Brisbane, Australia's The Saints are responsible for two of the greatest punk albums of all time, in 1977's '(I'm) Stranded' and 1978's 'Eternally Yours.' This November, look for “The Saints '73-‘78” to be touring North America, featuring original members Ed Kuepper and Ivor Hay, along with The Birthday Party's Mick Harvey, the Sunnyboys' Peter Oxley and Mudhoney's Mark Arm, in service of original lead singer Chris Bailey, lost to us in 2022. Additionally, there's a four-LP boxset version of the milestone debut album out, as well as a new solo album from Ed, done in conjunction with Jim White from the Dirty Three, called 'After the Flood.' Check out Goldmine author Martin Popoff interview The Saints guitarist/ vocalist/songwriter Ed Kuepper in a wide-ranging chat that looks at how The Saints dovetailed into the punk movement, along with a fair bit on each of the three albums covered by the upcoming tour, plus a look at the new solo album. We also touch upon the creative differences that led to Ed's split with Chris after the band's controversial third album, 'Prehistoric Sounds,' issued in October of 1978. Horns? Acoustic guitars? Surely The Saints didn't invent punk?! Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

We've reached the end of the road for this season—season 9 concludes with this episode, a conversation with Matthew Houck, the leader of the avant-country band Phosphorescent. In April, Phosphorescent released Revelator, the band's ninth album. It's their debut for Verve Records, after a string of well-received albums on Dead Oceans. Joined by collaborators like Jim White of the Dirty Three—who you heard earlier this season—Jack Lawrence of The Raconteurs, and his wife and songwriting partner Jo Schornikow, it finds Houck examining—what else?—the end of the world. If one theme has run through the last few seasons of this show, it's that of “apocalypse," or revelation. The veil, no matter how hard we try and keep it pinned down, keeps slipping away. Revelator finds Houck facing uncertain future, but also, leveling up. In its mournful ballads and genuinely hilarious odes to bathroom graffiti, you hear the voice of a songwriter probing the void: “And we've ridden beyond where we could safely touch down And we're out in the void, past where we could've had turned around I tried my feet on the floor, tried to beat on the door But it didn't even make a sound Got my heart open wide But the city been shut down” But Revelator is no dour screed; it is in fact filled with hope and good humor. In this episode, he joins us to extoll the glory of “unnecessary” art, his work on Paul Schrader's new film Oh, Canada; and the multiple apocalypses afoot. On this week's show, we pour one out for the late Kris Kristofferson, spend quality with new records from Alan Sparhawk, The Hard Quartet and Steve Wynn, and spotlight the sprawling new compilation Cardinals at the Window, a benefit to raise money to help the communities of Western Notrth Carolina that were affected by Hurrican Helene. All this & much, much less! Debts No Honest Man Can Pay started in 2003 at WHFR-FM (Dearborn, MI), moved to WGWG-FM (Boiling Springs, NC) in 2006 & Plaza Midwood Community Radio (Charlotte, NC) in 2012, with a brief pit-stop at WLFM-FM (Appleton, WI) in 2004.
This week on the show, we're pleased to present a conversation with Matt Sweeney. He's lived a truly dazzling life in music. After coming up playing with the great band Chavez, he contributed to masterworks of indie rock—including records by Cat Power and Bonnie “Prince” Billy, with whom he crafted the monumental 2005 classic Superwolf, a classic in the Aquarium Drunkard canon. He's also worked as an in-demand session player, working on recordings for the likes of Cat Stevens, Johnny Cash, Neil Diamond and other legends. Is Matt the only guy to play on both a Current 93 and Dixie Chicks project? We suspect so. His new band is called The Hard Quartet, which finds him joined by Stephen Malkmus of Pavement and The Jicks, Emmett Kelly of The Cairo Gang, and Jim White of The Dirty Three. Their self-titled debut is out this Friday, October 4th. To quote from Jennifer Kelly's Aquarium Drunkard review of their self-titled album: “The term ‘supergroup' gets thrown around a lot, and it often means nothing more than ‘these people have all been in other bands.' But the Hard Quartet is a true super group, composed of four guys who have made their mark in music.” Sweeney's a great conversationalist, and this talk gets into the new record, the philosophy of bass playing, the band's Monkees-like identity, the return of his web series Guitar Moves and much more. TV and Radio presenter, and former record company executive, Nicki Chapman goes head to head in a war of the words with producer, musician and label owner, Simon Raymonde. On this episode of Book Off we delve into two music memoirs, covering two very sides of the music industry and history, but that both have a lot in common. Simon was one third of the band Cocteau Twins between 1983 and 1997, and owns and runs the Bella Union label. As well as having his own successful music career as a musician and a producer, he has signed and worked with artists such as Fleet Foxes, Dirty Three, Midlake, Mercury Rev, John Grant, BC Camplight, Laura Viers and Flaming Lips. In this very honest and open conversation, he talks about the tumour on his brain which has effected his hearing, the influence of his father (Ivor Raymonde) on his career without knowing it, the break up of Cocteau Twins and how his label is still going strong more than 25 years later. Nicki worked at MCA and RCA records in the 90s in the promotions department, before going out on her own. Over her career, she has worked with many artists including Phil Collins, David Bowie, Kylie, M People, Annie Lennonx, Prince, Take That, Amy Winehouse, Billie Piper, Spice Girls and Liza Minelli. Nicki's book is swimming in 90s nostalgia (music, fashion, tabloids). She too shares her own personal account of having a brain tumour, which inspired her to want to write the book, as well as lots of stories from her time in the music industry. They also give us some brilliant book recommendations! The Book Off 'Sculpting In Time' by Andrei Tarkovsky VS 'Shardlake' by C.J. SamsonWe hope you enjoy this episode - and the latest series! Welcome back to Transmissions, our weekly conversational offering. On today's show? Nashville's own Rich Ruth. Opening his review of Ruth's latest, the Third Man Records LP Water Still Flows, Aquarium Drunkard's Brent Sirota states: “We don't even have a name for what has been going on in instrumental music lately. There's plainly some kind of new fusion afoot…[but] it doesn't really sound like old-school fusion. There's electrified jazz there, to be sure, but now it sits alongside krautrock, kosmische, psychedelia, minimalism, and ambient.” Like many, Ruth began making meditative music during the pandemic, resulting in his tremendous 2022 record, I Survived, It's Over. But with Water Still Flows, Ruth embraces grandiose riffs alongside his placid total soundscapes. The result is a record that feels heavy, while still possessing the calming center that defined earlier work. Sirota cites groups like Dirty Three and Godspeed! You Black Emperor, outfits given to transcendent abandon, and he's right on the money. We caught up with Rich and discuss. Our conversation takes more than a few interesting turns—who ever thought we'd end up discussing Creed, and yet here we are—but one thing's for sure: the freedom Rich Ruth and his collaborators exhibit is contagious—as is his charm. The esteemed post-rock(?) trio are three decades in and with increasing gaps between albums - a whopping twelve years this time between drinks. There latest is a unexpected balm for anxious times, near true ambient music in its way of sucking negative emotions out of you and replacing them with more meditative and positive energy.
"Reverb & Seduction" The Portland outfit Federale have been one of the most fascinating and inventive bands of the last twenty years. Led by Collin Hegna, Federale have put out a handful of albums whose affecting instrumental cinemascapes, dark country ballads and psych rock excursions bring to mind a version of and the Dirty Three had they hailed from the verdant and moody Pacific Northwest. The band's new album and sixth overall, Reverb & Seduction is an ambitious and wicked blend of dusty pedal steel, high desert reverb and ominous strings that all add up to a deliciously dark and foreboding feeling that something's going to happen and not only is not going to be good, there's nothing you can do to stop it. With a lineup that boasts members of The Shivas, Roselit Bone, Dandy Warhols, and Rogue Wave, plus a guest appearance by Alex Maas of The Black Angels, Reverb & Seduction is one of the year's very best. As for Hegna, he's a busy fellow--not only does he front Federale, he's been in the Brian Jonestown Massacre for the past two decades, which also makes him the longest serving member of that band, he's a recording engineer and owner of Revolver Studios in Portland where he's produced records by everyone from Roselit Bone to David J. www.collinghegna.com www.federalemusic.bandcamp.com www.stereoembersmagazine.com (http://www.stereoembersmagazine.com) www.bombshellradio.com (http://www.bombshellradiocom) www.alexgreenbooks.com (http://www.alexgreenbooks.com) Twitter: @emberseditor IG; @emberspodcast Email: editor@stereoembersmagazine.com

On episode 519 of Music File, Naomune Anzai introduces the legendary trio, Dirty Three, with their latest album, Love Changes Everything, their first album in over twelve years. - サウンドエンジニアの安齋直宗さんが担当する『Music File』。第520回目は、12年ぶりにアルバムをリリースしたトリオ、ダーティー・スリーが紹介されました。
There are heavy hitters, and then there's The Dirty Three. A trio comprising violinist Warren Ellis, guitarist Mick Turner, and drummer Jim White, these Australian independent rock legends recently returned with their first album in 12 year, the aptly titled Love Changes Everything. Though they are perhaps best known for their work with artists like Nick Cave (Warren is a foundational Bad Seeds member and works with Cave in a variety of other contexts), Cat Power, Bonnie "Prince" Billy, Bill Callahan, and Kurt Vile and Courtney Barnett, a very particular magic happens when they gather together. It's on full display on the new record, which does everything you hope a D3 record will: it rocks, it drifts, and it ventures boldly toward the unknown. That magic comes down to...well, as you'll learn in this episode, it's very tricky to pin down where magic—or love for that matter—comes from, and it only grows more elusive the more you try to name it. This week on Transmissions, The Dirty Three explore their history, reflect on the life and work of Steve Albini, and recall their days opening for The Beastie Boys. For over thirty years, Jim White has been the drummer of choice for many of the most compelling songwriters working. Now, with assitance from producer Guy Picciotto, he's created his first solo album, All Hits: Memories.
Leaving behind traditional rock 'n roll structures for more experimental avenues is nothing new for post-rock bands stretching back to The Velvet Underground drones or Brian Eno's ambient albums. It's stretches boundaries into free jazz, krautrock, math rock, and more often with a mechanical feel. That is quite the opposite of what the Dirty Three accomplish on their 1996 album Horse Stories, filled with the improvisations of Warren Ellis on violin, Mick Turners on guitars and bass, and Jim White on drum. The three-piece creates a wide cinematic scope, using space and slow building dynamics to evoke European folk ballads, traditional blues, classical music and much more. The Autumns, Beach House, The Dears – fucking love The Dears, Dirty Three, Emmy the Great, Fionn Regan Howling Bells, John Grant, Lanterns on the Lake, Laura Veirs, Lift to Experience, Midlake, The Walkman…For the last 25 years, Bella Union have been responsible for bringing me some of the best music I've ever heard. And before that, the label's owner, Simon Raymonde, in tandem with Elizabeth Fraser and Robin Guthrie in the immortal Cocteau Twins, was responsible for bringing me even more. I can't imagine what my listening habits would look like without Simon and without Bella Union, and so I'm delighted to speak to him on this episode about all of the above and more. We talk about the band Simon is currently managing – the brilliant Big Joanie – how Bella Union came to be, his thoughts on the legacy of his old band the Cocteau Twins, his feelings on where the record business finds itself in 2023, his forthcoming memoir, and his posthumous relationship with his father, the late, great Ivor Raymonde. How great? I mean, he wrote the Dusty Springfield song 'I Only Want to Be with You'! In episode 71 I talk to Marissa Paternoster about Nina Nastasia, an American folk singer-songwriter. A native of Los Angeles, she first came to prominence in New York City in 2000 after Radio 1 disc jockey John Peel began giving her debut album, Dogs, airplay. The album earned Nastasia a cult following, and was re-released in 2004. Her fifth studio album release, You Follow Me (2007), was a collaboration with Australian drummer Jim White of Dirty Three. As of 2022, Nastasia has released a total of seven studio albums, each recorded by Steve Albini. Her musical style has been described as folk and country-influenced with neo-Gothic overtones, often featuring sparse acoustic guitar accompanied by string arrangements.

This week we have the first of two episodes on Nina Nastasia, as we go deep into her career, decision to vanish from the public eye, recent events and much, much more. It's been a wee while since we did a head-to-head episode, but Chris and Vicki couldn't agree which of her albums was the best, so here we are. Vicki has chosen her second album, The Blackened Air, whilst Chris has gone for her 2007 collaboration with The Dirty Three's Jim White, You Follow Me. But there's a bit of an elephant in the room here that we felt we had to address. As of writing (September 2022), Nina is in the midst of wrapping up press for her most recent album, Riderless Horse. It's a landmark album for her in two ways: One: it is her first album in over a decade. In the time between this album and 2010's Outlaster, she essentially vanished from the public eye, except for one single that she released in 2018 called Handmade Card. Two: it is the first release since the suicide of her partner Kennan Gudjonsson. She has openly stated in interviews recently that Kennan had a lot of input into almost all aspects of her career, so this album, in her view, is also her first ever “solo” album as it is the first time she's ever made music without her former lover. In the press surrounding Riderless Horse Nina has gone into a lot of detail around the nature of her relationship with Gudjonsson, particularly with regards to his controlling, manipulative behaviour and how long it really took her to see it. Needless to say, there was no way we couldn't bring this up in any conversation about Nina Nastasia's music given how integral Gujonsson was, by her own admission, to her music. On this week's episode we chat about some more biographical elements of her life, focusing on her relationship with Gudjonsson, how it effected the music, her personally and the overall trajectory of her career. There is discussion of abuse in this episode, so please bear that in mind before listening. Next week: we talk exclusively about her music, so tune in!
It's a reunion of sorts as former housemates Poppamoot, Jay Bone and The Big Alabama are together to talk about sharing music and memories. How do you make Bomb Shelter? Have you thrived, or survived? We also discuss crisis management, … Continue reading →

“It's funny because with art, with literature, with music, we are all connected. It's emotion. You know, like if I say, “have you read this or that,” or… “do you know Alice Coltrane? Do you know John Coltrane?” Whatever it is you've got a language and there's a connection going on. And, we should have that with the world. We should have that feeling of like an artistic sensibility to the world. We do have that with other things. People can talk about movies and they feel connected in a way. Religions connect people… we should be all connected by the Earth.” – Warren Ellis Musician and composer, Warren Ellis of the Dirty Three and Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds had an extremely productive pandemic. Not only did he release two albums, two film scores and a book, but he also opened a wildlife sanctuary in Indonesia. Last spring, Warren co-founded Ellis Park, a forever home for disabled wildlife in South Sumatra. It's a haven for animals who have been rescued from wildlife trafficking who are either too traumatized or too handicapped to be returned to the wild. Ellis Park will also be used as a hub to educate the public, locals and visitors to the park about the negative impacts on wildlife used in the tourism industry and those saved from the illegal pet trade and wildlife smuggling. And, last fall, Warren published his first book, Nina Simone's Gum. It's about a piece of gum that Nina Simone was chewing during her last concert in London. As she left the stage, she placed her chewed gum on her piano. Warren snatched the gum. He kept it for over two decades… until the gum took on a life of its own. The book is about meaning and connection and trusting intuition when it calls on you to follow a thread, and it's about the love and magic that we humans are capable of. And in many ways Ellis Park has a very similar story. The Interview:Musician Warren Ellis' first book, Nina Simone's Gum (Faber & Faber, 2021), is a magical journal mixing memoir, cultural history, reportage, and travelogue. The memorable title comes from the Meltdown Festival, a concert series his regular collaborator, Nick Cave, curated in London in 1999 that featured a rare live performance by Nina Simone herself. After her set, Ellis rushed the stage—not for a coveted set list, but for a piece of chewing gum Simone had discarded atop her piano, which he then preserved in a rolled-up hand towel. Ellis' memento lived in a crumpled Tower Records bag for the next 20 years. Two decades later, when Cave curated “Stranger than Kindness,” an exhibition at the Royal Danish Library in Copenhagen, he included Simone's gum as a piece of sculpture cast in silver. Cave called it a “religious artifact.”In Nina Simone's Gum, Ellis brings you along as he tracks the artifact for posterity. The book is a meditation on life, musicianship, and the importance of bestowing meaning to objects and experiences; it is also a tome about friendship, the artistic process, and human connection. To mix things up—and because Ellis was on tour—Dermot McPartland, our man in London, took over interviewing duties. The Reading:For the reading this episode, Warren Ellis reads from Nina Simone's Gum, his latest book.Music by Dirty Three
Listen to an interview with Julie Marshall from the World Food Programme speaking on the rising numbers of people facing acute and starvation level hunger in the world today, this is a reality that has been exasperated by the pandemic crisis of COVID-19. Particularly this conversation also focuses on Afghanistan, a context within which Canada was involved in a NATO military intervention. Today there are 22 million people facing danger in regards to food security in Afghanistan and I thought it was important to highlight this point from the perspective of an international institution doing concrete frontline work, as part of the UN infrastructure, to address this crisis in Afghanistan. Tosh and Kimley are joined by special guest Andrea Tetrick to discuss NINA SIMONE'S GUM by Warren Ellis. Warren Ellis is a multi-instrumentalist and frequent collaborator with Nick Cave as well as a member of The Bad Seeds and the trio Dirty Three among other music projects. He now adds talented writer to his resume with this new book which is part memoir but also an homage to art and artists and their power to inspire and lift us up. When Ellis takes Nina Simone's gum from her piano after a transcendent performance, it takes him on an epic adventure while he contemplates the meaning and importance of these precious objects that we carry with us. Jordan sits down to a wild, funny, moving conversation with violinist, composer, Bad Seed, and author of Nina Simone's Gum Warren Ellis. It's an honest examination of where Warren's new book came from, how he learned how to write it, and why the potato is the miracle of the tuber world. Warren Ellis is an Australian multi-instrumentalist and composer, most famous for his work as collaborator and bandmate of Nick Cave, in both the Bad Seeds and Grinderman. Both solo and alongside Nick he is also a multi-award-winning film composer whose soundtracks include The Proposition, The Road, The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford, Mustang and most recently This Train I Ride. His own band Dirty Three have released eight studio albums since 1994 and he is an in-demand producer and writer, working with artists including Marianne Faithful, Jupiter and Okwess and Tinariwen. It's time to tackle that moment when the front man takes a back seat - yep, this one is all about 'Instrumentals'. No vocals. It's the bands time to shine. You'll also hear about their favourite examples that survive the ‘skip' test. Bands chatted about in this episode: - Led Zeppelin, Metallica, Neu - Parliament, Pavement, Primus - Spiderbait, Tame Impala, TOY, Tea Party - Throbbing Gristle, Three Trapped Tigers, - Frank Zappa, Dirty Three, Mike Patton, Fantomas, Mogwai, Godspeed You! The Dirty Three, Grinderman and Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds all have one creative link: Australian musician Warren Ellis. In the past year, not only has he released albums with Nick Cave and Marianne Faithfull, he's also decided to build an animal sanctuary in Indonesia.
Lute-based and percussion driven, the rugged duo of Cretan lauto player George Xylouris (scion of one of Greece's most revered musical families) and Australian drummer Jim White (he's played with Bonnie ‘Prince' Billy, PJ Harvey, Nina Nastasia, Cat Power, and Dirty Three) perform groove-based, improvisatory music that is both grounded in Cretan tradition- the island has a great history of singers, lyra players, and other folk musicians – and fused with the rugged vitality of raw rockenroll. The duo gives us a preview of their latest record, Mother, due out early next year, in-studio. Watch Xylouris White's session via Facebook Live:

How two drummers, from Australia's most iconic instrumental bands, found their rhythm.featuring Tony Buck, Jim White and Woody McDonaldTony Buck earned his stripes as a jazz drummer in the Sydney Conservatorium of Music before forming cult improv band The Necks. Jim White earned his chops as a punk drummer in raucous Melbourne pubs throughout the early days of noise rock trio The Dirty Three. From opposite ends, their rhythms lay the foundation for the best instrumental bands in Australia. This is the story of how it all unfolded. Listen to the first edition of Free City Radio podcast, it was recorded in the first days of the major measures taken in Montreal to slow the #COVID19 pandemic. Included in this podcast is personal reflections on this moment and also on doing street art during this time, on hanging a banner reading "solidarité" and the context behind this banner, because it was a gift from student activists in Winnipeg passed on during the Quebec student strike in 2012. I had visited Winnipeg to share reflections and texts from a booklet that I put out during that time, the zine is called , Le fond de l'air est rouge, info : https://howlarts.net/words Within this podcast I share an excerpt of audio recorded during protests in the Quebec student strike, specifically in Victoriaville where the Liberal Party of Quebec was having their congress. The street protests were focused on highlighting social injustice and protesting for the protection of public institutions, such a public health care and education systems. You can hear the full audio that I recorded at that protest for @radiockut here : https://soundcloud.com/freecityradio/lintense-journee-de-manifestation-a-victoriaville Also in this podcast is an interview with John Tarleton, editor at The Indypendent, speaking about the importance of independent media during this time and also the history of the Indypendent newspaper project in NYC. This was recorded before the pandemic hit North America in a major way, but it really does highlight some important points of reflection. https://soundcloud.com/freecityradio/interview-john-tarleton-editor-at-the-indypendent Finally a note to say this podcast includes two music selections, one by the band Weeping Icon, who are based in Brooklyn, released by @firetalk info : https://weepingicon.bandcamp.com Also I included a track by my brother Jordan Christoff who releases many different music tracks, the one we hear is "Angle Flow" from the album "Water" released via @salmonuniverse info : https://salmonuniverse.bandcamp.com/album/water Main song for Free City Radio, the intro / ending track is "Hope" by the Melbourne based band, The Dirty Three ! Thanks for listening to the first edition, this podcast is hosted by community organize, musician and media maker Stefan @spirodon Christoff
Our guest on the latest episode of Soundtracking has probably been mentioned almost as many times on this podcast as John Williams and Hans Zimmer. Warren Ellis is a multi-instrumentalist musician and composer who is a member of Dirty Three, Grinderman and Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds, and has also written several film scores with Nick in addition to his own projects. Warren was kind enough to join Edith while in isolation at his Paris studio to talk about his career and, well, this strange and worrying crisis humanity finds itself in right now. It was a joy to speak to him - we really hope you have as much fun listening to it as we did making it.

Warren Ellis' music has been the soundtrack to my adult life. I remember when I first heard Dirty Three, they were like nothing else around; an instrumental band with a violinist who played like Hendrix, and epic songs that tore at the very fibre of your being. I listened to their albums and like many others put my own meaning into those wordless songs. In the mid 90's we started seeing him more in the Bad Seeds. He found a friend and collaborator in Nick Cave, they would form Grinderman together and compose beautiful soundtracks for film and television. Warren Ellis doesn't sit still. He also rarely looks back.. for him, creative life is about propelling forward, solving the mystery of song that awaits in his next project. When Dirty Three announced they'd be performing their debut album in full, I knew I wanted Waz to Take 5. He's always been the most entertaining part of Nick Cave doco's, and his fiery spirit on stage is magnetic; I wanted to get close to that, see what made him tick. What I witnessed, was an entirely different Warren Ellis. In a pin drop quiet room, he took us from his childhood in Ballarat, to the streets of Europe, finding his voice in Melbourne and then leaving it all behind to become the man he is today. Songs in the key of Waz. From the maestro himself. John Ellis - ‘Mis'ry is my Middle Name' Johnny Cash - ‘Orange Blossom Special' Beethoven - ‘Symphony 7 slow movement number 2 Allegretto' Arleta - ‘Mia Fora Thymamai (I Remember a Time)' Alice Coltrane / John Coltrane – ‘The Sun'

Sending love from Eagle Rock! Overheard:New Yorkers are not "nice", but we are friendly. Angelenos are not friendly, but they are "nice". [last word spoken through a clenched perma-grin]In this edition:Some happy celloA bit o’ moaninA podcast I listened to twice[the Santa Monica beer kundalini is strong. Horchata?]It's easy to look at the music career landscape these days and feel like we're stuck in quicksand, with the machines taking over and whatnot.Artificial intelligence may be a slick bit of mythmaking, but artificial music has definitely been dominating the scene for awhile now and the results are debilitating.I like a lot of the noises made by machines, but I hate the power dynamic. Where we used to have all these different kinds of bands and orchestras led by all manner of currupt people - with doors nevertheless open everywhere for an enterprising musical human to wend our way to expertise and success - now we all have the “means of production” at our fingertips - but very few places in which to bounce sound around.A DJ event can feel like the musical version of a fascist rally. Led by the machines, a DJ is merely an operator with the thinnest set of instructions. What we miss when the instruments are stashed away in closets is the very voice of democracy, of humanity. Forgetting how to play is like forgetting how to speak.(Folks have forgotten how to dance too, but that's someone else's soapbox.)Meanwhile, "Jazz" has become like dentistry. There’s only room in there for the most studied, qualified, pedigreed professional players. Slightly less exclusive than the NBA but with 1/1000th the paycheck for the winners. The folk scene, the rock scene... plenty to complain about: as professional playing opportunities get ever rarer, machines are an outlet which emerged to fill the void of human engagement.I can now make a record on my phone, as long as I stick to the grid. But the adventure lies off the grid. Off the grid is where you'll find friendship, power, delight, freedom, freshness, luxury, respect, romance, tension, strength, sex and the safety brought by full-organism involvement. The digitized music scene of today has everything and nothing. More sound in it than ever before, but increasingly disintermediated, overpriced and more underpaid than ever.So make yourself a classic record. If you're truly lucky maybe you'll get sampled by a rapper. Meanwhile the Irish group from the corner bar has long been replaced by a TV and the jukebox sounds like a perpetual beer commercial. I've written myself into a hole. What's the way forward Trev?Get your head off the bar and make your noise. In the meantime, The Dirty Three will save you....a podcast I listened to twice:The conversation gets deeply wonky and goes slow as molasses. I started it while doing the dishes and then let it run in the background. Then I tuned out for a bit, but the last half hour really caught me and I found myself rewinding to listen from the beginning.David Brooks has really been through it, and it changed him. He’s beautifully vulnerable in this wide-ranging interview. I’ve never been a huge fan, but this one felt like a valuable listen.https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/the-disillusionment-of-david-brooks/id1081584611?i=1000437042197gigs this month:Still on the road! Warren Ellis and co. have contributed quite a lot to the Australian musical landscape. Indeed, many would say that it is Ellis' penchant for Celtic rhythms and Eastern European grooves that gives Dirty Three an identity that stands apart from the weird, seemingly generic landscape or Australian music. His work with Nick Cave on both the Bad Seeds' music and film scores cements him as a kind of of neo-Western figure, a man whose singular drive and vision has expanded beyond the realms of rock music. His compatriots Mick Turner and Jim White stand in similar stead, adding to the mythos of the band, both of them standing alone as visionary musicians whose musical development has been chronicled on tape as part of this illustrious trio. No one can deny this band's talent. As individual players they are wonderful, as unit they are nothing short of sublime. Dirty Three craft music which is heartfelt, melancholic, textured and intelligent without being difficult. Both Chris and David agree that this is their defining moment. Should this be added to our discography? Vote below.

A celebration of sad songs with music aficionado Angus Huntsdale. Angus explains the appeal of listening to sad songs and shares some of his favourites by Perfume Genius, Dirty Three, Elliott Smith and Weddings Parties Anything.
The CICM ASM is happening next month. It is in Hobart. That’s in Tasmania. In 2017 the ASM was in Sydney and it was conspicuous for its efforts to bring more young trainees to the forum. Lewis Macken and company did a great job. Bringing youth and energy to the Sydney International Convention Centre. There were podcasts like this one, there were talks recorded and shared on IntensiveCareNetwork.com, there was humour, there was Fast Transit and there was a deliberate effort to get a better gender balance. One of that team was Naomi Diel.; ebullient, brilliant, and brave. Naomi shook it up a bit with help from her friends, who she constantly gives credit to. And it turns out that the ASM is as much about making friends as anything else. Have a listen to her insights into running one of these things and then ask yourself: could you do that? I suspect you probably could, I also suspect that the College would like you to think about it. Get involved, consider putting your hand up for your regional committee. The ICU Update is already booked out but there are still places for the ASM itself and the trainee symposium ($330). Sara Yong is in the thick of the Trainee Symposium again. There are a bunch of excellent educators in there; Celia Bradford, David Pilcher, Priya Nair, David (Neo) Anderson, Peter Kruger, Ray Raper, Peta Alexander, Sara Allen and more. Sonia Langlais talks about rural ICU and there is a very interesting session on Fellowships years from people that know. Personally I think we should be making the Trainee Symposium be cheaper, perhaps entirely free. We need a big sponsor that understands the big picture. The sort of trainee that turns up at this sort of thing will be the director of an ICU near you sometime soon. It would surely be a good value item to sponsor in an unobtrusive fashion. Thanks to Naomi for talking to us. Thanks to Low and The Dirty Three for two tiny grabs from their utterly brilliant "In The Fishtank 7" EP recorded in 1999 and produced by Zlaya Hadzic for the "In The Fishtank" series on Konkcurrent Records. On the eve of their new album's release, guitarist Evan Purdey from Melbourne punk band Gold Class, joins me to talk about a band who has stealthily become one of the most influential in modern Australian music - the Dirty Three. My Favorite Album is a podcast on the impact great music has on our lives. Each episode features a guest on their favorite album of all time - why they love it, their history with the album and how it's influenced them. Jeremy Dylan is a filmmaker, journalist and photographer from Sydney, Australia who has worked in the music industry since 2007. He directed the the feature music documentary Jim Lauderdale: The King of Broken Hearts (out now!) and the feature film Benjamin Sniddlegrass and the Cauldron of Penguins, in addition to many commercials and music videos. If you've got any feedback or suggestions, drop us a line at myfavoritealbumpodcast@gmail.com.
Nick Cave and Warren Ellis are two of the world’s most iconic, influential, and inspiring musicians working today. Originally from Australia, Nick Cave has altered the course of rock 'n' roll and invented a new kind of leading man in bands like the Birthday Party and Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds. His countryman Warren Ellis is a gifted and daring multi-instrumentalist, renowned for his work in Dirty Three and he joined Cave, as a member of the Bad Seeds, in the mid-1990s. The pair have become close collaborators in the Bad Seeds, they worked together in a a now defunct band called Grinderman, and together they've also composed riveting and acclaimed scores and soundtracks for theatrical productions and films like The Proposition, The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford, The Road, Hell or High Water, and most recently, the feature films War Machine and Django. Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds dispatched a well-received album called Skeleton Tree in the fall of 2016 and in May of 2017, Mute Records released a comprehensive retrospective called Lovely Creatures: The Best of Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds (1984-2014), and they’ve been touring behind these efforts lately. Captured in a hotel restaurant on the afternoon of their second sold out show at Massey Hall in Toronto, here Warren and Nick discuss their history as friends and colleagues, how Warren wound up in the Bad Seeds, how they work together and their relationships to melody and noise, Nick’s unique relationship with his audience and why he needs them now, recording Skeleton Tree, upcoming plans, and much more. Sponsored by Pizza Trokadero, the Bookshelf, and Planet Bean Coffee.
Xylouris White: Xylouris White is the brainchild of Greek singer and Lute guitar player George Xylouris and Australian drummer Jim White, who is best known for his work in Dirty Three. Often described as a fusion of free-jazz, avant rock and age-old folk tradition, this masterful 2 piece has gained worldwide recognition, playing in venues across the globe. The pair have released two albums, ‘Goat’, their 2014 debut, which topped the Billboard charts, and more recently, ‘Black Peak’ in late 2016. However, this innovative and quintessential band can not be squeezed into merely what they produce on record, as their live show is what really captures the heart and soul of their music. Recorded at the PBS FM Studios in Melbourne on the 11th of March, 2016. Engineered by Paul Maybury. Cash Savage And The Last Drinks: Cash Savage and the Last Drinks are what's still good about country music today. A combination of all the good things about blues and country, but with a dark spin on it, these Melbournians really hit the nail on the head when it comes to clever songwriting and musical arrangements. Touring around Australia and pulling some major support slots, most notably with The Peep Tempel, they have garnered a large support base, waiting on their every word. Having released three albums to date, their 2016 effort ‘One Of Us’ has been their largest success to date. Recorded at the PBS FM Studios in Melbourne on the 8th of February, 2017. Engineered by Alicia Saye & Paul Maybury, Airing details: Originally via Zed Digital, 7-8pm, Sunday 5th of March 2017. Show production and engineering: Branko Cosic.

The period of the 1960s and ‘70s was a fertile one for Italian composers Luciano Berio, Nino Rota, and Ennio Morricone; a stunning recording from 1973 of Sun Ra’s piece Astro Black with June Tyson singing; Sue’s Last Ride from Dirty Three.
Xylouris White is an extraordinary music pairing featuring George Xylouris, a renowned lute player in the Cretan folk tradition, and Jim White, a tremendous drummer known for his work in the Dirty Three and with Will Oldham, PJ Harvey, Nick Cave, and more. Ghost Notes: Forming in 2009, Ghost Notes are an instrumental five piece from Brisbane who call the likes of The Dirty Three, Tortoise and Godspeed! You Black Emperor among their various and varied influences. They released two long players, the 2011 By Cover Of Night and the very recently released Hidden Horizon. The set we have got for you today features a few songs from the bands performance at The Beetle Bar in Brisbane back in late 2012, playing alongside the likes of Nikko, Sucks and the Keep On Dancin’s. Recorded by Darragh Murray. Mixed by Cameron Smith. Recorded at The Beetle Bar, Brisbane. Harmony: A melange of souful rock and roll and gallow blues, Harmony are one of the best bands going in Australia today. Featuring the powerful voice and guitar of Tom Lyncoln (The Nation Blue), drummer Alex Kastaniotis, and bassist Jon Chapple (ex-Mclusky), Harmony also throw in a three-part gospel choir for good measure which gives their sound even more transcendental dynamics. Recently, they’ve followed up their critically acclaimed self-titled debut with a solid 7 inch release of ‘Do Me A Favour’ in early 2013, with their second record due to be released sometime very soon. Until then you can enjoy this exclusive live set from the band. Recorded by Darragh Murray and Branko Cosic. Mixed by Branko Cosic. Recorded at the Alhambra Bar, Brisbane. Airing details: Zed Digital (8pm Friday August 23 2013) & 4ZZZ FM (11pm Thursday August 29 2013) Show production and engineering: Darragh Murray. Thanks: Cameron Smith, Jamie Curran, Branko Cosic,
For Episode 30 of Love That Album, I’m joined by Tim Merrill to discuss the second album by the supergroup Tex, Don and Charlie, “All Is Forgiven”. Tex is Tex Perkins, ex-lead singer of Beasts of Bourbon and The Cruel Sea. Don is Don Walker, songwriter for Cold Chisel, Catfish and his current project the Suave Fucks (the best band name EVER). Charlie is Charlie Owen, guitarist extraordinaire to a myriad of projects, but probably most famous for his involvement with the Divynyls. These three gents (along with support from Shane Walsh, Garrett Costigan and the Dirty Three’s Jim White) have put together two brilliant albums of bluesy, country-esque songs with tales of murder, infidelity, spiders on the dunny (look it up) and the sort of activities that listeners to Silva and Gold podcast would appreciate on a night in. Tex and Don know how to weave compelling stories within their lyrics. The songs are simple but with melodies and arrangements that are perfect and won’t leave your head. Think of latter day Tom Waits ballads and you have an idea what this is about. Tim and I have a great old time discussing this album and a swag of other things. He has brilliant insight into music, is a great conversationalist, and it was an absolute pleasure having him on the show again. Once again, Eric Reanimator presents another great “An Album I Love” segment. This time he discusses Drivin’ and Cryin’s “Mystery Road”. A show highlight.
