On this Quick News episode, we talk about the HUGE wins in the Senate runoffs in Georgia, where both Rev. Raphael Warnock and Jon Ossoff won. We also talk about the disgraceful actions of the Pennsylvania legislature, and the equally horrid decision made by Kenosha County District Attorney Michael Graveley in the Jacob Blake case. Coming tomorrow: comments on the domestic terrorism at the US Capitol today. Listen to Joe Biden's speech here: https://www.quicknewsdaily.com/e/president-biden-addresses-nation-capitol-building-takeover/ ----more----Rough Transcript:OPENToday is Wednesday, January 6th, and all I can say is: wow! It's really not an exaggeration to say that the world that we woke up to yesterday morning vs. the world that we woke up to this morning are two completely different worlds. Not only did one Democrat win in Georgia, but they ended up winning both Senate runoffs, giving Democrats control of the Senate (because it'll be 50 R's and 50 D's when these two are sworn in, and VP Kamala Harris will be there to break most of the ties for Democrats). I really never expected them to win, and it's incredible when you think about what this means going forward. Let's stop beating around the bush and get right into it. GEORGIAThe race has already been called for Raphael Warnock over current Senator Kelly Loeffler (aka QAnon Kelly aka KKKelly for her embrace of conspiracy theories and white supremacy). They haven't called the race for Ossoff yet (as of the time of this recording), even though most of the votes are absentee votes from heavily-Democratic counties. I get that they want to be careful, but at some point, being cautious turns into being stupid and ignoring the facts of the situation. So, I'll give you the quick Wikipedia facts about Georgia's new Senators (and I literally am just reading off of Wikipedia, it's not like this is any great reporting). In the 1990s, Warnock served as the youth pastor and then assistant pastor at Abyssinian Baptist Church in New York (sorry if I'm butchering that church name). While Warnock was there, the church declined to hire workfare recipients as part of organized opposition to then-mayor Rudy Giuliani's workfare program. In 2005, Warnock became senior pastor of the Ebenezer Baptist Church in Atlanta, Georgia, which is Martin Luther King Jr.'s former congregation. He is the fifth and the youngest person to serve as Ebenezer's senior pastor since its founding. This says that Warnock has stated that he will continue in the post while serving in the senate, although I'm not quite sure how that'll be possible.  In March 2014, Warnock led a sit-in at the Georgia State Capitol to press state legislators to accept the expansion of Medicaid offered by the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act. He and other leaders were arrested during the protest. From June 2017 to January 2020, Warnock chaired the "New Georgia Project", a nonpartisan organization focused on voter registration. In terms of his political positions, Warnock supports expanding the Affordable Care Act and has called for the passage of the John Lewis Voting Rights Act. He also supports increasing COVID-19-relief funding. A proponent of abortion rights and gay marriage, he has been endorsed by Planned Parenthood. He opposes the concealed carry of firearms, saying that religious leaders do not want guns in places of worship. Warnock has long opposed the death penalty, having advocated for death row inmate Troy Davis, who was executed in 2011 for killing a police officer despite evidence that supported his innocence. Warnock will be the first Black Democrat in history to represent a former Confederate state in the United States Senate, and the first Black senator from Georgia, period. That's not for lack of trying, it's just because that's literally how the system is designed in Georgia: so that Black citizens don't have any political power. In fact, the runoff process that Warnock just won was actually designed by a segregationist for the sole purpose of making sure that no African Americans could win. Georgia state representative Denmark Groover (by the way, what a helluva name that is. That sounds like a comic book character), a Democrat (from back when Democrats were the racist party in the South), came up with this system in 1963 because the thought was that if the race wasn't just between two people and there were other non-White candidates running against a Black candidate, then White voters would split their votes between the two White candidates, and the Black voters would all vote for their one candidate, so the Black candidate would win. In this runoff system, if nobody gets to 50% in the general election, there's a runoff between only two candidates. Groover thought that this would allow white voters to coalesce around their candidate, and that there would be more white voters than black voters. This whole thing makes Senator-elect Warnock's win so much sweeter. MAGA and Proud Boys started getting into fights with DC police after the race was called for Warnock, so apparently Blue Lives Don't Matter? As for Senator-elect Jon Ossoff, Ossoff worked as a national security staffer and aide to U.S. Representative Hank Johnson for five years.[14] He had top-secret clearance for five months.[15] He left Johnson's office in 2012 to earn a master's degree at the London School of Economics.[16] Before working for Johnson, he served as an intern for U.S. Representative and civil rights leader John Lewis, who recommended him to Johnson.[17][18]Since 2013, Ossoff has been managing director and chief executive officer of Insight TWI, a London-based investigative television production company that works with reporters to create documentaries about corruption in foreign countries.[19][20] The firm produced BBC investigations about ISIS war crimes and death squads in East Africa. He was also involved in producing a documentary about the staging of a play in Sierra Leone.[20] Loeffler is US Senator even though she never won more votes than anyone an election (appointed, didn't win in November, didn't win last night), just like Donald Trump didn't win the popular vote either of the times he was on the ballot. PENNSYLVANIAHere's one thing that Republicans have done that they should enjoy while they can: yesterday in Pennsylvania, Republicans in the state legislature refused to swear in a Democratic member who won reelection in November.GOP leaders forcefully seized control of the proceedings from Democratic Lt. Gov. John Fetterman after Fetterman tried to insist on seating Sen. Jim Brewster for a new term (you know, like the voters chose). The Republican majority voted to remove Fetterman from presiding over the session. The Department of State has confirmed that Brewster won another term by just 67 votes over Republican Nicole Ziccarelli. This came after the state confirmed that certain mail ballots where voters didn't mark the dates properly could still be counted.Ziccarelli has challenged the results in federal court, and her case is still pending with no deadline for action. She's asking for 311 mail ballots that arrived at election offices on time, but were missing handwritten dates, to be thrown out. That's it: they were missing dates. That sure doesn't sound like fraud to me. The state Supreme Court already ruled that ballots like these can be counted, but the problem is that the Senate district includes parts of two counties: Allegheny and Westmoreland. Allegheny County chose to count mail ballots without handwritten dates, but Westmoreland County did not. And here's the thing: I agree that this it's funky to count one county's but not the other's for the same Senate race, but if Ziccarelli and Republicans weren't afraid of voters, they'd be suing to count the ballots, not to have them thrown out. Republican leaders have said they intend to keep the seat empty while they "review" the election outcome. Senate President Pro Tempore Jake Corman called the situation "fairly unique, if not unprecedented." Yeah, because the people voted someone in, the courts affirmed that it was legal, but you and your cronies are still denying reality. That's what's unprecedented here. Corman didn't say how long Republicans plan to keep the seat empty.  JACOB BLAKEThe big story in my neck of the woods yesterday was the decision from Kenosha County District Attorney Michael Graveley to not charge any of the officers involved in the shooting of Jacob Blake. If you'll remember, Blake was shot 7 times in the back by Officer Rusten Sheskey.  DA Graveley is a Democrat, so a small part of me trusts him more than if a Republican had said this, but at the same time, he was squirming around so much during this announcement that you could tell he was making the wrong decision. Just go back and look at the body language. "It's absolutely incontrovertible that Jacob Blake was armed with a knife during this encounter. ... All the discussion that he's unarmed contradicts even what he himself has said multiple times." You know what's "incontrovertible" Graveley? The fact that all 7 shots went into Blake's back. Is it really self-defense when all 7 bullet holes are in the victim’s back?Nobody has killed someone while their own back was turned to them. Also, the officer said “he used deadly force...because he was afraid Blake, while attempting to flee the scene, was trying to kidnap a child in the back seat of the vehicle” Can someone explain to me how you knife someone while driving away? Is it now self-defense to shoot someone just because they have a knife/gun on the floor of their car? These people are basically arguing that you can just kill anyone as long as they happen to have some sort of weapon in their car. These 2nd amendment people will say it's okay Blake was shot, but they don't realize what that argument means. But they don't understand that because they're probably white and Blake wasn't, so they never have to face any consequences. Police gave (murderer) Kyle Rittenhouse water and said they appreciated his group helping them out. The police also shot Jacob Blake 7 times in the back. *Rittenhouse audio*Police aren’t afraid of weapons, they’re afraid of black people with weapons.Evers also announced Monday he is mobilizing 500 National Guard troops ahead of the decision at the request of local officials. Remember: this means it's easier for them to call in 500 troops and deal with "riots" than it is to simply charge 1 white dude with attempted murder.

As food distribution lines continue to grow by the week, communities across the country are working with their neighbors to support one another. Here in Newark, NJ – Clinton Hill is one of those neighborhoods. At the onset of the pandemic, while traditional food pantries were closed, the Clinton Hill COVID-19 Community Action team would come together and work in partnership with residents to organize immediate relief efforts for Clinton Hill. According to the New Jersey's Public Health Data Resource, an estimated 100,000 people in Essex County live in food insecure households . From June 2020 until August 2020, 9 Clinton Hill residents took the lead in distributing food to other Newark residents on their block. The COVID team and local partners created a system to distribute the groceries to pantry hosts. Adam Daigle, Business Editor of the Acadiana Advocate joined Jan Swift to discuss the biggest business news of 2020 and the Advocate’s upcoming Economic Summit to be held virtually on January 13, 2021. While our interview last year with Adam focused on the out-migration of Louisiana residents, this year's interview provides an interesting take on how Acadiana has survived amidst the incredible economic turmoil brought on by the pandemic. The newspaper industry took a hit in income along with all other industries and for a while, the Advocate staff experienced furlow days and a reduction in staff as the tourism drop led to the cancellation of events and the ensuing drop in advertising dollars. Yet, the Advocate held true to its 178-year-old history and has remained a reliable source of up-to-date news. Adam and his fellow journalists work both virtually from home and in the office as they continue to provide top-notch journalism from offices in New Orleans, Baton Rouge, and Lafayette. The top business story of 2020, of course, is COVID and its impact on the economy. While unemployment never hit the 25% level predicted by LEDA's Gregg Gothreaux, the region still lost double the amount of jobs experienced after Hurricane Katrina. Tourism jobs in the hotel and restaurant industries were devastated. Yet, the community rallied to support restaurants, even if just for pickup meals, to help keep the industry afloat. The hotel industry was greatly assisted by the natural disaster wreaked by Hurricane Laura. At the beginning of the pandemic in March 2020, hotel receipts were a mere $1 million; in September and October 2020, hotel receipts registered as one of the best ever at $9 million. The oil and gas industry took its lumps this year, with the price of oil reaching negative numbers at one point. While our regional economy has diversified and has not experienced as hard a hit as in the past, the loss of the oil and gas folks has greatly impacted our quality of life. Their absence impacts not only the economy but trickles down to support generated for the non-profit sector. There were big job gains to celebrate. SchoolMint, an educational technology firm, moved here from San Francisco. With the high price of doing business in the Silicon Valley area, Louisiana is an attractive alternative. Another big win for the region was the news of Westfield Hydraulics and the company’s affiliate, Westfield Fluid Controls, making a $5.1 million capital investment to establish a manufacturing facility in Lafayette. This is anticipated to create 67 new jobs with salaries of approximately $50,000 per year, as well as 106 new indirect jobs. In late December it was confirmed that Amazon is building a 1 million square foot distribution facility in Carencro behind the former Evangeline Downs Racetrack. According to a press release by Louisiana Governor John Bel Edwards, "more than 14,500 small and medium-sized businesses in the state participate in Amazon’s fulfillment network. From June 2019 through May 2020, those Louisiana entrepreneurs recorded a 49 percent growth in year-over-year sales." Carencro has experienced phenomenal growth in recent years with new subdivisions and retail establishments flourishing. Adam shared that the town will record #300 million in sales in 2020, a first for Carencro. Downtown Lafayette has made a lot of progress considering the impact of COVID and the resulting economic downturn. Adam thought it would be "the year of downtown," as there has been great anticipation of the redevelopment work to be done on the old Federal Courthouse site which has been long vacant; the project has been delayed, first due to the need for environmental cleanup and then the ensuing COVID shutdown and demise of the energy sector which altered market demands for more business space in the downtown region. Yet downtown is still diversifying its offerings, particularly with Jefferson Street attracting SugarWolf Outdoor...

Small Biz Matters – #187 Providing the small business community with educational content and advocacy since 2014with Alexi Boyd, broadcaster, advocate and small business owner.Date: 19 November 2020 In the world of small business data is everything. It helps us to control cash flow, maintain client relationships, streamline basic and complex processes and give us the confidence to know the decisions we make are based on real, up to date information. And the explosion of cloud based accounting software is what has given small business a power of on-demand financial data to be used in ways we could not have dreamed of only a few years ago. In fact, in times of crisis it’s been a saving grace - the one true source of truth. But what other ways, beyond how YOU process data, does it have the power to drive change? I’m delighted to be joined today by Trent Innes, Managing Director of Xero Australia & Asia to talk to Small Biz Matters about the power of data not only to drive the direction of your business but how it guides Govt policy and influences key decision makers all the way to the top. Topics we’ll be covering: Can you tell us about the Xero Small Business Insights program and the reasons for establishing it? To whom do you deliver the info and how does this powerful data guide policy? What trends have you been observing in small business in recent months? What do you believe to be the role of software companies when it comes to the power in this data and an advocate role? New September data indicates positive signs of revenue and jobs growth in Australian small business Xero, the global small business platform, has today released new data on the health of Australia’s small business sector in September from its Xero Small Business Insights (XSBI) program, in partnership with research firm AlphaBeta (part of Accenture).                                                          Based on anonymised and aggregated data of hundreds of thousands of customer records, the latest XSBI analysis shows the small business sector experienced its fastest revenue growth in six months and a jobs increase after a two-month pause. Revenue growth fastest in six months                                                   Small business revenue grew 5.2% year-on-year, the fastest pace since March 2020. This is just above pre-crisis average annual revenue growth of 4.6% (July 2019 to February 2020).                       Victoria, where lockdowns continued in September, recorded a 0.4% year-on-year revenue rise for the month, which was a significant turnaround from the 6% year-on-year decline recorded in August. Victorian health care (+10%), manufacturers (+8%), professional services (+9%) and retail trade (+8%) underpinned this year-on-year revenue growth result. Despite the rise in revenue in Victoria, the state is still lagging the rest of Australia with revenue growth almost five percentage points lower than the nationwide outcome.                                                       Jobs growth after two months pause                                                    After largely flat results in July and August, small business jobs rose 0.8% in September and have now recovered around two-thirds of the losses experienced when the crisis hit. As with revenue, the national result was helped by Victoria, where jobs rose 0.9% in September after falling 3.6% between end June and end August. Despite the rise in small business jobs in September, the Victorian labour market situation is by far the most challenging across Australia. Victorian jobs are still 10.9% lower than they were prior to the pandemic.                                                 The most positive news around jobs in September was the rise in the two hardest hit sectors so far, with hospitality (+3.2%) and arts and recreation (+2.5%) both recording a growth month-to-month. Although both sectors are still well below pre-crisis jobs levels, at -12% and -15% respectively. “It is encouraging to see national revenue figures returning to pre-COVID levels and industries that were hit the hardest – hospitality and arts and recreation – experiencing a growth in jobs. While small business has been showing a promising recovery, there is still a lot of support needed by the sector to continue this upward trajectory and ensure it can sustain any further turbulence. The September data also provides optimism of a steady rebound in Victoria as restrictions continue to ease,” said Trent Innes, Managing Director Australia and Asia, Xero. Casual jobs led the downturn but are now leading the rebuild XSBI data shows that casual employees were hit hard by the onset of the pandemic, when small business casual jobs fell 25% in late March and early April. From June, casual workers began to be rehired and employment of casuals has risen by 24% since the trough of late April.   There is however still some way to go to return to pre-pandemic small business casual employment levels which remain 5.7% below pre-crisis levels. This is a bigger shortfall than the overall job situation, which has small business jobs 3.9% lower than pre-crisis levels. Payment times remain faster than pre-crisis level In April and May average payment times rose slightly with small businesses waiting on average a day longer in April to be paid than the 25.4 days they waited in February. However, this trend reversed in June and by September, small businesses reported that average payment times were 24.1 days or 1.3 days faster than before the pandemic crisis. "Continued improvement in payment times to small businesses will be pivotal at this time. This can ease the strain the pandemic is placing on cash flow and boost confidence for businesses to rehire. This month is a critical one for small businesses and their employees with various government support measures either coming to an end or getting adjusted. The XSBI October data will provide early indications of how small businesses are adjusting to the new policy settings,” added Innes. To find out more go to their website: www.xero.com/small-business-insights/                                        About Xero Small Business Insights                                                                   The Xero Small Business Insights (XSBI) program provides analysis on the sector’s health, with its metrics based on anonymised, aggregated data drawn from hundreds of thousands of subscribers. The result is a picture of business conditions that’s more accurate than most private surveys, which typically have a far smaller sample size, and more frequently updated than much of the data on small business. Xero is currently producing a series of specialised monthly metrics, providing a view of the impact of COVID-19. In this episode, we revisit a classic crusade message from Greg Laurie on what it means to be an authentic believer, titled “How to Change for Good.” Reading from John 3, Pastor Greg examines the encounter between Jesus and Nicodemus to explain what it means to be born again.  Pastor Greg says, “You see, we can’t be neutral with Jesus. This is an either/or proposition. Jesus didn’t say, ‘Hey I am one of many ways and if I work into your schedule and into your belief system I would really appreciate it if you would make me your god of choice.’ No. Jesus said, ‘I am the way, the truth, and the life, and no man comes to the Father but by Me.’” If you would like to learn more about a personal relationship with Jesus Christ, just go to KnowGod.org. About this crusade:  This message was originally delivered June 22, 2007 by Greg Laurie at the RBC Center (now PNC Arena) in Raleigh, NC. From June 22–24, 41,500 attended this three-night event, with 2,471 making professions of faith in Christ. In the 30 years after the first Harvest Crusade in 1990, more than 600,000 people around the globe have dedicated their lives to following Jesus. --- Learn more about Greg Laurie and Harvest Ministries at harvest.org This podcast is supported by the generosity of our Harvest Partners. In this episode of the Carver Cast, we interview Professor Peter Feaver (Ph.D., Harvard, 1990), a Professor of Political Science and Public Policy at Duke University. Peter is Director of the Duke Program in American Grand Strategy. He is most recently the author of Armed Servants: Agency, Oversight, and Civil-Military Relations (Harvard Press, 2003) and of Guarding the Guardians: Civilian Control of Nuclear Weapons in the United States (Cornell University Press, 1992). He has published numerous monographs, scholarly articles, book chapters, and policy pieces on grand strategy, American foreign policy, public opinion, nuclear proliferation, civil-military relations, and cybersecurity. From June 2005 to July 2007, Feaver served as Special Advisor for Strategic Planning and Institutional Reform on the National Security Council Staff at the White House where his responsibilities included the national security strategy, regional strategy reviews, and other political-military issues. In 1993-94, Feaver served as Director for Defense Policy and Arms Control on the National Security Council at the White House where his responsibilities included the national security strategy review, counterproliferation policy, regional nuclear arms control, and other defense policy issues. He is an emeritus member of the Aspen Strategy Group, blogs at “Elephants in the Room” at ForeignPolicy.com, and is a Contributing Editor to Foreign Policy magazine. -- The Carver Cast engages with Christian faculty in higher education and highlights the work of those faculty to bridge connections between university, church, and society. In doing so, it seeks to disrupt the perceptions that Christians are “anti-intellectual” and that higher education is “anti-Christian.” Tune in for a wide-ranging discussion with faculty around the country, with mediocre production quality but excellent content! Penina Laker and John Inazu are Carver Project faculty fellows and members of the faculty at Washington University in St. Louis, where Laker is assistant professor of communication design and Inazu is a professor of law and religion.

Good Morning, RVA!

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 27, 2020

Good morning, RVA! It’s 75 °F, and it’s gonna be freaking hot today. You should expect highs in the mid 90s, but it’s going to feel 10 degrees hotter. We may get a bit of rain this evening to cool things off, though.Water coolerAs of this morning, the Virginia Department of Health reports 823↘️ new positive cases of the coronavirus in the Commonwealthand 21↗️ new deaths as a result of the virus. VDH reports 169↗️ new cases in and around Richmond (Chesterfield: 27, Henrico: 69, and Richmond: 73). Since this pandemic began, 311 people have - , died in the Richmond region. VCU reported 17 new cases, that’s 91 total, and now has 150 people in isolation or quarantine. It’s been a while, so here’s an updated version of the stacked statewide new positive cases, new deaths, and new hospitalizations graphs. It looks like Virginia has successfully re-flattened the curve of new cases—but at a much higher level than earlier this summer. From June 8th to July 8th, Virginia reported an average of 538 new cases each day. From July 26th to August 26th, the sate has reported an average of 995 new cases each day. Also, you can see that hospitalizations have increased steadily over that same time frame. Locally, the graph of the seven-day average of new reported cases in Chesterfield, Henrico, and Richmond is also pretty interesting. Henrico, too, has flattened their new-cases curve but at a level almost double that of Richmond. As for VCU, I’ll put together some graphs in a couple days after we have at least a week’s worth of data.I wanted to make sure and note that the CDC has changed their guidance for whether or not you should get coronatested if you’ve spent some time in close contact with someone else who tested positive. The previous CDC guidance read, “Testing is recommended for all close contacts of persons with SARS-CoV-2 infection. Because of the potential for asymptomatic and pre-symptomatic transmission, it is important that contacts of individuals with SARS-CoV-2 infection be quickly identified and tested.” The current CDC guidance reads, “If you have been in close contact (within 6 feet) of a person with a COVID-19 infection for at least 15 minutes but do not have symptoms: You do not necessarily need a test unless you are a vulnerable individual or your health care provider or State or local public health officials recommend you take one.” This is a concerning guidance change, since, as the original guidance notes, lots of folks are asymptomatic and can spread the virus around unknowingly. Also, there’s this: CNN reports that Dr. Fauci was under general anesthesia when the decision was made and that health officials say the change came “from the top down.” Not great! I hate this kind of thing because it erodes trust in the public health guidance, and then we end up with coronaparties and elected officials holding pieces of plastic in front of their faces instead of wearing masks.Hannah Eason and Andrew Ringle have a piece in the CT about VCU converting more space in the Honors College building into COVID-19 isolation units. This seems prudent to me, although the communication to faculty, staff, and student sounds lacking. Of note: “The spokesperson said a single cluster of 44 people in VCU Athletics tested positive as of Aug. 26.” “Cluster” has a specific epidemiological meaning, and I’m not sure if it’s being used that way here, but either way. Yikes.Del. Jeff Bourne had another police reform bill make it out of committee during this General Assembly special session. Yesterday, HB 5013, which would ban qualified immunity in certain situations, successfully reported out of the Courts of Justice committee and will now head to a vote by the full House. Brad Kutner at Courthouse News has a nice summary of what all of those words mean, which includes this sentence: “Qualified immunity and sovereign immunity are not easy legal concepts to understand.” OK! Kutner also notes that a similar version of HB 5013 (patroned by Joe Morrissey, who definitely still exists) died in the Senate. With all of that in mind, I am officially looking for the best longread or PDF on qualified immunity. Send me your links!Northsiders! I am not smart enough to know what it means, but Mark Robinson at the Richmond Times-Dispatch says that the Supreme Court of VIrginia removed at least one of the barriers to removing the A.P. Hill statue. I don’t know if the political moment for taking down monuments to dead white supremacists has passed, but, as a Northsider whose son went to the school adjacent to this particular monument, I’d love to see it go into the garbage. The Mayor announced a new grant program called Richmond Recovers that aims to cover the costs of an organization’s wages, benefits, rent, and utilities. The $3 million of funding comes from the CARES Act and will be distributed in $10,000–$15,000 chunks. You can read the full grant guidelines here(PDF), but the short of it is that your organization must have: fewer than 50 employees, less than $5 million of revenue in 2019, and have experienced a 25% reduction in revenue due to the pandemic. The online application opens on September 1st, so mark your calendar if you’re thinking about applying. There is a lot going on in the world of sports as athletes across the country have gone on strike in protest of the police shooting Jacob Blake. It makes me appreciate this makeshift basketball court at Marcus-David Peters Circle in a different way.Turns out, the correct date for the next Henrico County Board of Supervisor election is 2023. Thanks to everyone who wrote in and got me pointed in the right direction.I tell you what, it’s been really nice corresponding with GMRVA patrons over the last couple of weeks. With more folks supporting me and this email through Patreon, more folks seem willing to share their thoughts and concerns—which, in all honesty, makes for a better daily email. Not everyone agrees with everything I write each morning (looking back, myself included), but every single person has been kind and thoughtful. I think that’s rad. If you’d like to support Good Morning, RVAwith actual money, you can kick $5 or $10 my way each month through the Patreon. This morning’s longreadHow does your ugly garden growMy garden this year hasn’t been the most productive, but it has been incredibly fulfilling. I know there is A Lot Going On Right Now, but I’ve loved having time to tend to the garden while stuck at home. But I had a weird and lovely revelation about my ugly garden last week. So long as I actually like doing it, none of the other stuff matters. The health of the vegetables or the number of them — it doesn’t matter. If it dies, it dies; if it thrives, that’s good too. It’s not about the end product, but the daily practice of the garden: the great joy I get, as Samin Nostrat wrote about so beautifully, in watching a plant grow and change, even if it’s not growing and changing quite the way I’d like it to. If I were growing vegetables for sustenance, that’d be a different story. But I’m not a farmer, not even a mini-farmer. I’m a bad gardener, and bad gardening is my hobby. Not a hobby to do for show. Not something I can optimize or monetize. Instead, it sharpens my senses, gives me time in my own echoing mind — and, most importantly, it is not my job.If you’d like your longread to show up here, go chip in a couple bucks on the ol’ Patreon.

I conceived and created this podcast because over the years I have come to realize how fragile the human condition and the United States economy really is.From June 2008 – December 2009 I recorded the show during my 50 mile commute between Arlington and Frisco Texas. I now run the show as my full time business and record it each morning in my home office. Some of the very earlyl editions of this Podcast don’t have the best audio quality but I over time I have updated my recording equipment. Recording a podcast while driving on the interstate was a challenge but I have found it both enjoyable and a way to reclaim some of the three hours I loose each day. I decided to give it a try after I found Think Future News a Libertarian minded Podcast hosted by Chris Future (who just plain kicks ass) who also records his show while on the road. The Guiding Concepts The Survival Podcast are Based On Include1. Debt is cancer, it is killing our economy and killing the dreams of many Americans. There may be little you can do about the total national debt but you can control your own debt. Do so now!2. Protecting the environment is a good thing and it should be done. That said climate change is not our most immediate danger. We are not all going to die from global warming, the evidence that carbon is the cause is thin at best. The biggest cause of the green house effect is water vapor, don’t come here looking for activist environmentalism, you will be disappointed.3. In spite of our view expressed above we are huge supporters of alternative energy such as wind and solar. Primarily because they help to provide more self sufficiency and economic long term stability. The danger of oil is its finite nature and inability to meet long term global demand.4. Always be frugal, never be “cheap”. One protects your financial position the other always costs you more in the long run.5. No matter what the sheeple tell you, what you do does matter and you do control your own destiny. Live life to the fullest and understand that you have more control over your life then anyone or anything else.▶️ Donate Now: www.freedomain.com/donate▶️ Sign Up For Our Newsletter: www.fdrurl.com/newsletterYour support is essential to Freedomain, which is 100% funded by viewers like you. Charles belongs to the Choctaw tribe and his wife belongs to the Blackfoot tribe. 21 years ago, they started a non-profit organization called The Red Road. The Red Road exists to empower and share hope with Native American communities all over the country. He travels with his wife, Siouxsan, and their 7 children to do this incredible work.  A couple of years ago, Charles and his wife came up with a brilliant way to support the non-profit so they didn’t have to spend so much time fundraising. So, they started a cigar company! It’s called Atsiniki Cigars. Atsiniki means “Storyteller” in Choctaw. Their three cigars right now are named after three of their seven children: Nanaiya means Peace, Imaiya means Victory, and the Tashka means Warrior or Warrior Spirit. Follow Charles on Instagram. Visit The Red Road and Atsiniki Cigars to learn more about what they do and how you can get involved. If you’re ever coming through Nashville, stop by Smoker’s Abbey to grab some Atsiniki cigars. Today’s show is very special to me, and I want to give God all the glory. 5 years ago, God put it on my heart to write a book about everything I learned the hard way from the fitness industry. After years as a fitness model, writer and competitor, I saw the grip fitness goals and body image can have on us.  The word of God says, seek Him first and all things will be added to us, but the way the world does fitness, God isn’t even on the list. Today's show is going to show you what happens when God is front and center...right where He should be. My guest was able to lose 40 pounds in 7 months and even just completed her first 5K. And guess what ...it wasn’t on a diet. “F.I.T. and Kim’s testimony was my inspiration last year. From June to December, I lost 40 lbs and just completed a 5K. It wasn't another program I needed, it was prayer, surrender and a spirit-led walk! All glory to God!” -Patty Davis Patty and I share how Jesus makes all the difference as we cover: How she was able to lose 40 pounds and complete a 5K in only 7 months. How we see the battle people go through with dieting, and thinking there's a quick fix. The life-changing inspiration that has motivated her to start her own group. The one thing she wants people to know. How you can connect with her. Faith Fuel: My help comes from the Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth. ( Ps 121:2) And my God will supply all your needs according to His riches in glory in Christ Jesus. (Philippians 4:19) If you want to know more about the program Patty used to lose 40 pounds, head to www.kimdolanleto.com/fit.   The Faith Inspired Transformation, F.I.T. Also discussed this segment: The TV version of Amos 'n' Andy was among the first shows to be filmed using a three-camera setup (implementing that technique four months before I Love Lucy did, when that show premiered in October 1951), while the writers of Amos 'n' Andy included Joe Connelly and Bob Mosher, the future creators of Leave It to Beaver and The Munsters.  Learn more about your ad choices.
