To kick off 2024 with a bang, I'm joined by Walsh, of Thin Line Defense Co. If you haven't checked out one of their many reviews, TLDC is a group of guys from various backgrounds, who review, analyze, and critique products within our 2A industry. Anything ranging from nylon gear, to optics, to lights, and more - they will put it through their comprehensive evaluation process and provide consumers like you and I with both the good and bad behind it. This was a great discussion that actually ended up getting into some of the "behind the curtain" that comes with our industry. Additionally, we talked a good deal about shooting, developing skills through dry fire, the applications of various reticles at distances, and a whole lot more. It's a concept you may already be familiar with; and if you're not familiar with it, Workingoutloud.com Founder, John Stepper says "Working Out Loud is a way to build relationships that can help you in some way, like achieving a goal or exploring a new topic or skill. Instead of networking to get something, you invest in relationships by making contributions over time, including your work and experiences that you make visible." And here's something interesting about this episode: it's the first time I connected some of the core principles of TLDC to Working Out Loud. The Training, Learning, and Development Community is about exploring and sharing your journey in L&D, and our regular broadcasts and Slack conversations on TLDChat.us serve as a testament to that. Lost Whisky Distilleries of Scotland with Ken Rose on Irish Whiskey Review

We started this back in 2012/2013 with a archiving research team led by Prof. Moss from Glasgow university. Starting with the list of the 100+ closed distilleries we first needed to know which ones we could legally register. There's no point researching one if we can't do anything with it at the end. We then created a shorter list of distilleries which covered the regional differences of single malts. island, coastal, highland, lowland… The team then went to work researching these closed distilleries to see what information was still available in a variety of archives around Scotland. Old excise records were used to gain an understanding of the casks used. Drawings, photographs, newspaper articles, whisky books (eg Barnard), old letters, maps were all used to get an understanding of the distillation, grain, yeast, location, peat, heating, water. While doing all of this it was important to find out what the reputation of the whisky was. We wanted only distilleries which had a sterling reputation for making great whisky. An added benefit of the research was a trove of wonderful and often colourful stories of the people associated with the distilleries at the time. Such as Peter Dawson and Alexander Bonthrone. All the information is boiled down to create a very detailed profile of what the whisky should have tasted like originally. Then, as it's not possible for us to recreate a 1800's whisky exactly today. The team then theorises what the whisky would be like if they were still in operation today. A detailed profile of this modern day “homage” is then created. An expert blending team then has a rigorous (read heated argument) over which single malts need to be brought together to create this profile. In some instances secondary cask finishing is required to delivery the desired result. https://www.dropbox.com/s/vqb6y1t6vpfc13l/TLDC%20-%20Consumer%20Brochure%20-%20CLASSIC%20ONLY.pdf?dl=0 --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/irishwhiskeyreview/message

Episode Transcript: Joseph Suarez 0:01Welcome, everybody to the instructional Redesign podcast. This is our second part on our job seeker series. Last episode, I talked about the job seekers perspective. And today Cara is going to walk through the point of view of a hiring manager. It's a process that she just went through in her new role as a learning and development manager. So, Cara, why don't you talk about your experience? Cara North 0:25Okay, so I will tell you that, at least for me, I was probably as equally nervous as the job candidates, because I know what it's like kind of being on the other side of the interview process. So what I thought I would kind of demystify and talk about today, with the caveat of your mileage may vary, it's going to look different at different organizations. And I did go further into depth on this, I did also have a TLDC episode about it: Confessions of a Hiring Manager. So we'll share the link to that as well. I think that will Lisa's working on putting that up on YouTube. But before I even talk about the interview, let's talk a little bit about how you get to the interview. So as you all can imagine, and hopefully appreciate when we have positions open, at least at my org, and then I'm sure other orgs as well, we get a lot of interest, and we get a lot of resumes. So for this position, I was really excited about it, obviously, I'm still kind of new to the company, and I'm looking to start building my team. And so I was really excited. And I wanted to share it everywhere. So when the job posting went live, I shared it on my LinkedIn, my Twitter, and then my own personal Facebook. And let me just say, Joe, I was a little bit surprised by some of the stuff that happened when I did that. So Case in point, I got a lot of people sending me their resumes, asking me to apply to the job for them. I got some people who applied for the job and then said, Hey, now that I applied for the job, can I schedule my interview now, but probably hands down, the most surprising thing that happened is I actually tweeted something along the lines of you know, just because I'm connected with you on social media, it doesn't really entitle you to my time because I got inundated with just messages from people about I want to talk to you about this job. Blah, blah, blah. And it's not that I didn't want to talk to people, but it was just kind of the forcefulness and some people actually demanded my time. And so that's kind of where I drew a line. So I tweeted about that. And it got picked up by a recruiter group on Facebook, who basically roasted me and cut me down pretty hard. And so that was really, really eye opening. Joseph Suarez 3:01Yeah, you know, it's, it's tough right now for a lot of people and the job market is tight. And that means that people have to be doing some things to stand above the competition. But there's still a fine line between doing something that makes you stand out and behavior that kind of portrays yourself in a negative light as a job seeker, you're not really in a position to demand anything, and you come across too many as a very friendly person. But that doesn't give that person that perhaps is connected with you any more have a leg up than than anyone else,

We're living through a period of disconnect and disruption, and my personal honest take is that Community is something helping me get through it all. And although we are specifically discussing Professional Learning Communities in this episode, one thing we don't cover is formal communities like TLDC can become much more than just professional cohorts. So as Cara mentioned, I did a four part series on TLDC, around job seeking. And, you know, part of the reason I did this is because I went through a month long process in both 2019 and 2020, to find a job. And I was hoping the the 2019, one would have would have stuck a little longer. But unfortunately, I was only enrolled for five months. And they had to lay some of us off because of the financial impacts of the pandemic. So I found myself looking for a job again. And I realized that in that moment, that I was in a better position than most I had just gone through this, I felt very confident that I was going to be able to either find something, another full time job or be able to just start freelancing become full time self employed. But I knew others weren't in such a strong position. And I wanted to do something about that. And I figured I could share some some of what I know, with people. And ultimately, I landed on doing the TLDC series. So to start things off, I just want to look at things very big picture and just open with a very simple, I don't mean it to be condescending, but just ask the question, what is the job. And I think it's important to open with that, and understand that a job is basically a contract between two parties, an employer and an employee. So the employee agrees to perform some specified tasks or duties for the employer. And in return, the employee is given some compensation. And this is a contract that can be ended by either party at any time, obviously, the employer can can quit and leave the role, the employer can let the person go. And as long as they're following the laws and regulations in whatever locality they're in, that's perfectly fine. Obviously, what happened to me was, I was let go during the pandemic, and part one of my series was just talking about my experience, but also what others can do, if they suspect they might be about to go through the same thing, and what are the warning signs to see if perhaps they're about to be laid off. Also, I gave some advice for people for what they can do during the layoff, which controlling their emotions and listening for key details that the HR representative or the manager that's letting the person go would would give out,

It almost felt a little awkward doing a Member Showcase with Cara North --- she's been a big part of TLDC for so long and I wasn't sure my questions would be engaging enough. But it just goes to show, all of our stories are so layered and interesting, that even the simplest of questions can still reveal much. There is a good portion of TLDC that only exists because of Cara's support, and many of you know about her generosity and how she leads. For those of you that don't, give this episode a listen. And she and Toddi had an excellent, wide-ranging conversation about education, especially in STEAM programming, the science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics education initiatives for children. This episode was a change of pace for TLDC, but it was a joy to listen to two educators essentially geeking out over science and technology topics for kids AND adults. The rules have changed since the pandemic began and we're not as critical about our on-screen personas as we used to be. With Zoom meetings being the norm, we're all getting PRACTICE talking via webcam - and that's the key: practice. We also talked about chat etiquette in formats like our TLDCasts. How about in military or government settings? Non-profits? So in this episode, we have Randy Rebman and Toddi Norum discussing mentoring and coaching. Both of them have backgrounds where they've experienced mentoring in the military or government settings - and now both have moved on to either higher ed or corporate environments, and can discuss the differences.
