We're tackling religious upbringing this week with Laurel Parmet's THE STARLING GIRL (2023), a phenomenal film about a teenage girl's coming-of-age in her Christian fundamentalist community—and we're having necessary conversations about modesty culture (and the violence it inflicts), predatory relationships, and the work of protecting each other whilst living within systems that thrive precisely by not protecting our livelihoods. Sarah and Kevin explore a dystopian sci-fi story in the form of Landscape with Invisible Hand, the latest movie from Cory Finley adapted from an M.T. Anderson novel of the same name, about a pair of teens who live under a vaguely benevolent alien occupation that's drained the planet of its jobs and resources. For the Watchlist, Sarah and Kevin talk about another story that has to do with finding love in a hopeless economy: Charlie Chaplin's 1936 film Modern Times. Laurel Parmet's astute feature narrative debut, THE STARLING GIRL zeroes in on the life of seventeen-year-old Jem Starling as she struggles to define her place within her fundamentalist Christian community of rural Kentucky. Even her greatest joy of dancing with the church group is tempered by worry that her actions are sinful and she is caught between a burgeoning awareness of her own sexuality and her religious devotion. With the return of Owen, an enigmatic youth pastor, Jem soon finds herself attracted to his worldliness and charm. Slowly, he draws her into a dangerous relationship that could upend their entire community. THE STARLING GIRL centers on Jem's agency as Scanlen and a gruffly charismatic Lewis Pullman generate a palpable chemistry, even as the film steadily reaffirms Jem's youthful naivete and Owen's position of authority. Writer-director Laurel Parmet delicately balances the intoxication and inappropriateness of the pair's transgressive connection in this morally complex, sensitive coming-of-age story. A stellar Eliza Scanlen beautifully conveys the impetuous, conflicted Jem's tentative journey toward understanding her growingly complicated ideas about herself, her family, and the faith that has always guided her life. Welcome to Midday at the Movies, our monthly look at films and filmmaking. We're pleased to have two movie mavens join us again. Ann Hornaday is film critic for the Washington Post, Jed Dietz, the founder and former director of the Maryland Film Festival and Parkway Theater. We discuss the latest movies out in theatres, including You Hurt My Feelings, Master Gardener, Beau Is Afraid and Reality. We also reflect on the 15th anniversary of Iron Man. As Ann Hornaday writes in the Washington Post, the film had an artistic, authentic vision which would eventually lead superhero movies into a new era of corporate, milquetoast blockbusters. Plus, the latest on the writers' strike in Hollywood. Could directors be the next to join the picket line? (Photo courtesy of Magnolia Pictures)See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

A new film tells the story of a 17-year-old girl who becomes entranced by the new youth pastor at her Christian fundamentalist church. Erik Childress and Steve Prokopy once again experienced this year's Sundance from the comfort of their domiciles, but that in no way affected their viewing numbers. In just a sampling of what they saw, they discuss over 25 films including documentaries about Michael J. Fox, Brooke Shields, freediving, our evolvement with the camera and the strange saga of a bootleg video store. They talk about some of their favorite midnight selections along with divisive tales of dating, bodybuilding and workplace relationships all featuring the festival's theme of the year – man babies. Gael Garcia Bernal inspires as a luchador while David Strathairn and Jane Levy put next year's award ballots on notice. Searchlight Pictures has a great new romcom coming to Hulu and bought a hilarious mockumentary from Molly Gordon, Nick Lieberman and Ben Platt. All that plus new films from Brandon Cronenberg and Nicole Holofcener are at the center of a pretty solid festival with titles you should take note of now. 0:00 - Intro 5:18 – Kim's Video 14:09 – Fantastic Machine 17:38 – The Deepest Breath 26:15 – Birth/Rebirth 33:41 – Talk To Me 39:50 – Cat Person 45:31 – Fair Play 54:14 – Still: A Michael J.
