Today we welcome author and editor Teodrose Fikre for a discussion about his profound article about Malcolm X’s warnings on American political parties and their “bourgeois hustlers”. We talk about colonization, the weaponization of identity, the deliberate division of the people and the need for unity and collaboration for inclusive justice. Teodrose Fikre, is the co-founder and editor of the Ghion Journal and host of video shows on the Ghion Journal channel. Originally from Ethiopia, he is a published author, a prolific writer, a former consultant in the defense industry and a former community organizer and political activist. He told me about his two year journey, going from a life of upper-middle class privilege to a time of hardship and struggle, and how this taught him a valuable lesson in the essence of togetherness and the need to speak against injustice. He believes we should focus not just on the symptoms but need to get over the divides and actually speak truth to power instead of speaking half truth to power, and that’s what the Ghion Journal is all about. His writing defies conventional wisdom and challenges readers to look outside the constraints of labels and ideologies that serve to splinter the people. FOLLOW Teodrose Fikre at @TeodroseFikre. In this segment Teodrose Fikre, founder and editor of the Ghion Journal, discusses how in these times of converging crises, people need to move beyond decisive political discourse, and instead toward more empathetic, nuanced, and unifying forms of political discourse that can more adequately address the often ignored underlying trends currently playing out in our society. If we can't overcome these regressive, divisive, and distracting forms of communication, we will be unable to generate the insight and focus we collectively need to face the underlying economic, political, and social problems plaguing our society today. In this episode, I speak with Teodrose Fikre - journalist, editor, and founder of the Ghion Journal. In his exploratory writings on current events, Teodrose wades through the divisive discourse prevalent in the US media more broadly, and points to underlying trends that run beneath the mainstream discourse. Teodrose writes about these subjects with the intention to elevate the political discourse above the often regressive and divisive labeling and accusatory language used to divide and distract the population away from the underlying root problems in the socio-economic system we exist within presently. Teodrose discusses a two year period in his life where he went "from a life of upper-middle class privilege to a time spent with the huddled masses" that "taught Teodrose a valuable lesson in the essence of togetherness and the need to speak against injustice."* Teodrose examines how this period of struggle ultimately informed the work he does today with the Ghion Journal, and how alternative media more broadly can provide the space necessary to engage in forms of discourse that elevate the political conversation above the regressive categories and labels that inevitably distract us away from examining more deeply the underlying trends in our society and culture today. *Source: https://ghionjournal.com/author/admin Episode Notes: - Read Teodrose's writings and keep up to date with the Ghion Journal at the website: https://ghionjournal.com - Follow the Ghion Journal on Twitter: https://twitter.com/GhionJournal - Follow the Ghion Journal on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/GhionJournal - Follow Teodrose on Twitter: https://twitter.com/teodrosefikre - The song featured in this episode is "Shine a Light (feat. A few years ago, Teodrose Fikre was an Associate at Booz Allen Hamilton making a six figure salary consulting agencies at the Pentagon, Fort Belvoir and Department of Treasury and a wide array of defense and civil agencies throughout the Washington, DC metro area. I provided IT and business process improvement consultation for an alphabet soup of federal agencies and led a very comfortable life. I built up an "impressive array" of credentials and degrees; an MBA from Johns Hopkins, a PMP certification as well as a six sigma certified project manager. From the outside, I was the quintessential American success story. But these things, titles and accomplishments, could not fill the void I felt as accomplishments for the sake of accomplishment always felt like I was chasing unfulfilling pavements. Then the swerve of life happened and in a fell swoop, I fell into a crevice of turbulence. Equal parts malicious imposition and my own imprudence took me from upper-middle class comforts to day to day distress that comes with indigence. But where burdens exist, blessings are evident if we only look for them. It was precisely my two-year exodus that gave me a revelation of true injustice and gave me the wisdom to pursue truth and justice without regard to the labels and constructs that separate us.I am a published author and a writer whose speech idea was incorporated into Barack Obama's South Carolina victory speech in 2008. Once thoroughly entangled in politics and a partisan loyalist, a mugging by way of reality shed political blinders from my eyes and led me on a journey to fight for universal justice. For more about The Ghion Journal visit their website www.ghionjournal.com.
