In the second and final installment of our interview, Chuck Bown remembers winning the 1990 Busch Series championship, as well as the lengths to which NASCAR went to make sure the title was on the up and up. Chuck then moved to Winston Cup with Bobby Allison in 1994 but experienced a terrible accident at Pocono that left him with impaired vision for the next several months. He pulled himself from the car while recovering, and subsequently fought the perception that he was damaged goods. We'll then take a look at the August 16, 1990 issue of Winston Cup Scene. Ricky Rudd wins at Watkins Glen, just ahead of a battle for second place between the brothers Bodine … Geoff and Brett. Sterling Marlin and team owner Billy Hagan are mad at Tommy Kendall after the race. Mark Martin finishes fifth on a weekend that began with a VICIOUS accident during practice that also involved Dick Trickle and Troy Beebe. Crew members are injured for the second race in a row. There's an ad for an international driver search that eventually became the Richard Petty Driving Experience. Kim Wood Hall and her husband Terry celebrate Christmas all year long. Also … Chuck Bown wins his sixth and final Busch Series race of 1990. Junior Johnson employees/lawyers file a protest in a garage-area cooking competition and … finally … a commentary foreshadows Rajah Carruth's truck win this weekend at Las Vegas. Like many successful car racers, Justin Bell nurtured and developed his passion for speed and competitive racing at an early age. With natural talent and the encouragement of his father Derek Bell, a five-time Le Mans 24 hours winner, he started out fast and got faster, and soon began carving his own place in history. Since beginning his career in 1988, Justin has achieved many significant racing accomplishments, including the 1997 FIA GT2 Championship, winning the 24 Hours of Le Mans GT2 class in 1998 and second-place finishes in Le Mans and Daytona, and a pair of SCCA Trans-Am wins. Along the way he raced for major car manufacturers including Saab, Peugeot, Porsche, BMW, Dodge and General Motors. For Dodge Viper, he won the 1997 FIA GT2 world championship and the GT2 class at Le Mans in 1998. In 2000 Justin signed with General Motors as a driver for the factory Corvette Racing team, finishing second in the Daytona 24 Hours, the 24 Hours of Le Mans and Petit Le Mans. Justin co-founded Torque Media Group in 2018 with Tommy Kendall and Jason Jacobson. Breaking with the traditional TV model the trio created The Torque Show as a branded Livestream Show to support Michelin in the IMSA Series. Evolving into a vibrant chat show style format, JB and TK interview the highest profile people in the Sportscar world, attracting a huge audience on their Facebook Live channel. Another series integrated into The Torque Show is 'The Love of Cars' presented by Hagerty, which has seen guests such as Jay Leno, Patrick Dempsey and Danny Trejo. Drawing on their vast experience in Live sports broadcasting, and led by the producing talents of Jason Jacobson, the company branched out into live event hosting with the Audrain Newport Concours and Motorweek and the incredibly prestigious honor of hosting and producing the livestream for the Pebble beach Concours d'Elegance in 2021. After all this, Justin still felt like something was still missing. The medium to express himself and the world as he saw it. But when he saw a Hasselblad medium format camera he knew he had found it! Learning the craft was fun and frustrating and led him to the world of Leica cameras, where he really found his footing. He likes to focus on portraits of the men and women who inspire him in the world of speed. He is not a technical photographer (although he is learning all the time) but he thinks because of his skills as an interviewer, people open up to him and he simply transition that trust and access into the images you see on his Life. with Legends website. Life. With Legends is an intimate collection of his conversations with fascinating people that arguably are legends in the world of racing, cars and speed. These portraits are all taken at the time of the recordings and are unique to the shared moments between artist and subject.
Well, I had to make this one happen, didn't I?TK is truly one of the best humans that I know and for so many reasons.Obviously his racing record is outstanding: While in college he cleaned up in the IMSA GTU category winning the Championship twice. Then into SCCA Trans Am where he became part of the folklore of that great American racing series during the 90's, scoring four championships! NASCAR came calling and he showed huge promise, especially on the road courses, and for sure a long a profitable career was on the horizon. Then came a life changing crash at Watkins Glen in 1991 which left his legs shattered. TK made a stoic recovery and would race again, but the momentum was lost. Experiencing a kind of re-birth a more rounded man found his niche in front of the TV cameras and TK quickly became a fan favorite. Now it goes without saying that the highlight of his career was starting the Torque Show with Jason and myself, but in all seriousness, getting to know the new and improved mature Tommy Kendall has been one of the delights of my adult life. He is a gracious, generous, intelligent man that brings insight to any subject. Proving that life has many phases, TK is embracing his latest, and I am very proud to call him my friend. I hope you enjoy the conversation!JB

During the 2022 Acura Grand Prix of Long Beach, there was more than just racing action on the track. On Saturday of race weekend, the “Racing Goes Safer, Driver Safety Seminar” was held in the Long Beach Convention Center. This almost annual (not held during COVID) seminar is hosted by the Stand 21 Safety Foundation. This year, a video featuring Romain Grosjean kicked off the meeting, and then special guest and racing champion, Tommy Kendall, was invited to not only speak about what he went through in his horrific crash at Watkins Glen, but also to MC a very special announcement during the seminar. The announcement was the 2023 class of inductees into the Motorsports Hall of Fame of America (MSHF). This Hall of Fame is very unique in that it represents all forms of motorsports from cars to bikes to planes to boats. Two of the inductees (doctors Terry Trammel and Stephen Olvey) have been instrumental in racing safety and helping Indy car drivers in particular. I was able to get a short interview here with the president of the MSHF, George Levy. A true gentleman and passionate supporter of all forms of motorsport, the interview left us wanting to visit the MSHF museum and speak with him again. As it turns out, we were able to do that (Part 2 next week). Here's a short interview that will give you an overview of the MSHF and also some of the inductees for the class of 2023. Enjoy! NOTE: In Part 2, we'll have a personal tour of the MSHF and also some nice photos from the fabulous facility. In the meantime, for more information on the MSHF and the 2023 inductees, please visit: www.mshf.com. By Larry Mason Copyright © 2022 Larry Mason
When the history books are written, one name will stand out amongst the greatest SCCA Trans Am drivers of all time – Tommy Kendall. Moreover, he's had success in a number of different categories of race cars during his career and has raced with and against some of the greatest names in racing history. His comeback from massive lower extremity injuries suffered at Watkins Glen Raceway in June of 1991 proved his desire and determination to succeed no matter what. He won multiple championships after that shunt. Now retired (for the most part) from racing, he parlays his knowledge behind the microphone and in front of the camera to the delight of legions of racing fans. After his duties as an MC during the “Racing Goes Safer, Driver Safety Seminar” hosted by the Stand 21 Safety Foundation at the 2022 Acura Grand Prix of Long Beach, we had a chance to catch up with Tommy and hear some incredible stories from his racing career. Enjoy! By Larry Mason Copyright © 2022 Larry Mason

I'm a television producer. I came up in the world of Motorsports working for NASCAR and I was with them for about five years, three seasons on the road with the IMSA WeatherTech Sportscar Championship. I've got two sports Emmy wins for the 100,000 cameras documentary series. I like to cook I'm pretty good at barbecue. You know, maybe that's what you think is most interesting because you're not interested at all at cars, which would be ironic. 0:46 I went to the Goodwood Festival of Speed 2018. I went to rennsport with Porsche, Porsche and rennsport with Michelin and then also went to the mall with Michelin. And then I did a year of a show called THE TORQUE SHOW with Justin Bell and Tommy Kendall. 1:40 the number one thing right now is the documentary that we just put out. I produced my first feature length documentary last year, it was about cars and car culture, It's called BEST IN CLASS, the making of a concour d'Elegance. And it's available on any digital video or content rental platform, it's available for rent, I think it's 10 to buy it. It's a great story. 3:33 the audrain Automobile Museum in Newport, Rhode Island. (where film was made) 8:17 Speaking of millennials, I actually have a millennial anti theft device in my Honda Accord sport. yeah, I was in not just the French guy who raised Ricky Bobby. 9:03 I was wanting to be a chef owner. And I was working through the restaurant industry. 11:18 nobodies. In fact. I mean, there I worked for a chef in Orlando, that my paycheck stopped cashing. 14:44 Valencia Community College had an incredible film program, I had to make a reel to present as part of my application. 19:04 I had taken a job shooting nightclubs, I was shooting like family photos. I was shooting wedding videos, I stumbled upon the opportunity to do West Walker's wedding video and Aspen which was a felt like a really big deal at the time. And I mean, it's a celebrity thing, whatever it was, but it was still a wedding video. 26:09 You know, you've honored and mentioned your dad and mom a number of times in this video, which just makes me love you more. 26:57 I remember Ferrari and Range Rover and Land Rover and then Bentley you had that big release party with the Continental GT. So you were very much in the luxury and sports car game. What I do remember specifically is maybe like once a month or so here comes a Ferrari 360 Modena and Jeff's like, hey, let's go for a ride. 28:44 my mom and I came over to the dealership and you took us for a ride on the the Range Rover proving ground. 30:34 What are these Porsches? Oh, those are GT3 cup cars.... 31:06I Brett: "...I watch Formula One IndyCar NASCAR lower series, NASCAR dirt track modifieds. I go to my local short track here in Tampa, I really don't think that there's anything that beats the competition of sports car racing. So as a racing fan, and as a producer working on that series...you look at the Ferrari 488 GTLM car, the full factory spec racecar, and you go that is the sexiest thing I have ever seen. How do people not want to watch this? it's gonna go out and bang doors with a Porsche 911 RSR. 33:42 Jeff talks about NASCAR with the actual cars that you drove on Monday. 35:08 Jeff talks about selling "used" Ferraris into the Tampa Bay market that may have had an impact on Ferrari opening a dealrership there. 38:49 Brett: "...did a lot of work with Michelin... went to the Goodwood Festival of Speed... went to Rennsport with... Porsche and rennsport... LeMans with Michelin...I did a show called THE TORQUE SHOW with Justin Bell and Tommy Kendall 39:28 Brett goes into what goes into being a TV producer. 42:21 Brett talks about BEST IN CLASS and the concour world. 44:41 Brett talks about why people are into cars. 45:31 Brett on places/events like: Monterey, Big Sur,Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca, Audrain Museum. Casa Ferrari. Rennsport. LeMans, World Endurance Championship , NASCAR. 52:54 What's in Brett's garage? 55:00 regarding manual trannys 57:00 Brett on some new cars available now. 1:02:03 I've met a lot of people through the sport. Tommy Kendall, Mark Martin, Justin Bell, Jay Leno 1:16:36 Brett's dream car: 82 or a 90 air cooled Targa top 911 like an SC 1:18:49 On being scared of Andy Ramker

Race car driver Tommy Kendall joins Spike and Zuckerman to talk about the legendary Chicken Car, the exploded carcass of a famed movie trans-am, modifications, and they take listener questions!
Gary Summerfield started in the business in the early sixties pumping gas and doing general service station work. He opened his own service station in 1975 and received training from Shell, Sunoco, and Exxon. Gary built his first garage in1990 and opened a second location in 1993 and his third in 1998, the fourth in 2002 and built a replacement facility Waxhaw in 2013. Gary also had a large towing service from 1979 and grew it to 14 units. He closed it in 1999 sold the equipment and focused on the repair business. He credits his success to attending training classes and required employees to attend also His business grew to 6 million dollars in total sales per year. Gary was to sell two locations with an offer he could not refuse. He also sold his Hybrid shop and repair and another location to his general manager and the fourth location to a towing service. He is now a landlord but is considering building a new location for my youngest son and helping him run it. Don Griffin started building transmissions in 1980 at a dealership. he left there in a year and worked interdependently for two years, then went back to a dealer. In 1983, he went to another independent shop until 1992 when he decided he wanted to rebuild transmissions his way and wanted to do European and Asian units. He taught himself the electronics on those units when other shops didn’t want to bother with them. He made himself a name that he could fix anything foreign or domestic. His time in the shop was from 1992 until 2016. He had built a building in 1999 and still have that leased out. He was the one that can safely say he did it his way. Tommy Kendal was born in Columbus County in 1939. He moved to Cumberland County in 1944. He lived on a farm and worked at a dairy until 1958 when he graduated from high school. He went to Danville Technical Institute for a 2-year auto mechanics course and in 1960, he graduated and went to work at H&L Auto as a mechanic. During 1978, he took and passed all 8 ASE certification tests and received their Master Automobile Technician certificate. While in 1990, he moved up to management and during 1995, he passed the L1 Advanced Level test. He still enjoys working on cars. He really enjoys that more than management. Key Talking Points: Retired shop owner regrets Running every aspect of the business yourself. Not planning ahead for a succession plan. The legacy they’re leaving behind The mindset that customers enable you to pay your bills and feed your family- need to always go above and beyond for them. Take pride in what you do. Still helping shops Information source- parts and vendors. Business advice- margins, bottom line. Reminder for constant training. Technician pay Cannot have the stereotypical mindset that entry-level techs live at home without spouse or children. Entry level 50-75K salary- entry level need to have an understanding of electronics, shop owner needs to charge to compensate. Important to hire the techs that are passionate about the industry.
