Tom Kearney is a Hampstead resident of over a quarter of a century and year-round swimmer at the nearby Ponds. He has a life well lived. In this podcast we talk about that life and the very special place that swimming in open water has in it. The late Al Alvarez, poet and author of the book ‘Pond Life', Tom's friend in Hampstead, brought him to swimming at The Ponds, something that he says has saved his life. On the eighteenth of December 2009, Tom was knocked over by a bus in London's Oxford Street, and was in near-death coma for two weeks, making a miraculous recovery subsequently. We talk about how the accident transformed his life, and how daily swimming is central to this transformation. We talk about poetry and The Ponds. About the central importance of family, of living each day to the full. About his campaigning for bus safety in London - ‘If you shut up truth, and bury it underground it will but grow' (Emile Zola). For Tom, campaigning and swimming outside all year round are not dissimilar - they're uncomfortable, require both physical and mental stamina, and every time you do it you achieve something that, in a different life, you'd have thought impossible. We talk about how life is serious business, but there is plenty of time for laughter, especially in relation to the East German Ladies Swimming Team (a Hampstead Men's Pond thing), which Tom is also a central part of. Tom brims with positivity, a Hampstead intellect who swims and appreciates all that life can offer.

Pond Life head honcho Robi debuts on his own imprint with the raucous, modular based ep titled ‘Overnight'. The three-tracker is full to the brim with groovy club centric jams that would get anyone moving in a heartbeat. Surprising to no one is our unabashedly love affair with b sides, as such we're happy to premiere the final track of the release, titled ‘Cobra'. Muted melodies and a key undulating synth start the track off strongly and persist throughout. Lending a hand to movement are syncopated textures snapping and crackling in the background. As the label puts, Cobra ‘rounds out the release and dives deeper via multilayered, ethereal synth textures, dreamy bass drones gritty dubbed out stabs and stripped back, saturated rhythm. Cobra, and the rest of the Overnight EP will be released on Pond Life Records, the 23rd of February. TRANSCRIPT OF AUDIO From the Cumberland Gap to the Atlantic Ocean, this is Virginia Water Radio for the weeks of August 7 and August 14, 2023. MUSIC – ~27 sec – Lyrics: “I'm gonna soak up the sun, I'm gonna dry out the river, I'm gonna run to the shimmering pond, until the summer comes….” That's part of “Until the Summer Comes,” by the Harrisonburg and Rockingham County, Va.-based band, The Steel Wheels.  It sets the stage for this episode's exploration of what one may hear and see when the summer comes to a southwestern Virginia pond on a hot July day.  On July 27, 2023, I visited a Blacksburg pond to listen and watch at four times during the day.  Have a listen for about 80 seconds to an audio post card of that pondside day and see what creatures you recognize.  Short breaks in the audio separate recordings at sunrise, mid-day, and sunset. SOUND – ~83 sec Some of the sounds you heard were a Louisiana Waterthrush beside the pond's outlet stream at sunrise; melodic Wood Thrushes at sunrise and sunset; a Belted Kingfisher at midday; and, as the day was ending, the buzzing of cicadas, the croaking trills of Gray Tree Frogs, the chittering of Chimney Swifts, and the eerie whistles of a Screech Owl.  Throughout most of the day one could also hear various other birds, such as cardinals, crows, and towhees, along with the occasional “thunk” of a Green Frog.Other sights of the day included a Great Blue Heron flying away from the pond at sunrise and returning at sunset; Cedar Waxwings feeding on pond insects; dragonflies and damselflies mating and defending territories; water striders skating on the pond surface; a slow-moving Snapping Turtle; and what might have been a mink diving into the pond's outlet stream. The small but information-rich book, A Golden Guide to Pond Life, notes that the various kinds of natural and human-constructed ponds have, quote, “ceaseless activity” in spring and summer, and that thousands of plants and animals live in or near ponds, lakes, and streams.  While the summer's still here, I hope you have time to explore a pond or some other aquatic world. Thanks to The Steel Wheels for permission to use this episode's music, and we close with about 25 more seconds of “Until the Summer Comes.” MUSIC – ~27 sec – Lyrics: “…until the summer comes.” SHIP'S BELL Virginia Water Radio is produced by the Virginia Water Resources Research Center, part of Virginia Tech's College of Natural Resources and Environment.  For more Virginia water sounds, music, or information, visit us online at virginiawaterradio.org, or call the Water Center at (540) 231-5624.  Thanks to Ben Cosgrove for his version of “Shenandoah” to open and close this episode.  In Blacksburg, I'm Alan Raflo, thanking you for listening, and wishing you health, wisdom, and good water. A Reading Life, A Writing Life, with Sally Bayley

Sally wakes up at dawn and thinks about the book she's currently writing – Pond Life, a fictional biography of two women who live on the south coast of Britain in the years after the Second World War. The book addresses themes of loneliness, disconnection and the consolations and snares of film, art and the imagination. Sally consults her own memorandum, a note to herself and the reader, about the composition of the book; and she reflects on the need for calm, away from the distraction of screens, in the creative process. Further Reading: Pond Life will be Sally's fourth book in her series which follow autobiographical themes and which she prefers to call “anti-memoirs”. The other books are Girl With Dove, published by William Collins in 2018. No Boys Play Here in 2022, and The Green Lady, which will be published this summer. You can learn more about her writing here: https://sallybayley.com/books Brief Encounter is a 1945 British film directed by David Lean from a screenplay by Noël Coward, based on his 1936 one-act play Still Life. Starring Celia Johnson, Trevor Howard, Stanley Holloway, and Joyce Carey, it and was hailed as a breakthrough in modern realism. It is now widely seen as one of the greatest films of all time, with its depiction of frustrated love in a repressed and class-ridden society.  It features Piano Concerto No.2, composed by Sergei Rachmaninoff between June 1900 and April 1901 during a period of creative release, following some years of depression and a devastating writer's block. Samuel Taylor Coleridge's Biographia Literaria was published in 1817 in two volumes. Coleridge was a key figure in the introduction of the discipline of psychology into British intellectual life, and his work outlines his theories on imagination, the creative mind, perception, and poetry. He writes: The primary IMAGINATION I hold to be the living Power and prime Agent of all human Perception, and as a repetition in the finite mind of the eternal act of creation in the infinite I AM. Mr. Bennett and Mrs. Brown is an essay by Virginia Woolf published in 1924. A furious rebuttal of Arnold Bennett, who had written a critical review of her book Jacob's Room, it rejects the writers of the Edwardian generation and announces the arrival of modernism. Referring to the revolutionary exhibition by Roger Fry, Manet and the Post-Impressionists, she declares: "in or about December, 1910, human character changed". Modernism, she says, has changed "religion, conduct, politics, and literature"; criticising contemporary ideas of realism, she writes: “What is reality? And who are the judges of reality?" MUSIC – ~4 sec – instrumental This week, we drop in on a musically-enhanced, water-insect competition.  The participants have been challenged to figure out the most species-rich group of insects on the planet, and then come up with the distinguishing words for seven aquatic versions of that group.  Have a listen for about 15 seconds to this entomological exercise, and see if you know the name for that overall group of insects.  And here’s a hint: the name sounds like a revolutionary, four-member rock band. VOICES and MUSIC - ~15 sec – “Crawling. Long-toed. Predaceous diving. Riffle. Water penny. Water scavenger. Whirligig.” If you guessed beetles, you’re right!  You heard part of “Beetle Ballet,” by Torrin Hallett, underlying the descriptive names of seven water beetle families.  Scientists categorize beetles into a taxonomic group called an order, and beetles are the most diverse order of animals, with a current estimate of about 390,000 species worldwide.  Perhaps as many as 20,000 of those species are water beetles.  The seven kinds of water beetles you heard, out of about 20 North American families, are among the most commonly found on this continent, with the predaceous diving beetle family and the water scavenger beetle family having the largest number of species. As a group, water beetles occupy all kinds and sizes of aquatic and semi-aquatic habitats, such as ponds, lakes, and other still waters; streams and rivers; various kinds of wetlands; temporary habitats like puddles; and a variety of moist areas on coastal shorelines.  Beetles that inhabit water typically do so both as adults and in their immature, larval stage; but some, like Water Pennies, are terrestrial as adults, and Long-toed Water Beetles have terrestrial larvae.  All beetle adults have two pairs of wings, with the forewings forming a hardened sheath of the membranous hind wings, and many water beetles are able to hold under those forewings a bubble of air that allows them to breathe while submerged.  Feeding habits among the thousands of water beetle species vary widely, both in what they eat and in how they acquire their food. Water beetles have many remarkable adaptations and biological variations.  Here’s one example: Whirligig beetles, which can be seen swimming in circles on the surface of ponds, lakes, and still water on stream margins, have eyes divided into an upper and lower half; the upper half can see above the water surface, while the lower half can see below. Thanks to several Blacksburg, Va., friends for lending their voices to this episode.  Thanks also to Torrin Hallett for composing this week’s music especially for Virginia Water Radio, and we close with the last 20 seconds of “Beetle Ballet.” MUSIC - ~ 22 sec – instrumental SHIP’S BELL Virginia Water Radio is produced by the Virginia Water Resources Research Center, part of Virginia Tech’s College of Natural Resources and Environment.   For more Virginia water sounds, music, or information, visit us online at virginiawaterradio.org, or call the Water Center at (540) 231-5624.  Thanks to Ben Cosgrove for his version of “Shenandoah” to open and close the show.  In Blacksburg, I’m Alan Raflo, thanking you for listening, and wishing you health, wisdom, and good water. Yes, Asylum of the Daleks marked the return of the good Doctor and his erstwhile companions for the first time since last Christmas, and in high style with quite literally EVERY DALEK EVER making an appearance. What did the Three Who Rule think of Asylum? You'll just have to tune in and find out, but suffice it to say their opinions were less than uniform. All this and Pond Life, an entirely too long rant about the BBC America specials, the universally beloved viewing figure recitation, and much more on this episode of RADIO! FREE! SKARO! Well here's a surprise.  Phil, Paul and Tony have managed to get together to bring you an audio commentary for the 2nd Doctor story the Tomb Of The Cybermen.  And they said they couldn't manage it this month!  The delights contained within the commentary are Phil and Tony both managing to squeeze in impressions of Tina Turner, Paul and Tony accuse Phil of being aggressive (to which Phil completely misses the point) and Tony brings his usual non-conformist facts which this time features how Patrick Troughton chose his name. And in the news, Series 7 finally gets its airdate confirmed, the Pond Life mini episodes, a bit of DVD news and in Omega's Tat Corner, Rory Williams finally gets his action figure.
