This episode of The Athletes Compass explores the role of heat training in endurance performance. Dr. Paul Laursen, Marjaana Rakai, and Paul Warloski discuss how controlled heat exposure leads to increased plasma volume, red blood cell production, and overall endurance gains—similar to the effects of altitude training. They also provide practical tips on integrating heat sessions into training, balancing active and passive heat exposure, and avoiding potential risks. If you're training for a hot race or simply looking for a new performance edge, this episode will challenge your perspective on heat adaptation.Key TakeawaysHeat training expands plasma volume first, triggering an increase in red blood cell count—a physiological boost similar to altitude training. One to three heat sessions per week can create meaningful adaptation, with regularity being key to maintaining benefits.Beginners should start with lower-intensity aerobic sessions, while experienced athletes may combine heat training with high-intensity workouts.Passive heat exposure (sauna, hot tub) complements active heat training and aids in adaptation.Heat training should be progressive—gradual exposure over time builds tolerance and reduces risk.Overheating can be dangerous—athletes should have cooling strategies in place (ice baths, cold showers) to recover efficiently.Elite athletes like Christian Blumenfeld used extreme heat training for Olympic success, but it's crucial to adapt it to personal limits.Paul Warloski - Endurance, Strength Training, YogaMarjaana Rakai - Tired Mom Runs - Where fitness meets motherhood.

The Green Building Council says the Government's proposal to simplify insulation standards does not address the growing issue of overheating new builds.
Do you ever get the feeling New Zealand just doesn’t know how to build houses properly? We had the leaky homes crisis – where timber-framed homes built from 1988 to 2004 were not fully weather-tight. And now, construction experts are warning that tens of thousands of Auckland families will suffer in overheating terraced houses unless designs change. Terraced houses are being built at pace in Auckland, with even more expected after the Government mooted 55,000 new ones to be fast-tracked through the consent process. Today on The Front Page, we’re joined by New Zealand Green Building Council business development manager Matthew Cutler-Welsh to dig into what’s gone wrong with these new houses. Follow The Front Page on iHeartRadio, Apple Podcasts, Spotify or wherever you get your podcasts. Over the weekend, Ukrainian forces intensified their offensive in the region, gaining tactical advances in multiple sectors. Ukrainian forces appear to have maintained the pressure. While Ukraine earns military advances, the Russian economy is worsening because of high inflation and interest rates. Patrick Bury joined Pat to discuss.

The West Contra Costa Unified School District promised back in 2019 that Stege Elementary School would get a complete redesign to attract more students and more experienced teachers and turn around low test scores, high suspension rates and chronic absenteeism. The school building itself was supposed to be remodeled by the 2020-21 school year. But now, a group of teachers, staff and parents are suing the district, alleging that it failed to address severely poor building conditions and teacher vacancies, violating the rights of students, the majority of whom are Black, Latino, low-income and English learners. What happened? And what is the significance of this lawsuit statewide? An estimated one in two people will experience degrading environmental conditions this century and will be faced with the difficult question of whether to leave their homes. Will you be among those who migrate in response to climate change? If so, where will you go?Abrahm Lustgarten is an investigative reporter, author, and filmmaker whose work focuses on human adaptation to climate change. His 2010 Frontline documentary The Spill, which investigated BP's company culture, was nominated for an Emmy. His 2015 longform series Killing the Colorado, about the draining of the Colorado river, was nominated for a Pulitzer Prize. Lustgarten is a senior reporter at ProPublica, and contributes to publications like The New York Times Magazine and The Atlantic. His research on climate migration influenced President Biden's creation of a climate migration study group. This is also the topic of his newly published book, On The Move: The Overheating Earth and the Uprooting of America in which he explores how climate change is uprooting American lives.“Living in California, I've just come to accept the unsettledness of this era we're moving into. And I think that's really how I see the future. You know, we're living in an era of disruption, and there are others I talk to and write about in the book who also muse about the possibility of a more nomadic future. That maybe home isn't a permanent place with deep roots but is a transient place with shallow roots or two places that you alternate between. I don't think that climate change in an apocalyptic sense is a foregone conclusion. Our efforts to change that trajectory to lower emissions will change how severe the impacts are in the future. So I really want people to understand that. And I really want my kids to understand that. I also trust that I want people to understand that we might be entering an era of unprecedented change and disruption. This is the life that we've got and I feel great sadness for the things that I know that we've lost, but younger people don't have that perspective, which in this particular context is maybe a relief, and all there is, is what's in front of them. And, there is an ample supply of natural beauty of rejuvenating resources and inspiring resources in our natural environment and in the people around us. I would just say, as we all settle into a less predictable future with all sorts of bumpy roads and rollercoaster rides, that we also stay focused on experiencing what's in the moment, in that beauty and in that community.”https://abrahm.comhttps://us.macmillan.com/books/9780374171735/onthemovewww.creativeprocess.infowww.oneplanetpodcast.orgIG www.instagram.com/creativeprocesspodcast

In episode 205 of America Adapts, Doug Parsons hosts Abrahm Lustgarten, an investigative climate reporter and author from Propublica. Abrahm discusses his work on climate change and migration and highlights his coverage of various climate-related issues such as water scarcity, sea level rise and wildfire. Abrahm's book, "On the Move," explores climate-driven migration in the United States. He traveled the country learning how areas are preparing, or not, for the impacts of climate change. He goes on the ground and interviews people in the heart of these climate impact zones. You'll learn the unique struggles people have as it becomes increasingly expensive…and dangerous…to live in these impact zones. We also discuss how the media is doing covering climate migration and what the government can potentially do to help with this growing threat. And an all new episode tradition, Doug's "Hot Take"! Topics covered: Abrahm Lustgarten and climate journalism Abrahm's Book: "On the Move" Reporting at ProPublica Winners and Losers of Climate Migration Ecological Impact of Climate Migration Media Coverage of Climate Migration Book Promotion and Tour Future Project on Societal Conflict from Climate Migration Quotes from Abrahm Lustgarten in episode: I think all we can say about that is that we all can anticipate an era of great change and I think it'll scramble the map. It's hard to know when that'll happen, when there's a tipping point, both in terms of people moving or what that means for politics. But I think that all that I could say about that is that I wouldn't be surprised if 25 years from now, the electoral map looks entirely different from how it does today in part in response to the kind of changes that I write about… So we're having this kind of scary conversation about the economics of home values in California. And then that particular day, I was looking out my window into the wildland urban interface in the suburban place that I that I live in. And I was like, Hey, wait, Jesse, I live right one of these spots you're describing, should I and he just cut me off and presumed my question was, should I live in a place that I live in? should I move? And he was like, yes, get out of there. You got to go. That was three or four years ago and I haven't moved yet. Check out the America Adapts Media Kit here! Welcome to another addition in our long series of commentary about the comprehensive signs of overreaching and overtraining. This content is inspired by the incredibly thorough look at all aspects of overtraining and remedies that is contained in the Primal Fitness Expert Certification course, and this topic is such an important one to discuss—it is so helpful and supportive to have extensive knowledge about how body works, as well as how it can fool you by over producing stress hormones and making you feel great, not sore, and full of energy so you continue to train harder and harder. As you will hear, you will always crash and burn eventually, so having an understanding the nuances of this and being able to identify the little signs that come up so you can take corrective action and back off (even if you're feeling hyped up and energized to do more training) is an integral part of fitness and overall wellness. Tune into the episode to learn what excessive thirst often signifies, the symptoms of chronic dehydration and failure to hydrate optimally, the importance of rehydration and why merely chugging a gallon of water after a sweaty workout isn't enough, how to ensure that your body absorbs all the fluid it needs, how you can determine when your autonomic nervous system is out of balance, and more!
