We often take for granted our own voices. Not many can speak their mind, especially about controversial things – matters of public concern. We let our ideas, stories, and knowledge stay locked up in our heads, if it means we can avoid conflict or ridicule from those with opposing beliefs. The problem with this is that we live in a society where each of us is called to serve one another. In keeping our thoughts to ourselves, we deny those we are called to serve of valuable learnings. As entrepreneurs, we're unable to serve our clients to the full extent when we don't get to deliver the messages they need to hear. Understandably, most people shy away from the stage because speaking your mind can be quite daunting. This is where Kerry Heaps can help us! Kerry is an entrepreneur of 16 years, and the president of Book.Speak.Repeat. She also hosts a Podcast show of the same name. On top of these, Kerry is also an author and a sought-after speaker. Growing up in an entrepreneurial home was probably one of the biggest influences to her becoming an entrepreneur herself. Kerry saw how her father worked hard in his business but was always able to make time for her as a child. In the beginning, Kerry used to work jobs that others would consider great; however, she knew that there was something more for her. She wanted to be in-charge of her own projects, she wanted to be in control of her time, and more importantly, she wanted to pursue what she was passionate about. Today, Kerry helps others increase their speaking opportunities. She believes that everyone has different ideas they want to share, and different goals they want to achieve. Regardless of what those are, the power to effectively communicate is always a key component to success. How is speaking relevant to business success? How does she reach her desired market? How does she leverage content to augment her visibility strategies? Tune in to gain insights from the experiences of fellow entrepreneurs and learn more about setting your business up for success! Time Stamps:[00:05:25] VIRGINIA: Are you still doing the same business you did 16 years ago when you first went out on your own or have you kind of changed and evolved and stuff?[00:08:52] VIRGINIA: Who is your ideal avatar or client?[00:09:50] VIRGINIA: So how do you get in front of those people?[00:13:34] VIRGINIA: What are a couple of big goals that you're hoping to achieve in the next one, two years?[00:15:05] VIRGINIA: How would that all change your business?[00:23:30] VIRGINIA: Do you feel like there's a roadblock that's kind of stopping you from reaching your goal of getting your books published by the first quarter or having the other people that you've been able to help?[00:25:30] VIRGINIA: What would you say would be the best advice that you have ever received?[00:26:54] VIRGINIA: What would you say the best advice that you have ever given?[00:28:10] VIRGINIA: Is there anything that you would like to share with us that we haven't talked about today? Kerry Heapswww.bookspeakrepeat.comLinkedInhttps://www.linkedin.com/in/kerry-kathleen-heaps-6783a6a6/Youtubehttps://www.youtube.com/channel/UCNLNBsZvoFl3q3Z2mH1nicQFacebookTwitterhttps://twitter.com/kerryheapsAmazon link or link to your bookhttps://www.amazon.com/Kerry-Kathleen-Heaps/e/B071FRV5NF?ref=sr_ntt_srch_lnk_4&qid=1567792219&sr=8-4 Virginia Purnellhttp://facebook.com/distinctdmhttps://www.linkedin.com/in/virginiapurnell/ Virginia PurnellFunnel & Visibility SpecialistDistinct Digital Marketing(833) 762-5336virginia@distinctdigitalmarketing.comwww.distinctdigitalmarketing.comBook a Free Call http://bit.ly/DDMBookACallEC

Not only a wild spirit but a force for change in the world, Virginia Dick joins Arlia today to share her journey and the places it has taken her. Virginia is a successful business owner, tango dancer, and the founder of Roots and Wings Women, an outdoor group for women featuring monthly hikes, connection, and meditation. During the pandemic, Virginia has shifted to sharing her own outdoor adventures and reflections for others to enjoy. She hopes in-person hikes will resume in May 2021. Roots and Wings Women Virginia's blog  Reflection Questions from Virginia: How do I want to walk thru this world? How do I want to form relationships/connections? How do I want to treat the people I am close to? Virginia's bio: I am a mother, entrepreneur, adventure seeker, community builder, and wild spirit.  The opportunity to take care of others, make the world a richer better place for everyone, spread love and warmth, and continually explore and grow are what excite and fuel me.  I want to share this spirit with others to support and encourage them to find their own trails, strengths, and experiences.  As the daughter of a single widowed mother who did not have a college education, I have always been driven by a sense of independence and desire to always be able to provide for my family.  For this reason, I pursued a PhD to allow me to provide and at the same time make a significant difference in the lives of others around me.  The older I get and the more I explore my own path, the more I want to encourage and support other women to get outside of their comfort zone and realize just how strong, resilient, and amazing we each can be.  I have reconnected with my innate connection to the natural world, responding to the draw of outdoors, rawness, and celebrating the interconnectedness of all of the natural world. Nature brings us the opportunity to suspend our assumptions, test ourselves in that safe space, and truly think creatively and expansively.  As I sit under the old live oaks by the coast, my fig trees in my yard, or on the solid rocks of the Appalachian Mountains – I am reminded that it is older than us, carries with it the joys and sadness of generations before us, it is a part of us and therefore is a safe, accepting space to explore and grow.  My greatest feeling and growth occurs in these natural environments where I am rooted in myself and the past but also given the wings to soar and explore. When George Washington died in December 1799, it changed Martha Washington’s legal status. Just as she did when she was widowed for the first time in 1757, Martha once again became an independent person in the eyes of the law. She was no longer in the shadow of her husband’s legal identity. So what did this mean for Martha and other unmarried or widowed elite white women who ran businesses powered by slavery in early Virginia? How did they negotiate contracts, oversee enslaved labor, and manage their estates, all while navigating society’s expectations for women of their status? On today’s episode, Alexi Garrett joins us to discuss three such women – Martha Washington, Catharine Flood McCall, and Annie Henry Christian – who by choice or by fate oversaw major business operations in the early republic. About Our Guest: Alexi Garrett is a Ph.D. candidate in the Corcoran Department of History at the University of Virginia. Her dissertation examines how feme sole businesswomen managed their slave-manned enterprises in revolutionary and early national Virginia. About Our Host: Jim Ambuske leads the Center for Digital History at the Washington Library. He received his Ph.D. in history from the University of Virginia in 2016 with a focus on Scotland and America in an Age of War and Revolution. He is a former Farmer Postdoctoral Fellow in Digital Humanities at the University of Virginia Law Library. At UVA, Ambuske co-directed the 1828 Catalogue Project and the Scottish Court of Session Project. He is the co-author with Randall Flaherty of "Reading Law in the Early Republic: Legal Education in the Age of Jefferson," in The Founding of Thomas Jefferson's University ed. by John A. Rogasta, Peter S. Onuf, and Andrew O'Shaughnessy (Charlottesville: University of Virginia Press, 2019). Ambuske is currently at work on a book entitled Emigration and Empire: America and Scotland in the Revolutionary Era, as well as a chapter on Scottish loyalism during the American Revolution for a volume to be published by the University of Edinburgh Press. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/mountvernon/message

Jim Quist @ACCTheQ - Covering any sport is far more daunting than one might imagine. Even with the resources of say, ESPN or Sports Illustrated. You'd be hard pressed to find just one person involved in any of these efforts. But there are those outside the inner circle who dig into their field of endeavor with a fury. We're fortunate enough to know a handful of those individuals. Among them, Ken Cross who goes that extra step in covering a large chunk of college basketball. The number of people in media who provide coverage from coast-to-coast, who are talking with coaches from the Power 5 to the Mid-Majors is slim. This is what always leads us back to Ken as a guest. Because, as the men's college basketball season nears we want to get more than just a look at the ACC. After all, many of the teams we talk about in the podcast will be woven into the fabric of this season for conference teams. Whether it's a scrimmage or when March Madness rolls around. There's never enough time in the day to talk about a topic that you enjoy. So for future reference, we'll have guests (including a return trip by Ken) on to talk basketball as the year progresses. Ken Cross A look at the AP Top 10 teams beginning with: Villanova *Scrimmage with USC results, Jay Wright has more depth to work with this season.North Carolina *Roy Williams has excellent depth, players that will make an impact (and there are lots of them).Gonzaga *High-end West Coast team, who's the potential WCC Player of the Year?Does the East Coast media underplay/under cover West Coast teams?Maryland *Question marks regarding 'grit', second best in the Big Ten.Florida *The team to watch in the SEC, keeping an eye on Lewis.
