Cape Town takes second stab at rolling out electric buses for its MyCiTi service

This audio is brought to you by Endress and Hauser, a leading supplier of products, solutions and services for industrial process measurement and automation. The City of Cape Town should have battery electric buses (e-buses) operational on its MyCiTi bus service by 2027, says Urban Mobility MMC Rob Quintas. It will be the city's second stab at rolling out the zero-emission technology, following an unsuccessful attempt as an early adopter in 2018. E-buses has since experienced significant progress in terms of range and technology. Quintas tells Engineering News Online that the Cape Town council gave the Urban Mobility Directorate the go-ahead to proceed with adopting alternate energy buses as part of MyCiTi Phase 2A. Phase 2A will expand the bus service to run between Mitchells Plain, Khayelitsha, Wynberg and Claremont. "At this point in time it is foreseen that the first routes will be operational by mid-2027, if all goes as planned," says Quintas. However, the service will not only use e-buses. Cape Town's Climate Change Action Plan commits the city to transition to electric or alternative-fuel-powered freight, bus, taxi and passenger vehicles by 2050, explains Quintas. In terms of this plan, the city's Urban Mobility Directorate is mandated to develop a procurement strategy for low-carbon-emission vehicles and fuel technologies in pursuit of carbon neutrality. This initiative also aligns with the national Department of Transport's Green Transport Strategy (2018 - 2050) which states that 10% of municipal bus fleets must use clean energy within the next 10 to 20 years. "As such, the directorate has initiated a procurement strategy aimed at zero-emission vehicle solutions for the city's bus fleet," notes Quintas. "The first step was to identify the most suitable alternative or green-vehicle and fuel-technology options for the MyCiTi bus service, supported by the necessary infrastructure. "The directorate conducted a feasibility study of alternative-energy vehicles, including compressed natural gas, hydrogen electric, battery electric, hybrid and Euro VI [internal combustion engine] buses. "Key recommendations from this study advocate for the adoption of a dual strategy, involving the acquisition of both [cleaner] Euro VI diesel buses and battery electric buses for the upcoming procurement cycle for the roll-out of the second phase of the MyCiTi bus service," says Quintas. Quintas emphasises that the city will continue to investigate alternative fuel options given the continuous technology changes within the zero- and low-emissions transport industry. "These need to be monitored to ensure the city procures the best available technology at the time of procurement."

He considers stone size, stone density, preexisting comorbidities, and patient preferences. He uses CT scans, retrograde pyelograms, and flexible ureteroscopy to study the anatomy of the patient. Next, he explains how he gets his own access through retrograde access while the patient is in the supine position. Then, he discusses the trademark patent he currently holds for a PCNL kit, which includes a puncture wire, sheath, and coaxial microintroducer. The kit allows urologists to put a retrograde puncture wire through a flexible ureteroscope. He notes that this kit decreases renal trauma and allows the papillary puncture to be aligned with the infundibulum. He also reflects on the challenges of developing his kit and finding industry partners to support development. Although he had to wait 7 years to commercialize his technology, he saw the prolonged time as a benefit because he was able to improve its design before commercial release. Finally, he explains his technique for using the PCNL kit and offers advice for different difficult scenarios during PCNL. He emphasizes that, in the end, skilled surgeons ensure the success of PCNLs, not just the equipment they use. --- RESOURCES ReviveRX https://reviverx.com/ --- The BackTable Urology Podcast is a resource for practicing urologists to learn tips, techniques, and practical advice from their peers in the field. Testimony of Nathan Charles 1 February 2023 Nathan says that the life he lived before knowing Christ was a messed up one in which he had no purpose. Even before entering high school, he was already drinking and smoking dagga. It was in high school where he formed part of a group and started using hard drugs like tik, heroine and mandrakes. By the age of twenty he was messed up and homeless, having no purpose, hope and direction. He explains that he simply did not know how to overcome his addiction. Many attempted but failed in helping him because his focus was just to obtain his next hit. “I remember I got locked up for the weekend, came out the Monday and went home. My parents did not want me to come into the house, so I sat in front of the door.I then heard people coming down, making a noise, and started to testify about Jesus and I can remember my mom coming saying, you need to listen to this, and those people started to evangelize and minister. One of my friends that is now the pastors wife in Wynberg, sister Crystal, was in the recovery home. She told me about the recovery home at Victory Outreach and I was then able to go in.God changed my life there and set me free from my addiction. God is currently using Nathan at Victory Outreach Johannesburg. He moved his family to Johannesburg to serve as a missionary. He has been there for eight years. He has a passion for the youth, and he enjoys encouraging and motivating them to be all God has called them to be. “I want to encourage someone to never give up. When all hope felt like it was gone for me, I went into the recovery home and was delivered from drugs. Never give up, never push the drug addict aside, never push the hurting aside.God has a plan for their lives. How Simon Wynberg and the ARC Ensemble Are Recovering Music Nearly Silenced by 20th-Century Tyranny

Classical Post

Play Episode Listen Later Oct 20, 2022 19:26

Many classical music ensembles have only recently begun to prioritize programming works by underrepresented composers who've been unjustly lost to the sands of time. But for 20 years and counting, that's been the sole focus and mission of the ARC Ensemble and its artistic director, Simon Wynberg. The ensemble-in-residence at Toronto's Royal Conservatory, the ARC Ensemble is among Canada's most distinguished cultural ambassadors. And since day one, its musicians and leadership have been dedicated to presenting the work of composers suppressed and marginalized under the 20th century's repressive regimes — an overwhelming mountain of music still waiting to be rediscovered. "The thing I've taken back from all the work we've done is how much music there is to explore," Wynberg says on the latest episode of the Classical Post podcast. "All of these chamber works are there, waiting for someone with a bit of imagination — and some financial backing, too — to put these things together. There's really just a huge amount of unknown music which deserves to be incorporated." The Grammy-nominated ARC Ensemble's latest album in its acclaimed Music in Exile series on Chandos Records shines a light on the chamber music of Alberto Hemsi, a composer and ethnomusicologist whose "whole identity was one of exile," Wynberg shares. A Sephardic Jew born in the Ottoman Empire and musically trained in Italy, Hemsi was forced into political exile multiple times throughout his lifetime. And according to Wynberg, that regular immersion in new cultures — albeit not by choice — forced Hemsi to reinvent himself as an artist, resulting in music of incredible depth and variety. "He operated entirely outside of the European tradition. As a Sephardic Jew, he was inspired by the traditional Jewish melodies he collected, and then he infused his works with that music. So you get this astonishing new sound in a way. It's extraordinary." In this episode, we talk more about the ARC Ensemble's unique mission and take a deeper dive into the lives of Hemsi as well as two composers recently profiled in the group's Music in Exile series: the Ukrainian nationalist Dmitri Klebanov, and Walter Kaufmann, who became a celebrated scholar of Indian classic music after fleeing to modern-day Mumbai from Nazi Germany. The R340-million project forms part of the roll-out of the MyCiTi service to Mitchells Plain, Khayelitsha, Claremont and Wynberg. It is estimated that 145 buses will be operating from each one of the depots, making it 290 buses in total. However, this number may increase over time, depending on future demand for the service, City of Cape Town Urban Mobility MMC Rob Quintas tells Engineering News Online. “The roll-out of the service to Mitchells Plain and Khayelitsha will be undertaken in phases, as infrastructure becomes available and the necessary operating contracts are put in place,” he notes. “The first buses, although not on dedicated red busways, are expected to operate by mid-2025, if all goes as planned and if there are no delays, as part of the earlier operational milestone dates servicing the Nyanga/Central Business District route and the Wynberg/Claremont to Khayelitsha/Mitchells Plain route.” The two new bus depots will be built on a 15 ha piece of land on the corner of Mew Way and Spine road, situated between Mitchells Plain and Khayelitsha. The first construction work will be visible by mid-August. “The city's expenditure on the roll-out of the MyCiTi service to the south east is the biggest financial investment in public transport by any metro city to date,” says City of Cape Town mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis. “With the expansion of the MyCiTi service, we will be bringing more MyCiTi routes to Mitchells Plain and Khayelitsha to connect commuters with Claremont and Wynberg. “This is a mammoth undertaking and we are doing it in phases,” says Hill-Lewis. “Residents from these areas will see new infrastructure being built in the coming 36 months, be it the widening of roads, MyCiTi stations and stops, and depots needed to operate the service. “I am proud to say that the new bus depots will be state-of-the-art facilities, designed to use our scarce and limited resources to maximum benefit,” notes Hill-Lewis. The depot buildings will be orientated and shaped in response to the sun's direction, while it will also utilise saw-tooth roofs to channel reflective light into the interior to minimise the need for artificial light. Motion sensors will be linked to all internal lighting to keep electricity use to a minimum. The orientation of the buildings will also limit the need for air conditioning, making the buildings more energy efficient. “As for water, we estimate that up to 80% of the water to be used at the bus washing facility will be recycled,” explains Hill-Lewis. “We will harvest rain water from the roofs, and install water-wise toilets with water flow control.” Sustainable urban drainage systems in the form of permeable paving have also been incorporated at the large bus staging areas to allow for the replenishment of the underground water table. Local Benefits Quintas notes that local residents and subcontractors from the surrounding communities are set to benefit from the 32-month-long depot construction projects, through temporary employment opportunities and contracts. “Temporary employment and training opportunities to the value of at least R22-million will be available to local jobseekers. “Also, the contract between the city and the construction company stipulates that local subcontractors should be contracted to supply goods and services to the value of R40.8-million. “Thus, our local communities will have the opportunity to earn an income while this construction project is ongoing, and hopefully this injection will give them a foothold in the market,” says Quintas. The bus depots are set to provide a secure site where buses can be held while not operating; office administration facilities for the bus operating companies; facilities for drivers to rest and eat between shifts; as well as the infrastructure required for maintenance, refuelling and washing.

I had the pleasure of meeting the Rev. Duncan McLea last week as he was our Preacher and Teacher last Sunday at St. George’s Episcopal Church in Nashville. Duncan is Rector and Team Leader of St. John’s Parish, Wynberg, which is composed of six churches in the southern suburbs of Cape Town, South Africa. as well as The Warehouse. Additionally, he heads up the St. John’s Leadership Academy which trains pioneering missionary church leaders. Duncan taught in the Rector’s Forum on our continuing series on The Power of God. Duncan shared with us 7 principles that keep drawing us back to God. Here’s the summary and I’ve attached the audio recording of the class for you. 1. God is always at work everywhere all the time whether or not we are not conscious of it.2. God pursues a continuing love relationship with you that is real and personal and it needs a response.3. God’s invitation while personal is corporate---we are called into community4. God invites us to become involved with him in his mission.5. God speaks by the Holy Spirit through the Bible, prayer, circumstances and the church to reveal his purposes and ways.6. God’s invitation to join him in mission will always lead to a crisis of belief and will involve a change in your life.7. We come to know and experience the power of Holy Spirit as we obey him and he accomplishes his work through us. Blessings, my friend,Agatha
