Memphis prosecutors have dropped the charges. P. Moses and her attorney will join us tonight. A lawsuit claiming the new Mississippi voting districts to Supreme Court justices will deny Black voters an equal chance to participate in the political process.  One of the attorneys from the ACLU of Mississippi is here to explain. The car company is back funding, as they said, "some members of Congress." She was a freelance reporter for the CBS Corporation.  She said the media company disregarded labor laws, and its pay practices disproportionately impacted women, people of color, and members of the LGBTQ communities.  So Silva Harapetian filed a lawsuit on behalf of all CBS freelancers.  The trial will begin this week.  Silva will join us to talk about how it's been for her since filing the lawsuit.    is headed to federal court this week to face accusations of wage theft, a pay practice that disproportionately impacts women, people of color, and members of the LGBTQ communities. Coca-Cola C2 (also referred to as Coke C2, C2 Cola, or simply C2) was a cola-flavored beverage introduced by The Coca-Cola Company first in Japan, then later on June 7, 2004 in the United States (and shortly thereafter, Canada), in response to the low-carbohydrate diet trend. This Coke product was marketed as having half the carbohydrates, sugars and calories compared to standard Coca-Cola. It contains aspartame, acesulfame potassium, and sucralose in addition to the high fructose corn syrup typically found in cola beverages distributed in America. Aside from the high fructose corn syrup, one 12-ounce can of Coca-Cola C2 contains 19 mg of aspartame, 4 mg of sucralose and 19 mg of acesulfame potassium. The packaging design differs from other Coke products in that the logos are printed in black. For marketing on radio and television, and movie theaters the Queen song "I Want to Break Free" was used. When it was first introduced, though, The Rolling Stones song "You Can't Always Get What You Want" was used. American sales did not live up to early expectations mainly due to customer disinterest in a mid-calorie soda, and partly due to the success of Coca-Cola Zero, a zero-calorie version of Coca-Cola; however, Coca-Cola said the brand would remain in its lineup, even while Pepsi discontinued its equivalent product, Pepsi Edge, in late 2005, just one year after its introduction. Many store shelves completely replaced the product with Coca-Cola Zero due to display, shelving and storage limitations, and with the introduction of Coca-Cola Cherry Zero, the product disappeared from all store shelves where it had previously remained, and in 2013, it was replaced by Coca-Cola Life, which was marketed for using Stevia as opposed to artificial sweeteners. The United Paramount Network (UPN) was an American broadcast television network that launched on January 16, 1995. The network was originally owned by Chris-Craft Industries' United Television; Viacom (through its Paramount Television unit, which produced most of the network's series) turned the network into a joint venture in 1996 after acquiring a 50% stake in the network, and subsequently purchased Chris-Craft's remaining stake in 2000. In December 2005, UPN was spun off to CBS Corporation when Viacom split into two separate companies. CBS Corporation and Time Warner jointly announced on January 24, 2006 that the companies would shut down UPN and competitor The WB to launch a new joint venture network later that year. UPN ceased broadcasting on September 15, 2006, with The WB following suit two days later. Select programs from both networks moved to the new network, The CW, when it launched on September 18, 2006. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/dwight-allen/message

Intro Randy is way too excited about his new bed that he purchased online! Sleeping on a Toxic Bed? • There have been lawsuits against Tempur-Pedic, due to them containing VOC's ○ The mattresses always have a chemical smell when you first get them. § The companies even tell you that you can let them sit for a day or so to off-gas. • The VOCs found in mattresses, you're already breathing in. ○ According to the CDC, "VOCs are found in paint, organic solvents, furniture, foams, and degreasing agents. Formaldehyde is one of the well-known VOCs, and it's concentration is easier to measure than many of the others". § Source: Mattress Journal - http://www.mattressjournal.com/tempur-pedic-sued-over-vocs-memory-foam-safety/ • I felt like I needed a Tempur-Pedic. I owned one years ago - forget the fact that it has an extreme chemical smell when you first buy it. I couldn't forget it this time. The pros were not outweighing the cons: Going into a store, and trying out mattresses that other people are laying on, with their head in the same spot, just gives me a bad feeling. ○ I decided to give the online mattress market a try. Online Shopping for Mattresses • For the last few years, I'd occasionally hear one of my favorite tech podcasters, Leo Laporte, mention an online mattress brand called Casper. I didn't go with them first, it got me to thinking, maybe I could just Bing search for Natural Organic mattresses. Among my search results each time was a YouTube channel called "The Slumber Yard". ○ Link: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCvCrsxCVVm0TM5kfE0BRG7A ○ Riz knows - https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCAf9vHS_4I9lSu-7gYhkzaw § It's not obvious in the videos, as it first appears as just a guy reviewing mattresses. Digging into the YouTube channel, and going to their about page, you will find the RizKnows website, which sort of reminds me of a "SlickDeals" type site. On their About-Us page, is Riz himself, aka. Jeff Rizzo. □ I love this guy's site and team. It really gives me a good feeling that all of the reviews are completely unbiased. Yes, they need to get paid to do this, and it's open and clear about it on their website and even their YouTube channel, where it mentions referral links. That's extremely common and I'm glad that their site is not littered with Ads! □ The Riz Knows teams does other reviews on things such as Wearable Tech, Audio, Apparel and Footwear, Cameras and Drones, sports and outdoors, and smart home items. Um, SUBSCRIBED! ® They're kind of like a mini-CNET without all the commercial crap/ads, as they're owned by CBS Interactive, within the CBS Corporation. • After watching a bunch of mattress review videos, Christa and I were able to narrow things down to our favorite candidate mattress. We went with a brand called Awara: https://www.awarasleep.com/ ○ After watching the review video, we learned the mattress they sell had all of our favorite characteristics and the most insanely-cool warranty in the business. Hear how women can build better businesses that thrive!   I was hunting around for leading women in the financial services sector as I was writing my book about exceptional women smashing the myths of what women can and cannot do. Lisa Caputo’s name came up and having been an ex-Citibanker for many years, I was interested in what she had done there for women. Lisa's entire career has been amazing, and as a powerful role model, her story should be told. I wanted to share her story with others, both men and women, to celebrate how women can build better, together. In our podcast, she talks about her own personal growth and those who helped her on her journey. Listen in; I know you'll learn so much. This is about much more than just women and financial services It is about how Lisa has been part of the transformation of this country over the past several decades, helping craft the voices of different presidents and presidential candidates, and helping us better understand what was happening at the time. Her role in industry, whether at Disney or Citi or Travelers, has been equally impressive as she has built businesses and helped change them. An early career in politics As Lisa will share with you, after graduate school she was highly influenced by one of her professors and decided to look for a job in government, becoming the national issues press secretary during the 1988 Dukakis-Bentsen presidential campaign. Next, she became press secretary to US Senator Tim Wirth of Colorado and US Representative Bob Traxler of Michigan. At the 1992 Democratic National Convention, she ran Al Gore's media operations. After working on the 1992 Clinton-Gore campaign, she was then asked to become Hillary Clinton's press secretary, at the age of 27. She oversaw the communications and media relations operations for the First Lady and the First Family, as well as serving as chief spokesperson and deputy assistant to President Bill Clinton. In 2008, she was a senior advisor to Hillary Clinton's presidential campaign, frequently being seen on CNN, MSNBC and other TV networks, providing analysis on the 2008 and 2016 presidential races. Making her mark in the corporate world After her time in politics, Lisa served as Vice President of Corporate Communications for the CBS Corporation, then joined Disney and then CitiBank, where she was Senior Managing Director of Business Operations and Planning in Citi's Global Consumer Group. She also served as Chief of Staff to the Global Consumer Group CEO, where she worked with senior managers to develop and implement strategies to expand the business and coordinate business activities across the Global Consumer Group, as well as across other Citi businesses. At the request of the Citi CEO, Lisa also developed a strategic plan and organizational structure for the Citi Foundation to focus the company's philanthropic giving. Women & Co. When she first joined Citi, Lisa started Women & Co. which provides solutions to address the distinct financial needs of women in their various life stages. Under her leadership, Women & Co. grew from concept to startup to revenue generator, with its members now accounting for over $30 billion in assets under management at Citi.  A highly-recognized leader and role model for women In addition, Lisa is a television commentator and public speaker on current events and politics, and a contributor to O Magazine. She has been an NBC and MSNBC political analyst for numerous presidential election cycles and has served as co-host of CNN's Crossfire and CNBC and MSNBC's Equal Time. Today, she is Executive Vice President and Chief Marketing and Communications Officer for The Travelers Companies, Inc.  Lisa has been named the AWNY Advertising Woman of the Year and one of Ad Age's Advertising Women to Watch. She is a NYWICI Matrix Winner for outstanding achievements in the communications industry and has been recognized as the Direct Marketing International Woman of the Year. She was selected as a Young Global Leader of The World Economic Forum and was named one of "New York's Rising Stars: 40 under 40" by Crain's New York Business. Since 2009 there has been three new Star Trek movies, one new series with another four reportedly in development. Yet enthusiasm for the franchise among die hard fans is low.  What’s going on? We’ll explore what is going on in Star Trek today in this episode. What's Going on? When it comes to connected TV and film universes, Star Trek was the first franchise to do it.  Not Marvel. But that might not happen anymore.  And it all has to do with who owns Star Trek.  But trying to figure out which corporate entity owns the property can get a bit confusing. And it’s been that way from the beginning. A lot of people think Gene Roddenberry and his production company Norway were the original owners.  They weren’t. The original owner was Desilu Studios and in 1968 Paramount Pictures, itself owned by Gulf + Western, purchased Desilu and Star Trek along with it. In 1994, Viacom purchased Paramount for $9.75 Billion!  Star Trek was still controlled and operated by Paramount, the franchise essentially had a new owner. This next fact seems unrelated, but it isn’t.  In 2000, Viacom merged with CBS Corporation. Interestingly, Viacom was created by  CBS back in 1952 as the network’s syndication division. Then it was called CBS Films but was later renamed Viacom. It was spun off into its own company in 1971. Back to the year 2000, and Viacom was then owned by National Amusements.  The majority owner of that company was Sumner Redstone. In 2005, Redstone decided to break Viacom apart into two companies, essentially undoing the 1999 merger. The entity known as Viacom became CBS Corporation. It owned all TV and radio divisions, along with Simon and Schuster publishing. CBS would also own all of the television properties, including Star Trek. The head of the new CBS Corporation was Les Moonves. The second company created was a new version of Viacom.  It held Paramount studios, MTV and BET networks. Viacom with Paramount, retains the Star Trek feature film library, and according to some, the rights to make new feature films. But the exact terms of the rights, and who can do what are not clearly known.  And this is where things get a bit murky. But you needed this background to follow and understand what’s happening today.

The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) is defending its use of a previously secret program used to monitor potential security threats at airports and on planes. TSA then analyzes additional information available through law enforcement agencies and other databases. The TSA has drawn criticism at times for its intrusive security measures, and lawmakers have scrutinized the effectiveness of the air marshal program. As The Boston Globe’s report made the rounds on Sunday and Monday, some privacy experts expressed concerns that the Quiet Skies initiative could cross a line if it is too selective in who it targets. Les Moonves remains the CEO of CBS — for now. The company confirmed to Yahoo Entertainment that no action was taken at Monday’s board meeting, just three days after Moonves was accused of sexual misconduct by six women. CBS Corporation also announced that its board of directors “is in the process of selecting outside counsel to conduct an independent investigation.” While Moonves’s fate apparently is in the hands of a third party, his wife, Julie Chen, is standing by his side.

Starman Too many channels, not enough listeners, pools of red ink -- welcome to the world of satellite radio. Despite its myriad of advantages and incorporation into many new cars and trucks, both Sirius and XM Radio seemed more hooked to financial life support than to fleets of vehicles the last few years. It was as if the business was crying for, as David Bowie put it, "a Starman waiting in the sky" to supernaturally save the service. Well, that celebrity executive landed at Sirius some four years ago in the form of Mel Karmazin with a resume that included running Infinity Broadcasting, CBS Radio and as well as the entire CBS Corporation. Since his arrival he has not only increased subscriptions but more importantly brokered a merger between the two services believing that one strong company can prosper in this less than predictable economy. This week Autoline welcomes Mel Karmazin, CEO of Sirius XM Radio. Host John McElroy along with panelists Neal Boudette from The Wall Street Journal and Jeff Gilbert of WWJ Newsradio Detroit talk to this Hall of Fame broadcast executive about his survival plans for Sirius XM and the important role the auto industry plays in the process. And don't forget you can catch more with Mel Karmazin at our website (http://www.autoline.tv/) in our Internet-only segment, Autoline EXTRA, as well as our brand new global automotive newscast Autoline Daily as soon as you see this e-mail. So if you'd like to know what the "Starman of Sirius XM" plans for the media in your car or truck, check out this week's Autoline.
