We chat with Mike Forbes from Outatime! about his expectations for the Washington Capitals in the NHL Playoffs, talk about the inspiration for their new song "Red" and what it was like working with Vinnie Caruana, and he gives us a recap of their weekender with Overthinker ++ way more! Power chords and crashing boards. Mikey, Tom, and Justin talk music, hockey, and anything else that gets in their way. Tom and Mikey are lifelong friends that grew up on Long Island during the glory days of alternative music where our local bands were As Tall As Lions, Brand New, Taking Back Sunday, Bayside, The Sleeping, Envy on the Coast, you get the point. We spent many nights together at The Downtown, catching any pop-punk, indie, hardcore, or emo band that came through. This was not a phase, Mom! Fast forward 20 years and we are still just as passionate about the scene as we were during our girl jeans and youth XL band tees days. Tom and Mikey are diehard New York Islanders fans, but Justin (Bolts fan) likes to remind us that we are #notanislespodcast. As we got older we realized we can like more than one thing and running beside our love for music has always been our love for hockey. We have realized we are not alone in this thinking, actually there are many of us that love these two things! This podcast explores just how connected they are! NEW EPISODE EVERY TUESDAY! Jon Simmons is a musician from Pennsylvania whose newest project @itscreeks mixes gloom with groove to the fullest extent. He was formerly the frontman of @balanceandcomposure , a staple of the Pennsylvania music scene and a goated indie/rock and emo band in the hearts of many. Jon moved to Los Angeles about 5 years back to follow career pursuits as a solo venture and has continued to still grind to this day. He discusses his trepidations and anxiety he faced within the early days of studio recording, how Vinnie Caruana of the Movielife made a major impact on the band and a frightening van accident that they miraculously survived. As always, rate the show on Spotify and Apple Music and slap it with that five star rating. Severe thanks to Jon for being such a rad dude and taking the time to hang with me! This was another bucket list episode for me and it really means a lot to get to talk with my favorite bands. Go rip the Creeks EP “The Pain You Took On” and be on the lookout for more music from Jon coming soon! #KellensPettyTalkShow

On today's edition of "Flashback Friday's", I highlight a record that came out in the year 2017. The record I have chosen for this week comes from The Movielife and it's called "Cities In Search of A Heart". The Movielife is a Long Island punk rock band composed of vocalist Vinnie Caruana, guitarist Brandon Reilly, and drummer Brett Romnes. The band originally formed in 1997 and disbanded in 2003, but announced their official reunion in December 2014. Caruana and Reilly re-connected as friends and shortly afterwards began talking about a potential the Movielife reunion. The band subsequently began rehearsing in December 2014, performing their first shows since 2011 in New York City at Irving Plaza in February 2015. Asked whether a new album would be released, Caruana said he would "never rule that out". The Movielife performed several additional shows in the US later in the year, including an appearance at Today's Mixtape Festival, as well as a tour of the UK in June. In March 2016, Caruana revealed that the band were in the process of writing new material. The following month, the band released "Future Feeling (Afraid of Drugs)" as a single. In 2017, the group performed at Slam Dunk Festival in the UK. All promotional materials posted to the band's Twitter after the 2016 Presidential election feature only Brett Romnes, Brandon and Vinnie, implying they are the only current members of the band. The band's fourth album, Cities in Search of a Heart was released in September 2017 through Rise Records. In May and June 2018, the band supported New Found Glory on their Sick Tour in the US. This week's guest is my very close friend Vinnie Caruana. Vinnie comes from Long Island, NY but now resides in Greenpoint, Brooklyn. In addition to being in I.A.T.A. and The Movielife, he is also in Constant Elevation and is a bandmate to me in Peace'd Out. Vinnie was out in CA working on a project for some friends and I traveled to Bright Mountain studios where we caught up and had a good time hangin. Among many other things, in this conversation we get into The Movie Life's first tour to the west coast, the truth about food in the UK, boring old guy youtube videos we like, English footballers and their horrible taste in music, how the newest I.A.T.A record was written to be the listener's companion, the joys of peeing outside, and his headphone technique while recording vocals. Thank you so much for all of your support! The positive feedback has been overwhelming and I can not express the heights of my gratitude. Thank you so much for listening. VC goes into how the Movielife got on Drive Thru Records, how he helped form I Am the Avalanche & some of the mind-blowing shows Sam & Greg got to see him perform over the years. Although he is from New York, Vinnie calls Philly his home away from home & speaks to the importance Philadelphia has had on his life, musically & otherwise. Now with Know Hope Records, VC tells the story of how he began his solo project, along with the connection he's made with Know Hope. Can you eat a cheesesteak by smelling it? They chat about his relationships and distance as well as the loss of a close friend and as this is the first interview conducted after Dewey’s dad passed away, it touches on that too. They go in depth about Vinnie’s connection with Cannon Beach as well as a few hypothetical scenarios. Don’t miss this one folks, it’s sure to soothe and please even the most hardened soul. The Movielife are back with their first album in 14 years and it's pretty damn good. We chat with guitarist-vocalists Vinnie Caruana and Brandon Reilly about how it all came together. Stereogum's Michael Nelson also joins to take a trip back to the Long Island punk/hardcore scene that birthed the Movielife, Brand New, Taking Back Sunday and less-remembered others (who we give well-deserved shouts to). We also talk about the big Jawbreaker reunion at Riot Fest. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Vinnie Caruana, singer of I Am The Avalanche & The Movielife, just released a solo album on Equal Vision Records. We discuss his solo tour and the hardcore punk scene.
Vinnie Caruana is my new best friend. We had such an awesome time chatting for the show I didn’t want to let him go at the end of our hour. He’s best known for being the singer of bands like The Movielife & I Am The Avalanche but also has an incredibly prolific solo output as well. We discussed Long Island hardcore, corporate songwriting and the early touring years of his life. As Vinnie states towards the end of the show, “Memory lane is a good place to visit”. I am continually surprised that none of the people that I've met whose art has affected my life in significant ways are unpleasant. I always seem to expect some kind of aloof quality in the people I meet whose work has impacted me. It's always wonderful to realise that they are just human like you or I. We put such people on a pedestal; they become more than human because they possess a skill which is unique. So far, everyone I've met has been lovely.Don't tell me that you're not the same.Art which we find monumentally influential affects us for personal reasons. Our heroes become legend to us because their creative output has an ineffable quality which transcends speech, it speaks to us deeply, intimately, profoundly. Sometimes it only resonates with you at a specific point in your life, and as you grow older the influence fades. Some of these influences change into nostalgia. Some are timeless. Vinnie Caruana, like Jim Adkins, Dan Andriano, Ian MacKaye and others before him, sit in that timeless category for me.This is discussed in the podcast, but ‘Forty Hour Train Back to Penn' was a seminal record for me. As someone who had grown up thinking that pop punk was just The Offspring, Green Day and the like, and had subsequently developed an aversion to pop punk after listening to Rise Against, The Movielife seemed like the perfect bridge between those two punk worlds - more aggressive pop punk, which had more emphasis on the punk than the pop.And that's what I think nails the singular genius of Vinnie Caruana and Brandon Reilly. Their talent lies on taking a lot of that punk rock edge and adding some layers of melody and hookiness to it. That in itself is not a new thing, or even a unique thing, but their songwriting style is vastly different to anyone else's. It doesn't feel like it's aping mid 90s pop punk, it feels like a more melodic version of bands like Lifetime or Kid Dynamite, but it still has lashings of influence from great pop songwriters . It's easy to see why Drive-Thru records found them appealing, but to me it always felt like they didn't quite belong there. Then there's the evolution. Vinnie's style changes and matures a lot as his career continues. I am the Avalanche leans much more toward melodic hardcore territory than The Movielife ever did. Peace'd Out is more straight up hardcore and their EP is still a favourite of mine. His solo stuff hews closer to pop more than anything, with many songs on Survivor's Guilt skewing more power pop than anything else, but it still has that unmistakable, undeniable Vinnie Caurana songcraft.I loved talking to this guy. So humble and thankful for what he's been allowed to do, and he seemed like a genuinely happy dude.I hope you enjoy the interview. Our GDPR privacy policy was updated on August 8, 2022.
