POPULARITY
This week we talk about our favorite toys from the 80's, the album Verities and Balderdash by Harry Chapin and the movie 31.
There are vanities and there are verities. There are fancies and there are facts. There are passing things and there are enduring things. There are bursting bubbles and there are lasting beauties. Giving full rein to the force of the apostle's language, Spurgeon assesses what it means not to look at, to mark, to heed, to consider, the things which can only be seen, which are passing away, whether present joys or sorrows. His language digs in quite fiercely, pressing us to ask how much significance we attach to that which is passing away. Then he turns to the things which cannot now be seen, but which are spiritually substantial, the eternal glories which “gleam afar to nerve our faint endeavour.” Spurgeon says these need to be grasped by faith as we meditate upon them. They must be considered with delight by God's people, to stir our affections and appetites (though considered with horror by the unconverted, so that they might be turned to Christ before all their delights are ruined forever). They must be dwelt upon with hope, so that we live truly as heirs of God, joint-heirs with Christ, inheritors together with the saints in light. The striking contrast of the text comes out in the emphatic way in which Spurgeon holds before us the emptiness of a passing world, and the fulness of joy in the world which is to come. The talk aims at a clear presentation of some basic Baha'i teachings as set forth by Shoghi Effendi in his various writings. The central issue is the relativity of religious truth and the progressive character of Divine Revelation. I will then explain something about the position and station of the Manifestations of God throughout the ages and in this Day. Mr Hooper Dunbar has been a Baha'i since 1956 in his youth. Served in a number of capacities on Baha'i institutions. Well known as a Baha'i speaker. To view the video visit the YouTube channel https://youtu.be/WTliR_wOwus

Sneak Peek into forthcoming book “The Bonfire of the Verities” Pathologies of Public Policy Decision-Making and How to Fix Them. About the Book: Recent times in America are scarred by rampant public policy failures, leading to catastrophic involvements in Iraq and Afghanistan, and the 2008 financial crash. More are coming. Why do highly intelligent leaders, with degrees from the world's greatest universities, with equally intelligent and skilled staffs and with limitless research and intelligence budgets, continue to make catastrophic decisions–even while warned in advance of catastrophes to come? And what can actually be done to stop this sickness? This presentation, summarizing the forthcoming book's analysis, draws lessons from America's Vietnam experience and its involvement in the Middle East, from an innovative form of economic analysis, and from case studies of what has failed–and worked–in the areas of anti-corruption and anti-spam programs. The steps it proposes–the verities–offer a decision-making alternative which overcomes the current squishiness of political and economic discussions in which “there are no wrong answers and nothing is ever concluded.” About the Speaker: Jeffrey Race has an AB, AM, and PhD in Government from Harvard and began this project while an Ash Fellow of the Kennedy School. He has taught political science and economics, and is the author of the War Comes to Long An, a highly original case study of human motivation in the Vietnam War which Amazon lists as one of the top ten military theory studies of all time. In a parallel engineering career Race is a Life Senior Member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers and in this talk brings to bear on the pathologies of public policy making the insights of hard science.

Low expectations may have helped, but all three Verities enjoyed this ep to varying degrees. Join Deb, Erika, and Katrina as we talk about what we liked and, of course, the few things we didn't. There was some definite "iffy" territory to cover as well. What did you think of "Empress of Mars"? Was it rollicking, fanservicey fun? Did it make you uncomfortable from a representational perspective? Possibly both? Does the title need a definitive article? Because of the emotional ups and (mostly downs) of the last week in the world, the Verities did not have it in them to do a podcast--about love or anything else. Instead, we're releasing our first re-run. Join Deb and Erika as we give a short intro explaining why we've chosen to re-release this particular episode. At this time in history, we feel it's really important. The conversation Deb talks about in the intro starts at 49:12, so feel free to skip to that if you only want to hear the truly relevant bit. We hope you enjoy! As always, comments are welcome--especially messages of hope, perseverance, and love. ^E As published July 16, 2014 This week we do lots of talking about villains who don’t. Join Deb, Erika, Lynne, and Tansy as we discuss what makes silent villains so creepy and effective. We also discover just how many Moffat-baddies are non-talkers (or mostly non-talkers). And do stick around for a particularly interesting tangent about gender roles and power dynamics in communication. This Verity! ep gets positively analytical! Almost scholarly! Almost. And of course, let us know who your favorite quiet killers are–or weigh in on the deeper debate about communication in general. Or both! ^E Also covered: ALL the verities are over the moon about the release of Liz’s Big Finish debut: Breaking Bubbles and Other Stories! And can Erika hang on to her title of the “The Trivia Lord”? ^D
It's another bookish Extra! Join Deb, Erika, Lynne, and Tansy as we look at another first. This time it's Russell T Davies' first published Doctor Who work, his New Adventures novel Damaged Goods. This is another very grown-up-themed tome, and the Verities react as such. Some really enjoy it, others not as much. But as always, it's a great discussion! (Though we do, necessarily, venture into some rather adult territory in the course of the discussion, so sensitive/young listeners may want to beware.) Have you read this one? It's a book Extra! Join Deb, Erika, Liz, and Tansy as they discuss the very first Virgin New Adventures novel, Timewyrm: Genesys. It was the first time through for half of us, the other half of the Verities were revisiting it. While it may not be everyone's cup of tea, and may have a seriously high "ick factor", we're all pleased with the existence of the whole novel range. And we spend a good amount of time chatting about that as well. Are you a fan of the NAs? Have you revisited them and discovered issues you didn't see the first time through? We are all over the map this week! Join Deb, Erika, Katrina, and Liz as we discuss all sorts of interesting Doctor Who goodness. First, we dump our "happy thing" segment and break our no-news rule because the announcement of a new companion is a Big Deal! We're excited about having a new face in the TARDIS, but the level of excitement varies wildly between Verities. Next, we continue our run through classic season 1 with "The Edge of Destruction". It's a fascinating set piece that delves into the characters of our first TARDIS team in a spooky and often disturbing way. Chillingly delightful! Finally, we touch on our first missing story, "Marco Polo". There are oodles of ways to consume this one, and we all did it differently. We compare various methods and talk about the story itself. Opinions vary on this one even more than they do on the new companion. Oh, and in addition to all that, we're doing another Verity! GIVEAWAY! After last week's delightful interview with Katy Manning, we thought it a perfect time to cover Jo Grant's first outing. Join Deb, Katrina, Liz, Lynne, and Tansy as they discuss"Terror of the Autons", which was not only Jo's first story, but the Master's, as well as what many call the first real "UNIT family" story. Some even argue it's the genesis of a budding romance between the Master and the Doctor... Tansy is on Valium, Liz forgets her intro, and Kat gets to talk about punk rock. A good time is had by all! And of course, it wouldn't be a Verity! ep if the Verities didn't take a sweet tangent into social issues. This time it's an examination of accents and the class systems of various countries. It's always a party when we have all six Verities in the house! Join Deb, Erika, Katrina, Liz, Lynne, and Tansy as we squee and muse and generally chat about series 9. It's tons of fun and less chaotic than you might expect. And as always, we veer into thinky territory as we discuss whether this season really is the most feminist of new Who (or whether it's really feminist at all). There's lots to cover, and we enjoy the heck out of covering it. What did you think of series 9? Where do you weigh in on the question of this series' feminism? What do you think of Clara's arc? The hybrid (or lack thereof)? Let us know in the comments! And don't forget to enter our Big Finish giveaway! [link on our site] ^E
We close out our companion miniseries in fine style with Liz's pick, "The Curse of Peladon". Join Deb, Erika, Katrina, and Liz as we discuss Jo's merits as a companion. They are many--especially in this story. There's a lot of Jo love, dissension among the ranks as to which Peladon story is better, and even some soul-searching. It's quite an episode! What do you think about Jo? Is she as awesome as the Verities think? Or do you still see her as a useless screamer? Our companion miniseries continues! This week Deb picked the story, so join her, Erika, Lynne, and Tansy as we chat about Rose in "The Unquiet Dead". It may not be the first story you think of when you think of Rose, but Deb explains why it's a great pick to demonstrate some of her Roseiest characteristics. What do you think of "The Unquiet Dead" as a Rose story? Does it display her companionness completely? Or would you pick a different story for her? Let us know in the comments! This week the Verities who are parents talk about that. Join Deb, Lynne, and Tansy as they discuss what it's like to raise children who are fans--and to be a fan as a parent. This my be the most personal Verity! yet. Are you a parent raising a young DW fan? Let us know about it in the comments! How young did you start your kids on Who? How did you explain concepts like regeneration? We'd like to know! ^E Bonus link [on our site]:Our Patreon page (We'll do bonus commentaries when we hit 120 and 125 supporters!)
Welcome to a one-of-a-kind episode of Verity! Join Erika and Liz as we try to figure out a way to salvage a recording session gone horribly wrong. (Well, if you consider having only two Verities horribly wrong. As it turned out, it worked pretty well if we do say so ourselves.) Liz had the bright idea to take questions from the listeners--practically in real time! So that's exactly what we did. Huge thanks to the listeners who tweeted us questions and made this whole thing possible! If you have questions you'd like to hear us answer in the future, please leave them in the comments! ^E Related links [on our site]:Random TrekRevolution 60Brianna WuDoctor Who - The High Council
Time for another silly bit of fun for the Verities! Join Deb, Erika, Katrina, and Liz as we delve into Doctor Who: Who-ology, a book of Doctor Who miscellany by Cavan Scott and Mark Wright. Deb puts us through our paces with a bunch of DW questions that are tricksy as can be. Play along or laugh at our incompetence--it's up to you! Let us know what you think in the comments! ^E
Once again, we bring you a Gallifrey One-based Verity! that we recorded while in the same room! Join Deb, Erika, Katrina, and Liz as we giggle over convention fun and revel in the rare experience of recording face-to-face. This year's Gally saw many of the Verities on stage (interviewing!), on panels (being erudite and awesome!), and wandering the lobby and halls of the LAX Marriott (having a lovely time!). In addition, Deb has a great interview with director Rachel Talalay, who was a bit of a rockstar at this year's convention. ^E Bonus thank-you link [on our site]:Roam Mobility (who made it possible for Erika and Kat to stay in touch while conventioning!)
Happy holidays one and all! This week it's an oversized celebration, as we have all six Verities onboard for this ep! Join Deb, Erika, Katrina, Liz, Lynne, and Tansy as we celebrate the season by talking about the last new Doctor Who episode we'll have for a while. It's mostly Christmas cheer all up in here, so if you're looking for a good rant, you're (mostly) in the wrong place. We talk Capaldi, Clara, Danny, Santa, and more! What did you think of this year's Christmas outing? Was it Santastic? Or ho-ho-horrible? Let us know in the comments! It's been a great year here at Verity! Thanks to everyone for listening, supporting, and taking part in the conversation! ^E Also covered [links on our site]: Kat got some sweet Doctor Who Christmas gifts including a TARDIS blanket, a TARDIS mug, and a plush Dalek! And with that, it's over--for another six weeks, anyway. Series 8 has come to a close, and its final episode has rather a lot to chew over. Join Deb, Erika, and Katrina as we delve into some of those elements: Missy/The Master, Clara as the Doctor, the evolution of lying, the self-realization of the Doctor... There are so many elements, however, that some of them will be left for next week, when we have many Verities to talk about the whole shebang--it's our Series 8 wrap-up! What did you think of the series finale? Was it a perfect culmination of a fantastic series? A fitting culmination for a lousy series? Or something in between? Let us know in the comments! ^E Also covered [links on our site]: Erika can't wait for Liz's upcoming book in the "Chicks Dig" series, Companion Piece! The season finale has finally arrived! Or part one of it has, anyway. It's safe to say that most of the Verities are preeeeety excited about it. Join Deb, Erika, Liz, and Tansy as we enthusiastically flail and squee and jabber about all there is to love and speculate about "Dark Water". There's a lot to chew on here. There's also a bit of a Skype lag, which causes some simultaneous talking, but that doesn't stop us from gleefully recounting our favorite bits and examining what (we think) is going on. What did you think about "Dark Water"? We know the response wasn't entirely positive, and as always, we're interested in all your opinions! (As long as they're phrased kindly and don't insult those who disagree, anyway. Of course, you guys are awesome and pretty much always stick to that!) So please leave a comment and let us know what you thought of these revelations and why. Can it be Saturday already please? ^E Also covered: Tansy's already happy Halloween was much improved by seeing Sean Pertwee dressed as his dad, the 3rd Doctor! There may be only three Verities this week (Dratted real life interfering with our recording schedule! Hugs to Tansy and her under-the-weather wee one.), but we press on and manage to fill the time with lots of heistey squee. Join Deb, Erika, and Liz as we cover one of the lighter episodes of series 8 thus far. Erika proves she's not totally heartless and does enjoy the occasional fun ep. Deb doesn't like aliens who look like Brony cosplayers. And Liz battles a dive-bombing fly. What did you think of "Time Heist"? The Capaldi goodness just keeps on coming! Join Deb, Erika, Lynne, and Tansy as we tackle what seems to be another divisive episode amongst Doctor Who fans, and the Verities are no different! Though we do disagree on parts of the story, we can all still come together on our love for Capaldi and Clara. And on our opinion that Deb may have a Moffat problem. (Sometimes an edit is just an edit--or IS it?) What did you think of Listen? WARNING: While this episode of Verity! has no swearing, we do refer to some rather grown-up concepts, so if you usually listen with your children, you might want to take a swing through this Extra before you bring the kiddies on board--either that or fast-forward through Lynne's answer to this question. For this Extra!, we turn to yet another silly what-if-type question. Join Deb, Erika, Katrina, Liz, and Lynne as we plan how we'd each take over the world/galaxy/universe. Which Doctor Who villains would we recruit as henchmen? What kind of evil master-plans would we employ? Would any of us stand a chance of successful conquest? How would you go about taking over? Let us know in the comments! ^E
It's another listener-participation Extra! You asked us questions. We answered! Join Deb, Erika, Lynne, and Tansy as we briefly chat about the 16-second series 8 teaser and then dive into your clever questions. We had a lot of fun recording this one, so thanks to all the listeners who participated! If we didn't get to your question here, perhaps we will in a future Extra! You never know... Also, Lynne would like it known that she meant to say she'd sacrifice "The Twin Dilemma" rather than "Vengeance on Varos". What would she sacrifice it for? Listen and see! ^E Related links [on our site]:Series 8 teaserChicks Dig Time LordsWhedonistasJames Tiptree, Jr. Award
It's been a while, but once again, we're making good on our promise to defend Doctor Who. Those bits you think are dodgy? We'll find something good in 'em--even if it kills us. Join Deb, Erika, Lynne, and Tansy for our most ridiculous Extra! yet. Deb springs a last-minute rules change on us, and it results in consternation and hilarity. Can the Verities keep their defenses to two minutes? (EXACTLY two minutes!) Listen and see! ^E
Though it pains us to say it (some more than others), the time of our beloved Matt Smith's tenure as the Doctor is almost at an end. (By the time you get around to this, it may well be over.) Join ALL of the Verities(!) Deb, Erika, Katrina, Liz, Lynne, and Tansy, as we discuss why we think he's been so successful in the role and reminisce about our favorite 11th-Doctor stories. We're all excited about Peter Capaldi, but we can't help being sad to see such a wonderful Doctor say farewell. It's another extra-long Extra! as our holiday gift to you. (Or maybe it's just that we have a lot to say, and when ALL SIX of us are together it takes even longer to say it!) ^E
The Doctor and his companions aren't the only ones who've been around for 50 years this month. Join Deb, Erika, Katrina, and Lynne as we detour into the realm of villainy and discuss the dreaded Daleks! Dalekmania hit hard in the 60s, inspiring toys, films, more toys, and even a song! We're back to talking Doctors this week, but perhaps not in the way you expected. Join Erika, Kat, Liz, and Tansy as we discuss those actors who played the Doctor non-canonically! *gasp* Yes, there are plenty of performances out there that don't fall under the umbrella of what went out on BBC1. More than some of us realized! Certainly more than some of us cared about. As you may have noticed, we're sans Deb this week. With no one (but the hapless Erika) to reign in the troops, see just how far things go off the rails. (Actually, we remain pretty much on track until near the very end.) (And despite the title of this episode, I'm afraid we don't actually dip back into the Virgin New Adventures and talk about that shadowy figure from Gallifrey's ancient past who may or may not have some direct connection to the Doctor. If you want to hear about that, check out this episode of The Doctor Who Book Club Podcast.) ^E Supporting links [on our site]:Two-minute Time Lord 316: What is "Doctor Who Canon" Anyway??? Is the name of a Harry Chapin album... It also is the title of this post because I'm here to apologize without giving all of the above. Sonic Society has been woefully neglected. Huey is weak and needing food. Jack and David are scattered among the podverse ether. Not going to go into the details, but let's just say the old Chinese curse about "Interesting Times" continues to be a factor. Or well, it did. I'm finding after a near 20 week absence, like the protagonist in Bioshock, I've pushed my head above water to gasp and see the flaming wreckage around me. Now the challenge comes of trying to pull back from the brink and get caught up. It's going to take a while, but I'm committed. I love this medium. I love the Society, and I love every one of the fans out there who have walked this road with us for eight years. Thanks so much for your concerned letters, messages, and the like. I'm sorry if some of them weren't returned, life just gets a feller all bunkered down sometimes. If you are: -An old friend of the Society and want to see your new work put on, give me a shout. -A new friend who would like to grace us with the opportunity to showcase your work, give me a whistle. - Someone who wants to showcase one of your shows in our annual "Sonic Summerstock" where we feature old time radio scripts remounted by your cast, light up a flare! - Someone who has no idea about any of the above but wants to give me a notification anyway. Let me know! Thanks, and keep listening... please... :) Jack
