My guest today is the founder of The Newsletter Pro, a newsletter publishing agency that helps get real stories on real paper into real hands...like they used to do! He has managed to take what many would consider a dying industry to a $10 million revenue business. He's connecting business owners and their customers in a tangible way. Hardships into Opportunity I wanted to talk to Shaun not only because of his entrepreneurial experience, but also because of his story. He had the rough and misguided start that would send many men towards a pattern of self-destructive behavior. Yet, he pushed himself to be a stable provider for his family, a good example for his kids, and a compassionate business owner.
Shaun Buck discusses the single easiest and most effective way to increase retention rates, increase referrals, and instantly build long-lasting relationships with your clients. In particular, sending monthly mailings helps you stay top of mind with your clients, ensuring they talk about you and actively refer. Shaun Buck is “The Newsletter Pro'. He saw his own business go from “almost broke” to Thriving, just by using newsletters. But he screwed those up on his first try as well. In this episode of The 7-Figure CEO Podcast Casey sits down with Shaun Buck, CEO and founder of NewsletterPro.com. Shaun learned the value of sending newsletters to clients and prospects while owning a dry-cleaning business and chose to take that idea and make it into a business. Hear what Shaun has to say about the importance of newsletters for your business and how it can help your company grow. As a young kid, Shaun always dreamed of becoming a business owner—that dream became a reality when Shaun opened his first business at age 16; a pager company. Of course during this time pagers were on their way out and soon Shaun's business was too. But Shaun kept at it, and has since owned a handful of successful businesses, including one that he calls his dream business, The Newsletter Pro. With this business, Shaun helps business owners market and expand their companies. The Newsletter Pro took off from day one, growing over 4000% in the first two years alone, and it hasn't stopped growing since. Get practical steps from marketing expert Shaun Buck on how he grew his business. Including valuable insights on how you can apply the marketing lessons he has learned to your business. Business Management If you have a big business idea, but are still tied down by your current business do not hesitate, pursue your thought. Pivot your current business or go for the new business. Take your current business earnings and use that money to jumpstart your new business. Double-down where you believe you have the biggest opportunity. Hiring Employees Hiring is not committing. The most you are committing to an employee is a day's work. Hiring someone is not a permanent thing, people can be fired. Do not be scared to hire early because this could potentially hold back your business growth. Hire a person that fits in the culture of the office. This means that the potential employee should respect your mission, core values, and business purpose. Firing Employees Do not be afraid to fire someone. Make the firing process easy and quick. The firing process should be swift and to the point. Questions about the reasons for termination can be answered later so the person has time to process their thoughts. Most times the firing should not be a surprise, the employee should know why they are being let go. Try to give the person being fired warnings and consistent feedback. Newsletters Newsletters allow for businesses to communicate to customers and convert prospects. Creates a more personal relationship with your customers by sharing your life and business experiences. Create the content for the newsletters do not look to the customers for content. Write a newsletter that talks about you and a business lesson Promotions and things about your business can be inside the newsletter/ The main goal of the newsletter is that customers and prospects feel as if you, as a business owner, are smart and reliable. Know when to cut ties sending newsletters to certain customers. Personal Growth Be consistent with you learning and growth. Surround yourself with friends and business owners who can mentor you and teach you. The best thing you can do is talk to other business owners and have conversations about your business and other people's business. Read books that help you grow, listen to other people for change, attend conventions/conferences that help you learn. (6:27) Buck's book campaign has been very successful, and he has gotten many new leads and customers from it. In this week’s episode of the CEO Warrior Podcast, Mike Agugliaro interviews Shaun Buck. Shaun Buck is the CEO of Boise, Idaho-based The Newsletter Pro, the largest custom print newsletter company in the world—printing and mailing millions of newsletters annually for diverse industries all over the globe. He is the co-author of No B.S. Guide to Maximum Referrals and Customer Retention.
Shaun Buck – Customer Retention and Maximising Referrals Shaun Buck is the founder of Newsletter Pro, based in Boise, Idaho. A 5% needle move in customer retention is equal to an 80% increase in profits. Everyone is so focused on growth via new clients. But they rarely focus on the costs of acquisition. It is one of the most expensive things we do as business owners. Shaun said to himself that if he could get customers and keep them he'd make a whole lot more money. Customer retention became his focus Shaun talks of “tax free day” the day in the calendar that you work to before you've paid your taxes. In the US, it's around the 24 April. In the UK, per the Adam Smith Institute, it is a whole month later at the end of May! Shaun Applying this to customer retention for businesses. The “Day” for most businesses where new customers helps the bottom line is more like October, November or even December! This is because they get a new customer, then they lose a customer. It takes so long to grow that way. It is a drag on profits. So, a little time spent focusing on retention, not only helps you grow faster, but you'll see bigger profits. With existing customers, they already know, like and trust you. People don't typically give their money to people they DON'T know like and trust. Perry Belcher – an associate of Shaun's – “today we live in the single most difficult time to get a new customer, that's the bad news, but the good news is that it is the single best time to get a second sale.” Why do most customers leave? Rockefeller Institute study showed 67% of people leave because they feel the business doesn't care about them. They feel the business is indifferent to them. If the business doesn't care about you, and there is no relationship, then what is the determining factor for doing business with the company? Price. Without relationship, it is only price. Relationship and making your customers feel appreciated and valued and like they are being heard, that you are there to help them and you are on the same team, that's what keeps customers from leaving. Shaun doesn't expect to lose his customers. Last month, Shaun lost 1 from 400+ customers. He expects his customers to be with him for ever. He is realistic. People sell businesses, go out of business, come up on hard times, or they just decide they want to change approach. He sees his job is to minimise these things from happening – by relationship, by providing amazing service. Shaun figured all this out a long time ago. That apathy breeds attrition. In 2002/2003 he had a dry-cleaning company. One of the ways he got customers was going door to door every evening, signing them up, for his pick up and deliver dry-cleaning service. He said, that was brutal hard work. Shaun quickly realised he just didn't want to lose any of them. He needed to do everything he could to keep them. That was Shaun's start point in customer retention. What got Shaun into newsletters? The co-author of Shaun's book, Dan Kennedy, was an inspiration to Shaun. Shaun started reading Dan's books when 16/17 years old – around the late ‘90s. More recently Shaun has written about customer retention with Dan. No BS Guide to Maximum Referrals & Customer Retention – Dan S. Kennedy & Shaun Buck (Check it out on Amazon in UK http://amzn.to/2eL86wJ and in USA http://amzn.to/2g0kEwt ) Dan talked about newsletters. So, Shaun started using a newsletter to his dry-cleaning clients. But it was a pain in the butt to get out every month. Every time he sent out his newsletter, he got more referrals. Customers would give him good comments, leave him notes about it and enjoyed it! When Shaun was looking for a new business to setup, he figured that if newsletters were hard for him, it's got to be hard for everyone else too. Shaun's business – Newsletter Pro – was 120th last year in Inc. Magazine's Fastest Growth Privately Held US Companies 500. This year he is 343rd!
One of the most effective and affordable marketing strategies around is also one of the least sexy and most underutilized. That's the message shared by Shaun Buck, the CEO of The Newsletter Pro, in my interview with him for this episode. The strategy Shaun is speaking about is customer retention--i.e., increasing the average amount of time that a client or customer pays you for your services. You see, although you might like to think that when someone becomes your customer, they will be your customer forever, deep down you know that's not true. By making a conscious effort to increase the value of your customers by forming a close relationship with them, you will make it possible to spend more money to acquire a new customer. Not only that, but you'll get more referrals from your customers if they feel a strong connection and affinity for your brand. In my interview with Shaun, we talk about why customer retention is such an important marketing strategy, and why so many business owners aren't paying more attention to it. We also talk about how Shaun has used the tactic of print newsletters very successfully to increase customer retention both for his own business and for the clients of The Newsletter Pro. I guarantee that if you listen to the interview, by the end of it you'll be fired up about starting a printed newsletter for your business (or hiring Shaun to do it all for you).

Rubber-Meets-The-Road Tip * When Shaun Buck was 16 he was told “his life was over” when his girlfriend got pregnant. * He's now 35 years old, married with 5 boys, has 30 employees and has been self-employed full time since he was 21. * He bought a franchise via newsletter and was required to send a newsletter out every month back in 2002. * He sent “the world's most boring newsletter for two years” then figured it out and has been pretty consistent since then. * In 2011 he started doing newsletters for others. * Owns his equipment. No financing. * Sends over 200,00 newsletters out per month now. * He has journalists on staff who interview the clients and writes the content. * "People are a lot more interesting than they realize." [Tweet ""You're a lot more interesting than you realize" says @NewsletterPro. "] * Facebook is all about someone else's life. * You can find interesting posts on anyone's page. * Just pull out a few interesting posts and make the newsletter. * Content mix: imagine four sheets of paper. * The front page is the personal article. Shaun tells a personal story and ties it back to business. This is where you build the relationship. You want your readers to know, like and trust you. This is probably the most important piece of the newsletter. * Page 2: Who is your reader? How can you improve their lives? If you are a dentist you need to consider the wife who is the one making the appointments. She's 30-45 so what's she interested in? Maybe keeping her kids safe on Facebook or family-friendly activities. * Bottom of Page 2: * Maybe it's an entertainment section. His accountant says he reads the “Meme's” section called “Take a Break." * “Dumb Criminals” section. * If you're in B2C you can use recipes. They work! Recipe Books are the top-selling category in book stores. * Advanced Tip: make sure your contact info is included in the recipe so when they cut out the recipe they are thinking about you. * Have a referral contest. * Interview a client and let the client “sell” for you by telling their success story. [Tweet ""Interview a client and let the client “sell” for you by telling their success story," says @NewsletterPro. "] * Page 4: top is your address and postage section. * Also have an “Inside This Issue” with strong headlines. Your readers will sort their mail over the trashcan. * The bottom of Page 4 is important, too. You are using an 11”x17” folded twice so this becomes like Page 1 of a newspaper. (To be REALLY advanced don't complete the article on that page. Use a “Continued Inside” to get them to open the newsletter.) * To start, send a newsletter to past and current clients to stay top-of-mind. * Most people won't opt-in for a newsletter because they are accustomed to receiving boring newsletters. * Send them to prospects. You know how long to send it to them based on your sales cycle. [Tweet ""Send a newsletter to past and current clients to stay top-of-mind" says @NewsletterPro. "] * To measure ROI you can put tracking numbers on newsletters and also track retention. If retention improves you know it's working. * You can also do offers to track ROI. * His clients get different offers than everyone else. * Prospects get the same newsletter with different offers. * About 40% of his own clients are dentists so he does an offer just for dental prospects. The advanced part is to NOT send an offer out for at least three editions. You don't want to appear pitchy. When you do an offer, do it as an FSI - Free-Standing Insert. * He will scrape leads from places like Groupon so when he sees someone advertising there he sends them a cold newsletter. * Ideally, you start with 200 names at least. * He can also do “bulky mail” and include CDs / DVDs, etc. * His largest client started with 1,000 to 2,000 newsletters per month. * They own pet stores. It's retail so you wouldn't think it would work for them but they were good at tracking their “A” clients. * They wanted to include more ads, which Shaun doesn't usually like to do. * They included a 3-page circular and are killing it. * They've been able to cancel $500,000 in newspaper ads for an increase in just $10,000/mo in newsletter costs. * They can use variable data like their birthdays and anniversaries to give them special offers and messages. * Another client has an airsoft business and includes an FSI, which not only makes him money it covers all of his printing costs and more. * He usually works on a 6-month calendar with his clients. * He won the GKIC Marketer Of The Year award in March 2014. * You have to keep throwing spaghetti against the wall over and over to make the right stuff stick. * Only 35 people have ever canceled.
