Call it “brain fog,” call it “attention economy burnout,” call it the dregs of late capitalism: however you label it, Tamara Lindeman has been feeling it. With “Neon Signs,” our favorite song from her 2025 album as The Weather Station, Humanhood—out now on Fat Possum Records—she gives names and shapes to the sense of dread so many of us feel permeating our daily existence.  “I've gotten used to feeling like I'm crazy—or just lazy,” she sings in her signature flinty voice at the start of the song, articulating the ennui of being stuck in a cosmic rut. Unending conflict, climate anxiety, and the always-on buzz of the internet—all of it has rendered so many of us inert. But the pulsing piano, swirling flutes and strings, and insistent beat do powerful work here, adding forward motion to Lindeman's existential angst. A protest song of a stripe, “Neon Signs” feels like a spiritual update of The Who's “We Don't Get Fooled Again”—a cautionary tale wrapped up in defiance. Untangling the politics of want and need, of trust and fear, of lust and genuine connection, Lindeman wanders a glittering landscape in which every flashing light demands notice and every notification could single doom. Is cutting through all that noise possible? “Neon Signs” doesn't make it clear, but Lindeman tips her hand in favor of the possibility of human flourishing in spite of it all—if only we can get honest with ourselves: “I swear to god I saw real love once/But nothing needs you so badly as a lie, so lonely, drifting, unmoored from real life/if nobody believes it all it can do is die.” This week on Transmissions, she joins host Jason Woodbury to discuss Humanhood—the album, sure, but also the concept of what makes us human. We're so pleased to share this talk with you.

Tamara Lindeman makes music as The Weather Station and she is my guest on this episode of That's How I Remember It. Tamara just released a fantastic record called Humanhood, which comes follows 2021's breakthrough Ignorance and its 2022 companion How Is It That I Should Look at the Stars. We talked about the making of Humanhood, climate grief, trusting musicians, winds vs. synths, and making music so you can go on tour. I thought this was a really great conversation, and I'm excited to be able to share it here. Listen and subscribe!

The Canadian singer-songwriter Tamara Lindeman, a.k.a. The Weather Station, is known for making music that confronts climate change and the damage we've inflicted on our planet. Just a few days ago, Tamara released her new album, “Humanhood,” which chronicles a difficult mental health period in her life when she felt like she had lost her sense of self. She sits down with Tom Power to discuss the record and why she turns to music to make it through tough times.

You know how every now and then, an album comes along that just gets into your bones, and it's hard to describe just how grateful you are it exists? (If you don't know that feeling, I'm sorry, but keep searching for it). Tamara Lindeman working as The Weather Station has make two such records I feel that way about; 2019's “Ignorance” and 2025's “Humanhood”, released on January 17th. “Humanhood” is a brave, striking and beautiful piece of work that just keeps on giving back, the more you mine it. It's not designed for casual listening; the level of nuance involved, the little interludes between songs, and it's lyrical themes of self-identity in crisis, set against grander concerns about the environment and the post-truth era we find ourselves in, deserve your full attention. It's the sort of album where a different moment or detail might hit your each time you go back to it. It can't imagine it being topped this year. Our conversation takes in everything from depersonalisation disorder and OCD, to taking photos of the sky, unrealistic roles for teenagers and in movies, Canadian rock-band Our Lady Peace, and quietly making the greatest album of 2025. Let me know what you think on Instagram @sendingsignalspodcast

What's starting to interest me is stories of resilience for a post-carbon world. What are we going to need for our emotional well-being? It's going to be a different world, not long from now. If we do this, and we must do this, this transition has to happen and there's going to be a sense of loss and sacrifice and challenge, not just with what's happening externally from a climate point of view, but in how we're going to have to make changes to our lives and reorient our energies in terms of our advocacy. I feel like there's an opportunity for artists - I'm more connected to the film and television sector and the documentary community - but throughout the system, to be able to provide realistic and yet reassuring narratives about what the upside of all this might be.This bonus episode is dedicated to the memory of media producer, art and climate champion and cultural impact leader Tracey Friesen, who passed away on Monday, January 6, 2025 in Vancouver. I offer my deepest condolences to Tracey's family and her countless friends and colleagues. I'm still on break from producing new episodes of conscient. I'm mostly meditating these days but also taking courses such as Surviving the Future.I'm to think through how podcasts such as this one, can be most useful future forward. More on this later. For now, while I'm on break, I thought it would be interesting to publishing a series of ENCORE or replay episodes drawn from previous seasons of conscient.I actually got the idea my fellow podcaster Alice Irene Whittaker whose created a REPLAY series drawn from her Reseed podcast and it's a good listen. I recommend any episode but in particular Episode 8 - Reflecting Climate Grief Through Music with Tamara Lindeman.  And I'm going to start on a sad note, but also one celebrating the life of Tracey Friesen. You'll hear, once again, e85 tracey friesen – narratives of resilience for a post carbon world which I recorded in 2021.For those of you who don't know Tracey, let me provide context this way. I'll read you an excerpt from a newsletterissued by the Story Money Impact organization in Vancouver that Tracey founded in 2019 and which is now run by Sue Biely. This excerpt will give you an idea of their appreciation of Tracey: Tracey was a gifted community-builder and mentor – equal parts fearless, wise, and energetic – with an insatiable curiosity. Her forthrightness left no doubt about where she stood when it came to fighting for social and environmental justice. She was a visionary tactician who recognized a gap in Canada's documentary sector, so she rolled up her sleeves and researched and published her 2016 book about impact producing,Story, Money, Impact: Funding Media for Social Change. Tracey's book became the catalyst that set this organization into motion.Thank you Sue and the team at Story, Money, Impact for that. I first met Tracey on September 21, 2021 at a event called Processing the federal election during a climate emergencyorganized by the Climate Emergency Unit. Stacey was impressive. Shortly after we collaborated on the mission circle of SCALE, the Sectoral Climate Arts Leadership for the Emergency network. We later became friends and often went for long walks in Ottawa or Vancouver to strategize about art and climate action but also the challenges of day-to-day life: supporting elders, being a parent, figuring out what to do… Tracey was a compassionate listener and a very wise advisor.  I loved the way she understood and advocated for the power of storytelling, and I think her words will be important to us in the future. I hope we can continue her good work amplifying the voices of artists. Here's another excerpt:We do need the scientists, and we do need all of the work being done across all of the important social issues that are happening right now. And we really do need the storytellers and to validate that their story driven, narrative driven, emotionally driven pieces of work will help to touch people now to change their behavior or will help to soothe or reassure or be with them in the world post transition.Let's go back in time: 2021 with the COVID pandemic in full swing. Tracey and I are sitting, meditation style, in her living room in Vancouver. Heads up that in this episode you'll also hear excerpts from conscient podcast e26 klein – rallying through art and e54 garrett – empowering artists in between our conversation. Finally, for your convenience, I've also added a complete transcript of the episode on the episode web site including links to the events and organizations that Tracey mentions during our exchange.  *END NOTES FOR ALL EPISODESHey conscient listeners, Thanks for your presence. Season 5 of this podcast is now completed. I'll be back with season 6 on art and culture in times of crisis, collapse and renewal (to be confirmed) sometime in 2025.

Building better mental health is something we could all stand to work on. The good news? You're definitely not alone. This week we're unpacking mental health with podcasts that uplift, investigate and validate. We all know the grief that comes from losing someone you love, but have you ever experienced climate grief? It's the feeling of hopelessness as the climate crisis continues to worsen. But for one Canadian musician, out of those feelings of fear, sadness and angst came artistic inspiration. We'll hear the conversation with folk band The Weather Station in a clip from Reseed. Plus, treatment for mental health has experienced a lot of innovation in the last century. That evolution continues as the Toronto facility "Remedy" researches the use of MDMA to treat post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). We'll share why the early results have researchers and patients so excited. The themes in this episode may be triggering for some listeners. If you or someone you know is in crisis, help is available. In Canada, you can call the Suicide Prevention Service at 1-833-456-4566. In the US, you can call the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 1-800-273-8255. Or contact the Crisis Text Line by texting TALK to 741-741. Featuring: Terrible, Thanks for Asking: Grief comes with so much judgment. Everybody is sure that there's a right way to do it, and only for a certain length of time. If our grief doesn't neatly fit into a category, we worry that it's illegitimate. Erin knows this judgment very well. She's a widow … or is she? Reseed: Music can help us make sense of, and deeply feel, our climate grief. Tamara Lindeman's acclaimed album Ignorance about climate grief struck a chord with citizens and critics. Performing as The Weather Station, Lindeman's 2021 poetic, thoughtful, and highly danceable album was named album of the year by The New Yorker and Uncut. Tamara joins Alice Irene Whittaker, the host of Reseed, for a conversation that starts with climate grief before spanning to art, selfhood, rootlessness, connection, and the heartbreaking beauty of birds. WTF Marc Maron: Zazie Beetz and Marc were in three things together - Joker, the Netflix series Easy, and the new animated film The Bad Guys - but they're only now meeting each other for real. That makes for a good opportunity to interrogate their respective anxiety issues and compare their coping strategies. Zazie and Marc also talk about her German heritage, why she's not an LA person, and how she sees her work on Atlanta as being part of an overall reflection of Donald Glover's real life story. Depresh Mode: We're seeing the effects of prolonged work-from-home jobs and from employers who are doing little or nothing to address burnout. We're seeing a blurring of lines between job and life, an old work system we're never going back to, and people who just can't take it anymore. They're quitting their jobs, often with no new job to go to, because they are flat out done. Depresh Mode host John Moe speaks with Jennifer Moss, a burnout expert who fought burnout herself when writing her book, The Burnout Epidemic: The Rise of Chronic Stress and How We Can Fix It. Mental Health Comedy Podcast: Comedian Dave Holmes talks honestly about being diagnosed and learning to deal with ADHD. As a kid growing up in the 70's and 80's, he'd get messages from teachers about not living up to his potential. The overall solution was "don't be like that." And the road from that place to where he is now, has many steps. Now it's prioritizing self care, nutrition, exercise, sleep etc. And that there are days when it is difficult to focus, and on those days there are other creative ways to deal. And not every day is a great day. Sickboy: Dr. Anne Wagner is a clinical psychologist and treatment development researcher in Toronto, Canada. Our human souls also require art and stories, and our climate movement needs storytellers, artists, and musicians. Art, stories and music don't need to have the answers to the climate breakdown we are facing - there are other mediums for that, and we need to push for those answers and solutions - but art, stories, and music do have this role to play in helping us process, dream, imagine, feel, connect, release, and grieve. In a time of climate chaos, art can help us to dream of a different world while connecting with each other. Enter a giveaway for a vinyl copy of Ignorance on Instagram at @AliceIreneWhittaker. Why Not Both is an exploration of how our multiple passions shape our identity, hosted by musician and therapist Pam Shaffer and produced by writer and photographer Laura Studarus. For our fourth season, we partnered up with Under The Radar to explore the lives of musicians, writers, actors, and creatives. The dramatic irony of releasing a record written for live performance during a time when we were all stuck indoors was not lost on Tamara Lindeman, the writer and leader of The Weather Station. If anything, it gave her more opportunity to communicate directly with her listeners about the amply evident effects of climate change on our society through her newsletter, where she chatted with fans and friends alike about the best ways to stay present and address the cataclysmic shifts of our time. This year was a sneak preview of what's to come and as Tamara illuminates, it's imperative that we turn towards a collective creative mindset. Thanks again for listening! Amanda Petrusich describes herself as a “die-hard fan” of folk music, but not when it feels precious or sentimental. That's why she loves the Weather Station, whose songs, she thinks, “could take a punch to the face.” A solo project of the songwriter and performer Tamara Lindeman, the Weather Station's new album, “Ignorance,” focusses on the theme of climate grief: Lindeman was responding to a devastating report by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change about the consequences of elevated carbon levels for human societies. If that sounds heady, Lindeman tells Petrusich that it may be her heritage. “There's this thread in Canadian music of philosophical songwriting, and that's how I like my lyrics to be. I like them to be about ideas as well as stories. . . . Most people want songs that just tell a story; they don't want the complicated ideas. But I do.”   The Weather Station performs “Robber” and “Tried to Tell You,” with Evan Cartwright on percussion and Karen Ng on saxophone.    This segment originally aired February 5, 2021.

The Weather Station's 2015 record Loyalty features eleven songs with that most laudable quality of sounding like they are being sung directly to the listener, and recorded in a small quiet room. Which is all the more remarkable for the fact that the album was actually made in a large tumbledown French chateau outside of Paris. But the intimacy captured on the record is no accident. It's the sound of The Weather Station principal Tamara Lindeman and just two multi-instrumentalist accomplices, who make every guitar flourish and drum rattle sound purposeful and in-its-place. The huge, hushed emotional terrain of the record is as sweeping and rolling as Lindeman's Canadian homeland, with songs like "Way It Is, Way It Could Be" inviting the listener like an open road.  Setlist: "Shy Women", "Floodplain", "Way It Is, Way It Could Be"
