Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day

Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day for October 14, 2024 is: taciturn • TASS-uh-tern • adjective Taciturn is a formal word that describes someone who tends to be quiet or who tends to speak infrequently. // One of the twins was taciturn and shy, while the other one was more outgoing. See the entry > Examples: “Joan Didion looks straight at the camera, with her fist curled in front of her mouth—as if to indicate it is through her hands that the taciturn thinker speaks.” — Evelyn McDonnell, The World According to Joan Didion, 2023 Did you know? Even if you consider yourself a person of few words, taciturn is a good one to keep in your pocket, if for no other reason than it's an efficient way to describe your own particular deportment. While ramblers ramble and babblers babble, the taciturn among us turn things down a notch, preferring to keep mum rather than add their voices to the verbal hubbub. Taciturn traces back ultimately to the Latin verb tacēre, meaning “to be silent.” While English users were quicker to adopt other tacēre descendants such as the adjective tacit (“expressed without words” or “implied”) in the 1600s and even the noun taciturnity in the 1400s, taciturn wasn't on anyone's lips until the 1700s.

It's a double act this week but not the usual one. Taciturn northerner Garry Doyle joins our normal “fan with a typewriter” Johnny Ward as we trawl through the week's news which is not too harsh on Pats, but harsh on RTE and rugby fans. But isn't rugby a popular sport? Not before 1987 apparently and Andy Farrell raises some questions too. Back with the roundy ball and we dip into the U19 league which has a Drogheda team flying, and United Park (or is it Weavers?) gets a thumbs up from the lads too, even though Sky don't like it. But even with the increased depth in the Premier Division we ask is it the coaches and the coaching that has generated the most fascinating league in recent memory? We reign Johnny in on Tangets, refuse to rule out Shamrock Rovers, and is Waterford the story of the season? All this and much much more as Collar & Cuff, Rascals Brewery, Lily's Childcare and Future Ticketing bring you episode 28 of a season that may be getting longer!

Our special guest for a deep dive into British naval espionage during the Cold War is Mike Hurley, a veteran of undersea deployments in dangerous waters. As a very young submariner in the late 1950s Mike endured marathon patrols in diesel-electric submarines, most notably HMS Taciturn. In this fascinating discussion with Warships Pod host Iain Ballantyne, Mike reveals how Taciturn ventured into Arctic waters to gather intelligence on Red Navy exercises and, potentially, the foe's secret technology. As a conventional (non-nuclear) submarine, Taciturn had to risk ‘snorting' to vent diesel fumes while charging her battery and also to suck in fresh air. This could expose the boat to the Russians. She was on one occasion attacked by a Russian destroyer and even detected by a potentially hostile submarine. With often grim conditions - going short of water, running out of fresh food and oxygen, not daring to make the slightest noise when in close company with the Soviets - HMS Taciturn's submariners somehow got through 38 days dived. On another patrol, communications were lost and it was feared by the boss of the Royal Navy's Submarine Service that Taciturn and her men might have disappeared. Such missions into the High North to spy on the Soviets were top secret. Once home again, Royal Navy submariners were under threat of imprisonment if they told even their families and loved ones about what they had been up to. Mike did not dare tell his family anything for a quarter of a century.  It is a privilege therefore to take Warships Pod listeners on a Cold War voyage with Mike Hurley aboard HMS Taciturn. Mike's warts and all account can only be likened to a latter-day ‘Das Boot' adventure due to its grungy details. Some of them are not for the faint-hearted! • Warships IFR magazine is available in shops and direct as both a hard copy mag and digital edition. Se va a llamar "Four Horses Take the Space Mountain". Escuchar audio

John Payne, inglés se unió al norteamericano Eric Norlander y creó The Dukes of the Orient. Escuchar audio

Synopsis “Gutland begins with the arrival of an outsider in the agricultural community of Schandelsmillen. Harvest season is already well underway, but Jens a German drifter, is looking for work. He's taken on as a farmhand — and taken to bed by Lucy (Vicky Krieps), a single mother who picks him up at the village beer hall. Taciturn and solitary by nature, Jens doesn't ingratiate himself to the locals, yet they take an instant liking to him, bringing him along to parties, gifting him a trumpet, and inviting him to join the village band. Jens' first days in his new home flow by with bucolic tranquillity, but over time he will begin to unearth clues to Schandelsmillen's shadowy side — just as the villagers will slowly catch on to something shady about Jens' past.” With thanks to Kerri Craddock Trailer ---------- For more information about David Peck's podcasting, writing and public speaking please visit his site here or check out the site of his podcast on film, social change and much more.
