This last week I've come across old CD cases and DVDs. I prescribe to a pseudo-minimal lifestyle, memories and emotions seem attached. I'm curious how others go about organize their old media. Keep it? Display it someday? Discard it? [Insert confused emoji] Rich Hebron website
Patty Shukla is an award winning American singer, songwriter, musician, author, and keynote speaker. She specializes in music tailored to early childhood curriculum. Her expertise stems from her pioneering work in educational and interactive music videos on YouTube since 2009, captivating millions worldwide on her youtube channel. Patty is part of the worship team at her church and spent years leading children's choirs! When she's not performing or composing, Patty travels extensively, sharing insights as a keynote speaker at educational workshops, both nationally and internationally. We think you'll hear her excitement for integrating learning into every song she produces. Monica even got to participate LIVE in a song called “Wiggle It”. Patty shares her personal story of how music helped her non-verbal son develop language skills and excel academically. She emphasizes the importance of incorporating movement into music to engage children and enhance learning. Patty also discusses the benefits of using music in special needs classrooms and the value of parent engagement through music resources. She encourages teachers to create playlists of educational songs on platforms like YouTube to share with parents. The episode concludes with a discussion on the power of traditional childhood games and the importance of reintroducing them in early childhood classrooms. Patty is passionate about using the power of music and movement to help young children learn skills across all learning domains. We loved that she reminded us about using music to build an inclusive environment with the children who might have some different abilities. We know music is a powerful tool in our classrooms. We hope this episode challenged you to be a little bit more intentional in which music you choose. Patty has LOTS of resources on her website including CDs and DVDs, she has a Youtube channel with TONS of built in playlists and it's all easily searchable. She even has an App if you're looking for a totally ad-free way to access her content on an apple device. We've linked everything in the show notes for you. And you might want to check out our newsletter and our blog this week as Monica shares even more information about the benefits of music in your classroom. In this is the next segment of the flooded house water cleanup in Atlanta. In this one, we're going to be continuing some more looking at the actual cleanup process some of the washing and sanitizing aspects. I get a number of questions related to the exterior wall of the home and generally what we will find is that the exterior wall can't well dry because there's enough once the wall is opened up. There's enough exposure both on the inside and outside to adequately dry it but there are some things that you will want to take a look at.If we're looking at a brick facing on a home, we want to make sure that the weep holes are open so that the water is draining out of that wall cavity, making sure that we've got airflow there to help with the drying of that brick facing. If we're going with a stucco facing on a house we'll need to be opening up that wall cavity on the inside. Again, making sure that we've got good airflow so that were drying both the inside and outside of that stucco surface. We also have a COVID-19 biohazard cleaning service we provide in Many cities including Minneapolis were we are based. The top rightpicture shows a wall with siding lap siding and then we have a fiberboard a thing, sometimes referred to as buffalo board and it'll really require a little more investigation with this one to determine whether that buffalo board is still intact and again by opening the inside removing the insulation. Now have airflow on both sides that may or may not be able to be salvaged in the bottom. In the left picture, it really shows that with most of our homes we have a sheathing surface that the outside siding or whatever is applied against and that cheating really will dry typically because of our vinyl siding. Our steel sliding the lap siding all allow a fair amount of airflow through them to allow for that drying process to take place so you really need to open the wall take a look at it but frequently what we will expect is that outside wall will dry down and we will not have to actually take that part of the wall apart. When we're looking at the electrical parts of our home, all of the electrical fixtures switch outlets circuit breakers submerged in the flood water will need to be replaced. Electric motors will need to be professionally reconditioned as I indicated earlier the mud and debris get in there and becomes an electrical hazard. It may affect the life of that motor as well, so we really need to determine is it worth having someone professionally recondition it or do I just get a new motor with the electrical wiring, it'll depend on the type of wire that is used and we will really need to consult an electrician or an electrical inspector. Have determined whether that needs to be replaced or not so with all of these wereally need to have an electrician or electrical inspector involved. As we start doing the refurbishing of the electrical system with photographs and other valuable materials generally, with photos if they are wet what's best is to put them into a plastic bag and freeze them. If we can put some wax paper between the layers that will stop any of thedeterioration and then we can do the water damage restoration cleanup later. Important papers typically will end up musty and moldy so we probably need to photocopy them and once they're dry and then discard the originals CDs/DVDs generally, they can be rinsed and cleaned up with water.Dried crawlspaces are kind of a special area that we need to look at because most of the homes should have a poly orplastic, on that kind of floor in the crawlspace but many of them do not we're going to have a very saturated environment. In that crawl space that needs to be dried out and we need to remove the plastic. If it is there removeother things that might be in the crawl space and then we need to dry it as rapidly as we can and what works bestfor that is ventilation moving air, through the crawl space we recommend putting a fan facing to the outdoors sowe're pulling air in through one side and then the fan is forcing the air out. Another side we want to vacuum in thatcrawl space because if we put positive pressure in there if we face the fan blowing into the crawl space it'll pushany air through plumbing openings or other openings up into the living space and contaminate that. We don't wantthat so we want the vacuum. We want the suction by blowing the fans of the outdoors and that then allows us to veryeffectively dry that soil it'll take a long time for the soil to dry but that is how we will dry that area. Once we getit all dry then, we put the plastic back on the soil once we have everything opened up they have all of the debris removed. Then we look at flood cleaning structure and the recommendation is to use water and flush all of the non-porous surfaces. Some type of sprayer is shown in that top picture really works quite well too, to flush off all of the larger mud and debris. Once we've got it flushed off then, we come in and actually use a detergent to scrub off the surface and really what's my command that is a two bucket system, one that has detergent in it and then a second one that it'sthe rinse bucket. So when we get done scrubbing, we rinse out our mop or our rags or whatever we're using in therinse bucket until it's clean. Then we go into the detergent bucket and back to the cleaning surface and we'll haveto change the water in that rinse bucket frequently, as we're removing the dirt and cleaning the surface. They reallyrecommend a phosphate soap or detergent be used because of phosphate detergent can leave a film on thesurface that mold will grow readily on, so we prefer a non-phosphate type detergent. Once we've got the surface, all scrubbed down then the recommendation is to rinse with clean water then finally if we're looking at non-porous surfaces. So if we're looking at a hard surface such as concrete in a basement, we can sanitize that other non-porous surfaces. We can sanitize wood but we cannot treat. There are very few products available for trying to sanitize or treat wood, but we're looking at hard and non-porous surfaces. With any of the sanitizing that we're doing, we hear a lot about using bleach or using other BETT biocides as part of the process of cleaning up flood damage at home, but it's very important that we make sure that we use those products according to the label. There will be on that bottle, a label that gives all of the information and that really is the law these are registered products and it's important that we use them according to that label. Most of the products that we're going to have available to us just about all of the products are not effective at doing disinfecting on porous material. So again, when we're looking at that wood studs. We're looking at wall plywood that we really can't sanitize, but what we're looking at is hard non-porous surfaces but it's important that the biocide go on to a clean surface. Most all of the biocides are neutralized and become ineffective if they are applied to organic material so we shouldn't use a biocide. When we first come into a home, we only do the bio side on a clean surface and they'll specify a required exposure time. Most of these bio sides are hazardous materials, so it's important that we use our personal protective equipment. They require that the area be ventilated and some of the typical or common biocides that are available are alcohol sodium hypochlorite or chlorine bleach hydrogen peroxide iodine quaternary ammonium chloride and synthesized phenolic compounds and so there are a number of products available but generally, what we're talking about is bleach and as I indicated we need to follow the label on bleach it only is for non-porous hard materials and surfaces so concrete glass metal. So if we're working with on our appliances etc. that's where we will use the chlorine bleach. We need to use personal protective equipment gloves and goggles. The area needs to be ventilated because the hole or the gas that's given off from the bleach is a hazardous gas can cause lung irritation, so we need adequate ventilation. You'll need to look at the bottle, to see what the recommended dosages or solution strength is, but typically it'll be three-quarters of a cup of bleach per gallon of water. We need to apply enough of it to keep as wet for five minutes because bleach is corrosive. We won't need to then rinse that surface off and then dry it and so though. Why we would use chlorine bleach? Again, it is on appliances could be used on concrete but not on structural woodsince biocides are considered a disinfectant and our pesticide. They are a regulated material and anything that carries a designation. A disinfectant has to be registered with EPA and will carry an EPA registration number. It as they get that number or that registration, they need the document to EPA that indeed their product works and if you're trying to determine, this product indeed a registered product or not in addition to looking actually on the label you can go to the AG department website, that is listed here on the site. On the slide, AG department command they'll actually link to our water damage Atlanta website servicerestorationga.com/water-damage-atlanta and all of the products that are registered in Atlanta are listed there. Their labels all of theinformation that you would need if you have somebody else applying the disinfectant. In your building, it's important to make sure that they are certified and have had the training to apply that chemical and in Atlanta, they wouldbe certified under the home and industrial category. So that brings us to the end of this segment looking at the flood house restoration cleanup series and the final segment will be related to drying flooded home out the home, which is probably as important as all of the other steps that we have already talked about.

I always look forward to joining ecommerce conferences. It's a great place to meet up with old friends and network with new people. Many of those I've met at these events have become guests on this podcast. Phil Leahy is no different. An ecommerce veteran, he built one of the largest eBay businesses retailing CDs & DVDs. He was the #1 eBay seller in Australia for a number of years. Somewhere along the way, he founded the Retail Global conference. Today, his company Retail Global Events is hosting these conferences in Australia and the United States. Phil and I met at the Global Sources Summit in Hong Kong. He approached me after my presentation and invited me to come and speak at Retail Global Las Vegas next month. In turn, I've asked him to come on the show to give us information about this much-awaited gathering of ecommerce influencers, sellers, and online marketplace representatives. With that, here are some takeaways from the talk that we had. How did Retail Global start? Retail Global, formerly known as The Internet Conference, started around 13 years ago to address the need of having a local conference in Australia where online sellers can share information freely. Its initial aim was to help people sell successfully on eBay but has since morphed into ecommerce, eventually including discussions and workshops for today's biggest marketplace, Amazon. It wasn't until four years ago when Phil was able to bring Retail Global to American shores. The year 2012 marked the first Retail Global Las Vegas conference. Now more than a decade later, both Retail Global conferences in Australia and the United States are attended by hundreds of ecommerce entrepreneurs from across the globe. The biggest influencers and success stories in the industry speak at these events. Stats for Retail Global Las Vegas 75 speakers 50 exhibitors 5 different sessions running concurrently 2 marketplace streams centered around eBay and Amazon Keynote speakers include Sean Dollinger, CEO of Namaste Technologies and Bob Schwartz, Founding President of Magento & Nordstrom.com, who will serve as the conference MC Amazon and eBay will be speaking at the event and will set up exhibition booths as well 20% average increase in turnover for ecommerce sellers who have attended the event and used what they learned to scale their business. We wrap up this session with Phil offering listeners a simple ecommerce tip but with the potential to have a massive impact. He urges other online sellers to include a small gift when shipping out a customer's purchase. “Surprise, delight, aftersale and don't advertise it.” he says. Retail Global Las Vegas will be happening at Planet Hollywood on October 9-11. Use the code for ECOM200 to get $200 off your ticket. A few months ago, we sent out a survey on a topic that appears to be the bane of many listeners' existence: digital clutter. Over one third of respondents told us that the thing that drives them MOST crazy – the biggest, worst, most frustrating clutter quagmire in their lives – is photos. We promised you a podcast and a plan of attack, and our word was good (if a little bit, um, enthusiastic – listen above). With the help of organizational guru Alan Henry, Deputy Editor of Lifehacker, we've put together a customized step-by-step system to help you back up, sort, and organize your digital photo collection for the long haul. By then end of this process, you're going to be scrolling through your pictures and contemplating the role photos really play in our lives. But first, the time has come to get your photos in shape. Seriously. Now. It'll be more fun than you think. Mostly. The Note to Self System For Decluttering Your Photos and Coming to Terms With Your Mortality I. The Basic ToolsII. Decide How Deep You Want to Go Steps for the Casual Snapshooter Steps for the Moderate Snapshooter Steps for the Enthusiastic Snapshooter Find Your Photos: A List of Places to Look III. Tell Us What You Found (Part Two!) The Basic Tools According to Alan, these are the terms, tools, and basic tricks you'll need to get started – though how far you go with them is up to you. See: Deciding How Deep to Go. Back-up services: This is a centralized place on the cloud where you can get to the raw files of your photos if you need to. Alan recommends Dropbox, but iCloud, Google Drive, OneDrive or the like could serve a similar function, so long as you're willing to pay for extra storage. One work-around: sign up for an extra account just for photo storage purposes. Auto-upload: You have two options with your back-up service. The first is turning on the auto-upload feature, which means you'll be syncing the full-sized files to your computer. If you want to get these photos printed, use another service like Apple Photos or Picasa or Aperture, or plan to edit your photos with software such as Photoshop, this is a good idea. The other, more space-friendly option: leave that setting off, and instead be really judicious about how many of your photos you sync to your computer, or commit to going in and taking the ones you don't want down. This is going to take some introspection, some cutting-of-your-losses, and also maybe some back-up hardware. Back-up hardware: An external hard drive that can hold all of the files you don't want taking up space on your devices. It's the digital version of flossing your teeth. In this case, pick whatever works for you – if you've got less than 64 gigabytes of files you care about, a solid USB could work. If you've got a lot more than that (or if you just want to keep your options open), you should spring for an external hard drive. Photo management services: This is the service you'll use to help you categorize and sort through your pictures, whether that's by date, location, or content. Alan's favorite is Google Photos, which gives you unlimited space as long as your photos fall below a certain resolution (16 megapixels or 1080p HD video). You can set it so that Google will automatically reduce anything above that size to lower quality as well – for most people this should be just fine for organizing and digital-viewing purposes. From there, Google's photo categorization technology will help you label and organize the photos into albums and galleries. You could also choose a social media platform like Facebook or Instagram, you just have to commit to making them more or less public. Facial recognition: A type of deep learning used by such services as Google Photos to categorize and organize your photos. This comes with some very real caveats. Scanner: The best way to collect all your old physical photos and store them with your digitla photos. Alan says you can go high tech and buy a picture scanner (he recommends the Doxie or the Doxie Go WiFi) to scan them at home, or send them out to get scanned. Or – if you're OK with really low fidelity– you can just take a picture of the picture. Meta! Privacy/sharing settings: Be sure to double check that you're only sharing what you want to share, no matter which services you choose. That said, Alan Henry says his rule is to only upload the images he is OK with his friends and family seeing. The only way to absolutely ensure privacy (well, as much as we can possibly absolutely ensure privacy), is to avoid using the cloud altogether. In Alan's words: "As for what to snap and what not to snap - well, I'm not of the mindset that 'if you don't want it public you shouldn't take it or store it on the Internet' – that blames *people* for problems with *technology.* However, it's important to be mindful when you snap, and maybe take it into your own hands to choose what to upload and what not to, then back up or encrypt anything you want to save but don't want out of your reach to delete at any time. :)" via GIPHY Decide How Deep You Want to Go Alan thinks we all fit into one of three photo-taking categories: casual snapshooters, moderate snapshooters, and enthusiastic snapshooters. Figuring out which category you belong to will help you decide how far you really need to go in your personal photo-decluttering process. You've been sorted! (Kristeli Zappa M./Note to Self) BUCKET 1: THE CASUAL SNAP SHOOTER Characteristics: You have a bunch of photos all over the place, but you're not as concerned about organizing the past as you are setting up a solid system for the future. You primarily take photos with your phone. Your goal is to go from disorganized to organized, not necessarily to group all of your photos in the same place. Your steps: Pick a system for automatic back-up. Download the app if you don't have it already. Turn on auto-upload. On Dropbox – Alan's pick – this is called “camera upload.” On Google Drive, this is “back-up and sync." On iOS, this is "iCloud photos." That's it! Save your password somewhere safe. Invest in an external hard drive if you're feeling really responsible. Digital hygiene, everybody. Be sure to tell us what you've found. BUCKET 2: THE MODERATE SNAP SHOOTER Characteristics: For the most part, your photos are already digital – just in a billion different places. You may have a few old phones, some SD cards from a DSLR or other high-end digital camera, but you're not terribly concerned with really old physical photos. You probably have hundreds (or maybe a couple thousand but no more than that) of photos you care about, and want them to be organized, both past and present. Your Steps: Turn on auto upload for your back-up system of choice (i.e., Dropbox). On Dropbox – Alan's pick – this is called “camera upload.” On Google Drive, this is “back-up and sync." On iOS, this is "iCloud photos." Choose your photo management service, and transfer the photos you care about the most into it (i.e. Google Photos.). Start hunting down the rest of the digital photos you really care about and pull them into your photo management service. Be judicious: What's really worth migrating off of, say, that Flickr account you started and never went back to? Which Facebook Photos do you want to make sure you're saving in higher quality? Did you have a SmugMug account you need to check? Once you've uploaded the photos you care about most into this central service, look through the albums it has created for you. See where the system has sorted it correctly, and where it has gotten details wrong. Take over as the human here, and start adjusting into a system that will be meaningful to you. This can be as intense of a process as you choose, just be sure to label with names that will be memorable. (I.e., not “August 2015,” but “Trip to Paris With Family.”) This system should recognize dates and location at the very least. If they're wonky – and older photos probably will be – pick and choose which ones you care about correcting. Starting to sort through your photos will also help you jog your memory about any meaningful pictures you may have forgotten. Track them down, rinse, repeat. BUCKET 3: THE ENTHUSIASTIC SNAP SHOOTER Characteristics: You have thousands of photos — probably more than Dropbox or Google Photos' drag-and-drop interfaces can handle in one go. You use multiple devices, including cameras with SD cards and phones. You're looking for all of your memories to be organized, both past and present. You might even want to organize all of the photos from the whole family's set of gadgets, like phones or tablets everyone uses. Your Steps: Pick a back-up system. Turn on auto-upload for your current and future photos. Let the current batch upload. This could take a few minutes. On Dropbox – Alan's pick – this is called “camera upload.” On Google Drive, this is “back-up and sync." On iOS, this is "iCloud photos." Once you're done uploading, drag and drop as many of your already-digital but easily-accessible photos from your back-up system to your photo management system. For now, draw the line at your primary devices—the laptops or computers you already use, the phone you already use, and the SD card currently in your favorite camera you've been meaning to back up. Aim to get the majority of your current and most recent photos centralized. Once the bulk of your current photos are on your two services, spend some time getting in touch with your memories again, building galleries and doing searches through your most recent upload. Look through the albums your photo management service has created for you, and see where the system has sorted it correctly, and where it has gotten details wrong. Start sorting into albums that will be meaningful to you. This can be as intense of a process as you choose, just be sure to label with names that will be memorable. You're also teaching the system which details actually matter to you. From here, start hunting down old photos to add to the collection. Then, batch by batch, pull in old folders. Then, as you have the time, energy, or desire to centralize those old photos, you can power up that old laptop and upload them, or dump them to an external hard drive and upload them in batches (all of your old 2003 trip photos at once, for example.) This way you're making continual progress without committing yourself to a week-long wrestling match with the tendrils of Google and Dropbox every time you want to back-up your memories. When you're as far as you're going to get for the moment... tell us what you've found! Where to Look For Old Photos If you're like most people, you've probably stored your photos in all kinds of different places over the years. Here's a not-at-allcomprehensive-but-hopefully-inspirational list of places to look: Your phone's built-in photos app Your old phone's built-in photos app Photo apps on your laptop/PC Drive/ Desktop Folders on your laptop/PC External harddrive CDs/DVDs USBs Old cameras Email Text messages (these can take up a surprising amount of space!)

Rubber-Meets-The-Road Tip * When Shaun Buck was 16 he was told “his life was over” when his girlfriend got pregnant. * He's now 35 years old, married with 5 boys, has 30 employees and has been self-employed full time since he was 21. * He bought a franchise via newsletter and was required to send a newsletter out every month back in 2002. * He sent “the world's most boring newsletter for two years” then figured it out and has been pretty consistent since then. * In 2011 he started doing newsletters for others. * Owns his equipment. No financing. * Sends over 200,00 newsletters out per month now. * He has journalists on staff who interview the clients and writes the content. * "People are a lot more interesting than they realize." [Tweet ""You're a lot more interesting than you realize" says @NewsletterPro. "] * Facebook is all about someone else's life. * You can find interesting posts on anyone's page. * Just pull out a few interesting posts and make the newsletter. * Content mix: imagine four sheets of paper. * The front page is the personal article. Shaun tells a personal story and ties it back to business. This is where you build the relationship. You want your readers to know, like and trust you. This is probably the most important piece of the newsletter. * Page 2: Who is your reader? How can you improve their lives? If you are a dentist you need to consider the wife who is the one making the appointments. She's 30-45 so what's she interested in? Maybe keeping her kids safe on Facebook or family-friendly activities. * Bottom of Page 2: * Maybe it's an entertainment section. His accountant says he reads the “Meme's” section called “Take a Break." * “Dumb Criminals” section. * If you're in B2C you can use recipes. They work! Recipe Books are the top-selling category in book stores. * Advanced Tip: make sure your contact info is included in the recipe so when they cut out the recipe they are thinking about you. * Have a referral contest. * Interview a client and let the client “sell” for you by telling their success story. [Tweet ""Interview a client and let the client “sell” for you by telling their success story," says @NewsletterPro. "] * Page 4: top is your address and postage section. * Also have an “Inside This Issue” with strong headlines. Your readers will sort their mail over the trashcan. * The bottom of Page 4 is important, too. You are using an 11”x17” folded twice so this becomes like Page 1 of a newspaper. (To be REALLY advanced don't complete the article on that page. Use a “Continued Inside” to get them to open the newsletter.) * To start, send a newsletter to past and current clients to stay top-of-mind. * Most people won't opt-in for a newsletter because they are accustomed to receiving boring newsletters. * Send them to prospects. You know how long to send it to them based on your sales cycle. [Tweet ""Send a newsletter to past and current clients to stay top-of-mind" says @NewsletterPro. "] * To measure ROI you can put tracking numbers on newsletters and also track retention. If retention improves you know it's working. * You can also do offers to track ROI. * His clients get different offers than everyone else. * Prospects get the same newsletter with different offers. * About 40% of his own clients are dentists so he does an offer just for dental prospects. The advanced part is to NOT send an offer out for at least three editions. You don't want to appear pitchy. When you do an offer, do it as an FSI - Free-Standing Insert. * He will scrape leads from places like Groupon so when he sees someone advertising there he sends them a cold newsletter. * Ideally, you start with 200 names at least. * He can also do “bulky mail” and include CDs / DVDs, etc. * His largest client started with 1,000 to 2,000 newsletters per month. * They own pet stores. It's retail so you wouldn't think it would work for them but they were good at tracking their “A” clients. * They wanted to include more ads, which Shaun doesn't usually like to do. * They included a 3-page circular and are killing it. * They've been able to cancel $500,000 in newspaper ads for an increase in just $10,000/mo in newsletter costs. * They can use variable data like their birthdays and anniversaries to give them special offers and messages. * Another client has an airsoft business and includes an FSI, which not only makes him money it covers all of his printing costs and more. * He usually works on a 6-month calendar with his clients. * He won the GKIC Marketer Of The Year award in March 2014. * You have to keep throwing spaghetti against the wall over and over to make the right stuff stick. * Only 35 people have ever canceled. If you stick with this for 6 months you'll see the results.
