Show Notes We were introduced to a wobbly legged pre-cursor Simba this week as we watched 1942's Bambi. With the story arc of simply growing up, we get to see baby Bambi and his woodland friends frolic freely until Man comes and does what he does best - destroy everything. But everything comes out twitterpated in the end. Between Disney's much beloved Golden and Silver eras is the 'Wartime' era, which is significantly less beloved and talked about. Virtually all of the movies in this period were collections of animated shorts, be they many in number such as Melody Time or only two not-quite-feature-length shorts, like Ichabod and Mr. Toad. But Saludos Amigos and Three Caballeros, while similar, are a bit different in design and purpose. While certainly a vehicle for shorts, both films are also a vehicle for exploring Latin America, with the first film featuring a documentary sort of approach and the latter film incorporating a very loose narrative to connect its pieces. In many ways, by modern standards both films are undeniably quaint. But that doesn't necessarily mean they're bad... so how do these things hold up, all this time later? Have you taken time to see some animated features on Disney+ that go way back into Walt Disney's own vault. During the 1940s you will find Disney animated features like Melody Time, Saludos Amigos, and Make Mine Music. These were known as package films, similar to Fantasia, but with far less attention to detail. They compose the War Era, which was during World War II and its aftermath. This era was between the Golden age of Disney which included Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, and the Silver Age which started with Cinderella. Fun & Fancy Free is one of those anthology films of the War Era, and is the title of a chapter that describes how Walt and his brother Roy got through a period that was actually anything but fun and fancy free. It's just one chapter in my book, A Century of Powerful Disney Insights, and it has implications in many ways to Disney's own challenges today. Join us for anything but Fun and Fancy Free. __________________________________________________________ My new book, A Century of Powerful Disney Insights is available! Now available on Amazon! Brad and Jake tackle, but Brad hasn't seen any movies from 1943, so he recommends the acclaimed The Life & Times of Colonel Blimp. This unconventional epic spanning the Second Boer War and both World Wars was helmed by the Archers (Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger), and starred Roger Livesey, Anton Walbrook, and Deborah Kerr in knockout performances. Jake, with little in his 1943 arsenal, asked Brad to watch Disney's Saludos Amigos. But since it's more of a tourism ad than it is a movie, Brad took the opportunity to rank all 61 Disney Animated Features released at the time of this recording, from Snow White to Strange World. Other movies mentioned in this episode: Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (1937), Pinocchio (1940), Fantasia (1940), Dumbo (1941), Bambi (1942), The Three Caballeros (1944), Make Mine Music (1946), Fun and Fancy Free (1947), Melody Time (1948), The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad (1949), Cinderella (1950), Alice in Wonderland (1951), Peter Pan (1953), Lady and the Tramp (1955), Sleeping Beauty (1959), One Hundred and One Dalmatians (1961), The Sword in the Stone (1963), The Jungle Book (1967), The Aristocats (1970), Robin Hood (1973), The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh (1977), The Rescuers (1977), The Fox and the Hound (1981), The Secret of NIMH (1982), The Black Cauldron (1985), The Great Mouse Detective (1986), Oliver & Company (1988), All Dogs Go to Heaven (1989), The Little Mermaid (1989), The Rescuers Down Under (1990), Rock-a-doodle (1991), Beauty and the Beast (1991), Aladdin (1992), The Lion King (1994), Pocahontas (1995), The Hunchback of Notre Dame (1996), Hercules (1997), Mulan (1998), Tarzan (1999), Fantasia 2000 (1999), Dinosaur (2000), The Emperor's New Groove (2000), Atlantis: The Lost Empire (2001), Lilo & Stitch (2002), Treasure Planet (2002), Brother Bear (2003),Home on the Range (2004), Chicken Little (2005), Meet the Robinsons (2007), Bolt (2008), The Princess and the Frog (2009), Tangled (2010), Winnie the Pooh (2011), Wreck it Ralph (2012), Frozen (2013), Big Hero Six (2014), Zootopia (2016), Moana (2016), Ralph Breaks the Internet (2018), Frozen II (2019), Raya and the Last Dragon (2021), Encanto (2021), Strange World (2022)

In this episode of Casual Chats, Patricia and special guest Chris "RowdyC" Moore discuss about the animated Disney films from 1943 to 1949 consisting of Saludos Amigos, The Three Caballeros, Make Mine Music, Fun and Fancy Free, Melody Time, and Ichabod and Mr. Toad in honor of Saludos Amigos' 80th anniversary. These slew of films are known as The Wartime Era since they came out during World War II when the European market was very low. In addition, the Walt Disney Animation Studio was going through a strike to unionize their workers with better pay and benefits. Many Disney fans consider this era one of, if not, the worst of the Disney eras. What did Patricia and Chris think of the films? What is the most controversial movie of all time? It might be some of the films we've already talked about but Walt Disney's post Civil War live action/animation hybrid Song of the South is definitely part of the conversation. It hasn't been released theatrically in the states since 1986, before some of us were born. Does it deserve to remain in the Disney Vault like images from Fantasia, The Rescuers and Who Framed Roger Rabbit? Or should it be widely available for the public to decide?Tune in as Mike and Trevor discuss the problematic nature of Joel Chandler Harris' tales of the south, Walt Disney's history with and surrounding the film and how it led to one of Disneyland's most beloved attractions.Warning!! The following episode involves several serious and ugly topics including slavery and racism. If you're looking for a more whimsical Disney review, unfortunately you'll have to look somewhere else.

Mary Blair was a fine artist, commercial artist, concept artist, and Disney Imagineer. After graduating from Chouinard and marrying Lee Blair, Mary was set to build a career as a regionalist watercolor painter like her husband. Due to World War 2, fine art was not working out, and the two entered the world of commercial art and animation. Both landed positions at Ub Iwerks Studio. In 1940, Blair joined Walt Disney studios as a sketch artist. The job frustrated her, and she quit shortly after. A few months later, Walt Disney animators went on strike in 1941, right when Walt left on a Goodwill tour of South America. Lee Blair was invited to go with a group of Disney artists. Mary desperately wanted to go, so she convinced Walt to bring her. The South American tour was where Mary Blair flourished as an artist and developed the style we know of today. Walt supported and encouraged her work and involved her in a number of projects back at the studios. Blair was the art director on the films Three Caballeros and Saludos Amigos, and concept artist for Cinderella, Alice in Wonderland, and Peter Pan. Blair left the Disney studios and moved to New York to pursue freelance commercial art. She illustrated for Little Golden Books, did set designs for Radio City Music Hall, and designed ads for Bakers Cocoa and Pall Mall. Mary returned to Disney for her biggest project yet: creating the look for a new Disneyland attraction called “It's a Small World.” Mary Blair's modern style had a huge impact on the way Disney created their films and her influence at Disney can be seen to this day. Saludos Amigos! - Immer her damit! Folgt uns auf Twitter: @DDCCaballeros #ddCC
The fantastically boring compilation musicals begin - so here, Fox and Talen compact together two half-movies into one episode. This time it's a pair of love letters to Latin America in terms of music and song and creeping on women!
Following on from the Golden Age, Mike joins Rhys once again in a look back through Disney's animated past. This week we delve into the package films, a strange collection of money-saving projects and propaganda. This includes Saludos Amigos, The Three Caballeros, Melody Time, Fun & Fancy Free, Make Mine Music and The Adventures of Ichabod & Mr Toad. Theme by Spike Capper. Edited by Rhys Lloyd.

In today's episode, we tackle two short, related films. One of which is a heartfelt and inspired look at Latin America and the other is about Donald Duck trying to get a human mate. It was a weird 70 minutes, guys.If you enjoy our podcast, please rate us and leave us a review! You can also learn more or contact the show at vaultdisneypodcast.home.blog!

"Before They Were Live" chats about "Saludos Amigos," the sixth Disney animated feature.
[School of Movies 2015] The Disney specials continue with parts 6-11 covering the period between 1942 and 1949 when, due to World War II the studio held off on major animated features and instead focused on cheaply produced package films designed to foster relations with South America and keep their struggling animation house afloat. It's an odd bunch, comprising Saludos Amigos, The Three Cabelleros, Make Mine Music, Fun and Fancy Free, Melody Time and The Adventures of Ichabod & Mr Toad. Virtually none of these are remembered or cherished and on listening to this episode you'll understand why. Daniel Floyd shoulders the majority of the appraisal this time. Next episode, Disney goes all-in as they put all of their money and resources into seeing if the world wants another story of a fairy-tale princess.
