If you don't believe the 2024 presidential campaign can get any more bizarre or anxiety-inducing, just wait. So says Douglas MacKinnon, a political and communications consultant. He joins Michael to talk about his opinion piece in The Hill, "What if no candidate wins 270 electoral votes?" Mr. MacKinnon was a writer for Presidents Ronald Reagan and George H.W. Bush, and former special assistant for policy and communications at the Pentagon. Original air date 6 March 2024.
The election team of Governor Ron DeSantis, together with DeSantis himself, has openly refuted a circulating hearsay regarding his potential withdrawal from the 2024 presidential run, provided he concedes to Ex-President Donald Trump in the initial caucus of the country taking place in Iowa. A conjecture that gained momentum after being penned down in an editorial in The Hill by Douglas MacKinnon, who claimed to have insights from 'two individuals deeply acquainted with the DeSantis campaign.' The article hinted at DeSantis' likely decision to step back from the race, and do so immediately after the night of the Iowa caucus or the subsequent morning at the latest. As per these sources, this would come as a reluctant endorsement of Trump by the governor. This particular piece of information got its fair share of attention online, causing a considerable ripple in the political sphere. However, Bryan Griffin, the spokesperson for DeSantis, was quick to nullify the speculation. Griffin brought forth a strong rebuttal, suggesting that such rumors reek of insecurity amongst the supporters of Trump. He discarded the rumor as nothing more than a baseless piece of disinformation meant to taint the image of DeSantis. In Griffin's own words, 'Ron DeSantis appears committed to a substantial run and is here to stay.' Such steadfast belief depicting the unwavering campaign of DeSantis exemplified the team's commitment and rebutted any heating rumors to the contrary. Apart from Griffin, Governor DeSantis himself came forward to nip the rumor in the bud. He categorically dismissed the speculations and assured his stance on the matter. Addressing the situation head-on, DeSantis proclaimed, 'Such reports bear no truth and are unquestionably invalid.' He did not hesitate to call out the report as a 'manufactured falsehood,' making his position clear on this matter. The Governor's assurance add further credibility to the dismissal, emphasizing his determination to continue the political race, debunking any whisper that suggested otherwise. Publicly addressing the conjecture also conveyed the firmness of DeSantis in maintaining a fair and transparent campaign, in line with the core principles of his campaign. The timing of the rumor and DeSantis's response has also been noteworthy, considering it surfaced when DeSantis amplified his critique of Trump. In particular, he focused on Trump's 2016 campaign pledge which, according to DeSantis, remained largely unfulfilled. In the event leading up to the pivotal Iowa caucus on January 15, DeSantis has reportedly raised serious questions about Trump's performance during his tenure. He expressed disappointment over certain unmet objectives, particularly when it came to the promise of constructing the border wall. As per DeSantis, such unfulfilled promises including the 'wall project,' previously a key element of Trump's campaign strategy, were notable. This unsparing critique from DeSantis has added another layer of complexity to the unfolding political dynamics. These events reflect the confident and poised demeanor of DeSantis and his team amidst the heated political climate. How this stance will hold up, or influence votes in the light of the approaching caucus, remains a question of high interest. Nevertheless, Governor DeSantis, through his adamancy and engagements, appears to be holding his ground with grace under pressure. His candid conclusions and responses hint at a campaign striving for consistent, genuine political dialogue. All told, the drama surrounding the DeSantis campaign demonstrates the pulse of American politics. As the public awaits the Iowa caucus, one thing remains certain - rumors and speculations will need more than just whispers to shake the resolve of a committed candidate like Governor DeSantis. Neil Gaiman's Good Omens is set for a Season 3 renewal by Amazon and BBC. Main cast members, including Michael Sheen and David Tennant, are expected to return. However, Douglas Mackinnon, executive producer and co-showrunner for the initial two seasons, has confirmed his exit from the show. Despite Mackinnon's departure, Season 3 appears to be on the horizon, especially given the success of Season 2. Neil Gaiman has hinted that the upcoming season will be inspired by the unfinished sequel to the original Good Omens novel and has also clarified there won't be a fourth season.
Jesse Starcher, David Wright, Al Sedano and Mark Radulich present their Good Omens Season 2 TV Show Review! Good Omens is a British fantasy comedy series created by Neil Gaiman based on his and Terry Pratchett's 1990 novel of the same name. A co-production between Amazon Studios and BBC Studios, the series was directed by Douglas Mackinnon, with Gaiman also serving as showrunner. Michael Sheen and David Tennant lead a large ensemble cast that also includes Jon Hamm, Miranda Richardson, Michael McKean, Derek Jacobi, Brian Cox, Benedict Cumberbatch, and Frances McDormand as the voice of God, who narrates the series.Like the novel, Good Omens features various Christian themes and figures and follows various characters all trying to either encourage or prevent an imminent Armageddon, seen through the eyes of the angel Aziraphale and the demon Crowley.Although the show's first series was conceived and marketed as a limited series, it was renewed for a second series in June 2021; Sheen and Tennant returned, along with most of the cast and crew. The second series was released in its entirety on Amazon Prime Video on 28 July 2023.Disclaimer: The following may contain offensive language, adult humor, and/or content that some viewers may find offensive – The views and opinions expressed by any one speaker does not explicitly or necessarily reflect or represent those of Mark Radulich or W2M Network.Mark Radulich and his wacky podcast on all the things:https://linktr.ee/markkind76alsoFB Messenger: Mark Radulich LCSWTiktok: @markradulichtwitter: @MarkRadulich

On this SPECIAL EDITION of The Movie Podcast, Daniel and Anthony are joined by MICHAEL SHEEN and DAVID TENNANT of GOOD OMENS on Prime Video. Originally based on Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman's international best-selling novel, Good Omens Season 2 explores storylines that go beyond the original source material to illuminate the ineffable friendship between Aziraphale (Michael Sheen), a fussy angel and rare-book dealer, and the fast-living demon Crowley (David Tennant). Could former First Lady Michelle Obama be on the ballot in the next US election? Several Democratic leaders certainly think so, with Former White House and Pentagon official Douglas MacKinnon saying she has the 'it' factor to succeed in the polls. US correspondent Dan Mitchinson says Michelle Obama doesn't have much of a track record as a politician and people could project their ideas onto her with limited evidence. "Yes, undocumented immigrants take jobs from working Americans. Here's the proof," an opinion piece in The Washington Post tells us. "Save our truckers, not affluent students seeking a free ride," pleads longtime Republican consultant Douglas MacKinnon in The Hill. "Biden's Student Debt Cancellation Robs Hard-Working Americans, Will Make Inflation Even Worse," proclaims a so-called Expert Statement from the Heritage Foundation. There's a warning we hear again and again, particularly from the Right: A policy that would actually help people must be stopped, because it'll harm the Working Man. According to demagogues like Tucker Carlson and JD Vance – as well as many of their more liberal counterparts – immigration, labor organizing, protest rights, and student debt cancellation simply can't be allowed, lest they harm hardworking, meat-and-potatoes plumbers and truckers. But these cynical admonitions disguise some very important truths. Progressive policies serve the interests of many of these plumbers and truckers, many of whom might want to organize their workplaces or have their debt relieved. And the supposed menaces of job-stealing immigrants or entitled lawyers who want others to pay off their loans aren't actually responsible for depressed wages or plummeting standards of living–corporations bolstered by U.S. policymaking are. On this episode, we examine the right-wing trope of ventriloquizing an imaginary “Working Man” in order to divert attention from policies that serve the corporate bottom line, We'll detail how this tactic obscures class dynamics between labor and capital, reinforces racist conceptions that harm workers of color, and ultimately suppresses the rights of all workers while absolving their employers of wrongdoing. Our guest is filmmaker, author and Debt Collective co-founder Astra Taylor

Left and Right live in different worlds. Here's a new example. The most common question Ezra Klein, NYT left-leaning columnist, says he gets at speeches and on his podcast is “should I have children in a world that's burning up from global warming?” This is only a question for those on the Left. Last night Dennis debated the question, are people basically good? Dennis talks to Douglas MacKinnon, former speechwriter for Presidents Ronald Reagan and George H.W. Bush. His new book is The 56: Liberty Lessons From Those Who Risked All to Sign The Declaration of Independence… Parents will do anything to keep the love of their children, including compromising their values. Author Douglas MacKinnon discusses his book "THE 56: Liberty Lessons From Those Who Risked All to Sign The Declaration of Independence." This event took place on May 23, 2022 at The Institute of World Politics. About the book: "THE 56: Liberty Lessons From Those Who Risked All to Sign The Declaration of Independence" by Douglas MacKinnon honors the 56 signers of The Declaration of Independence and details why the genius and vision of these admittedly imperfect men are just as relevant today. This is a book that also serves as a plea not to cancel our shared American history. As the author stresses: “If our history is bad, let us condemn it and learn from it. If it is good, let us praise it and build upon it. But let us never twist, censor, or cancel our shared American history.” Purchase the book here: https://www.amazon.com/56-Liberty-Lessons-Declaration-Independence/dp/1637584245 About the author: Douglas MacKinnon is a former White House and Pentagon official and bestselling author working with other former government officials to establish a Foundation to preserve the history and protect the reputations of our Founding Fathers. This week, we have half an hour of fun character-based nonsense followed by a fairly disastrous five-minute Doctor Who episode. But we're all too busy reminiscing about the end of an era to notice. Adam Richard joins us for The Power of Three. Notes and Links This week's real-life villain Steven Berkoff had worked with director Douglas Mackinnon before on a film called The Flying Scotsman (2006), which stars breakout Doctor Who star Jonny Lee Miller as someone who wins a world title in cycling while riding a heavily-modified washing machine or something. Douglas Mackinnon is delightfully oblique in his description of Steven Berkoff's on-set behaviour during The Power of Three in this interview in Starburst magazine. As is now generally well-known, a sixteen-year-old Chris Chibnall appeared on Open Air in 1986 to criticise The Trial of a Time Lord in the presence of writers Pip and Jane Baker. Worth a watch. And finally, in the tag, we all discuss this French & Saunders sketch, in which Dame Helen Mirren delivers an unforgettable acting masterclass. Eh? Listen as the three acerbic grouchwads expound upon the story in question and also reflect on stats and what a blight they are on human society. But that’s not all, not by a long chalk! Minutes after the TARDIS materialises in contemporary Britain, Martha authorises the raid of an ATMOS (Atmospheric Omission System) factory. The Doctor introduces his () to Martha and UNIT; Donna instantly befriends Martha, but is concerned about UNIT's ethics and asks the Doctor why he is associated with them; the Doctor ambiguously replies he used to work for them in the . ATMOS is marketing a system developed by Luke Rattigan (). The system also reduces emissions to zero; UNIT requested the Doctor's help because the technology is not contemporary and potentially alien. UNIT are also concerned about fifty-two deaths occurring spontaneously and contemporaneously several days before the narrative. The Doctor travels to Rattigan's private school to investigate the system, and discovers that the episode's events are being influenced by the . The Sontarans depicted in the episode are part of a battlegroup led by General Staal, "the undefeated" (). Instead of an instant invasion, they are tactically approaching an invasion with a combination of human clones, mind control, and ATMOS; Martha is captured by two of the controlled humans and cloned to provide a tactical advantage against UNIT. A subplot depicts Donna returning to her home to warn her mother Sylvia () and grandfather () about the Doctor. Concerned about the implications of telling the truth, Donna reneges from warning her mother. At the end of the episode, the Doctor investigates the ATMOS device attached to Donna's car and discovers a secondary function: the device can emit a poisonous gas. Wilfred attempts to take the car off the road, but is trapped when Staal activates all 400 million installed in cars worldwide. The episode's depicts Donna shouting for help while the Doctor stares helplessly at a street full of cars emitting the gas. [] Production The episode features the return of the , who last appeared in the 1985 serial , a centric appearance by , and , who had last appeared in "" and made special guest appearances in the episodes "", "", and ""; the brief executive producer gave to writer included the terms "Sontarans", "military", and "Martha's back". Martha's departure allowed Davies to change the character's personality. In her reappearance, she is more mature and equal to the Doctor in comparison to falling in love in the . Several aspects of her character were debated: in particular, her status and reaction to Donna. Raynor elected to emphasise Martha's medical career over her military career, and avoided a "" scenario because she felt it would rehash 's () initial opinion of () from the second series episode "". The episode is the first centric appearance of since the show's revival. Their name has changed from Intelligence Taskforce to Unified Intelligence Taskforce at the request of the United Nations, who cited the political climate and potential "brand confusion" as reasons for disassociation. The new acronym was coined by Davies after several meetings among the scriptwriters. The UNIT privates Gray and Wilson were specifically written as "". The episode refers to when the Doctor is unsure whether he worked for UNIT in the 70s or 80s. This episode continues the pattern of having monsters from the classic series return in the new one. Davies commented that the Sontarans were "always on his list" of villains to resurrect. The time and location of the episode was deliberately chosen because every Sontaran story except for was set on Earth. When interviewed on , stated that she had been filming alongside ten actors playing Sontarans for two weeks before she realised that there were actors inside the Sontaran costumes. She had assumed the Sontarans "ran on electricity". It was not until an actor removed his helmet to reveal his real face that she realised her mistake. She stated she was "freaked out" by this and said she "nearly died". Raynor initally envisioned the poisonous gas would be emitted by factories, but changed it in later drafts to cars for several reasons: the episode would provide social commentary and the idea of an "evil system" was "much more engageable" and "irresistible"; Davies thought the concept was "so very Doctor Who". Because the series was produced out of order, the "ATMOS" subplot was seeded in the episode "". In the episode, a system installed in a UNIT jeep undramatically explodes; originally, Raynor wanted it to be a large explosion, but reduced the explosion to several sparks to reduce costs and to lampoon an action movie cliché. The opening scene, which depicts the system driving its occupant into a canal, was filmed at 's docks. The scene was the first time a car-cannon had been used since 2005, and was required to be completed in one shot. The car fired into the canal was removed immediately afterwards to clear the shipping route. The episode, like "" and "", properly introduces the lead companion's family. Unlike the Tyler or Jones families, both Sylvia Noble and Wilfred Mott had met the Doctor before (in "" and "", respectively), providing Raynor with an additional subplot. Expository dialogue explains Mott's absence from "The Runaway Bride" as the character having . Wilfred's positive opinion of the Doctor is different to Sylvia, who "joined a long line of mothers that don't get the Doctor"; Davies had wanted a family member who trusted the Doctor since the show's revival. Despite the Sontaran's clone culture being asserted in the classic series, "The Sontaran Strategem" is the first episode to depict cloning. Originally, all of the factory workers were to be clones, but Raynor reduced it to only Martha to solve continuity problems with the second part. The template clone was portrayed by Ruari Mears, who wore a prosthetic mask which took longer to apply than any mask he had worn. The scenes involving the cloning tank were filmed in a Welsh shampoo factory and reused a prop from "" as the tank which contained the clone. Davies and Agyeman enjoyed scenes set in the cloning room; Agyeman enjoyed playing an "evil companion", who she and Davies felt made the real Martha "warmer", and Davies thought Privates Gray and Harris discovering the tank in a darkened room was "classic Doctor Who". "The Poison Sky" is the fifth episode of the of series . It was broadcast on on . The episode features both old companion and the alien . It is the second of a two part story, following "". //<![CDATA[ if (window.showTocToggle) { var tocShowText = "show"; var tocHideText = "hide"; showTocToggle(); } //]]> Plot Synopsis Following from the previous episode, () manages to free () from the car by smashing the window with an axe. The () sends () back to the while he sets off to figure out what the are up to. After studying the gas, determines that it will need to reach 80% density to become lethal. Elsewhere, 's clone () helps the Sontarans to seize the TARDIS. Realising that he is trapped, the Doctor attempts to goad General Staal () into revealing their plan: Staal is smart enough not to fall prey to this ploy, but the Doctor does trick him into moving the TARDIS out of the main war room, placing Donna in a position to help. Against the Doctor's advice, UNIT decides to use nuclear weapons against the Sontarans; however, Martha's clone has covertly copied the launch codes, and stops every attempt they make to fire the weapons. This in itself shows a hidden agenda, since a nuclear strike would not have harmed them in the first place. This, combined with the unidentifiable elements in the gas, suggest that the Sontarans have an interest in keeping anything from disrupting the atmospheric conversion. At the same time, the Sontarans mobilize a contingent of troops to protect the factory. With the Sontarans' ability to jam most conventional firearms by expanding the copper-lined bullets, the UNIT troops are quickly slaughtered and the factory is secured. Luke Rattigan () leaves the Sontaran mothership to gather his students, explaining that he plans to have the Sontarans take them to another planet and begin the human race anew. The students merely laugh him off, even when he brandishes a gun. When he returns to report his failure, the Sontarans likewise ridicule his efforts, admitting that they never intended to take him or his students anywhere. Rattigan teleports back to his mansion before they can kill him, and the Sontarans lock the teleport pods behind him. Meanwhile, the Doctor instructs Donna on how to reopen the teleport pods. As she makes her way through the ship, UNIT begins a counterattack, loading their weapons with non-copper bullets and using the aircraft carrier to clear the gas. The counterattack is a success, and the UNIT troops are able to put the Sontarans on the defensive. The distraction allows the Doctor to make his way to the cloning room where Martha is being held. Having figured out long before that the clone wasn't the genuine article, he severs its connection to Martha, leaving it to die. Martha convinces the clone to betray the Sontarans in its last moments, and the clone reveals that the poison gas is actually "food" for Sontaran clones: they are converting the planet into a giant breeding world. With Donna's help, the Doctor is able to reactivate the teleport pods, allowing him to rescue Donna, steal back the TARDIS, and teleport into Rattigan's mansion. With the equipment Rattigan's students built, the Doctor builds his own atmospheric converter, igniting the atmosphere to clear out the poison gas as shown in the picture. However, he knows the Sontarans won't accept defeat so easily, and teleports to their ship with the converter, planning to give them the choice between retreat or death. Staal chooses the latter, content with the knowledge that the Doctor will die with them. At the last moment, Rattigan teleports himself to the Sontaran ship and brings the Doctor back to Earth, sacrificing himself to destroy the Sontarans. With the day saved, Martha says goodbye to Donna and the Doctor in the TARDIS and prepares to head home. However, before she can leave, the TARDIS suddenly springs to life, locking the doors and piloting itself to an unknown destination as the jar containing the Doctor's bubbles. Continuity is mentioned as being "stranded in Peru", the first explicit mention of the character in the new series. Colonel Mace refers to him as "Sir Alastair", implying he has received a since the events of .Just as Donna moves towards the TARDIS screen while the Doctor contacts the Sontarans, can be seen on the screen, silently calling out. This follows a similar silent cameo appearance in "".The , the primary setting for the climax of "" and much of "", is seen again in this episode when it is used by UNIT to clear the poisonous gas from the atmosphere over the ATMOS factory. It is also equipped with a scaled down version of the Torchwood weapon that destroyed the ship in "".As the TARDIS traps Donna, Martha, and the Doctor at the end of the episode, the Doctor's severed hand, last seen at the beginning of "", can be seen in a similar state of agitation it felt when the TARDIS materialised near it in the Torchwood episode "".In addition to the Sontarans, the are mentioned for the first time in the revived series.Lachelle Carl reprises her role as the US Newsreader, Mal Loup, seen previously in the episodes "", "", "" and "" and in Doctor Who spin-off story .The Doctor asks Colonel Mace, "Are you my mummy?", while wearing a gas mask, a line spoken by gas mask-wearing characters in "" / "". Production This episode and the previous episode were filmed over five weeks, beginning in September 2007. Post-production was completed a week before the first part aired. During production, director Douglas Mackinnon intended to have the episode's climatic scene in the TARDIS show the moveable column in the center console move up and down much more rapidly than normal. However, when attempting to accomplish this, Mackinnon ended up breaking the prop, which took thirty minutes to repair. When the Doctor interrupts the Sontarans' transmission, animated footage from 's part , part show is brought up on screen featuring the villanous Polluto disguised as a and the heroic Tommy and his dog Daniel as his audience. As in many previous episodes of the revived series, supposed footage is used featuring reports of unfolding events. However, as with the more recent appearances of such footage in Doctor Who, the channel is simply captioned on screen as 'News 24' devoid of the logo. Since this episode was produced, the channel was rebranded in real life as . "The Poison Sky" marks the first time all three of the Tenth Doctor's primary companions — Donna Noble (Catherine Tate), Martha Jones (Freema Agyeman), and Rose Tyler (Billie Piper) — have appeared in the same episode, though Rose's appearance was extremely brief. Piper received screen credit, although her appearance is less than a second in duration. Broadcast Unofficial figures show that "The Poison Sky" was watched by 5.9 million viewers, giving it a 32.5% share of the total television audience. Although dipping below the 6 million mark, the programme was still the second most watched of the day, being beaten by ITV1's , which got 8.5 million viewers. It was the highest rated programme on BBC1 for the day. The programme is currently the 19th most watched of the week and received an score of 88 (considered "Excellent").
