Have you ever wondered if you could run your business without Instagram? Thinking about a social media detox? How much time would you get back? How would it affect things like your revenue, your website traffic, and your overall visibility as a business owner? What other marketing tools would you use instead of social media? As someone who uses Instagram a lot in my marketing, I'm like the rest of us in that I have desired to throw in the towel from time to time, especially after moments like creating a reel that takes an hour to make and then feeling like it did nothing at all for your business. Shanna Skidmore joins me on the podcast to chat about her system for organizing personal finances and what business numbers you should be reviewing at the end of the year.We start the conversation, however, discussing her time away from her business from mid 2019-mid 2020. The short version of the story is that after her biggest launch ever in 2019, she walked away from her business with the intention of not returning. We talk about that season, her experience being away from her business and what she learned from it. This was one of my favorite conversations of 2022, largely because of the first half of our conversation. Today Krista and I are sharing three activities that we will doing together during our year-end review and planning meeting. While these activities aren't the only things we'll be discussing, we thought it would be more helpful to give y'all an idea of what sorts of things we focus on during these meetings vs. how to plan the meeting (more on that in a minute). We discuss an activity that will help kick things off and set the tone for the meeting that analyzes both the revenue driving activities of the business and how the team feels about those activities. Then we jump into an overview of how we examine our finances. We don't go into great detail because I'm releasing an episode in a few weeks with financial expert Shanna Skidmore who helps us explore this. And we end by discussing some of the marketing related efforts that we're going to take another look at.We have a few goals during these sorts of meetings. One is efficiency. And by that, I mean we want to figure out how we can do more with less—which ultimately means that we're figuring out what we can eliminate so as to make better use of our time and resources. It can be difficult cutting things out, but it's always amazing to me the growth that a little pruning can bring about. Beyond that, we of course want to create some space to get on the same page and dream together a bit about what the next year could look like.Sometimes the middle of these conversations aren't always easy—especially if you have a partner that you work alongside—they might have a totally different assessment of the year and what should be done the following year. God knows that has occasionally been the case with Krista and me… but these conversations are so necessary to have, and I'm always so grateful afterwards for having had them. There are so many ways to make your year-end review or planning meetings more effective. We don't jump into actually how to plan these reviews, although we do have other episodes that cover such things. Regardless of what your end-of-year meeting looks like, we hope you find one or more of these activities helpful. As always, links and resources can be found in the show notes. What is Enough? It's a question Shanna Skidmore has become known for, but to Shanna's surprise knowing what you need to fund the life you want and keep the business lights on wasn't a question many in the finance world felt was important to ask. In fact, she once had a mentor tell her “if you don't want more money you're just lying to yourself.” Redefining Success. Defining Enough. Building a business on your own terms. Sounds good in theory, but what does it look like to actually build a business that serves your life and your bank account? Today I'm handing over the mic and scooting over to the hotseat! You'll hear my own story of leaving the world of corporate finance to start my own consulting firm. Why I tend to walk in the opposite direction as most business “gurus” and financial guys. And how simply sharing my own money philosophy of “defining enough” revolutionized an entire industry. WILDFLOWER SHOWNOTES : shannaskidmore.com/shanna-skidmore

Well, today is part two of a wrap-up of my break from social media, and I took six months off and I'm just talking about the impact it's had on my life and my work. And today we're going to get practical. I'm going to answer some questions about, practically, how did I pull myself away from social media? What did that look like? How did I fill my time? But I'm most excited about my conversation with my friend Shanna Skidmore(!), which will happen later in this episode. So, I'll answer some questions first, then I'll ask Shanna some questions, and we had the most amazing conversation about it and how to build a life that you want. For the last six months, I've taken a break from social media and it has been so good. Today, I'm going to give you an update on how I liked it, what I missed, the best lessons I learned and how I'm going to do things differently when I come back. This is a topic I'm passionate about; I strongly believe we can't just let technology into our lives without being extremely thoughtful about it.  Because I want to leave you with my heart and my thoughts from my own experience, along with some practical tips on how to use social media rightly in our lives, and what rhythms did I replace social media—with and all that good practical stuff, I've actually decided to separate this into a two-part series. So this is going to be part one, which is the “heart” part of it—lessons, all about what I've learned and next week is going to be the practical side of it, and I'm going to have a special guest (and I'm really excited about that!). Now, before I jump into part one, I want to let you know about my special guest and an amazing live webinar that she's teaching on February 17th. Her name is Shanna Skidmore. I admire her SO much. I have learned so much from her and she actually runs her entire business without social media and it's for creative entrepreneurs—in a space that you would really think she should maybe be on social media. And one of the comments I get all the time is, oh, you know, I wish I could take a break from social, but my work depends on it, or I can never take a break from social media because it's directly tied to my income, or I'd leave it if I could, but I can't because my work depends on it. My friend Shanna has kind of challenged that thought and has been a trailblazer and honestly, such an example to me on how to run a successful business that's profitable without social media, or if you'd rather—with limited social media. Now, the webinar is called The Art of Six Figures: How to Build a Thriving Business on Your Own Terms. And that's the point! It's building a business that you love, and engaging with your work and with social media on your terms, with healthy boundaries and clarity.  Okay, I could literally talk about this all day because I love her. I've learned so much from her. And I think she answers a question a lot of creatives are wondering, which is how you can do this. So I wanted to share this resource with you! You can sign up right here! Also—spoiler alert—Shanna and I are going to be teaming up for something really good about this topic and about her webinar. So if you want to be in the know, be sure you're on my email list, and I'll be sure to tell you there or tune in next week and you'll learn a little bit more about it then, as well.  For the full show notes, head to nancyray.com/podcast/145.   Resources from this episode: Shanna's Webinar: The Art of Six Figures Join my email list Free Download: A Vision For Your Season Episode 042 - Book | Switch On Your Brain The Self-Driven Child, by William Stixrud and Ned Johnson Nancy Ray Book Club Episode 135 - An Update On My Social Media Break Episode 088 - Book | Digital Minimalism Episode 138 - 3 Habits to Put Social Media in its Place (Ep. 12 Replay) Affiliate links have been used in this post! My 7 Most Frequently Asked Pricing Questions Answered

Make It - The Creative Business Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 23, 2020 35:15

In the episode I answer the following frequently asked pricing questions:  1) Is there a formula for pricing or do I just need to guess my prices?  There is a pricing formula! In this episode I answer 7 questions and this is my most popular - Is there a formula I can use or should I just guess my prices? I also put together a Free Guide that will take you through the Pricing Formula. If you’re a visual learner (especially when it comes to numbers) I think you’ll find it very helpful.  (answer inspired by business finance hero Shanna Skidmore) 2) How do I price correctly when everyone else in my industry isn’t? Stay in your lane! There is more to this answer, but basically, I just encourage people to not look at the competition, but rather, look at the data and the facts. To run your business and for your business to be sustainable you NEED to price properly. 3) Should I list my prices on my website? I encourage you to get in front of your potential buyers in a conversation through email, over the phone, or by skype. If your prices are on your website, you may deter some people from even contacting you. These people may actually be willing to pay your price after you take them through a nurturing sales process. In a nutshell, you want to have as many people enquire as possible to have the best chance at converting the most people into high paying clients. Inside the episode, I give some ideas of when you need to have your prices on your website, but these are only in unique cases. 4) How should I price my services to friends and family? Short answer - just be consistent. It’s up to you! 5) Do I have to raise my prices to make more profit? Or is there another way to make more money? You can do other things such as decrease the costs in your business. The other option is to get more clients, but that’s not usually the desired outcome because that means more time investment. Basically you have two options to increase profit - increase price or decrease spending. 6) If I know I need to increase my prices, what do I do with current clients on retainers?  Communication is key and incrementally increasing your prices by 10-20% (no more) at a time. It’s also important to show how you’ll be adding value with the price increase. This will reassure current clients. Obviously, if you have one-off clients, you cannot increase your price. 7) What if people don’t book me because my prices are too high? You don’t want everyone to book you. The aim should be to get 30% of your enquiries turning into clients. Not everyone. Not everyone will pay your price and that’s ok. Money is one of the biggest things people hate talking about - making it, managing it, and everything that comes in between. We know we need it and we know we should manage it well. Even as small business owners it's hard to know what to charge yourself at, how to discuss money with clients, and even how we deal with money in general. We love talking about our purpose for our business but get totally anxious when discussing the actual finances of it. Today's episode is for everyone who struggles with talking about finances and money. We are joined by financial and business consultant, Shanna Skidmore, as she shares everything we need to know when it comes to money and happiness. About Shanna Just a numbers girl living in a creative world. Shanna is here to help you make money doing what you love! As a Former Fortune 100 financial advisor turned business consultant for creative entrepreneurs, she's on a mission to bridge the gap between the world of money and creative entrepreneurship so you can feel confident in your finances, clarity in your direction, and freedom to go on creating just as long as your heart desires! The Biggest Finance Advice to Small Business Owners Keep your business account separate. No matter how much you're making, it's important to keep everything in one place. Hire a bookkeeper. A bookkeeper is a person whose job is to keep records of the financial affairs of a business. By keeping a record, you're able to see where your business is at all times so there is no guesswork.Track your time. When you track all your time on a certain project, you can start determining the value of everything you're doing. You can then work backwards and learn what you need to price yourself or your services at. Shanna recommends using Toggl to track your time. The Four Money Mindsets These money personalities are how you feel about money to your core. Once you recognize your feelings with it, you can start making decisions and affects your actions based around that. Spender - spending money makes them feel secure, gives lavish gifts, spend for approval or love, believe that more money is the solution to the problem Saver - love security, they feel like no amount of money is enough money, they are afraid the money will go away, have a hard time of letting go, they need to learn it's okay to spend money Avoider - doesn't “do” numbers, doesn't want to know what the numbers actually are, they experience a lack of confidence, they'll price lower, lack of interest Martyr - believes the desire for money is evil so they give it all away, they sacrifice themselves, they give discounts, they have a hard time sticking to price, they don't hold on money for themselves** Looking for clarity in your business? A lot of us creatives are resistant to the cultural idea of ‘more is better,’ some even going so far as to view money as a dirty thing. Yet we HAVE to be profitable to continue doing our creative work. So, how do we come to understand the numbers without getting lost in a more-more-more mentality? How do we decide what is ‘enough’ and design a business to fit the life we want? Shanna Skidmore is a business strategist and finance coach who teaches creative entrepreneurs how to build a profitable business that works for the life they want. She combines her background in business, finance, psychology and art to support creatives in defining ‘enough’ and developing a business model that allows them to continue with their craft and make a living doing what they love. If you've ever dreamed of starting your own business, or you're in the weeds of growing that business of your dreams now, then we're gonna get along just fine!

After working alongside thousands of creative entrepreneurs on their business strategy and financial goals, I took the most confusing, frustrating, frequently asked (and frequently wine-and-tears accompanied) business concepts—financial planning, productivity, strategy, scale, mindset—and simplified them.  My husband says my creative genius is simplifying complicated things. I like that.

After ten years in the financial industry, I knew firsthand that a few simple (but not easy) steps had the power to transform a story. I helped failing businesses start thriving in less than 12 months. I served burned out creative professionals helping them to take month-long sabbaticals in less than 12 months. I saw women feel proud of the money they were contributing to their household.

Now I teach those steps to as many creative entrepreneurs as I possibly can.
