Let's be honest. When you hear “LinkedIn,” your first thought might be that it's just for job seekers, corporate professionals, or people in industries that don't reflect your own. Maybe you've avoided it because it feels stiff, too polished, or like a space where you have to shrink who you are just to fit in. But here's what most folks miss: LinkedIn is one of the most powerful tools for building relationships, increasing visibility, and growing your business. If you're not using it with intention, you're likely missing out on real opportunities. In this episode, we sit down with Larry Long Jr., also known as “LinkedIn Larry,” to break down exactly how to make LinkedIn work for you. Larry is the Chief Energy Officer of LLJR Enterprises and a top LinkedIn influencer who has built a thriving brand by showing up as his full, authentic self. He shares step-by-step strategies for optimizing your profile, creating content that connects, and turning conversations into meaningful business relationships—without watering down your personality or playing small.   DURING THIS EPISODE YOU'LL LEARN: Why LinkedIn is still one of the most powerful yet overlooked tools for entrepreneurs How to build a profile that reflects your value and draws the right opportunities Simple content ideas to help you show up consistently, even if you're not sure what to post How to move from connection requests to meaningful conversations and collaborations The smart way to ask for recommendations that boost your credibility and reach What it means to stay visible and top-of-mind without feeling like you're constantly selling   Don't miss out on the resources mentioned in this episode by checking out the show notes at blacktobusiness.com/253   Thank you so much for listening! Leave your commentIn Episode 136 of Mastering Modern Selling, Brandon Lee, Tom Burton, and Carson Heady welcome back a show favorite Larry Long Jr, CEO and Chief Energy Officer of LLJR Enterprises. Larry doesn't hold back. With a mix of energy, humor, and real talk, he calls on sellers and leaders to ditch outdated habits and build something that actually works today. This episode hits hard on what it really takes to stand out in a world that's constantly moving: owning your calendar, taking daily reps, and showing up with intention. Larry's philosophy is simple: get clear on your purpose, stay committed, and don't wait around for perfect conditions.Sales Has Changed, Stop Acting Like It Hasn't “There's still dinosaurs out there, but they're extinct.” Larry doesn't mince words. If you're still relying on tactics from 2014, you're behind. Making 1,000 calls a day hoping something lands isn't a strategy, it's noise. Buyers have changed, and sellers need to catch up.Forget ‘Safe', Start Being Seen “Your content is not creating trust.” That was Brandon's mic drop, and Larry doubled down. Polished, lifeless messaging isn't helping anyone. The people you're trying to reach want something real. Share your story, talk about your journey, and be someone worth believing in.Worry Isn't the Problem, Inaction Is Larry says it straight: a little worry is healthy if it gets you moving. But if you're stuck worrying without action, that's on you. It's not about being flashy, it's about doing the work. “Let me see your calendar. Who are you meeting? What are you learning?”Success Comes from Reps, Not Excuses “You've got to get the reps in.” Larry's sports background shines through as he reminds us that success isn't random. It's about repetition, accountability, and small steps done daily. Want results? Stop hoping and start practicing. The JOLT Effect – Jump On Life Today Larry's signature mindset is captured in one word: JOLT - Jump On Life Today. Why? Because waiting is a trap. “Tomorrow is not promised.” Whether it's getting healthy for your family or building a sales rhythm that works, it starts with taking real action now. This episode is a wake-up call for every seller who's coasting or playing it safe. Larry reminds us: the path to being unstoppable starts with ownership. Don't wait for motivation. Don't wait for the market to shift. Build your discipline. Practice with purpose. And show up differently every single day. Don't miss out—your next big idea could be just one episode away! But amidst all this striving, have you paused to wonder, "What does success truly mean for me?" In our latest episode, we unpack the idea of success and explore whether it's something you perpetually chase or can actually experience right now. I'm thrilled to have the incredible Melonie Taylor join us. Melonie is the Chief Energy Officer of Virtual Angels by Success on Purpose and a success mentor for burnt out, empathetic high achievers. She's here to share her journey and insights on redefining success in your life. Here's what you'll discover in this episode: Why your idea of success might be setting you on a path to burnout—and how Melonie realized she needed to change her own path. What are the crucial steps Melonie took to move from feeling unfulfilled despite her achievements to living a life abundant with purpose and joy. How the simple act of breathing can help you access a calmer state of being, rewiring your nervous system for a more balanced life. What's the secret to distinguishing between true intuition and those sneaky ideas that might actually be holding you back? Why writing your own eulogy could be the unexpected exercise that brings clarity to your life's true priorities. Don't miss out on Melonie's inspiring story and practical tips that could guide you to a fuller, more satisfying version of success. Tune in to challenge your own perceptions and take a step towards fulfilling your true purpose today. About our guest: Melonie Taylor is the Chief Energy Officer of Virtual Angels by Success on Purpose and a Success Mentor for burnt-out, empathic high achievers struggling with anxiety and depression. She helps them rewire their nervous systems for abundance and joy. Her journey began with a profound question: “What is the purpose of life?” While working as a palliative care nurse for 18 years, supporting people in their final moments, Melonie found herself battling depression, anxiety, and a deep sense of unfulfillment. Though she was making a difference for others, she didn't know how to change her own life. Ignoring the universe's warning signs—stress, burnout, and emptiness—led to a breaking point. A fractured wrist became the catalyst for surrendering her ego to her Higher Self. This turning point ignited a journey of self-love, teaching her to embrace being instead of just doing. Now, through Virtual Angels and Success on Purpose Mentoring, Melonie is dedicated to preventing and healing disease by guiding others to rediscover joy and purpose. She empowers high achievers to shift from burnout to balance, creating lives filled with meaning, fulfillment, and true success. In today's episode, I'm sharing my conversation with CPA and HR Professional Dot Rock of Dot Rock Consulting.  I started following Dot's work a couple years ago and knew right away that I would one day collaborate with her.  She embodies what she preaches, leading by example and challenging us all change our relationship with support, hiring, and receiving. I attended a workshop of hers recently about hiring a Chief Energy Officer. We're all about Energy here on the podcast, and so I'm excited to share this concept with you, Dot's practical approach, and her powerful personal story.   Dot is the CEO & Founder of Dot Rock Consulting - a holistic HR consulting company that focuses on helping entrepreneurs lean into the art of receiving support and putting on their oxygen masks first. She helps them start first with scaling their personal lives and outsourcing home stuff, and then she helps them take their business to the next level by scaling and right-sizing their companies.  With one life to live, it is too short to not learn to allow ourselves to receive and delegate. Suzy currently serves as the ninth President, CEO & Chief Champion of Walsh College in Troy, Michigan.  Suzy's academic and professional background blends her passions for business, law, and higher education, focusing on the value and importance of business and technology education in today's rapidly changing world. A licensed attorney and member of the State Bar of Michigan, she holds a bachelor's degree, a master of business administration, a juris doctor, and a doctorate in higher education leadership and management.. She is also the author of: The THRIVE Journal: A Step-by-step guide to help you create and accomplish your goals (2021), and Locus: Take control and change the direction of your life (2022). In this episode, Suzy shares her favorite mistake story about an email she sent when in a leadership role with a previous college. Why was the feedback about the email a “gut punch”? What did she learn and how did she adjust her communication style after that? What is “styleflexing” and why is that an important strategy? We also discuss her book, Chief Energy Officer, and why “leadership energy” is so important. How does a “chief energy officer” help others? Does that have to be the CEO's role? Questions and Topics: How do we make sure we're learning from mistakes? Without feedback, we can't learn? Ask permission to share more? There's a time and a place for giving feedback? Sandwich it? What is “leadership energy” and why is that so important? HeartMath.org Energy in terms of positivity (we can do it) vs. skepticism or cynicism? How a “chief energy officer” helps others? Does that have to be the CEO's role? Staying immune to perks and praise Tell us a little more about Walsh College… who's a great fit? Subscribe, Follow, Support, Rate, and Review! Are you ready to tap into your unique leadership values and overcome hidden blind spots? Join host Natalie Benamou and Velma Knowles, Chief Energy Officer, leadership coach, human behavioral expert and best-selling author of the book ‘The Valuable Leader' as they talk about how you can leverage your strengths. This interview reveals all the ways you can accelerate your success by understanding your values.5 Ways To Recognize Your Leadership Blind Spots1. Use Self-Awareness and Self-Reflection: The first step in discovering our blind spots is to develop a deep understanding of ourselves. This includes recognizing our strengths, understanding how we show up in different situations, and how others perceive ourselves. 2. Value Your Strengths: Often, we tend to dismiss our strengths because they come naturally to us. Velma emphasizes the importance of recognizing and valuing these strengths. By understanding our unique value, we can increase our confidence and usefulness, thereby becoming more valuable leaders. 3. Find Your Courage and Authenticity: Discover how courage is not an inherent quality, but something we can cultivate through action. Stepping into courage can mean borrowing a belief in ourselves from others until we develop our own. Authenticity is also critically important; people want to know the real you, not just the professional facade. 4. Use Continuous Learning: By continuously seeking self-improvement and development, we can start to uncover our blind spots and work on them. Remember, each one of us has blind spots, but it's through the process of self-awareness, courage, and authenticity that we can uncover and address them. As Velma puts it, "forget everything and rise" above these blind spots to uncover the leader within you.5. Taking Action:The process of uncovering and addressing our blindspots requires us to take action. This could be as simple as asking for feedback or as challenging as stepping out of our comfort zones to do something that scares us. Four Favorite Quotes:"I really believe that if you're not learning, you're not growing, and the more you know about yourself, the more you can impact and be of value to others." - Velma Knowles "Courage happens as you do it. You find courage in whatever challenge, whatever difficulty is." - Velma Knowles"People just want to know you. We are all based on emotion and the emotion is what moves people. Authenticity is key in leadership." - Velma Knowles "I do something every day that scares me, following the advice of Eleanor Roosevelt"-Natalie BenamouDon't miss this episode to hear about the the importance of recognizing blind spots, cultivating courage, and embracing your authenticity. Today, as the founder of Steer LLC, he specializes in assisting small to mid-sized businesses and nonprofits in building better leaders, strategies, and approaches to optimize their organizations. With a strong background in law and business, Chris brings a unique blend of experience and insight to his coaching, enabling him to connect with clients on a personal level while guiding them towards lasting success.“So the meaning of life is to find your gift, the purpose of life to give it away.”“Some of the things that drive entrepreneurs to be successful are the same things that you have to be mindful of for your own mental health.”Adversities Chris had to overcome:· Coping with mental and emotional challenges on a personal level· How his entrepreneurial decisions had affected his and his family's well-being (developed anxiety)· Being not prepared for emotional turmoil during his athletic daysAbundance Chris created:· Passing Series, 7, 63 and 65 licensure examinations· Was able to practice law as well· Started or partnered with several startup companies for several years· How he changed his mindset towards goals and lifeLessons from Chris' adversities· Serving others and developing leadership and the impact of it through sports· Being mindful of other people's feelings both in personal and professional relationships Mental Health and EntrepreneurshipThe mental well-being of entrepreneurs is essential for sustained success and personal balance. The stress and pressure associated with starting and managing a business can take a toll on mental health, and acknowledging these struggles is of the utmost importance. Being open about these challenges and seeking support is necessary for managing mental health while leading a successful entrepreneurial career. During the podcast, Chris Steer bravely shared his own mental health struggles, including his experience with depression and anxiety during the COVID-19 pandemic. His openness highlights the importance of breaking the stigma associated with mental health issues in the business world, and he encouraged leaders to be both strong and vulnerable. Steer's willingness to share his experiences serves as a reminder that even successful entrepreneurs can face mental health challenges, and acknowledging and addressing these struggles is essential for maintaining a balanced life.Overcoming AdversityPerseverance in entrepreneurship often means overcoming adversity along the journey. Challenges are inevitable, but facing them head-on and learning from these experiences can foster resilience and personal growth. The ability to adapt and find creative solutions in the face of setbacks allows individuals to emerge stronger and better prepared for future obstacles. Thus, embracing adversity is a crucial aspect of entrepreneurship and personal development. Chris Steer's story is a prime example of overcoming adversity through perseverance. He shared his experience as a Division 1 lacrosse player at Johns Hopkins, where he initially faced disappointment and struggled to manage his ego. However, instead of letting these challenges deter him, he employed a strategy of outworking everyone else, ultimately becoming the team captain and gaining valuable leadership skills. His journey demonstrates that embracing adversity and remaining resilient can lead to meaningful personal growth and lasting success.Building BoundariesEstablishing boundaries is vital for entrepreneurs to find balance and maintain mental health in their professional and personal lives. By setting clear expectations and limitations, individuals can focus on their priorities and create space for personal development and growth. In addition, setting boundaries with oneself and others can lead to more productive and fulfilling relationships, as it allows for greater mutual respect and understanding. Chris Steer highlighted the need for setting boundaries in his coaching approach, focusing on the emotional and mental well-being of leaders. The boundaries he sets with clients promote a sense of purpose and self-awareness, ensuring that they have the necessary tools to navigate challenges and maintain good mental health. By emphasizing the importance of boundaries, Steer underscores the need for entrepreneurs to maintain balance, invest in personal growth, and prioritize their well-being.Books and Resources-- Ego is the Enemy-- The Obstacle Is the Way: The Timeless Art of Turning Trials into Triumph-- Shoe Dog: A Memoir by the Creator of Nike-- Zero to One: Notes on Startups, or How to Build the FutureConnect with Chris Steer:WEBSITE: https://www.steerllc.com/LINKEDIN: https://www.linkedin.com/in/christophersteer/FACEBOOK: https://www.facebook.com/steerllcYOUTUBE: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCthEnrkMOPIP6Go1_4A5rAQ Connect with usWEBSITE: https://www.adversity2abundance.comLeave us a rating or review: https://www.adversity2abundance.com/reviews/new/ or hereGot comments, feedback or suggestions? Despite facing a formidable opponent, the Cyclones limited Baylor's shooting percentage to 35.8% from the field and 35.7% from beyond the arc. Utilizing all 11 players on their bench, each Cyclone made significant contributions, including walk-on Conrad Hawley, known as the team's Chief Energy Officer. Jaren Holmes scored a team-high 16 points, Gabe Kalscheur made crucial shots during a decisive 11-0 run, and Tre King dominated the painted area with 12 points and seven rebounds. Iowa State's interior passing, led by King, Robert Jones, and Demarion Watson, helped them win the points in the paint battle 36-14. Watson's exceptional performance in just 17 minutes of play showed his potential as an elite-level defender and an excellent passer. Despite the odds stacked against them, the Cyclones responded to the challenge and showed grit and determination throughout the game, leading for over 35 minutes.
