Episode 272SpaceX has made history with its Starship rocket, the largest rocket ever built and one that's hoped to eventually take us to Mars. In its fifth test, SpaceX successfully returned the rocket's booster back to the launchpad and caught hold of it – an engineering feat of great finesse. But how close are we to putting crew on the rocket–- and when will it take humanity to the Red Planet? Leah-Nani Alconcel, spacecraft engineer at the University of Birmingham, joins the conversation. We might be closer than ever before to bringing Tasmanian tigers (thylacines) back from extinction. That's if de-extinction company Colossal is right about their latest discovery, of a nearly complete genome of the thylacine. Is this the breakthrough it seems to be? And can we truly bring back thylacines as they once were? Brain scans have revealed that bullying has a physical effect on the structure of the brain. Young people who are bullied see changes in various brain regions and it seems to impact male and female brains differently. Are these changes permanent? And is this cause to take bullying more seriously? The “very fabric of life on Earth is imperilled.” That's according to the latest annual State of the Climate report. Thirty-five “planetary vital signs” have been assessed by researchers and the outlook is bleak. But among all the worrying climate records we've broken there is hope. Hear from study author Tom Crowther of ETH Zurich. Hosts Rowan Hooper and Chelsea Whyte discuss with guests Leah Crane, Leah-Nani Alconcel, Michael Le Page, Alexandra Thompson, James Dinneen and Tom Crowther. To read more about these stories, visit https://www.newscientist.com/ Hosted on Acast. #216For the first time ever, a team has extracted RNA from an extinct animal. Thylacines, or Tasmanian tigers, are carnivorous marsupials that went extinct in the early 20th century. While we've been extracting DNA from extinct animals for years, getting their RNA has been much more difficult. What can this breakthrough tell us about the lives they led? What is consciousness and how does it work? There's a reason this is known as “the hard problem” of neuroscience. Everyone wants an answer but only a handful of convincing theories exist. And now, one of the more compelling theories - integrated information theory, or IIT - has come under fire. Are critics right to label it ‘pseudoscience'?Eris and Makemake are two dwarf planets that orbit in the Kuiper belt in the outer reaches of our solar system. They're small, icy objects that receive little sunlight, so we might expect them to be pretty boring – but it seems we were wrong. Why a closer look from the James Webb Space Telescope is painting an intriguing new picture, one that may include liquid water.Despite not having brains, Caribbean box jellyfish still have the capacity to learn. How are they processing the information without a centralised brain? One team thinks it could have something to do with their 24 eye-like structures. Find out how they tested this theory.Plus: A new kind of ‘reverse vaccine' that could help people with autoimmune diseases, the earliest evidence of human ancestors building wooden structures, and counting the number of cells in a human body. The last known Tasmanian tiger to be held in captivity was found dead at Hobart's Beaumaris zoo on 8th September, 1936. The critically endangered marsupial was accidentally locked out of its shelter overnight and succumbed to the frigid temperatures. With the animal's death, a species that had once roamed across Australia for thousands of years went out with a whisper.    In this episode, Arion, Rebecca and Olly discuss why 19th- and 20th-century Australians hunted Tasmanian tigers with such enthusiasm; explain why Thylacines had been in decline for about 3,500 years anyway; and look into how close scientists now are to bringing the “dog-headed pouched one” back from extinction…  Further Reading: ‘The history of the Thylacine' (The Zoological Society London, 2016): https://www.zsl.org/news-and-events/feature/history-of-the-thylacine  ‘Tasmanian tiger: Remains of last thylacine found in cupboard after 85 years' (BBC, 2022): https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-australia-63855426  ‘Last of their kind: Caring for the Tasmanian Tiger collection' (Museums Victoria; 2023): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ykb66UCOMOY&t=9s  ‘Tasmanian Tiger in Colour' (NFSA Films, 2022) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6gt0X-27GXM  #1930s #Nature #Australia #Sad  We'll be back on Monday - unless you join

Late last year, while on a trip to Naracoorte, South Australia, Palaeo Jam podcast host Michael Mills sat down with three students from the University of Adelaide, all at different stages as palaeontology students.   One, Stephanie Massacci, was just at the beginning of Honours, where the focus will be on seeking to clarify the taxonomy of the Pleistocene Tasmanian Devil, compared with the extinct giant Tasmanian Devil. The second, Isabella Donato, was at the end of Honours, in a project that explores the identification of skull bones in monitor lizards so that we know what species have lived here in the past. The third, Caitlin Mudge, was getting ready for PhD submission, through the Australian Centre for Ancient DNA on how species genetics relates to geographic location. The results of this research will help us understand the faunal landscape and historic diversity of several Australian mammal groups during the Holocene.   The wide ranging conversation touches on a number of topics relevant to palaeo students, along with each of their areas of study. They also discuss the idea of whether to reintroduce Tasmanian Devils back into mainland Australia, the merits of trying to bring back Thylacines and other extinct animals, and offer some sound advice to other students at different stages of their student life.   You can follow Caitlin on Twitter at @CaitlinMudge522 https://twitter.com/caitlinmudge522 Isabella on Twitter at @IzTheeScientist https://twitter.com/IzTheeScientist Michael on Twitter at @HeapsGood https://twitter.com/Heapsgood And Dinosaur University at @DinosaurUni https://twitter.com/DinosaurUni

Officially declared extinct in 1982 by the IUNC and the last known sighting in 1936, Thylacine's (Thylacinus cynocephalus) have been a subject for debate amongst Australian researchers for the last 50+ years. Neil Waters, owner and operator of the Thylacine Awareness Group of Australia (TAGOA) believes that he not only has seen a Thylacine, often referred to as Tasmanian Tigers, on more than one occasion, but he claims he currently has demonstrable evidence that the Tasmanian Tiger still roams Tasmania and parts of Australia to this day. This episode, I sit with Mr. Neil Waters, and we discuss why he believes academia and "scientists" are purposely attempting to cover up the existence of Thylacine's for profit. Neil's goal is to defeat the stigma of there not being any possible way that Tasmanian Tigers still exist with the help of TAGOA, and other eye-witnesses. Neil is no stranger to controversy, and he takes on the critics in this special episode of Unquestionable. Could Thylacine's still be prospering in Australia, Tasmania, or New Guinea? Let's find out! This creature exists now somewhere between relic and cryptid, as sightings continue and efforts to find "one last specimen" remain popular. It's image went through a complete overhaul, at one time feared and hunted by colonists who wanted to protect their sheep, yet now revered and domesticated through artwork and role-playing. Ahlstone talks about the extreme commodification of the species, from hunting bounties to gaffed specimens to logos and travel packages luring tourists to Tasmania. Along the way we learn about endlings, necrofauna, and what genetic projects might produce someday.

When Is It Time To Say Goodbye? Imagine you’re having a conversation with someone. You may get the sense that they have somewhere else to be. Or you might start feeling restless, and use an excuse to cut the conversation short. Sometimes, you feel like you could talk for HOURS. Chances are you’re wrong every time.  In a study published this week in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, Adam Mastroianni and colleagues tried to figure out how good humans are at judging the ideal length of a conversation. They found that both participants agreed a conversation ended at the right time in only 2% of their trials. And the difference between one partner’s desired conversation length and the actual length of a conversation could be as much as 50%—so in a 10 minute conversation, your partner might have wanted to talk to you for as little as 5 minutes, or as much as 15 minutes. SciFri’s Charles Bergquist talks with Mastroianni about these results, and why the “exit ramps” to a conversation are rarely where you want them to be. Talking Through The History Of Our Teeth Most of us have never thought much about why we have teeth. But if you’re the parent of a teething infant, the question becomes a whole lot more relevant: While you impatiently wait for baby’s teeth to poke through, or soothe your teething toddler in the middle of the night, you might find yourself wondering why humans go through all this trouble for a set of teeth that are only temporary. In a decade, your child will have shed their baby teeth to make room for their adult counterparts, and all this fuss will be but a distant—albeit painful—memory for both you and your former infant. But one such question can lead to another. Are baby and adult teeth made of the same stuff? Why can’t we just grow a new tooth if we lose one? And how did ancient people take care of their teeth? Biological anthropologist and ancient tooth expert Shara Bailey joins Ira to discuss why our teeth are the way they are.  A Look Back At The Time Of The Tasmanian Tiger Last week, conservation biologists on Twitter were all aflutter as rumors circulated that a creature called a “thylacine,” better known as a “Tasmanian tiger,” had been caught on camera in the Tasmanian bush. Thylacines have been considered extinct since the mid 80’s, but there are still those who believe—or hope—they still exist.  In a video posted to YouTube, Neil Waters, President of the Thylacine Awareness Group of Australia, shared the news of what he thought looked like images of two adult thylacines and a baby. Unfortunately, this time the animal caught on camera was identified as a pademelon. But at Science Friday, we’ll never pass up an opportunity to celebrate a charismatic creature. Last January, SciFri’s Elah Feder spoke with Neil Waters and Gregory Berns, a psychology professor at Emory University, about the fascinating history of the Tasmanian tiger.

In this episode, I cover the thylacine- Tasmania's most famous extinct animal. Were these animals killed off completely by humans, or were there other factors at play? Thylacines were the dominant carnivore within Tasmania until European settlers arrived and began to kill them to protect their sheep. But, were these animals killed off completely by humans, or were there other factors at play? Sources: https://besjournals.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/pdf/10.1111/1365-2656.12029https://web.archive.org/web/20090205080536/http://www.bio.usyd.edu.au/staff/swroe/Lost.pdfhttp://rw.thylacine.psu.edu/papers/johnson2003.pdfhttps://parks.tas.gov.au/discovery-and-learning/wildlife/tasmanian-tigerhttps://publications.rzsnsw.org.au/doi/pdf/10.7882/AZ.2012.008http://prism.scholarslab.org/prisms/25099fc8-a7f0-11e3-bbb5-e2ab703590ac/visualize?locale=enhttps://cosmosmagazine.com/biology/return-of-the-living-thylacinehttps://journals.plos.org/plosone/article?id=10.1371/journal.pone.0034877Dr. Michael Archer's TED Talk: https://www.ted.com/talks/michael_archer_how_we_ll_resurrect_the_gastric_brooding_frog_the_tasmanian_tiger?language=enAllison Reid's Interview from 1996: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MAGRCnZ4K10&feature=emb_logo

Tannis Davidson is the curator of the Grant Museum of Zoology and Comparative Anatomy at University College London. From unearthing the dismembered arms of mummies at archaeological digs in Egypt to searching for fossils in Beijing, Tannis has a rich history in researching and examining the stories of the once living. As one of the few people in the world who takes care of animals only once they've died, Tannis' work has her looking after 68,000 specimens. One of the museum’s many accolades is that it houses one of only seven existing quagga skeletons in the world - a type of zebra that is now extinct. Other specimens include biological tissue from the Tasmanian tiger, an elephant tusk with an antique bullet encased within it, a gorilla skeleton which was once photographed hugging H.G.Wells… and a jar of moles!
