The show notes for this episode feature images of all the ants we talk about: https://curiositycake.co.uk/ants ***SUBSCRIBE***RATE***REVIEW*** https://linktr.ee/curiositycake As a graduate student at the Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth College, under the mentorship of Dr. Giovanni Bosco, Balint's primary studies were on learning, memory, aging, and social behavior in Drosophila melanogaster (the fruit fly). He developed novel behavioral paradigms accounting for the natural life history of the fly. This led to identification of new behaviors in addition to dissection of the associated underlying physiological, genetic, and neurological change. Additionally, he was involved in a cancer study, where he participated in characterizing a new drug in a patient derived tumor. Currently, Balint is the Rebecca Ridley Kry Fellow of the Damon Runyon Cancer Research Foundation in the lab of Dr. Shelley Berger at the University of Pennsylvania. His long-term goal is to answer the questions above using the more fluid reproductive plasticity present in ponerine ants such as Harpegnathos saltator, which he is using to study the epigenetic effects of caste identity as a function of social environments. He is also utilizing Camponotus floridanus as a model to study the effect of social interaction on epigenetics, lifespan, and physiology. And finally he is studying Atta cephalotes as a model to dissect epigenetic regulation of caste determination and behavior in an advanced social system.

This has been a very tough struggle for me, so I want to share everything I’ve learned to overcome it. I believe God wants to be involved in every detail of our lives, so here’s His word to stand strong and confident on: I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will counsel you with my eye upon you. – Psalm 32:8  Let’s just all agree that weight loss is not simply one calorie in one calorie out. Calories do matter, the food that’s making up your calories matters a lot, but hormones matter more! Our hormones are driving the weight loss process! Especially as you get into perimenopause and menopause.  Our world just thinks of weight loss as diet and workout, but the emotional, mental, social, and spiritual factors may be even more important. Consider this...A daily battle with the bathroom scale can cause shame, judgment, suffering, and obsession with weight—making it harder and harder to lose weight. And stress brought on by extreme diets and extreme exercise can undermine them entirely—and actually cause weight gain.  Here’s the thing I’ve lived and learned. There are things we can do and we need to give lifestyle modifications an honest go. When I was first searching for answers on how to get healthy, I began researching our manual for life, the Bible.  I noticed that Jesus got up early. He got alone and prayed. He walked everywhere. He put time with His father first. Following His example, I personally found lasting results, and then created an entire program that has helped transform 1000s of women’s lives. These women don’t just lose weight, they find confidence, pursue goals, and live free of the dieting rollercoaster. I wanted to share how to do this with you, so I created a simple system called The 5 W’s. The 5 W’s are a new and easy tool that will help you create small faith wins all day long. 5 W’s: Word, Water, Workout, Whole, God-made foods, Worship  (Get started now! Download your free 5 W’s weekly template and bonus prayer.) Aim to create a daily win with each W. Throughout the day, check-in with yourself and say, Did I get in the Word? Did I drink enough Water? Did I Workout? Did I eat Whole, God made foods? Did I spend time in Worship? Rather than getting caught up in gimmicks and the overwhelm of the way the world does fitness, I wanted to give you something simple to follow. These aren’t hard and fast rules, and there’s no perfect way expected, but rather a way to do your best every day in His strength. If you get these in, you will feel, look, and be a completely new woman. Did you know that 90% of successful people have a morning routine? Think of Jesus and His routine.   -> Consider creating your routine based around these 5 W’s.   You could wake up early, get in the word, workout, worship God, and prepare whole God-made meals and snacks for the day. And, by simply choosing water over man-made processed high sugar beverages, you would lose weight. I have to share that getting alone with God first thing in the morning sets the tone for the day, and it starts your day right. We need to connect to our power source, and in Him, we can power through our days in confident hope.  We won’t experience this if we’re not with Him. When we have our priorities right, everything else falls into place. We need our faith to take care of ourselves inside and out.  God’s word must always fill our minds and direct our steps. I’m going to pray that we move away from the complicated worlds’ way of doing fitness and that we find simplicity in Christ’s example. Faith Fuel:  Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me. Psalm 51:10 I pray that scripture every morning. Oh so good! Are there places in your life where you could really use the Lord's help? Doing this exercise will show you exactly where God wants to do the work with you that will level up your life:  Step 1. Think of your life as your home and each part of you is a room. Let’s walk through the house together, and as we do, ask yourself if God has been pointing anything out in this room. Kitchen: Has he been talking to you about making better food choices, or are you struggling with disordered eating, overeating, undereating, or maybe even numbing yourself with food?  Office: Are you hearing anything about a business He’s put on your heart, your current job, trusting Him for a new job, or perhaps how you spend your money? Bathroom: When you look in the mirror, do you see what He sees, or do you struggle with getting dressed or your body image? Do you shame a part of your body? Do you show off a part of your body? Bedroom: Is God talking to you about your marriage or intimacy? Or even oversleeping or under sleeping? Kids' rooms:  Are you praying for a baby, or wanting to be a better role model for your kids, or maybe start teaching them more about God?  Living room: Think of tv/music/entertainment. Is there any entertainment that isn't in line with your Christian values? Dining room: Think about fellowship, who are you surrounding yourself with? Are there any toxic relationships that don’t fit who you are in Christ? Or are there any friends or family you should invite over? Lastly, Your Closet, Are there any deep secrets or broken places that you shove down every day: old hurts, guilt, anger from the loss of a loved one, failed marriages, or pain from rejection? These unspeakable painful places are where only Jesus can heal.  Step 2. identify if you are running from God or toward Him in this area of your life. If you are running to God, wonderful! But, if you're running from Him, you're not alone. Even Jonah ran from God, He was the only prophet who ran from Him. Our Faith Fuel: Isaiah 30:21 gives this biblical foundation: Your ears will hear a word behind you, “This is the way, walk in it,’ whenever you go to the right or to the left.”  God’s got you! Yes, He does!  I’m never going to leave you without asking you to get into action.  Nothing happens without action, and I’m here to be your accountability partner. Join My Power Up Challenge! Today’s show is one that will equip you with a truth many of us may not even be aware of, and stay tuned, because I created a Freebie for you. In my personal struggle to stay strong and fit: mind, body and soul, God showed me this: And it was a major aha moment! Did you know the weekend is almost a third of the year? Pause for a moment and think about this: Have you ever made the connection that weekends were a third of the year and could be sabotaging your fitness goals? I thought it was important to do a Strong. Confident. His. episode on this, because God wants His daughter’s wise.  He wants our eyes open to the traps of the enemy and the things that we don’t even see that are completely derailing us from our best. The weekend feels like a time to take completely off, but we can’t take our foot completely off the gas pedal and our hands off the wheel or we will end up in an unhealthy ditch! Who wants off this crazy train?! I sure did! And God saved me from it.  So, I’m determined to share everything I learned the hard way, and this sure was one of them. This concept of taking weekends completely off is why we start our diets over every Monday and we gain and lose the same weight every week and get nowhere. I’m hoping that this episode gets you thinking about your weekends, and how to approach them with a plan: so I made you a freebie, It’s called the Stay Fit Weekend Checklist, and I’ll link to it below. There are few things as hard as losing weight and reaching our fitness goals, so we want to make sure we’re not inadvertently sabotaging our best efforts. Psalm 119:105 says,  “Your word is light unto my path and a lamp unto my feet”  As we walk out our fitness through faith, we see from this scripture that God is with us. When we seek His word for answers, He’s there showing us the way.  God wants us empowered with knowledge, so make sure one of the following isn't keeping you from your goals. 1. You have a daily habit that has a grip on you 2. You think you can’t! 3. You’re not sleeping Did you know.. Sleeping an extra hour a night could help you drop 11 pounds in a year? Sleep controls your appetite:  The two hormones that help regulate hunger—ghrelin and leptin—are affected by sleep: Ghrelin stimulates appetite, while leptin decreases it.  Sweet friend, God wants us smart! He wants His daughters equipped.  Take the time to know the sneaky traps that are sabotaging your best efforts! Think about this… Scripture teaches us that at the core of every human heart there is a deep spiritual hunger and thirst for God.  When Jesus was tempted with hunger, He said, “It is written, “‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.’” Today as I go through these points think about: Discerning hunger from temptation and learning to know the difference. We can talk back to our temptations with scripture instead of listening to the lies they try to sell us. You are an overcomer friend! This message is needed.
