maid that looks after him.  But when he discovers there is more to her story, he makes a decision that will drastically change both of their lives. Brad's latest is more the latter, a subdued and intimate character study featuring the legendary Ben Kingsley. AN ORDINARY MAN is now available on-demand and streaming everywhere, and it's definitely worth a look.  Brad shares some stories of his past work as well as what it took for him to return after a very long hiatus (sounds familiar).  Hope you enjoy this brief but insightful discussion with another true talent whose career I've enjoyed since the start! 00:00 - 10:00 - Intro 10:01 - 10:43 - City Of Angels Score Excerpt 10:44 - 25:02 - Interview with Brad Silberling 25:03 - 25:47 - Outro http://voicesvisions.net
