This week's EYE ON NPI is another onsemi device - this week we're looking at the NIV3071 4-Channel eFuse Solution (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/o/on-semi/niv3071-4-channel-efuse-solution) a power distribution manager that can lets you manage a product with a lot of power domains and supplies using just a couple GPIO pins. This week's product is an upgrade from the covered-earlier NIS5420 (https://blog.adafruit.com/2021/09/09/eye-on-npi-onsemi-efuse-porfolio-eyeonnpi-digikey-onsemi-digikey-adafruit/) - with a higher 8~60V input range, and 4 independently-controlled channels. When people first meet fuses, they usually see and think of classic 'wire' fuses (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/bel-fuse-inc/5ST-200-R/1009012) with ceramic or glass or thermoplastic bodies, and a thin wire inside. When too much current goes through the fuse wire, it gets hotter and hotter and eventually melts, cutting off the load from the source voltage. These kinds of fuses are super cheap, very-very-low resistance, easy to find at any hardware store, and there's lots of suppliers with various current limits. However, they're one-shot usage only and only good for over-current, can't act as switches/sequencers. You need to have a way for customers to access the fuse in order to replace it. For those reasons, a lot of engineers prefer going with 'poly fuses' - fuses that are easy to mount into a circuit that auto-reset after a time (usually minutes) so that a temporary overload doesn't make the device a brick so quickly. For example, we have a chunky 24V 5A hold / 10 A trip polyfuse (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/littelfuse-inc/2016L260-24MR/6347052) on the Sparkle Motion board design (https://www.adafruit.com/product/6100), designed to protect folks who accidentally have a short in the output LED strings, and want to avoid damaging the power supply or main board. Poly-fuses are a great step-up from plain wire fuses: they're fairly inexpensive, available from lots of suppliers with various current limits, and best of all the fuse auto-resets after cooling down. However, like wire fuses, they're good for over-current, can't be reset, and have some variation depending on ambient temperature: you may trip 50% higher if its cold, or lower if its hot. Thus the next generation of fuses: eFuses (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/o/on-semi/efuse-automotive-circuit-protection)! As you could imagine, these are pure-silicon fuses, with a chunky N-FET that acts as the cut-off switch, and current limiting managed as an analog feedback loop that will cut the FET when too high. We get the resetability of a polyfuse, with additional control like sequence-able enable pins and under-voltage lockout. Note that some eFuses also can do over-voltage clamps and negative voltage protection, but the NIV3071 (https://www.digikey.com/short/3v0thr1p) doesn't contain these protections, so you may want to implement those protections separately. Especially designed for automotive power systems, which tend to be 12V/24V/36V/48V multiples, the NIV3071 (https://www.digikey.com/short/3v0thr1p) is AEC−Q100 qualified and PPAP capable (https://www.onsemi.com/pub/collateral/tnd6284-d.pdf). The use of eFuses is becoming popular as cars have become more computerized and electrified, with each 'zone' in a car (https://www.onsemi.com/solutions/automotive/zonal-architecture) - such as entertainment, communication, lighting, charging and sensors - all needing separate power management. If you don't need automotive qualifications, the functionally-compatible NIS3071 (https://www.digikey.com/short/9v2dmvhf) is a couple of cents cheaper. This family of eFuses is good for up to 60V and 2.5A per channel, but if you need more per channel you can just double or triple them up to add 2.5A per. If you want less per channel, to protect low-power devices from overheating or accidental shorts, the current limit can be reduced with an external resistor. And of course, you can turn on/off each channel with a GPIO enable pin: great for sequencing your power chain to reduce stress on the power supply from inrush current, or to allow each section to stabilize and go through self-test. For your next power supply design, the onsemi NIV3071 (https://www.digikey.com/short/3v0thr1p) and NIS3071 (https://www.digikey.com/short/9v2dmvhf) offer high-voltage, high-current control in a small package and a great price. Both are in stock right now at DigiKey for immediate shipment, so you can book today and start integration by tomorrow afternoon.

Full tutorial: https://learn.adafruit.com/butterfly-bench-with-edge-lit-acrylic/overview Build a bench for your backyard or your festival theme camp that shows your logo or camp mascot in glowing rainbow colors. Playa Tech is a system of furniture plans designed by Sunshine Zwern. Create benches, tables and chairs from a single sheet of plywood using common wood shop tools. The furniture packs flat, then slots together in minutes, allowing you to bring an entire living room set for your festival camp in the back of your Subaru. This system is rapidly gaining popularity with the Burning Man crowd, and we've seen it being used at festivals nationwide. Our camp decided to get a bit fancy this year and worked together to create this Playa Tech Butterfly Bench. The butterfly is cut with a handheld CNC router from a sheet of 3/4" plywood, and then back-lit with edge-lit 1/4" acrylic, 30/m NeoPixels and running WLED software powered by a Sparkle Motion board. It's a lovely addition to our camp setup, and makes an absolutely lovely "selfie spot" in any garden. The LED build is pretty easy on this project. The challenge is in the woodworking. Over the holiday break, we designed a few Sparkle Motion (https://www.adafruit.com/search?q=sparkle+motion) ESP32 boards for use with WLED. They've been working well, so we decided to finish up the third version we cooked up—a USB “stick” for quick builds that you can power from a wall adapter, computer, or even a USB battery pack for portability. We managed to fit in a fuse, an I²S microphone, infrared-remote input, a mode-select button, two level-shifted outputs, and terminal blocks. It's designed to fit inside a pre-made snap-fit case (https://www.adafruit.com/product/6176). Full tutorial: https://learn.adafruit.com/lighting-led-nets-with-wled-and-xlights/overview Add hundreds of lights to your home or yard with these fantastic Seed Pixel Nets. Adafruit carries them in a variety of sizes, from 1x1m to 1x6m large, and they are chainable and expandable so no vision is too big. These nets use 12v power, which can be easily handled by the Sparkle Motion microcontroller. It has 4 powered LED outputs, a power converter so you can run 12v or 5v lights, and an onboard microphone, which makes sound-reactive projects a snap. The setup is fairly easy, with no soldering required (though adding connectors can make your life easier). That gives you time to focus on making beautiful sequences and enjoying your pretty lights. We're doing the audio-reactive test with the built-in I2S microphone this time. This digital mic will give great audio quality without needing any extra work. If you want an external mic wired far away, there are GPIOs exposed that you can solder to for another I2S connection - ESP32 lets you use any pins, which is nice! this demo is a graphical equalizer that makes verification easy! We're rounding the corner with testing our Sparkle Motion (https://www.adafruit.com/product/6100) WLED-compatible board. This time, we're doing the fuse test. we got a lot of requests to include a 5A fuse onboard. Of course, we need to verify that it works as expected. With a chonky 12V 25A power supply and my trusty electronic load, we dial up one amp at a time... note that all PTC fuses have a 'hold' of 5A and a higher trip current of ~2x that, so we actually open at 10A. Once it heats up a bit, that trip current can drop a bit, but it will always be over 5A and under 10A. Good test equipment makes this job nice and easy. The board is complete - time to book it up, just in time for the New Year. This chonky neopixel tube is a treat with full, smooth color all the way around - but it's also a real pain to drive, given it requires 24V power. Or at least it would be if we didn't have this Sparkle Motion (https://www.adafruit.com/product/6100) board we are testing! With USB PD support, it's easy to plug the board into a USB C laptop power supply that can provide 20V at up to 5A - even though it's under 24V, we've found the LEDs are just as bright. Looks great, we're going to keep testing and get these boards ordered, hopefully before the year's end! Playing with our new Sparkle Motion board that's coming soon (https://www.adafruit.com/product/6100) we wanted to try driving a large display of LEDs and discovered that once you want to do custom display graphics, WLED is not super great. Instead, you can use the open source and free xLights software (https://xlights.org/) which is completely amazing and has a learning curve like a cliff for the first 30 minutes. BUT once you get your controller and layout, it's unbelievably powerful and actually kinda easy to get going with simple display work. It also has a very satisfying preview mode. #wled #led #neopixel Visit the Adafruit shop online - http://www.adafruit.com ----------------------------------------- LIVE CHAT IS HERE! http://adafru.it/discord Subscribe to Adafruit on YouTube: http://adafru.it/subscribe New tutorials on the Adafruit Learning System: http://learn.adafruit.com/ -----------------------------------------

We got our WLED-friend PCBs (https://blog.adafruit.com/2024/12/02/leftovers-layout-wled-board-revision-a-completed/) and are testing it with various LED grids. First, we tried out a 16x16 NeoPixel grid that runs on 5V. Since that worked well, we're now onto a much bigger 60 x 60 grid - that's 3,600 LEDs! These are some NeoPixel pebble (https://www.adafruit.com/product/6024) netting samples we're also testing at the same time; each one has 20 x 60 pixels and uses 12V power, so it's a good test of the DC pass-through for higher voltages. Since WLED has a limit of 2000 pixels per output, this demo uses the three output ports that are then 'merged' together in memory to make a single large grid. We have more to test soon: the onboard IR receiver, USB PD, I2S microphone, extra I/O pins, and I2C, so watch for those videos as they come together. We got our WLED-friend PCBs today, and we only made one mistake: the wrong resistor on the 3.3V feedback line. Now that it's fixed, the board seems to work great with the latest version of WLED (https://kno.wled.ge/basics/tutorials/)! we are checking all 4 signal outputs with this handy 256-LED grid that sits on our desk. Next, we will test the onboard IR receiver, USB PD, I2S microphone, extra I/O pins, and I2C. We'll also do an Arduino IDE board definition in case folks want to use it as a generic ESP32-to-LED-driver board. We're calling the board "Sparkle Motion" for now, but if you have other naming ideas, let us know - if we pick your name, you get a free board (https://www.adafruit.com/product/6100). Beth Grant is one hell of a character actor. You know, the lady you love to hate. She came into our lives doubting our committment to Sparkle Motion and captured our hearts getting sucked under a bus in Speed. Where is East Carolina? What does Civil Rights activism have to do with a prolific acting career? What's up with her husband's look? All this, plus a short review of Beth Grant's directorial debut, on Danny's new show.
ACOFAE Podcast Presents: Donnie Darko: "Have you ever seen a portal?" Being a teenager is hard enough. Throw in a 6ft tall bunny rabbit and the world ending...and being a teenager is very hard. Add in time travel, portals, and god?! and you've got some problems to deal with. Donnie is going through a lot. When a jet engine falls through his room things really kick off into left field when the bunny begins to talk and Patrick Swayze beings to teach. Drew Barrymore and Noah Wyle join a delightful cast that only glitters more with Sparkle Motion and intense English class chaos. Seth joins forces with Erica to discuss Ti West's latest addition to the Maxine Minx story: Maxxxine! Mia Goth has a lot of drugs inside of a duck, Kevin Bacon wears Nicholson, Ti West and Josh Schwartz pay homage to the SAME classic Hollywood actress, Buster Keaton has never been more evil and Seth screams at the screen like, 5 times. Maybe more. Hard to say. Wake up, Drewbies. It's Halloween and we've got some ear candy to drop into your trick-or-treating bag as we cover one of our all time favorite movies, 2001's Donnie Darko! Not only does this film take place in October, but it was also released in the spookiest month 22 years ago. We get into how Drew Barrymore, Nancy Juvonen, and Flower Films became the unofficial godmothers for the project, bringing you all sorts of behind the scene tidbits. You won't believe how many pieces of the film were only included thanks to the power of a phone call from Drew! We also discuss deleted scenes, our favorite lines from the film (of which there are many!), plus our personal story of attending the Director's Cut premiere in 2004. We hope you enjoy this episode as much as we do and no longer doubt our commitment to Sparkle Motion! Visit us on the web! @howdoyoudrewpod / howdoyoudrew.com @drewseum / thedrewseum.com

In precisely 28 days, 6 hours, 42 minutes and 12 seconds, the world will end. Or this podcast episode will be 28 days old. One of the two. I'm covering DONNIE DARKO today on Soundtracker, and I'm joined by returning guest Bobby Big Wheel (@bobbybigwheel) to talk about it. In this episode, we talk about the movie's strange up and down (and back up again) legacy, Kelly's fully formed vision as a first time filmmaker, how certain aspects seem as timely as ever in 2023, how creepy Frank looks, how the Angsty Young Guy philosophizing is fine, actually, the incredible juggling act it does with genres, we discuss the possibility it's a superhero origin story, and get into how well the musical choices paint the era the movie takes place in. So give it a listen. If you don't, I'll begin to doubt your commitment to Sparkle Motion! Support the show on Patreon! Just when you thought you were done with Halloween, they pull you right back in. Put on your bunny masks, our podders watched Donnie Darko. So throw on your Sparkle Motion sweatshirt, learn some fun new ways to curse, and get ready for a long drawn out convo on time travel just like your college boyfriend used to have at like 3:00 AM. (Come on Chaz, some of us have class in the morning!) Also, let's figure out the wrong way to pronounce Jenna Malone's name. Spoiler it rhymes with Balogna.
28 days, 6 hours, 42 minutes, 12 seconds - that is when the world will end. Donnie (Jake Gyllenhaal) is a boy going through it; he's dealing with bullies, grades, therapy, and visions of a time traveling bunny named Frank (James Duval) all while trying to meet the new girl in school (Jena Malone). Together they unravel a series of events that ends with the arrest of sleazy local conman and pervert Jim Cunningham (Patrick Swayze) but will anyone remember once the engine drops? Jordan and Alex explore the creation of everyone's favorite coming-of-age psycho-horror New Wave time-travel flick — with rabbits. Listen to learn all the ways rookie director Richard Kelly beat the hellish odds to make his incredibly ambitious feature film debut, why Jason Schwartzman was very nearly the title character, and how this movie quite literally couldn't have happened without Drew Barrymore, the true MVP of the production. You'll also find out what song was supposed to be used for the Sparkle Motion dance sequence, why Gary Jules' haunting “Mad World” cover was a last-minute addition, and why Donnie Darko is real-life neighbors with Ferris Bueller. Plus, the TMI Boys make a valiant effort to parse apart the many theories about the true meaning of this unexplainable movie.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

The guys discuss Richard Kelly's first film – the cult classic Donnie Darko, staring Jake Gyllenhaal, Jena Malone, Drew Barrymore, and the late Patrick Swayze. Along the way, they debate the merits of ambiguity vs. a full explanation, Dave almost learns to pronounce “Cannes,” and everybody marvels at the fantastic hallway shot set to “Head Over Heels.” Everybody loves the soundtrack and thinks the Frank the Bunny costume is downright creepy. By the end of the episode it's clear that everybody remains strongly committed to Sparkle Motion. #donniedarko #cultmovie #frankthebunny #sparklemotion

Find your low-rise jeans and come with us on a journey through time, to the epicenter of our youth: the early aughts. Candace and Ariel are talking to filmmaker LaShaunte Wade about two movies in our mental horror scrapbooks: Louisiana Gothic of menacing Spanish moss The Skeleton Key (2005), and mind-freak Millennial anthem Donnie Darko (2001). We also talk scary grandmas, problematic jump scares, the mean streak in early 2000's culture, thrifting tips, Ariel's Gary Jules obsession, the sounds of Are You Afraid of the Dark, and The Cheeseburger Phone movie - you know the one. Also is Donnie Darko a Halloween romcom? Listen to find out. Trust us, we would never doubt your commitment to Sparkle Motion. In that weird liminal space between Christmas and New Year's where none of us have any clue what day or time it is, it only seems right that we journey 20 years into the past for sleeper cult hit Donnie Darko, then it's second right at 1988 and straight on til morning. Or is it? Our guest for this episode is Christine Bohan who joins us in our quest to unravel this time-traveling modern classic as she visits Middlesex High School for the first time. Topics covered include angsty adolescences both onscreen and off, family dynamics, lockdown hobbies, rogue teaching methods, breakthrough performances in a stacked cast for the ages and a late-save apology to all the Swifties out there. It's not too late, burst through that cellar door, hop the wormhole, choose fear or love. Just don't ever doubt our commitment to Sparkle Motion. Wake up, Donnie. Sparkle Motion superfans Mark and O'tilia Garcia time travel to 2001 (or really to 1988) to discuss the awesome head scratcher Donnie Darko for its 20th anniversary this month. We probably don't make any sense and are getting things wrong, but we both love this trippy ride into another dimension. It's kinda like Sliding Doors, only much more fun (sorry Gwyneth). Long live, Roberta Sparrow!
"Donnie Darko. What the hell kind of name is that? It's like some sort of superhero or something." We watched Donnie Darko with MTMUG Superstar Michael Morgan and we have serious doubts about your commitment to Sparkle Motion! It's our first Jake Gyllenhaal review and this movie does not disappoint. Remember when the gays would constantly claim Jake as one of our own? We just couldn't resist that doe-eyed stare. Donnie Darko really put Jake on the mainstream radar. First of all can we talk about this cast? Drew Barrymore's Flower Films production company went to bat to get this movie made and and Drew herself plays Donnie's too-cool English teacher. America's hipster girlfriend and Jakes real-life sister Maggie Gyllenhaal, absolute icon Patrick Swayze and the Legendary Beth Grant, to name a few, round out this stellar ensemble. Is there really an answer to what this movie is actually about? Maybe not - but we try to get to the bottom of it. We'll leave you with this... Cellar Door. Wait, hang on, another movie about a giant rabbit? Only this time the rabbit doesn't drink booze and pal around with Jimmy Stewart, but leads a teenager with mental problems down the path of scientific discovery and time travel? Well, yeah! Donnie Darko has been analyzed half to death and that's impressive considering how indifferently the picture was received 20 years ago. Richard Kelly was only 26 back then and he was making his first (and certainly best) feature film. It's far from perfect, although it has a slew of incredible moments and a dynamite soundtrack. Jake Gyllenhaal sports a solid Kubrick glower and he showed us many glimpses of how good an actor he was going to become. The whole eclectic cast is up to the task, really, and what a trippy movie they're in. Okay, but, what about that plot? We give that question a shot! So stay in your comfy bed, but don't doubt our commitment to Sparkle Motion as the 397th Ellises' Analysis rips into the story of Donnie D. This week, the boys begin a brand new journey with some distance from previous miniseries...we are beginning a journey through the minds of Richards. As two individuals that began their true film obsessions with this film bro staple, Jack and Alex are discussing 2001's DONNIE DARKO, directed by Richard Kelly and starring a number of familiar faces, fronted by of course, Jake Gyllenhaal. Listen for some honest discussion of a movie that means a lot to both hosts but is out of its prime, and listen even further for Jack's insane read on this movie. Check it out!Intro music is by Alex Brinkman
Join us in the Tangent Universe this week as we, heads up our butts, discuss the intricacies, successes, and failings of Richard Kelly's cult classic. As Blake's pick this week we wonder why he liked a movie so closely associated with time travel and multiple universes, and he wonders that too. But through the power of Sparkle Motion, we press on.
There is no nice way to say it: this is the grumpiest Duck has been on the pod, ever, so sorry. Kevin, luckily, steers the ship of state with aplomb and the boys welcom Luke Allen Wylde of Statera Cellers and Lares Wines to discuss bubble techniques, technical winemaking, and how shitty it must be to have losers drink your wines. What makes a cult classic? For director Richard Kelly's "Donnie Darko," starring a young Jake Gyllenhaal, it's its seamless mix of horror, comedy, sci-fi, philosophy, '80s pop music, religious subtext and an unwavering committment to Sparkle Motion. But how does all that ambition hold up on rewatch? In this episode, Mike and Brian dive into the movie's best moments, talk trivia and debate the place of "Donnie Darko" among the Best Picture nominees of 2001. www.bestpicturethis.com PATREON: https://tinyurl.com/r4thbbxz TWITTER: https://tinyurl.com/jkfucw8f FACEBOOK: https://tinyurl.com/58caezcd Email: BestPictureThis@gmail.com

28 days. 6 hours. 42 minutes. 12 seconds. That is when the world will end… according to Frank, the giant bunny rabbit. Closing out a run of spooky Halloween-themed episodes is the 2001 indie classic Donnie Darko. Is this film a muddled mess or an of-the-moment masterpiece? What can we make of the three seemingly conflicting threads that run through the movie—the science fiction, the vaguely religious, and the meditation on upper middle class suburban alienation? Do these thematic strings clash horribly, or are they inextricably intertwined? How do we make sense of an increasingly mad world through the eyes of Donnie? We meditate on the film’s carefully selected symbols and philosophical underpinnings to answer these questions and more. — Black Lives Matter. Tread Perilously begins a month of haunting television with the Angel episode called "Rm w/a Vu." When Cordelia's apartment gets overrun with roaches and Doyle's debts in the favor-based economy catch up with him, Angel offers to help the demon if he can find Cordy a new place to live. As it happens, Doyle knows a guy and she moves into a fab one-bedroom in the Hollywood Hills. It's rent-controlled, too, but it does have one little catch: the ghost of the building's original owner and her hatred of any woman who would come near her son, Dennis. Will Angel and Doyle figure out a way to exorcise the ghost or will Cordy figure out a way to deal with her apartment's quirk? The haunting at Tread Perilously starts early as Justin and Erik have to re-record the first 20 minutes of the podcast. Doyle's plot drives them both batty as well. Other elements of Angel's early reality create issues for Justin. Erik declares "socially-awkward Angel" as his favorite take on the character. The probability of an exorcist setting up shop in Koreatown leads to one of the better Geography Corner segments. Erik respects actor Beth Grant's commitment to Sparkle Motion and Tommy Wiseau somehow ends up mattering to the proceedings.
"You're underestimating the power of Sparkle Motion to keep that airplane flying."If I could go back in time I'd re-record that embarrassing segment of this podcast where I ignorantly and blatantly mixed up the titles of In Time and About Time for a solid ten minutes. “Sometimes I doubt your commitment to Sparkle Motion!” [This episode contains the brief sound of gun shots at 1:36] Sandy and educator, technologist and activist Jonah Bossewitch ring in spooky season with a discussion of the cult classic film Donnie Darko. They talk about the portrayal of psychiatry (which includes hypnosis for some reason?) and whether all the movie's talk of time travel could be seen as a meditation on suicide.SANDY’S NOTES:
Dave, Justin, and Paul celebrate another group of amazing CHARACTER ACTRESSES in part 4 of their ongoing series. Join them as they discuss the films of Meg Foster, Jennifer Tilly Famke Jannsen, Selma Blair, Veronica Cartwright, and many more!

Even with a poor showing in the box office, Donnie was not to be held back, and the movie received critical acclaim and a cult following. After Colin and Paul view the theatrical cut and Jon taking in the Director's cut, listen to see if Donnie Darko holds up, or if the guys doubt their commitment to Sparkle Motion.

This week, we test our commitment to Sparkle Motion with Jon Espino of The Young Folks and HollywoodChicago.com as we revisit Richard Kelly's 2001 cult time travel teen drama Donnie Darko! The hit of the Hot Topic crowd in the early 2000s, for better or worse, we go back to this twisty, navel-gazing mixture of American Beauty and The Butterfly Effect to see if its profundities still hold up.
