Coming up on the show this week - New Order, Laibach, Ultravox, The Chemical Brothers and Young Galaxy. Plus a tribute to Christine McVie of Fleetwood Mac.
Special guest Erin Nunoda joins us for a fun and freewheeling (and queer theory-festooned!) chat about a stylistically diverse set of sharp, daring and often pretty funny movies set in Brussels, Paris, and points in between. Films discussed this month: La Paresse Je tu il elle J'ai faim, j'ai froid Portrait d'une jeune fille de la fin des années 60 à Bruxelles Clips of "Suzanne" performed by: Françoise Hardy, Jorane, Peter Gabriel and Young Galaxy. If you like the show or what we do generally, consider throwing us a few bucks to help cover our costs: https://paypal.me/kateandsimonpod Our intro music is performed by Sundar Subramanian. How did the LA Galaxy earn their point against LAFC? And what does that mean for a team that is pressing toward the playoffs? Josh Guesman and Kevin Baxter walk you through the Galaxy's trip to take on LAFC and discuss who stood out and who didn't have a good game. Would you want to change the lineup to get a better A+ set of players? And can you do that without Javier "Chicharito" Hernandez being on the field? The guys will even talk TV production and some big numbers as far as ratings go. Is El Tráfico the biggest MLS tv property? And does that give the league license to do stupid things? Josh and Kevin will also discuss the Galaxy's upcoming schedule and why some teams won't be taking an international break. That includes the Colorado Rapids, and it's a game Galaxy fans should watch! Finally, the guys will discuss some Galaxy charts and graphs and get into a possible formation change for the club. Would you move into a three-man backline to shore up the defense? Would you move into a five-man backline when you go on the road? Should defense be first? We've got another fun show for you as the Galaxy survive their international break with six or seven players headed to their national teams. Thanks for joining us!

Braden Alexander loves talking about his feelings, and he's bringing an opportunity for other queer and trans men in Toronto to share theirs! He is guest curator for With/out Pretend's newest event, Tender Hearts, where 10 of these men can share their stories of their life experiences with vulnerability and courage in a welcoming, safe environment. On how it hurts to be a man in the world right now, and how it hurts to be a queer person in the world right now. Braden offers some insight on owning not having our shit together and treating our feelings as sacred territory. Braden also discusses how Grindr has changed dating in the queer male community, and how it can be explored beyond its hookup intentions into making other kinds of connections with other queer male-identifying folks, as well as how Grindr can help and hurt feelings along the way. He also shares a bit about his experience as a white man loving an Indigenous man and its complexities, particularly from a Canadian perspective. Nola Darling, the main character from the Netflix series, She's Gotta Have It, is a character Braden relates to in finding different gifts and lessons while loving different partners at the same time. Braden also cites the music of Young Galaxy and the comic series, The New Mutants, as pop culture touchstones paramount to his self-soothing... and a little a bit about how being a Beach Witch is a self-care ritual for him! OH MAN! A new game! A new year! And it's Star Wars! We start off with a quick review of Rogue One in which Matthew tries to fight everyone, then Matthew comes out as a Young Galaxy-er, and rejects the premise that KOTOR was set 3956 years before A New Hope; Nessa’s touching Fisher Stevens tribute; Nessa’s standards for a dream man include that he has a jacket; Jim debates the morality of buying a drunk a drink versus killing them; John refuses to discuss his mother’s vast extended universe library; Larry the Cable Bi voicing the hick janitor; Matt Stone as Calo Nord, the Space Mom who gives Rodians a time out; no one knows who Imoen is; many Beck jokes are told; Jim says some shameful things; finally, Matthew tries to spell out exactly who Malak and Revan are, because it's darn confusing. This week on Square Roots: We play from the start on the Endar Spire until you reach the village in the Undercity. Next week on Square Roots: We finish off Taris and blast off to Dantooine! This week on the show: indie-rock melodies delivered live by Saskatoon’s own Close Talker. The band has only been a going concern for three years, but they’ve already captured national attention. Close Talker formed when lead singer Will Quiring met guitarist Matthew Kopperud at a B.C. bible college. In the spring of 2013, Close Talker became finalists in a cross-Canada music competition on the merits of their single, “By the Lake" from their debut 2013 debut Timbers. The album was release was written and recorded in just two weeks. But it so well received, it put Close Talker on radar of notable Canadian indie label, Nevado Music. In the summer of 2014, the band entered Montreal’s Breakglass Studios to record the follow-up record. It was produced by Besnard Lakes co-founder Jace Lasek (Wolf Parade, Stars, Mark Berube,Young Galaxy.) Unlike the quick outing that was their last recording, the group describes the approach to their sophomore effort, Flux, as a more “intentional” one. The band spent more than a year and a half on getting the songs on this record just right. This week on TransCanada Music West, you’ll hear more than a few of those songs. We promised plenty of summer festival-themed content for June, and we're starting off on a high note with this week's show. Three Days Grace have a new album in the works, but will be spending part of the summer headlining major festivals like the Quebec City Summer Festival, Heavy MTL, and more. We'll chat about what fans might expect from their set lists, how the transition with new vocalist Matt Walst is treating them, and more. Then, in CM Academy, we'll be speaking with Haydn Watters - one of three organizers of Riverfest in Elora, ON. The musical lineup for this year is quite exciting, with the likes of Blue Rodeo, Serena Ryder, Arkells, Charles Bradley, Dan Mangan, Elliott Brood, and Young Galaxy all taking part. What's more impressive, though, is how much the event has grown in stature since even just last year. Haydn will fill us in on the behind-the-scenes efforts that go into organizing and logistically planning this kind of event. Sure to be insightful for anyone in live even production.
Some baseball, some hiking, some bugs. Then more bugs. Then more bugs. Today’s excellent musical selection was “New Summer” by Young Galaxy.
