A fabulous interview with the award-winning musician Charles Spearin (Broken Social Scene, Do Make Say Think, etc). We journey through his storied career in music, and unpack his fascinating new release, "Music For 32 Phones Played Simultaneously". Enjoy the ride!
In this documentary episode, we take a deep dive into how communities are responding to the growing abortion access crisis in the United States, sharing the stories of those impacted and highlighting a number of radical grassroots, mutual aid, and solidaristic efforts aimed at helping people access abortion in the places where it's currently outlawed or restricted. Abortion access has always been limited here in the United States, but since Roe v. Wade was overturned in June of 2022 and the Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization decision held that the Constitution does not confer a right to abortion, things have gotten dramatically worse. In the face of trigger laws banning and criminalizing abortion in many states — as well as state-sanctioned harassment and targeted campaigns against people seeking abortions — the centuries-old movement for reproductive rights and justice has only grown and strengthened. This is a special re-release of this episode for International Women's Day. The episode was originally published as two separate parts but we have combined those two parts into one continuous episode. In the second of this 2-part series of The Response, we pick up where we left off in Episode 1 and continue our deep dive into how communities are responding to the growing abortion access crisis in the United States, sharing the stories of those impacted and highlighting a number of radical grassroots, mutual aid, and solidaristic efforts aimed at helping people access abortion in the places where it's currently outlawed or restricted. Abortion access has always been limited here in the United States, but since Roe v. Wade was overturned in June of this year and the Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization decision held that the Constitution does not confer a right to abortion — things have gotten dramatically worse — especially in parts of the southern United States, the Great Plains, and parts of the midwest. In the face of trigger laws banning and criminalizing abortion in many states — as well as state-sanctioned harassment and targeted campaigns against people seeking abortions — the centuries-old movement for reproductive rights and justice has only grown and strengthened. This movement takes many forms, and in the second part of this series we're going to explore mutual aid efforts focusing on medical abortion pills and emergency contraception. You can listen to Part 1 of this series here. Dave is MIA this week so we've drafted in our pal Vicki Henry and asked her to pick an album. Her choices is Stubborn Persistent Illusions by Canadian post-rock troupe Do Make Say Think. Hailing from Toronto and part of Constellation Records, it would be fair to consider Do Make Say Think's jazzy, dual drummer, almost joyful approach to post-rock the yin to Godspeed You! Black Emperor's doomy, melancholic yang. That's not to say there aren't moments of darkness in Do Make Say Think's music, just that their overall vibe is quite different to that of their labelmates. Members of the band have played in/contributed to/been part of Broken Social Scene over the years, so they come from reputable stock too. Over the course of their 25 year career they've grown to comprise of 11 members, including various woodwind and brass instruments. At their core though, sits Ohed Benchetrit, David Mitchell, James Payment, Justin Small and Charles Spearin, all of whom have appeared on most of their seven albums. This week's choice is the latest of their seven albums, and arrived in 2017 after an 8 year gap - the longest in their history. So Vicki and Chris take us through a tour of their back catalogue before asking the age old question - should this go in our discography of unsung classics?
We had the pleasure of interviewing Charles Spearin over Zoom video! Can you think of a more perfect lyric that captures the pandemic experience? Multi-instrumentalist and composer Charles Spearin, known for his work in Broken Social Scene, Do Make Say Think, and so much more music that has soundtracked the past two decades, insists he's not much of a lyricist. In fact, his new solo album, My City of Starlings, is a largely instrumental collection of beautifully textured songs that glide between avant-garde, art rock and electronic soundscapes. But it's no surprise that Spearin's virtuosity extends to every detail of his songwriting, from the burnished brass of “Vireos in Bellwoods” to the celestial “Three Voices (Braided Carefully)” to the words and ambient melodies of the title track, which captures both the haziness but also the glimmers of hope of the time we've just lived through. My City of Starlings isn't a “pandemic record,” exactly – while Spearin found himself with extra time once touring came to a standstill, some of the compositions that found their way onto the album had been taking shape since 2017, while others were born from a more recent song-a-day writing and recording club of fellow musicians from around the world.Like so many of us, Spearin came to see his city in a whole new light during the endless walks taken through its streets over the past year and a half, partly thanks to an increased interest in birding but also a whole new appreciation for the wonders of the natural world – an inspiration that comes through clearly in the album's expansive sonic palette. Some of those strolls with fellow musicians, not to mention Spearin's wide artistic social scene, led to the many collaborations on My City of Starlings, which features a long list of Toronto's best jazz, pop, rock and experimental-music performers (including BSS bandmates Brendan Canning and Kevin Drew). Describing the recording process as akin to painting a picture with many layers, Spearin recalls how each guest brought their own unique brushstrokes to the compositions. From the first track to be released from the album, the percussion-driven “Portrait of The Artist As A Thursday” (accompanied by a video from animator Jared Sales that runs as a 12-hour loop) to the catchy shuffle riff of “Rutting Season” through to the spoken-sung Arabic poetry on “When Tigers Used to Smoke,” My City of Starlings is as eclectic and accomplished as Spearin himself. When he's not busy with BSS or DMST, the multiple Juno Award winner has toured with Feist and the late Gord Downie and is also known for his production and soundtrack work. During the pandemic, he has been working on a musical about Canada's private sponsorship program for refugees with co-writers Robin Dann from the band Bernice (who appears on Starlings' track “Three Voices”), actor and playwright Mariel Marshall, and Esmaeel Abufaker, a Syrian musician who came to Canada as a refugee in 2016.In 2009, Spearin released The Happiness Project, a solo album which used snippets of his neighbours' musings on contentment set to music, which won a Juno for Best Contemporary Jazz Album.Unexpected and indelible – much like the way the birds his album is named for are known to mimic sounds from their surroundings in their own distinct calls, My City of Starlings reveals yet another facet of Charles Spearin's uniquely observant artistry. We want to hear from you!
Broken Social Scene's bandleader Kevin Drew joins me to talk about his spark of Inspiration, Do Make Say Think's fifth album You, You're A History In Rust. Kevin is friends with the band (a couple of DMST's members are also in BSS), but he talks about being able to separate his personal relationships with the musicians from the music he loves so much. Our conversation covers learning to live with grief, the beauty of film soundtracks, our mutual love for Cyndi Lauper's She's So Unusual and we also propose a collaboration between Do Make Say Think and Rihanna.Kevin's brilliant new instrumental album Influences (under the K.D.A.P moniker) is out now on Arts And Crafts.Links:Kevin DrewYou, You're A History In RustMary J Blige: My Life

Here we are in the heart of the holiday season, starting to work off all that late November food while trying to navigate the December gifting maze. So, of course, let's talk about some games. Do Make Say Think is an instrumental band whose members all call Toronto, Ontario home. A functioning outfit for more than 20 years, Do Make Say Think’s core configuration consists of Justin Small, Charles Spearin, Ohad Benchetrit, David Mitchell, and James Payment, and together they’ve toured the world and released some hugely influential records. Their latest album is called Stubborn Persistent Illusions, it’s out now via Constellation Records, and will bring the band to a city, likely near you, later this year. A couple of days after their triumphant album release show at the Danforth Music Hall on June 10, 2017, I went to Charlie’s house where I met with him, Justin, and Ohad for a conversation about cinematic music and film scoring awards, the influence of the musical suite, Pictures at an Exhibition by the Russian composer Modest Mussorgsky, generic signifiers like ‘post-rock,’ how drummer Jimmy Payment almost had his foot amputated in the weeks leading up to the aforementioned Danforth Music Hall show, how Charles must balance his duties in Broken Social Scene with those in Do Make Say Think, and much, much more. Sponsored by Pizza Trokadero, the Bookshelf, and Planet Bean Coffee.

Steven Page joins us to talk about his upcoming solo release, Heal Thyself Pt. 1: Instinct - a cathartic return to music for the well-known artist. The album was co-produced by Page himself along with Craig Northey, whose band The Odds performs on most of the tracks. We also speak with Jim Bryson, whose new album Somewhere We Will Find Our Place drops on Feb. 19th. The album features collaborations with Charles Spearin of Broken Social Scene and Do Make Say Think, and Jim tells us how it differs from his last offering, 2010's The Falcon Lake Incident.

#dewplayer {display:none;} It might be hot in the UK right now but this cool little harmonic drum and bass mix might just chill you out between the thunder storms. Please make sure you listen on appropriate equipment otherwise you miss out on much of the best bits. There is a curated selection from the present world of drum of bass in this mix. Look out for forthcoming material from fellow english Nottinghamian Joe Nebula; new releases featuring Simplification (Brazil), Command Strange (Kazakhstan) and even the return of legendary Hungarian producer, ICR. Another notable addition is a boiling hot liquid pearl from Dave Owen (UK/USA) called "Send Me Your Love" featuring a sick time-stretched vocal sample from the late Marvin Gaye (lyrics below). Finally, many thanks to all the featured artists and Dave Ashton for the inspired cover artwork. If you feel like supporting me too, one easy way is to share this with your friends. I always appreciate getting new listeners! If I could build my whole world around you, darlin' First I'd put heaven by your side. Pretty flowers would grow wherever you walked, honey And over your head would be the bluest sky. Then I'd take every drop of rain And wash all your troubles away. I'd have my whole world wrapped up in you darlin' And that would be alright. :') Artist Title Cloud NineMind Games (Joe Nebula and Peter Fine Remix) NaibuShadows of the Past Random Movement, Ben SoundscapeMany Things Command StrangeAway From The Sun Intelligent MannersThe Morning After Love DJ ClartDo Make Say Think MakotoGirl I'm Running Back 2 U feat. One of the great things about the new TIFF Bell Lightbox is that it’s not just a movie theatre. Well, it is a movie theatre. But it’s not only that. You know? TIFF could have opted to just run limited engagements and special presentations out of their new digs, but instead, the folks at the creative helm of the Lightbox seem determined to expand the menu of cinema-related goings-on in the city. In keeping with that mandate, September 2010 the Lightbox opens its hypermodern doors to venerable Toronto post-rockers Do Make Say Think, who will be performing a live, partially improvised soundtrack for Eric von Stroheim’s silent era classic Greed. With a curious and convoluted production history, von Stroheim’s film was kind of like the Dune of early Hollywood: an exorbitantly budgeted epic that was rumoured to once exist in a whopping ten hour cut. Detailing the corrupting influence of money (it never sleeps, you know) after a woman (ZaSu Pitts) wins the lottery, Greed remains one of the more hugely ambitious productions Hollywood has ever churned out. And according to Lightbox artistic director Noah Cowan, the film was a perfect match for Do Make Say Think’s experimental rock music. “There’s something about its social consciousness and artistic inventiveness that we thought connected well with this group of Toronto musicians,” says Cowan of the pairing. “It works really well with musicians who improvise. There’s something sort of ephemeral to what constitutes story in a lot of silent era films. I think it allows for a greater reflection by artistic collaborators.” Do Make Say Think are no strangers to coupling their music with a film screening. Indeed, it was their live score for the 1919 German horror film Tales of the Uncanny (performed at Yonge-Dundas Square as part of Luminato in 2009) that informed the Lightbox’s decision to organize this week’s Greed performance. “These guys have expressed a real enthusiasm for engaging in cross-media exploration,” says Cowan. “We want to support that in Toronto. Not just at TIFF Bell Lightbox, but as a larger part of the city’s cultural fabric. This seems like a great vehicle for these sorts of hybrid events.” As Cowan suggests, the interstitial place a performance like this occupies also broadens aesthetic boundaries. Especially for a film like Greed, which has existed piecemeal in different cuts of different lengths over the years, it’s tricky to get a bead on precisely what constitutes the film. “The beginnings of cinema are starting to feel like today’s cinema, where you have all these director’s cuts and innumerable versions of films,” says Cowan. “This was the norm back in the day, where theatres would chop off bits of films. Different versions would be circulated by the studio for different marketplaces. Directors would tear their hair out, but it meant that an audience would have a general sense of what a film was, as opposed to an idea of it tied to a specific running time.” So whereas playing over a classic Bernard Herrmann score to a film like Vertigo or Taxi Driver may seem like cinematic sacrilege, a sin on par with George Lucas and Steven Speilberg’s much-maligned fiddling with their classic films, Do Make Say Think’s live score for Greed functions to tie together a film whose production and screening history was far more amorphous. The accompanying concert provides not just a compliment to the event, but the event itself. It’s something that transgresses time (setting a classic silent film to contemporary instrumental rock music) as well as the boundaries of media. And it’s precisely the kind of thing we’re happy to have the Lightbox around to host. Do Make Say Think perform a live soundtrack to Eric von Stroheim’s Greed Sept 2010 at the TIFF Bell Lightbox (350 King Street West). Special Edition.
