Max Wilbert is a writer, organizer, and wilderness guide. A third-generation dissident, he came of age in a family of anti-war and undoing racism activists in post-WTO Seattle. He is the editor-in-chief of the Deep Green Resistance News Service. His latest book is the forthcoming Bright Green Lies. His first book, an essay collection called We Choose to Speak, was released in 2018. He lives in Oregon. Today we talk about actions against a proposed lithium mine in Nevada.
We so often tell ourselves a lie that "we HAVE to do" something. I often remind my clients that we don't have to take care of our kids, go to our jobs or be responsible. It's simply NOT true that we HAVE to do all those things. We CHOOSE to do them because we don't like the alternative. WE simply forget that we chose to do them. That's it. So when you catch yourself telling yourself that you HAVE to do it, remind yourself that you actually don't HAVE to do anything. Then ask yourself 'what do i want to do?'?
Max Wilbert is a third-generation organizer who grew up in Seattle's post-WTO anti-globalization and undoing racism movement. He is a co-founder of the group Deep Green Resistance and longtime board member of Fertile Ground, a small, grassroots environmental non-profit with no employees and no corporate funding. His first book, a collection of pro-feminist and environmental essays, was recently released. It’s called We Choose to Speak, and Other Essays. He is also the co-author of the forthcoming book "Bright Green Lies" (with Derrick Jensen and Lierre Keith) which looks at the problems with mainstream so-called "solutions" such as solar panels, electric cars, recycling, and green cities. The book makes the case that these approaches fail to protect the planet and aim at protecting empire from the effects of peak oil and ecological collapse.
Rarely do we see people having a hard time. People usually post their wins not their losses. We find ways to blame everyone else for things that could have easily been avoided. OR we blame ourselves and forgive the person with the transgression BUT never forgive ourselves. We also find ways to blame all parties involved when there shouldn't have been a party at all. NOT everyone sins the same. NOT everyone loves the same. NOT everyone gives a reason why they left. NOT everyone is loyal to the soil. If we can just take the piece that was supposed to teach us we could raise our vibration. We CHOOSE to sit in our mess and act like we are blessed. That is a lot of the reason people don't help you. You look like you got it all figured out. We need to start showing people that we DO NOT have it all figured out. In this time of pandemic, everyone needs to do their job in this life. If you don't know what your job is, you likely aren't doing it.
This author discussion features Sakeena Everett, Andrea Zellner, Anna Smith, Sam Reed, Joe Dillon, and Remi Kalir. The piece being discussed, "'Untold Stories': Cultivating Consequential Writing with a Black Male Student through a Critical Approach to Metaphor," shares Sakeena Everett’s work learning alongside a student in a summer program called “We Choose to Learn.” This university-based program was designed to prepare high school students of color—like her student Shawn—for college, and to engage them in learning opportunities that also drew upon their career interests in education. This rich ethnographic account calls attention to the way in which Everett supported Shawn to develop writing that lead him toward action against inequity. Read more at NWP's Educator Innovator.
"Life is 10% what happens to you and 90% how you react." - Charles Swindoll.Have you ever known someone who just seems to have everything fall into their lap? They appear to be liked by everyone, they radiate confidence and positivity, and life just seems to go their way?Conversely, there's always that one person, the glass-half-empty guy, who has a problem for every solution, complains all day and is generally quite an energy vampire. The difference in these two people is not their looks, their circumstance, their upbringing, their financial status, or anything external. It is their perception. One of the greatest assets we have available to our brilliant minds, is the ability to alter our perception to everything around us and attach any meaning to circumstance that we like.Shakespeare said 'nothing is good or bad, our thinking makes it so.'Our power of perception allows us to attach any meaning we like to a neutral event; and that is all it is...neutral. We CHOOSE what meaning to give to circumstance, and that is where our power lies.We are not a victim of circumstance, we are victims to our interpretations of the circumstance.Tune in to learn how perception adjustment and reframe is the mindset strategy that can change your life.

Everything in your life is actually 2 things.... The Wanted, and the UNwanted of it. Each moment presents us with a choice... It asks us what position we want to choose about whatever it is showing us... Do we want to feel the Wanted ... Meaning the way that we want to feel when imagining something .... or do we want to feel the UNwanted.. which is being in a negative state because we don't yet have the thing ... SCHRODINGER's CAT is a thought experiment from the 30's that shows us just how 2 possible outcomes exist at all times.... to everything we are experiencing ... Positive ... or Negative .. WE CHOOSE : ))))))) We dive right into it in this Episode !! Thank you so much for being here with me !!
Today's show is about being MESSY. Lawd... the dictionaries you giving to people...they aren't using them. There are some people that thrive in chaos. Back in the day, chaos was all I knew. Each consequence I waited for and received. At this stage in the game of life, I am about peace. Not peace...as in I won't get crunk. I need peace as in....good intentions and good karma. This show is a reminder to people that the demons within us do NOT die. They are alive and well. In my latest book, I describe how demonic presence at times saved me. This show is a reminder that a lot of us old heads still know how and what to do. We CHOOSE to let you slide. Now all yall want to ice skate? NO!
Forgiven people are to be forgiving people. But HOW do we forgive when we have been hurt? We Choose to return evil with good.
This week I got carried away after SpaceX tweeted video from the Falcon Heavy STP-2 mission where the camera was attached to the fairing they recovered thanks to Ms. Tree. It's really amazing how much inspiration and learning you get for everyone when a company like SpaceX takes NASA's tact of sharing their development for everyone to see. The simple act of sharing a video of what it looks like to recover a fairing from a rocket literally gave me enough energy and excitement to write a 20 minute episode. Imagine what else and who else this act of free sharing is inspiring. Which leads me to the second point of this week's podcast - from my research into Space History, thanks to the book Chasing the Moon. Space Programs that do great things take a while to accomplish - 5-10 years. If we learn anything from the 50th Anniversary of the Apollo 11 moon landing, its that the trend shows interest in the program fades before the mission is finished and fully funded. How does NASA adjust in 2019 to make sure that support stays with the Artemis program so that we see the first woman and next man to walk on the moon in 2024? I also finish with my sporadic impression of JFK as I go through Part 2 of the "We choose to go to the Moon" speech at Rice University in 1962. As part of the lead up to the Apollo11 moon landing 50th anniversary, I want to start by sharing a part of one of JFK's most famous space speeches and moments. In Orbital News, we review the night launch of the third Falcon Heavy mission (STP-2) and give some reusability stats. We also discuss one of the payloads on board from the Planetary Society, as well as a follow-up of the MakeItRain mission from Rocket Lab. I wish you a happy Independence Day! Enjoy the week. As this is one of my favorite holidays, I share my thoughts on what independence means to me this year. I can't believe I've done it for each year of the podcast. It's wild! “Being bored is a choice. There is no such thing as boredom in the world. There are only people choosing to be bored.” ~Dr. Wayne Dyer The fact that we are alive is amazing. We don't get to be bored. We start off the show with some poetry:Even When There's Little Choice, We Choose by Nicholas GordonFor our In The News segment on this show we take our one and only looks at the Republican and Democrat primary season. We have a clip from each side that proves the two party political machine is still very much in control and knows what they are doing. If that isn't convincing enough, we also have an audio clip from Leslie Moonves, the president and CEO of CBS Corporation, explaining to shareholders how Donald Trump is great for business. Next up we have a quick Activist Cinema segment looking at the #OscarsSoWhite "conversation" surrounding this years Academy Awards and why it's great to draw attention to the racism in the entertainment industry...but it's still and industry and the Oscars are just their Employee of the Year awards. So don't watch them. [Click to Listen]
