Mobile Housing company, VanHomes, has provided affordable solutions to building granny flats by installing expandable homes on wheels in backyards for elderly relatives and other family members to live in. These homes tap into existing plumbing and water systems and until recently were exempt from council regulations like DA’s. Luke Grant chats with Van Homes Founder and CEO, Vito Russo, about how these vans can assist during a housing crisis and the councils seeking to slap the homes with additional red tape.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Eight Fought to Live: The Story of My AIDS Therapy Group, 1988-1990 by Florence Rosiello, PhD1988: 82,362 gay and bisexual men had AIDS.1989: 100,000 gay and bisexual men had AIDS. 1990: 307,000 gay and bisexual men had AIDS. These are the two years Dr. Rosiello led an AIDS therapy group at Gay Men's Health Crisis in New York City. Within two years each man in her group passed away from AIDS complications. One of these men was Vito Russo, an AIDS activist and historian. This is the story of eight gay men living with advanced AIDS and one inexperienced fresh out of training psychoanalyst. Each man's intimate story is peppered with Dr. Rosiello's anxiety and her growing awareness regarding the importance of emotional authenticity in psychotherapy. The group members had no spare moments for Dr. Rosiello to use her newly learned psychoanalytic techniques. There was only time to be real. Early on these group members pledged to not die. They pledged emotional support for the life of the group. This pledge held true for over a year. Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel - Coach shared nothing was less hot than a male secretary, but Winston felt that even though Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel's eyes “are so pouchy” he was a male secretary who was “still killing it.” Peter Pan - When Jess and Cece were looking at Jess's bras, she mentioned one was called the Peter Pan. Freaky Friday - Cece was considering getting a breast reduction and was looking at Jess's bras, prompting Jess to ask “Are we doing, like, a boob Freaky Friday?” Anderson Cooper - When Nick was pretending to be gay, he referenced Anderson Cooper and his stance on being out. A Christmas Carol - Jess was proving how she could keep up a charade by reciting her one-woman production of A Christmas Carol. Sophie's Choice / Harold & Kumar [Go to White Castle] - When Cece was only going to let Schmidt say goodbye to one of her breasts, Schmidt felt like it was “the ultimate Sophie's Cho-Cho”, referring to the film Sophie's Choice. He also shared that he had named her breasts “Harold” and “Kumar”, the main characters from the film Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle.[Schindler's List] - Schmidt ran in to stop Cece from getting a breast reduction surgery (even though it was only a consultation) and felt like he had saved her. He then referenced the film Schindler's List, saying “I'm your Schindler. One day, your children are gonna put rocks on my grave.” Thanks for listening and stay tuned for Episode 8! Dennis is joined via Zoom by historian JD Doyle to discuss his new book, "1981: My Gay American Road Trip, A Slice Of Our Pre-AIDS Culture." The book is comprised mostly of diary entries JD kept during a road trip he took in 1981 that spanned 24 states,180 gay bars and lots of hot hookups. In the interview, JD discusses how his father encouraged him to take the trip after he got laid off of his chemical engineering job, the '77 Skylark he took the journey in by himself with no air conditioning, using his background in gay media to network and how the entire experience changed him. He also talks about the matter-of-fact way gay men would hook up back then, his attraction to clones and how you could send a message that you were DTF by unbuttoning the bottom button of your Levis 501s. He also talks about his work as a historian and the founder of the Queer Music Heritage radio show, which is how Dennis first met JD in 2000. Other topics include: how the specter of AIDS hangs over the book, staying at the Coral Sands hotel in LA, encountering icons like Vito Russo, Armistead Maupin, Liza Minelli and Sylvester while on his journey, falling in love with and in Houston, Texas and his obsession with sassy T-shirts. www.jddoylearchives.org

Today is the 75th birthday of the activist and film historian Vito Russo. His fighting has made our lives easier. Similar to the “Bechdel Test,” which examines the way female characters are portrayed and situated within a narrative, GLAAD developed its own set of criteria to analyze how LGBTQ characters are included within a film and named it “The Vito Russo Test”. To pass the Vito Russo Test, the following must be true: 1. The film contains a character that is identifiably lesbian, gay, bisexual, and/or transgender. 2. That character must not be solely or predominantly defined by their sexual orientation or gender identity. I.E. they are made up of the same sort of unique character traits commonly used to differentiate straight characters from one another. 3. The LGBTQ character must be tied into the plot in such a way that their removal would have a significant effect. Meaning they are not there to simply provide colorful commentary, paint urban authenticity, or (perhaps most commonly) set up a punchline. The character should “matter.” The world is a better place because he was in it and still feels the loss that he has left. HAPPY LGBT HISTORY MONTH Making Gay History has been a top listen of mine for years, so when I started doing this series I knew that I wanted to ask Eric Marcus to join me for an episode. I've listened to the Making Gay History podcast and Eric's soothing voice so many times, so when he said he's be on the Queer Margins I was over the moon. We spoke about Making Gay History (obviously), his life in the 80s, living through the AIDs epidemic, his life now, lockdown (again, obviously), interviewing Marsha P Johnson and the similarities between our podcasts... I really love Eric's podcast and Eric was so nice and encouraging, he was really great to chat to. Also- I've been receiving newsletters from Eric's neighbourhood and it's the perfect amount of escapism right now. Vito Russo's legacy—as a film historian, activist, and co-founder of GLAAD and ACT UP—is hard to overstate. In this 1988 interview, legacy was also very much on Vito's mind: it was the height of the AIDS epidemic, which had claimed Vito's boyfriend, and now Vito was sick, too. Emmy Winner Charlotte Robinson talks about the launch of her new boutique LGBTQ streaming network OUTTAKE MEDIA™. The site is very user-friendly and device savvy. The state of the art homepage is divided into three categories. First there is a widescreen video player that showcases original programming. Since this is the 15th anniversary of marriage equality in Massachusetts the first showcase highlighted is Charlotte’s short film OUTTAKE that chronicles the historic events that took place in 2004. The film was shot by Kirsten Martin and narrated by Arline Isaacson Co Chair of the Massachusetts Gay and Lesbian Political Caucus. The next category is “WE LOVE” and features organizations and companies that have been very supportive of our LGBTQ community. Kicking off this section includes “The Dinah” Palm Springs celebrating 30 years of this iconic lesbian event, “Marilyn Rosen Presents” that will be featuring performances and conversations with A-List artists and GLAAD the global LGBTQ media advocacy organization that has been supportive of OUTTAKE MEDIA™ since it first launched in 2007. The last section on the homepage is “VISIT” that highlights two LGBTQ destinations: Provincetown, Massachusetts and Greater Fort Lauderdale, Florida. The new “STREAM” page features Filmmaker Jeffrey Schwarz fabulous documentary “VITO” about pioneer gay activist Vito Russo, tello Films talk show “Happy Wife Happy Life” with Bridget McManus, Karman Kregloe, Cat Davis and Kristen Smith and concluding the streaming page is “TransMilitary” a must-watch documentary especially with the current administration’s assault on our transgender troops. All content on OUTTAKE MEDIA™ will be updated on a regular basis. We talked to Charlotte about her inspiration for creating this fabulous new media concept and how she designed it in a way that it will take on a life of its own. Charlotte Robinson’s broadcast career spans over decades. She was the first woman audio engineer at WCVB-TV in Boston and then worked at ABC New York and NBC New York until she joined CBS New York where she was on staff for 5 years. She worked on the CBS Evening News with Walter Cronkite and Dan Rather and then joined CBS Sports where she earned an Emmy Award for NFL Today. She left CBS in the mid eighties to live authentically and pursue her producing ambitions. OUTTAKE MEDIA™ is fed first hand news and content by organizations and publicists receiving about 100 requests a day. Since 2007 it has built a huge global audience with millions of viewers. In these difficult political times Charlotte always understood that the media is extremely powerful. Unfortunately it has somewhat backfired by electing Trump and she hopes that OUTTAKE MEDIA™ continues providing some sanity for people living in an insane world. This week's episode is with the man behind one of my favourite podcasts, 'Making Gay History' - Mr Eric Marcus. What an honour! Eric has recorded decades worth of interviews with LGBTQ heroes and civil rights activists. Some of them extremely well known - Ellen DeGeneres, Larry Kramer, Vito Russo and Marsha P. Johnson for example - and others that should and will become better known due to the type of documentation Eric has put together. We chat about his work as an author, working with Robbie Rogers and Greg Louganis. We discuss his book 'Is it A Choice?' which helps to answer myriad questions that often pop up regarding homosexuality. This is one of my favourite conversations and sincerely hope you enjoy this as much as I did. The Russo Test In this episode authors Jove Belle and Blythe Rippon chat about the Russo Test. The Bechdel test has been around since it first appeared in Dykes to Watch Out For in 1985, but it moved to general parlance in the 2000s. Perhaps it's impressive, then, that we learned about the Vito Russo test a mere five years after it was introduced in 2012. The test sets a very low bar (like the Bechdel test) for measuring positive representation of queer characters. We evaluate its efficacy and discuss some movies and television characters that pass it. About Jove And Blythe Both are published authors and all round badass women in their own right. Jove is also on the Women And Words podcast where she and Andi do a roundup of the week’s happenings on their website.
