In the summer of 2022, Anna spoke with Laurie Bertram Roberts, co-founder of the Mississippi Reproductive Freedom Fund in the weeks after the decision in Dobbs v. Jackson, ending almost 50 years of the Constitutional right to abortion in the United States. Laurie has spent much of their adult life in Mississippi working around abortion access, and has been clear-eyed – and frustrated – about the policy failures that led to this moment. Almost a year later, Anna called Laurie back to hear how their work has continued to shift, what they're hearing from callers, and the policy changes they see on the horizon. This episode also features an excerpt from our WNYC Studios colleagues at More Perfect, about two legal scholars' attempt to rewrite abortion law in the wake of Dobbs. You can hear Anna's original conversation with Laurie here, and subscribe to More Perfect here.
The U.S. Department of Justice is appealing a ruling suspending the Food and Drug Administration's approval of mifepristone, a drug used in medication abortions. If the ruling holds, it would effectively ban the sale of the pills across the country. We hear from Laurie Bertram Roberts, executive director and co-founder of the Mississippi Reproductive Freedom Fund. And, we talk with the University of California Riverside's Jan Blacher, the co-author of a new study about high rates of expulsions from preschools for autistic kids. Then, in "Above Ground," Clint Smith writes about the everyday joy, anxiety and exhaustion of parenthood with young children. He joins us.
In this documentary episode, we take a deep dive into how communities are responding to the growing abortion access crisis in the United States, sharing the stories of those impacted and highlighting a number of radical grassroots, mutual aid, and solidaristic efforts aimed at helping people access abortion in the places where it's currently outlawed or restricted. Abortion access has always been limited here in the United States, but since Roe v. Wade was overturned in June of 2022 and the Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization decision held that the Constitution does not confer a right to abortion, things have gotten dramatically worse. In the face of trigger laws banning and criminalizing abortion in many states — as well as state-sanctioned harassment and targeted campaigns against people seeking abortions — the centuries-old movement for reproductive rights and justice has only grown and strengthened. This is a special re-release of this episode for International Women's Day. The episode was originally published as two separate parts but we have combined those two parts into one continuous episode. Jessica reads for Adrienne Maree Brown on the changing shape of her work and creative process. They go deep into interceptions, the Nodes, and her Virgo stellium. The October 25th Solar Eclipse in Scorpio has us all deep in our emotions, and it may just spark a bit of drama. Jupiter retrogrades back into Pisces for the next few months, while Pluto and Mercury form a challenging square. The opportunity for healing is as strong as the chance for destruction this week.
"Pluto Galore" wants to shore up her defenses against incoming 7 years of Pluto transits. Jessica guides her back to the present and the powerful preparation being offered by her current Neptune transit. The astrology of the week starts and ends with some supportive and dynamic transits. Mid-week is where the trouble lies, as the Sun and Venus square Pluto, and Mercury opposes Chiron. Plus, Jessica talks more about the Mars retroshade, and Uranus' transit through Taurus.

Despite being the Blackest state in the country, Mississippi has little Black political representation; and the state's policies have been hostile to its predominately Black capital city of Jackson. But in the face of the state's political neglect, Black people have never stopped fighting to make their communities stronger. During the Civil Rights Movement, Mississippi was ground zero for activism, with Jackson State at the center. Now, a new generation is drawing on that tradition to look out for their communities. One of those people is Jackson State Junior Maisie Brown. She's stepped up during the city's water crisis to fill the gaps left by the state. As part of Into America's “Power of the Black Vote” tour ahead of the midterms, host Trymaine Lee joins Maisie as she travels around Jackson, delivering clean drinking water to residents. And we visit Jackson State alum Laurie Bertram Roberts, founder of the Mississippi Reproductive Freedom Fund. Laurie has spent her life fighting for reproductive rights, but her job has gotten harder after the fall of Roe. Trymaine also speaks with JSU history professor Robert Luckett about the social and political forces at work in the state. For a transcript, please visit msnbc.com/intoamerica. This week's horoscope starts with a New Moon in Libra and features a lot of Jupiter activity. Will it be fun or just too much? Listen and learn!
Jessica often warns against reading a baby's chart, but this listener did it anyway — and what she saw induced panic! In this live reading, they unpack Baby's chart and Mom's chart, and they inevitably talk about Grandmother while they're at it. This week's astrology is ripe with trines that promote healing, but it starts and ends with some challenging oppositions.
A listener struggles to deal with change, grief, and accepting the ephemeral nature of life. She and Jessica have a transformational conversation about death, life, and how to manage wanting control and not always having it. The astrology of the week ahead is a bit of a mixed bag. Some supportive transits facilitate ease, but by the week's end, the Sun will oppose Neptune, sparking anxieties. Jessica breaks down the impact of that opposition in conflux with the chaos of the first week of Mercury Retrograde.
It's another episode of How the Sausage is Made! One listener has a sudden and intense attraction to women, and another finds out what happens halfway between two Saturn returns. From COVID anxiety to a healthy fear of Saturn transits, Jessica gets into it! She gets a surprise about her rising sign, and they go deep into loving oneself while loving someone else. This week's horoscope starts and ends with oppositions, but first Jessica offers a refresher on the big-picture themes at play in the sky and how they are impacting us both personally and socially.
It is still legal to sterilized a disabled person without their consent in over 30 states in the United States. And despite the Americans with Disabilities Act barring discrimination, barriers persist in healthcare spaces that make it inaccessible to many disabled people, including costs. Even when disabled people find their way around these, many find they must constantly advocate for their healthcare providers to see them as capable of making their own choices in reproduction, pregnancy and parenting. Bodily autonomy, self-determination, the right to have a child and the right to choose not to — these are the ideas at the core of both reproductive justice and disability justice. We speak with Laurie Bertram Roberts, co-founder and executive director of the Mississippi Reproductive Freedom Fund and Rebecca Cokley, Program Officer for U.S. Disability Rights at the Ford Foundation.

Jessica reads the sex life of listeners "Sugar" and "Happy Bunny" based on their composite chart (aka relationship chart). This week's horoscope includes a New Moon in Virgo on the 27th and some prickly transits to Uranus and Mars earlier in the week. But first we've got to get through the Mercury opposition to Neptune, which brings anxiety, exhaustion, and confusion. Enjoy another horoscope to help you through!
Hayden has struggled for years to get grounded, to stay present in stress, and return his energy back to his body, so he reached out to Jessica for help. This week's astrology starts off with a heavy Saturn transit and ends with an anxiety-provoking Neptune transit, but it also happily includes many trines (120° angles), giving us some much-needed support and ease.
In episode 66 (aired September 2019) Jessica answered a listener question about sex and love, and today she gives a follow-up reading to "Anonymous 66" about her ongoing dating patterns and how she can find what she's looking for in love. There's a lot going on in this week's horoscope! On the 11th there will be an unpredictable Full Moon in Aquarius, but before that, prepare for a tumultuous Venus opposition to Pluto and a frustrating Mars square to Saturn.
In the weeks leading up to and after the decision in Dobbs v. Jackson, which ended almost 50 years of the constitutional right to abortion in the United States, we asked you to tell us how you're feeling, and how you're thinking and talking about family planning and access to reproductive care. Some of you told us about your anger, your fears, and we also heard stories about difficult conversations with loved ones, or a sense of clarity about the options in front of you. And as the post-Roe landscape continues to shift state by state, we wanted to hear from someone in Mississippi, the state at the center of this landmark Supreme Court case. "There's no getting around that the impact is on everyone," said Laurie Bertram Roberts, co-founder and executive director of the Mississippi Reproductive Freedom Fund. I spoke with Laurie about the ways this moment was expected, how their work has changed post-Roe, and why they feel both rage—and a sense of hope—about what's to come.

The Saturn Return happens to everybody once every 29(ish) years, and it's always a huge deal. This week a listener joins Jessica on the podcast to get clarity on her first Saturn Return, in Aquarius. The astrology of this week is tumultuous! We've got squares, we've got oppositions, we've got a New Moon in Leo, and we've got the North Node, Mars, and Uranus all meeting in Taurus. Come for the mystery, stay for the common sense life advice.

This week's horoscope features some hard Pluto transits, but don't worry — there are plenty of supportive transits at the start and end of the week to help us all through.
Jessica talks to a listener about familial pressure to have a baby. Then the reading takes a turn when the listener's late father comes through to weigh in that topic and many others. What do a Full Moon in Capricorn, an overwhelming Venus square to Neptune, and a Mercury square to Chiron have in common? They're all in this week's horoscope!

This episode features a conversation with abortion rights activist Michelle Colon of SHERo (Sisters Helping Every Woman Rise and Organize), an organization dedicated to reproductive justice for black and brown women in Mississippi. While there's no sugarcoating the dire state of abortion rights in our country right now, this conversation will help you pick yourself up out of your puddle of tears and start to take action. Michelle and Nancy talk about how Mississippi, with its myriad abortion restrictions, is virtually already in a post-Roe universe and how it will only get harder; the fraught history of bodily autonomy for black and brown women; and why we need to support local abortion organizations that are able to help women with the daunting amount of resources they will need when Roe is gone for good. Some residents of Jackson, Mississippi, have been without water for 14 days. Laurie Bertram Roberts of the MIssissippi Reproductive Freedom Fund says, "What really needs to be done is major infrastructure investment on the federal and state level. It was not shocking to me that it took the state so long to even show up in Jackson."
This is the final episode in our series about the current state of reproductive rights in the United States. Benita and Debby discuss recent heartbeat bill updates and some interesting conversations that happened on their Facebook page. Recently, a series of so-called "fetal heartbeat" bills have been circulating in various state legislatures. These bills are a extreme form of abortion restriction legislation which makes abortions illegal as soon as the so-called "embryonic or fetal heartbeat" can be detected, which is typically six weeks into the pregnancy and before most folks are certain that they're pregnant. Charleston DSA unequivocally rejects any attempt to restrict abortion rights and bodily autonomy. In the first segment, we analyze the difference between the various bills in different states, and how they compare and contrast to South Carolina's own so-called "fetal heartbeat" bill. In the second segment, we provide a socialist analysis of abortion rights and bodily autonomy, and explain how these bills are yet another example of class warfare. We highlight how these bills have nothing to do with “protecting life”, but are just another tool used by the predatory capitalist class to enslave us. We wrap up the episode by giving some examples of mutual aid and direct action that our comrades can use to push back against this latest push to eradicate the most fundamental of our rights: the right to control our own bodies. This episode was recorded when the state legislature was still in session. Since then, South Carolina's so-called "fetal heartbeat" bill has passed the house and moved on to the Senate. We chat about what signs might mean that your roommate is fucking, losing your virginity in a foreign country, and who the messiest one in the apartment is! We also deep dive into Charlotte's research on the recent wave of abortion restrictions, decipher what they individually mean, and suggest ways in which you can donate your time and money to help. 50 people in six states were accused by the Justice Department last week of taking part in a major college admission scandal. They include Hollywood stars and business leaders, who paid bribes to elite college coaches. But that’s not the way Jared Kushner got in to Harvard—his father paid the university directly. Amy Wilentz comments on the legal, and the illegal, ways wealthy people get their unqualified children into elite schools. Also: In 2017, the Trump administration announced that, for the first time in history, states could impose a work requirement on the low-income people who rely on Medicaid for health nsurance. Arkansas was the first state to implement one, staring last June. A number of other states, including Arizona, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, New Hampshire, and Wisconsin, are chomping at the bit to follow suit. Bryce Covert reports on the impact of the work requirement in Arkansas. Plus: Mississippi has only one place you can get an abortion--it’s in Jackson, and the state also has a wonderful organization based there called the Mississippi Reproductive Freedom Fund. Rebecca Grant reports on the remarkable woman who founded and leads that organization.
