Series of animated short films produced by Walt Disney Productions from 1929 to 1939
POPULARITY
Color Rhapsodies is a series that, at least up to this point, has mostly been a Silly Symphonies ripoff tonally, with overly cutesy aesthetics and little substance. There's been exceptions, but for the most part they've stayed away from more gag-focused fare or more dramatic storytelling. So today, we're going to look at two cartoons, one that's very gag-focused and one that's very dramatic! Do either of these cartoons succeed in what they attempt, and more importantly, do they hold up for the modern viewer? Walt Disney famously hated sequels, though this wasn't an opinion he always held. At one point in time he was all for creating sequels to the hit cartoon Three Little Pigs, but when each short proved to be diminishing returns (at least financially), it contributed to his dislike of the concept of sequels. But looking back at this, the 2nd sequel in the series, were audiences right to dismiss it? Or should we be sad that Three Little Pigs never evolved into a long-running series? The Happy Harmonies series is an oft-forgotten series of shorts that largely serve as a vehicle for the increasingly racist depictions of former Looney Tunes star Bosko, and also a bunch of cartoons that ape the sensibilities of Disney's Silly Symphonies series. Which is to say, it's oft-forgotten because there is not much there of quality to remember. That said, the series did, through this cartoon, harbor the directorial beginnings of a man who would go on to immeasurably affect the animation industry, and thus, we turn our eyes upon To Spring, and ask: were William Hanna's talents obvious, even from the beginning? Sometimes a simple story with a fun execution is really all it takes to make something fun. That is, at least, what this short seems to be going for, with a standard Romeo/Juliet story of warring kingdoms and star-crossed lovers, but with an execution involving anthropomorphic instruments and artillery that shoots music notes. Does this all come together admirably, or does it end up falling apart? Listen to find out! --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/howsitholdup/support

Disney cartoons generally stay within a certain range of tones, and 'dark comedy' does not fit within that range. And yet, this is what we are presented with in this cartoon - a dark comedy about a bird getting murdered and the farce of a trial that happens as a result. With celebrity bird caricatures, jokes about police brutality and maybe Disney's true First Gay Character, there's a lot going on in this cartoon... but is it actually any good? Synopsis Today's date marks the official birthday of a quintessential American form of 20th century music—for cartoons. It was on November 18, 1928, that the first-ever animated cartoon with its own synchronized soundtrack debuted at the Colony Theater in New York City. This was Walt Disney's Steamboat Willie starring Mickey Mouse, who amazed audiences when he spoke up in a squeaky, falsetto voice provided by none other than Disney himself. Mickey pulled the whistle on his steamboat—a startling sonic effect in those days—and, oblivious of the impending animal rights movement, coaxed music from various squeezed and plucked barnyard colleagues. That music was composed by a quiet, unassuming theater organist out of Kansas City named Carl Stalling, who was soon lured to Hollywood by Disney to work on subsequent Mickey Mouse and Silly Symphony cartoons. In 1936, Stalling joined the Warner Brothers studios, and for the next 22 years was the music director for classic Porky Pig, Bugs Bunny, and Daffy Duck cartoons. Stalling's wonderfully wacky and endlessly inventive music was usually ignored by “serious” music critics as beneath notice. Ironically, his scores feature the same dizzying shifts of mood, tempo and instrumentation as the most complex avant-garde scores of the post-war period: Stockhausen and Boulez meet Tweety and Sylvester? Music Played in Today's Program Carl Stalling (1888-1974) Dinner Music for a Pack of Hungry Cannibals and To Itch his Own Warner Bros. Studio Orchestra Warner Bros. 26027
What is the most controversial movie of all time? It might be some of the films we've already talked about but Walt Disney's post Civil War live action/animation hybrid Song of the South is definitely part of the conversation. It hasn't been released theatrically in the states since 1986, before some of us were born. Does it deserve to remain in the Disney Vault like images from Fantasia, The Rescuers and Who Framed Roger Rabbit? Or should it be widely available for the public to decide?Tune in as Mike and Trevor discuss the problematic nature of Joel Chandler Harris' tales of the south, Walt Disney's history with and surrounding the film and how it led to one of Disneyland's most beloved attractions.Warning!! The following episode involves several serious and ugly topics including slavery and racism. If you're looking for a more whimsical Disney review, unfortunately you'll have to look somewhere else.

Synopsis We have a silly anniversary to note today – seriously! On today's date in 1929, Walt Disney released his first "Silly Symphonies" cartoon. Entitled "The Skeleton Dance," it depicted four skeletons dancing and making music in a graveyard, employing bizarre instruments, including an unfortunate cat played like a fiddle and the skeletons' own bones, played like a xylophone. While its release on Halloween might have been more appropriate, perhaps "The Skeleton Dance" provided some pleasurable spinal chills for moviegoers on a hot August evening back in 1929. In any case, this "Silly Symphony" was a huge success for Disney, became an instant classic, and was voted #18 in a 1994 poll of "The 50 Greatest Cartoons of All Time" by professional animators. And speaking of classics, a bit of Edvard Grieg's spooky "March of the Trolls" was used to great effect in "The Skeleton Dance." But credit for its success should go first to Carl W. Stalling, a legendary composer and arranger of cartoon music and absolute master of unexpected segues, witty allusions, and surreal orchestration, and second, to pioneering Disney animator Ub Iwerks, likewise a master in his field. | Chuck Jones, an animator famous for his much later Warner Brothers cartoons like Bugs Bunny and the Road Runner, had worked for Iwerks' studio in his youth, and put it this way: "Iwerks is Screwy spelled backwards." Music Played in Today's Program Edward Grieg (1843-1907) March of the Trolls

In a special two-part episode, Abby and Robbie Martin examine the current firestorm surrounding fake populist Ron DeSantis waging a political war with Disney originating from the passing of the 'Don't Say Gay' bill in Florida. They cover his extensive neocon policies and hardcore Zionism that make his "populist" label spurious and no more than political theater. In the second edition, Abby and Robbie dive deeper into what could be behind the new weaponized rhetoric of the right calling gay teachers and their political enemies 'groomers'. They discuss the disturbing trend of anti-LGBTQ legislation sweeping the country and what think tanks are behind the bills. As they discuss the organizations fueling this artificial culture war, strange associations emerge like Uyghur baseball teams, the 'Broken Windows Theory' and even the CIA. They wrap by discussing the history of LGBTQ repression in the US. This week we watch another Disney cartoon, but no Mickey this time, we're back to the Silly Symphonies! They haven't yet made the leap to color, but this one feels a bit important with its focus on dramatic story beats over gags and the fact that it was eventually remade years later for the very last Silly Symphony. Is this older version worthwhile on its own merits, or is it begging to be replaced? Listen to find out! --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/howsitholdup/support

This week, we go back to the early days and Shawn Degenhart takes a close look at the man who helped create the Silly Symphonies. The Mouse Castle Lounge Podcast: Disney News and Interviews, Cocktails and Conversations
Disney historian Didier Ghez is once again paying a visit to the Lounge—this will be his fourth time. He just can't get enough of us. It's always a pleasure to have Didier on the show and today he's here to talk about his latest project, They Drew as They Pleased, a book series celebrating the great concept and story artists of Disney's past. Before an animator begins to work magic with a character, he or she draws inspiration from the sketches and designs of concept artists. The Disney Studios set the standard for this artistic collaboration beginning in the 1930s, bringing aboard major talents such as Albert Hurter, Ferdinand Horvath, Gustaf Tenggren and Bianca Majolie. Didier's first volume shines the spotlight on these artists, whose influences can be seen in numerous Mickey Mouse and Silly Symphony short cartoons of the era as well as feature films like Snow White and Seven Dwarfs, Pinocchio, and Fantasia. Much of the art Didier has compiled comes from rarely seen private collections or from deep inside the vaults of the Disney Animation Research Library. It's a genuine treat to be able to see them publicly for the first time. Just as fascinating are the book's biographical notes, which give a compelling look not only at the talent and temperament of the artists profiled, but also insight into what it was like to work for Walt Disney at the beginning of the studio's first golden age. We cannot recommend They Drew as They Pleased enough and we cannot wait to see what the future volumes hold. Here today to talk as he pleases is Didier Ghez, Tim's guest in The Mouse Castle Lounge. www.TheMouseCastle.comRSS Feed: http://themousecastle.libsyn.com/rss
