Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: My Number 1 Epistemology Book Recommendation: Inventing Temperature, published by adamShimi on September 8, 2024 on LessWrong. In my last post, I wrote that no resource out there exactly captured my model of epistemology, which is why I wanted to share a half-baked version of it. But I do have one book which I always recommend to people who want to learn more about epistemology: Inventing Temperature by Hasok Chang. To be very clear, my recommendation is not just to get the good ideas from this book (of which there are many) from a book review or summary - it's to actually read the book, the old-school way, one word at a time. Why? Because this book teaches you the right feel, the right vibe for thinking about epistemology. It punctures the bubble of sterile non-sense that so easily pass for "how science works" in most people's education, such as the "scientific method". And it does so by demonstrating how one actually makes progress in epistemology: by thinking, yes, but also by paying close attention to what actually happened. It works first because the book is steeped in history, here the history of thermometry (the measurement of temperature). By default, beware anything that is only philosophy of science, without any basis in history - this is definitively ungrounded bullshit. Not only is Chang leveraging history, he also has an advantage over most of the literature in History and Philosophy of Science: early thermometry is truly not that complex technically or mathematically. Except for the last historical chapter, where details of the Carnot cycle get in the way, most of the book describes straightforward questions that anyone can understand, and both experiments and mathematics are at a modern high-school level. As such, I know that any educated person can read this book, and follow the history part. Last but not least, thermometry provides a great opportunity to show what happens at the beginning, before all the frames and techniques and epistemic infrastructure is set up. Another source of oversimplification in people's models of epistemology (including my own before I started digging into the history) is that we moderns mostly learn well-framed and cleaned up science: when we learn Classical Mechanics, we don't just learn it as Newton created it, but we benefit from progress in notations, mathematics, and even the whole structure of physics (with the emphasis on energy over forces). This, I surmise, has the unfortunate consequence of making even practicing scientists feel like science and epistemology is cleaner than it truly is. Sure, we get that data is messy, and that there are many pitfalls, but for many, the foundations have been established before, and so they work in a well-defined setting. But at the start of thermometry, as in the start of every epistemological enterprise, there was almost nothing to rely on. For example, if you want to synchronize different temperature measuring devices (not even thermometers yet, because no scale), a natural idea is to find fixed points: phenomena which always happen at the same temperature. But then… if you don't even have a thermometer, how can you know that fixed points are actually fixed? And even if you can do that, what if your tentative fixed points (like the boiling point of water) are not one very specific phenomenon, but a much complex one with multiple phases, over which the temperature does vary? These are the kind of questions you need to deal with when you start from nothing, and Chang explores the ingenuity of the early thermometricians in teasing imperfect answer out of nature, iterating on them, and then fixing the foundations under their feet. That is, they didn't think really hard and get everything right before starting, they started anyway, and through various strategies, schemes and tricks,...

"My Number 1 priority was not leasing my building. I didn't want my power in business to be held in someone else's hands. This was also the recommendation of the Louisiana Small Business Administration to me as I looked at securing my future: 'You need to own the building!' So I tell others: Own the building. When you do that, you stay to work a little bit longer. You pick up the slack where needed. For me....this investment is my whole retirement on the line." Our guest is Denise Champagne-McClure, owner of The Coffeeweed Cottage in Lafayette, which opened on May 18, 2023. While Denise never earned a college degree, her business acumen can be put up against any individual who has earned an MBA. She works hard, she's humble, she's an incredible business entrepreneur, and has an eye for creating a successful business model. Coffeeweed Cottage's name is derived from the term for chicory, the name of a coffee substitute from the roasted root of the chicory plant. Denise loves the taste of chicory coffee and wanted something unique and different associated with her shop. And trust us....the coffee is delicious! Denise's store is at 410 Poydras Street, at the corner of W. Simcoe and Poydras Street in North Lafayette, not far from University Avenue near the Four Corners. She purchased the 3000 square foot property in 2022, the site of the oldest mechanic shop in Lafayette owned by a multi-general family business whose roots trace back to Cecilia where Denise grew up. Before finalizing her site selection, she drove around all areas of Lafayette Parish and knew that this oldest neighborhood in Lafayette, in the original Vordenbauman Addition, in the area close to the Fightingville and LaPlace neighborhoods, was the exact right spot. With the help of the Louisiana Small Business Development Center and Lafayette Economic Development Authority, Denise was given guidance on how to open the business of her dreams. She brought a rich and varied business background that made her a good candidate for opening up this unique endeavor: she was trained in horticulture and had worked for Coburn's for 15 years in bath/kitchen fixture sales, having moved up the ranks from the bottom up. Note: Denise shared her gratitude to Coburn's for the experience they afforded her, as well as to the people at LEDA, especially Mark Mouton and Lauren Titus who helped her navigate the process of developing a three-year business plan and qualifying for a loan. Denise was inspired to reach her full potential when attending an Unleashed event by Dirk Beveridge. She realized that she could do anything she put her mind to when she heard his message about creating transformation through creating a culture of innovation and growth. For more information on Dirk please visit https://www.linkedin.com/in/dirkbeveridge/ As with any entrepreneur, Denise has had to put all of her savings on the line, as well as mortgage her house to make this endeavor a reality. When you think about shopping options in Lafayette, as well as any other town, this is why it is important to think about shopping locally. Local vendors not only offer unique products, they give back to their community through donations to charities and in-kind contributions, and also sacrifice personally to ensure that employees who live in Lafayette are paid. Coffeeweed Cottage offers a unique array of services. One of the most unique services is their Grow Bar, where you can schedule a 'plant bar' for events as diverse as a bachelorette party, a team building event for work, a family get together, or birthday celebration. A $50 deposit for your event will go toward the cost of the event, where you and your friends can pick a favorite plant, a cute pot, and learn how to care for it. If your plant doesn't make it, you have a 30-day guarantee to swap it out for another plant or have Denise and her team nurse it back it health!

Topic 1: Japan pushes for digitization https://apnews.com/article/technology-health-japan-covid-public-d47817295a647379f69da9bb16160d13 Japan has stepped up its push to catch up on digitization by telling a reluctant public they have to sign up for digital IDs or possibly lose access to their public health insurance. As the naming implies, the initiative is about assigning numbers to people, similar to Social Security numbers in the U.S. Many Japanese worry the information might be misused or that their personal information might be stolen. Some view the My Number effort as a violation of their right to privacy. --- Topic 2: Drone Swarms! No … really. https://www.technologyreview.com/2022/10/24/1062039/us-navy-swarms-of-thousands-of-small-drones/?truid=&utm_source=the_download&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=the_download.unpaid.engagement&utm_term=&utm_content=10-24-2022&mc_cid=1cc458b67f&mc_eid=61a7b17087 What has been thought of until now as a sci-fi plot or a Hollywood movie trick is now an actual budget line item for the US Navy. We have seen choreographed drones in large-scale performances at the Super Bowl and the Olympics … but (as far as we know) none of those drones were carrying warheads. That's no longer a safe assumption. And the US military isn't the only country making progress on this weaponization of small-form UAV technology. --- Topic 3: (NK) Australia flags increased penalties for data breaches following major cyberattacks https://www.reuters.com/technology/australia-flags-increased-penalties-data-breaches-following-major-cyberattacks-2022-10-22/ Australia will introduce laws to parliament to increase penalties for companies subject to major data breaches, Attorney-General Mark Dreyfus said, after high-profile cyberattacks hit millions of Australians in recent weeks. The proposed changes would lift maximum penalties for serious or repeated privacy breaches from the current A$2.22 million ($1.4 million) to the greater of A$50 million, three times the value of the benefit obtained through the misuse of information, or 30% of turnover in the relevant period, he said. "Significant privacy breaches in recent weeks have shown existing safeguards are inadequate. It's not enough for a penalty for a major data breach to be seen as the cost of doing business," Dreyfus said. --- Sponsor Memo: Cisco I bet you think working with Cisco is hard. The graduation season is upon us, so today I am congratulating the members of the Class of 2022 who overcame the expected difficulties of high school and college and then surmounted the totally unexpected challenges of a worldwide pandemic. COVID-19 forced you to do many things differently. You attended some classes virtually from time to time. You might have missed some extracurricular activities such as music programs, competitive sports, and clubs. For all that you missed, you also learned some lessons that you wouldn't have otherwise. You watched leaders at all levels of health care and government assess the medical information and decide how to combat COVID-19 and how to keep Americans safe. We witnessed robust debate about the intersection of science, medicine, public opinion, and emotion. I imagine that these are lessons many of you will take into your careers, whether you are in public service or the private sector. In Arkansas, we went virtual in our schools for a short time. We knew the best outcome for our students was to return them to in-classroom instruction as soon as possible. And we did. Our Department of Education worked with school districts all over the state to implement procedures and protocols to ensure in-classroom learning continued. Secretary of Education Johnny Key and educators in all corners of Arkansas sometimes worked seven days a week to support our teachers and students. As we come out of the pandemic, we are enjoying all of our traditions, including graduation. I join you in your success as I imagine the sights and sounds as you walk across the stage, receive your diploma to the tune “Pomp and Circumstance,” your caps flying in the air as you finish one era of your life and head into the next. Graduation time is a good time to pause and reflect on the challenges and what you have learned to overcome the next challenge. As you look to the next stage of your life, don't forget the people who helped you get to this point: your family, your friends, your teachers and professors, and your mentors. You can thank them in person, and you can thank them by passing on their good work in your life when it's your turn to mentor and lead. The world needs your insight, creativity, energy, perseverance, and compassion. Graduation is not the end of your education but a brief stop on your way to learning even more. Learning never ends, and as you already have experienced, life will be a hard taskmaster. But never give up, because your greatest victories will come out of your greatest trials. My Number 1 goal has been to make Arkansas an even greater place to live, work, and raise a family. Many of you in the class of '22 will go to far-away places to chase your dreams. I wish you Godspeed. But wherever that may lead, I hope your path eventually brings you back home to join us in making Arkansas the best place in the world.

Hey What's up and Welcome to What I love About! This is my attempt at game reviews with a slight twist! What I love About will not feature any scoring of any kind, it is safe to assume that if a game is being discussed here that it is one that I really enjoyed and recommend playing. Secondly I like to spent some time talking about the games developers and use a little bit of video game history to inject some context. IF you would like to skip the Intro and get straight into the discussion on Las Stop, Skip to @9:42 This was absolutely a passion project as It has taken more work than anything I have done before, I hope you enjoy! If you did enjoy a Like/Subscribe or Share would be incredibly helpful. My Number one goal is to have someone who worked on the game see this. Thank you! Remember to Have Fun!
This weeks episode hits a little different. Liv and Lia chat how Here's My Number started, everything they have learned, how it's grown and where we dream of it going/WHERE WE ARE GOING.

Before you tell me I know #49 is missing. This was a special episode, so I jumped #49 to get this out. With Toots Hibbert currently suffering from Covid 19, and his family requesting prayers this needed to be done today. I know not everyone is religious so praying may not be in the cards. Everyone is a fan of Toots though, so by playing my music and singing it out loud we can generate some positive mojo to help pull The King through this most difficult time. Like I said 54-46 might be his number but the Good Lord has not called it yet, so shout it out loud for Toots and let the music play ! The Cutting Edge Japan Business Show By Dale Carnegie Training Tokyo, Japan
I absolutely hated the prospect of public speaking. In fact, I was a whimp and ran away from every chance I had to speak in public. Careers are funny things, because at some stage you get to a point where you can't run away from speaking to groups anymore. Now you would think that logically, I would have worked that out a lot earlier and prepared myself for the eventuality of having to speak in pubic. No. I hid from it , escaped from it, did nothing smart about preparing myself for it. I wasted so many years of opportunity to develop an ability to speak in pubic. Looking back I realize I actually limited my career trajectory, because of my fear of speaking in front of audiences. All those strangers staring at me. What if I made a mistake, what if I bombed the talk, what if I forgot what I was going to say? Today I have given over 530 public speeches, I train classes of businesspeople on giving professional presentations, I represent my company as the official face of the business, I do this Cutting Edge Japan Business Show every week. I often reflect that I should have gotten the training and started much earlier on this path. How about you? Are you like I used to be, also in denial? Are you holding yourself back like I was? Time to rethink and reflect on my errors and misjudgments about the importance of develop a facility as a public speaker. Let's not be like me, instead I recommend you grab the skills and gain the confidence. Welcome back to this weekly edition every Tuesday of "THE Cutting Edge Japan Business Show" I am your host Dr. Greg Story, President of Dale Carnegie Training Japan and best selling author of Japan Sales Mastery. We are bringing the show to you from our High Performance Center in Akasaka in Minato-ku, the business center of Tokyo. Why the Cutting Edge? In this show, we are looking at the critical areas for success in business in Japan. We want to help advance everyone's thinking so that we be at the forefront, the Cutting Edge, of how to flourish here in this market. Before we get into this week's topic, here is what caught my attention lately. If you enjoyed George Orwell's famous novel 1984, then you will enjoy this latest idea from the Japanese government. The cunning plan is to obtain information on all the elderly people's financial assets, such as savings and securities, through the recently introduced My Number identification system. The idea is to identify who has money and then get them to pay more for their medical services. With Japan's population graying and social security costs growing, the finance ministry insists that elderly people with large savings should make higher contributions to social security services, even if their incomes are low. They estimate that forty percent of married couples over sixty-five have at least twenty million in financial assets compared to less than five percent among couples aged under forty. So all of those who have been diligent, disciplined, careful money managers, stacking away savings for their final years after retirement from work are now in the cross hairs of Government big data. Getting old gracefully is about to get much harder in Japan. In other news, the national health insurance program underwent a major reform at the start of fiscal 2018 that saw prefectures rather than municipalities begin managing the deficit ridden system to improve it financial base. The kokumin kenko hoken health system covers the self-employed, pensioners, non-regular workers and other people ineligible to join employment based health insurance programs. In fiscal 2016 it had a deficit of one hundred and forty seven billion yen. In fiscal 2018 the government doubled its support if the program to three hundred and forty billion yen. The use of further taxpayers money is expected to grow, as the number of aged members, who tend to go to hospitals more frequently, is only set to increase each year. This is episode number #50and we are talking about How To Deal With Stage Fright Soredewa ikimasho, so let's get going. Hands and legs quivering, knees knocking together, face turning red, pulse racing, mind whiting out – this is stage fright. The term is associated with the total melt down people experience when they get up on stage in front of an audience to speak. In Japan, there is even an association of stage fright victims who wish to suffer no more. Our exposure to the “stage”, broadly defined, is any occasion where we are required to get up and speak in front of others. This frequency increases as we get older. Our work responsibilities are rewarded with a salary increase but also the obligation to give reports or speeches. We are innocently beavering away at our jobs, are recognised for doing well and given promotions or more responsibility. This is when we are forced to move out of our area of defined expertise and out of our Comfort Zone. Tetsuya Miyaki is a typical example. He was a low level bureaucrat in a municipal government office. Promoted to become the head of a department, he suddenly found himself having to give public presentations, including to the municipal assembly. He immediately found that his ambitions had now out stripped his abilities. When he became the mayor of a city ward, the speech requirement exploded, and so did his stress. The opportunity to enjoy the fruits of hard earned prominence were removed, because this one piece of the work gamut was killing him. “I feel like I barely made it through my term”, he lamented. Is Your Eye Off The Ball? This is what happens to us. With no thought for the future, we plough along working hard, looking for the rewards but forgetting the escalation of expectations that go together with that. If we took our nose off the grindstone for a minute and looked ahead, we would realise that if we go further up in the echelon of organisations, our ability to speak in a professional manner will come with the territory. I was the same. I had no vision of what the future would require. When I was younger, a friend of mine asked me to be his best man at his wedding. I deferred and suggested an older mutual friend instead, citing my lack of experience with such a daunting responsibility. The real reason was my terror of having to speak at the wedding, instead of just sitting there cool, calm and collected, eating, drinking and enjoying myself like everyone else. Did I look ahead and realise this is what comes with future responsibilities and go and get some public speaking training? No. I just avoided the issue at every turn, running away from every request like a scared rabbit. Find out more when we come back from the break Welcome backEventually, I gave my first public speech. It was in Tokyo in late 1983, in Japanese to an audience of young students at the Sundai Yobiko cram school and it was horrible. I was supposed to talk for thirty minutes but I finished in about eight minutes. When you still have twenty two minutes remaining to fill in, with nothing prepared, that is a daunting task. My nerves had severely ramped up my speaking speed, which is why I finished so quickly. I read the whole thing, looked down at my notes, never once looked up at my victims, didn't smile, had no pauses, no gestures, no animation except high blood pressure giving me a big red face like a warning beacon. I was stubborn too. Did I go and get training after this near death experience? No. I just kept on going along doing it the hard way. I ultimately gave hundreds of speeches in the course of my work responsibilities. I improved as I got more experience through simple repetition of the act, but I was still just an amateur bumbling along. Then I Had A Revelation I took the High Impact Presentation Course with Dale Carnegie and it was such an eye opener. Two instructors, everything videoed, massive personal coaching – it was amazing. I just kicked myself for all of the opportunity costs I paid by not doing this when I was younger. I was an idiot. I could have spent decades polishing my speaking skills, growing my potential rather than hiding from the opportunity. I could have ramped up my personal brand big time, if I had been even half smart and gotten the training. Like Miyaki san, for long periods of my career I was in pure, self-inflicted denial. So don't be stupid like me – get the training. If you are going to get anywhere in your career, you will need this facility to not just speak competently in front of an audience, but to speak persuasively. It is not a matter of if, only a matter of when. Are you going to let stage fright get you? Are you going to knee-cap your career growth? Are you going to be petrified every time you have to get up to speak? Do something about it. As I discovered it is never to late to start. Episode 11 – Creating an Audience of Raving Fans with Brittany YoungWho is your target audience, and what do they want? Do you know how to get them to buy from you? In this episode I talk with Brittany Young, creator of Certified Celebrator who sold 400 tickets in only 8 minutes (and crashed her own website and the ticket website while doing it)! Tune in to hear how she did it. Brittany Young is a mom and a Certified Celebrator. Her business, Certified Celebrations, teaches busy Mom's how to be “intentional” about celebrating and building family memories, all on a realistic budget. Her mandate is simple, to be intentional about celebrating and creating a joyful home for families. Starting out Brittany quickly realized that building authentic relationships required targeted content. Once she targeted the working mom of elementary school kids, she was surprised to note that a new audience emerged, the Grandma's! She learned that by building an audience of raving fans she had to let go of the people she didn't want to serve and focus in on her target audience. Her advice for someone just starting on social media? Pick one platform, develop relationships there and master it before adding a new one. Rachel also talks about how her mindset changed. She speaks about how she needed to bring and share what she had so her followers would become clients later on. Be visible and don't be intimidated, be your authentic self and your target audience will only want more of you. Find your excitement, when you love and are passionate about what you do; you can get excited easily, so dig deep, share and enjoy. Our discussion ends on being authentic and real – how much is too much? If there's something your audience likes, then use that to keep them inspired and interested. Just be you, and let your personality shine through. The more you, you can be, the easier it will be for the right people will find their way to you. Episode 2 – My Number 1 Goal for 2019 Goals, goals, goals! This is something that tends to come up at the beginning of each year. I have a larger revenue goal for 2019, you should have one too. What is your revenue goal for 2019? There should always be a revenue goal, but it doesn't need to be the main goal. Liannekim.com is my new website, which is launching soon! My number 1 goal for 2019 is to be more ME than ever before! Sound strange? The thought behind this is that I've struggled with everyday life, with people judging me, imposter syndrome, self-doubt, haters, overwhelm, and I struggle with being authentic, and how to be ME. I want to be okay with not being liked, I want to be okay to just be myself. As someone who is my brand, I want to focus on the people that do like me, or that do get me. I want to concentrate on those who do appreciate what I bring to the table. Those are the people who are going to get my full attention in 2019. This is a journey, not a destination. I want to be sharing that side of my story, what's not working in my business, so that others can learn from my mistakes as well. Don't get sucked into the negativity in this world. Do not get hurt or bothered by those people who don't love you, this should be a goal for 2019.
Ep – 10 My Number 1 Closing Technique What’s up, everybody? Brandon Olson here. Got another episode of Rank Daddy TV. Today, we’re going to talk about a closing technique that I use pretty often. It’s probably my number one closing technique. It’s great because you can use it smoothly right after your pitch. You can use it after a rebuttal. It takes everything away from you, puts it all the customer, all on the prospect, so let’s get into it. So, here’s the question. How can marketers like us working only part-time and running our entire business from our laptop or smartphone, how are we able to guarantee insane results to our clients? Well, the mainstream internet marketing gurus say that guarantees are impossible. That’s the question, and this podcast will give you the answers. My name’s Brandon Olson, and welcome to Rank Daddy. All right, so my number one closing technique, like I said, so you can use this kind of right alongside your pitch. You can use it with your Screencast videos, your emails. You can use it even after a rebuttal. Somebody comes to you, you’ve gone through your presentation, “Well, I got to think about this,” and you just lay it out. “Look, this is not going to change my life whether you hire me or not, whether you try my services or not.” Whatever your product service is, you kind of have to gear this to you, but you’re basically letting the prospect know that it doesn’t matter if they buy or not. It doesn’t matter to you. It’s not going to change your life one bit either way. I’m going to continue to go and work my four hour work week, taking multiple vacations a year, eating steak and sushi.
Have you heard of random number generation? Well, listen in today as I tell you about the unique method that the company CloudFlare is using. The military finally sees my point of view on Fitness trackers. If you have been listening for a while you will know that I discussed this a year or two ago, but just recently the Military has begun to agree with me and has now recommended judicious use on bases. Would you trust Facebook with your financial information? Listen in as I explain what Mark Zuckerberg wants banks to do? What is the effect of social media on our kids? Listen in as I discuss some of the latest research on this subject. Are your suppliers serious about their security? Today, I will tell you about what can and did happen to a company and what it could mean to you. Fitness Trackers. Social Media and Mentality. Two Factor Authentication. Craig Peterson: [00:00:00] Hey, Good Morning, everybody. Everyone is listening around the world its really kind of cool to see some of these stats. We've got people in Ireland, of course, the U.K., in France, and Belgium, and Canada. Just really all over the world, Australia and Russia, it's very cool. So, welcome, of course. this is Craig Peterson. We've got a lot of stuff to talk about today. One of the things I think is so cool we're going to talk about is lava lamps, and you might be asking yourself what does that have to do with technology? Isn't that from like the 60s or 70s? This is very, very, cool what's happening with lava lamps. One of the world's top security companies says social media is giving children the mentality of 3-year-olds, and it isn't just kids that are having these problems. Facebook is trying to expand, and part of that expansion is trying to find out what your bank balance is. The Pentagon. This is so long overdue, they are finally restricting the use of fitness trackers and we'll tell you why these two-step or two-factor authentication schemes have some major major holes. If they're using your cell phone, we'll tell you why, and how you can get around that, and keep your bank and other information secure from places, not just Facebook. Computer viruses, yes they do cause major problems and they've just hit one of the big companies when it comes to tech. And that is Apple. We'll tell you how Apple is affected by this massive virus, and how to make sure no one is spying on your computer. [00:01:40] If that's of interest to you, or if any of these articles are, you can text me right now I'll send you a link to them. My Number 8 5 5 3 8 5 55 53. That's 8 5 5 3 8 5. Fifty-five fifty-three. Let me know what articles are of interest to you. We will send you a link to that. And this one, making sure people aren't spying on your computer actually has links directly to some of the software. So, here we go stick around. We're going to spend a little time on this lava lamp thing because I think this is absolutely phenomenal. There are a number of companies out there, of course, and their only purpose in life is to help you in business and government with security. And that's something I've been doing for almost 20 years. Of course, for my business clients is really making sure their networks and computers are safe secure and working, Right. You don't want to put in some massive security system and not be able to get your work done, Right. Putting everything in a vault - is that really going to fix your problem and turn off the power. No, no, it's not. So, we have to walk this line between security that is functional and useful and security that is just going to get in your way so much that people are going to resent it and not use it. Just like last week I was on the radio, and with Matt Gagnon and Ken Altshuler. [00:03:12] But, anyways with Matt and I explained some of the major problems that are happening right now with smart TVs. These smart TVs are using Android and I explained why it's a problem, what they're doing, how they're watching us, monitoring us how bad guys are using the information. And he shrugged his shoulders well whatever I don't care. I'm still going to use my android stuff. And, I just had to shake my head. Now I understand that some are, just so useful. And, in fact, for the first time ever I have an Amazon Echo in my house and I've never had one before. There have been major security problems but this tech has been out there now for a couple of years. They've gotten rid of some of the problems. Locally the machines figure out when you're calling their name their wakeup word that I am not going to use right now. But for Amazon or Apple et cetera. So, it isn't streaming up to the cloud like they did when they first came out. Now Apple didn't do that. But we're not going to get into any of those details right now. So, that's been a major security problem for me. And now that problem solved I have it in the house and I am finding it just to be amazing, really useful, really fun. And bottom line, I'm so glad I did it. You know I got this little Amazon Echo and it's unfortunate, that Apple's fallen behind Amazon is beating them like crazy, like a rented mule, right. [00:04:41] Amazon's beating Apple because the Apple stuff is more expensive, it's harder to tie in. Amazon, now from your Echo you can control basically anything in your home. There's devices that attach into it. It's just phenomenal what they've been able to do. They've made it extremely useful and the price point is fantastic. In fact a bit of a side note. A study came out that said basically Amazon can give these Amazon Echo devices out for free, and still make money, because the average person that has these things is spending over 400 dollars a year with them on Amazon. And you can use them also to order things, it just makes life so much simpler for you. So, you know problems, problems, problems, but it's all security related. We have to watch what's going out from our homes, from our offices, what's coming in, and how do you do that. Well, this one particular company called CloudFlare does it with lava lamps. Now you remember these things. There is a guy from Britain who came up with them and what was his name. Edward Walker, I think Edward Craven Walker that is it. So his lava lamp made it into the late nineties cultural comeback but he didn't see what happens now because inside the San Francisco offices of Cloudflare they have 100 lava lamps on shelves. So, there the right on top of each other shelves. It's really kind of cool. And of course the lava lamp. Think about what's in it there you've got I think it's oil and water and wax and it heats up and it swirls randomly and it's really kind of peaceful to look at. [00:06:24] I've always enjoyed lava lamps. Make a nice little present. I had one or two more recently that ended up breaking and I didn't have. Remember they used to have a light bulb underneath them and that's what was used to heat it up. Nowadays, they're not used in the light bulbs but if you think about the patterns in the lava lamps, they are continually changing they're continually morphing. And when the light comes in from the outside window and heats up or the temperature in the room rises or drops these are all factors that influence what that lava lamp is going to do. What the wax inside and that's what you're typically looking at is going to do. So, they figured at CloudFlare. How about we just put hundred of these things up and get them running. We'll put them in the lobby and then we will put cameras, shoot video of these lava lamps and use that as kind of a random number generator because random numbers are pretty darn hard to generate just in general. So, you can use things you can use background radiation and that's been used for a long time it is really, rather random. We can't predict any of that type of radiation, the background radiation. But they figured this is probably just as good maybe even better. So, they are watching these things. [00:07:48] Any change in the video, causes a change in the random number generation, and what used to maneuver or manipulate, it is called a salt and it uses all of that. So, if you're walking in their lobby you're part of that randomization if the sun's coming in as part of the randomization. [00:08:10] Now, they've taken a couple more things that aren't there in that lobby so, it can't really be hacked and can't be predicted. But it is really, really, cool because there's never twice the same scene. It's virtually impossible, statistically impossible with 100 of these things running so, really kind of cool and it's super-powered way to generate these cryptographic keys. I'm just, I'm tickled pink because it's just such a real cool way of doing it. OK. Next, here we're going to talk about kids and social media. Now, what we know about kids, right. We've we've been kids, were around kids some of us have kids, grandkids and kids like to play with things. When I was young we used to go outside, and we'd get kicked out of the house if we were in the house. We'd have to go outside and we'd play and we'd have just a gas. And in the summer living up in Canada up north up, in Canada, it would barely get dark at night. And so we'd be out playing. I remember kicking the can, I've shared this story before at about 10 o'clock at night 10:00 11:00 o'clock and we think it's just Twilight it's starting to get dark and probably should think about going home and my mom coming out and finding us and getting upset because we were out so late. [00:09:34] Well, I didn't have a watch. Did you expect for me, right? Well, kids love social media. They love playing video games and when we're talking about kids here we're not just talking about really young kids. I know a lot of 30-year-olds that play a lot of video games, and to me, that's such a waste of time. But anyways, that's me right. I'm a much older generation. Well, there's an interesting thing that came out this week in The Daily Telegraph over in the U.K. where Baroness Susan Greenfield. Now, she's the former director of the Royal Institute of Great Britain, said that social media and video games have left children unable to communicate with one another and unable to think for themselves. Children who have been raised around these devices, much worse than when we were raised, and we had some TV, right that we were plopped in front of. But, these kids are constantly looking for something to distract from and she's predicting that and "here's a quote "I predict that people are going to be like 3-year-olds, emotional risk-taking, poor social skills, weak self-identity, and short attention spans." Now, that's really something since. [00:10:52] Look at her background here. She's a senior research fellow at the University of Oxford. She has supported her claims by looking at a study that was conducted by psychologists a few years ago at Virginia and Harvard Universities. She found that students are she didn't But, these studies found that students who would prefer to give themselves an electric shock, they'd prefer to give themselves an electric shock than to be left alone to think without distraction for 10 minutes. That's just crazy. She went on to say and this is an interesting article. Daily Telegraph they require a subscription. But, the study says. According to Her, people need a constant stimulation from their environment. Every single moment that implies they are no longer able to be left to contemplate their own thoughts. And that's something I've had to do many times, right. Think about your thoughts. There's a digital detox expert also out there she's the author of Stop staring at screens and her name is Tanya Goodin and she's claiming that reducing the use of digital devices can offer significant benefits to children. I could not agree more with Baroness Greenfield she tells the independent. A study from UCLA found that children who had all digital devices removed from them for a week were better able to read nonverbal communication and others than a group of children who carried on using screens. [00:12:19] And so think about this when you thinking about your kids or grandkids or maybe even yourself. This is a real problem. What's the first thing you do in the morning, right? How many times have we heard this test? The first thing you do in the morning. The last thing you do at night if it has anything to do with touching your smart device there is a problem and we've got to deal with that problem. As humans, we've got to deal with each other. Now many people are saying while over time we're just going to have our brains hardwired directly into some of these machines, we're not going to have to communicate with other people, we're not going to really have to think for ourselves. I don't buy any of that. People buy things from people, and you have to understand people, you have to have relationships with people, you have to have a relationship in order to build a family, have a family, right. We've got to watch this and we've got to watch it with our kids. All right let's talk about Mark Zuckerberg and what he's up to here? what does this all about? He wants to know our bank balances. Wow. [00:13:28] Well, we know Mark Zuckerberg has been out there trying to make money. [00:13:31] You saw a couple of weeks ago a massive plunge in the market value of Facebook, their stock went down. What was it 20 percent or so? Really, really big. And Facebook has announced that they expect over the foreseeable future. Bottom line here that they are going to continue to lose eyeballs, so people are starting to leave Facebook. They're not paying as much attention to it. And I think that really when you get right down to it they've done it to themselves in so many ways and started complaining a couple of years ago when they made a massive change to their programs, where the programs were at that point, starting to not show you articles from people you follow even though you wanted to see what they had to say. And frankly, it's just gotten worse and worse. So, I would expect just like every other big company Facebook's finally going to fall out of favor here, at some point. So, they've also struggled with some concerns about data privacy. You certainly heard about that, and what happened when he had to testify in front of Congress. We also know what happened with the Obama campaign getting the information on pretty much every user in the world. But, certainly, the Obama campaign from Facebook got information on everyone in the United States that was likely voter. And, then how the Trump campaign got some information on tens of thousands. Nowhere, near what Obama's campaign had. But by that time people were sensitized to it, right. [00:15:06] Obama didn't get any criticism for it. But I think that even though he did a much much worse thing people just weren't paying attention, much worse than what Trump had done in the 2016 election campaign. So, now people are sensitized to it we don't want it to happen again. And, yet there are some other articles in the news this week, who won't be really touching on but they are talking about how Facebook is having major problems trying to identify, who it is that is putting out these fake news, and ads out on their Web site trying to influence campaigns. Now, used to be pretty easy you'd look at an ad and the wording would be bad, the grammar would be bad, There might even be spelling mistakes, and you say this is this is obviously fake. Now, they're going to regular U.S. based Web sites and just stealing the copy from those putting them into the ads. I don't think things are going to improve much in the 2018 or 2020 cycles, because the bad guys are just getting better at hiding, and you know where they are, and what they're doing. When we're looking at Facebook it has become entrenched. Many of us are paying a lot of attention to it. I am involved in a few different groups on Facebook and we're helping each other out with things and I help people with security problems and stuff. In fact, I had a closed group that really I know we had about almost 300 odd people in it. [00:16:33] And I just plain didn't use it. So, I shut the group down and maybe we'll bring it back to life at some point. But what we're talking about right now is Facebook, and where they want to go, because Facebook has warned analysts that active users could decline, the number of active users could decline and the amount of time they're using it for the foreseeable future. And they also came out with another announcement which was Facebook is planning on tying into your bank accounts. And even though they lost 20 percent in one day from the first problem, the second announcement drove shares up about four and a half percent. So, they approached apparently some large banks, Bank of America said forget about it. We don't want it. We don't want to have anything to do with this. Other banks are taking a kind of a wait and see type of an attitude which I think is a really good way to do it. Facebook is saying we want to integrate your bank accounts into messenger so that you can check your bank account balances. You can send money to receive money. They really want to be in that financial business. Now we talked about that before and how Facebook has been experimenting with blockchain technology, in an attempt to do a few things, solve a few problems, one of which is they want to be involved in every transaction. And one of the things they're asking the banks for is what are you buying. [00:18:06] So, if you have a credit card, a bank account, checking account whatever you're using to buy things they want to know everything you're buying so, that they can offer you ads for that category of stuff. Do you want Facebook to have that? We've already got privacy concerns with Facebook, right, Do you know about those. Those have been high in the news we know about hackers trying to get into all the systems out there. Do we really want another area of exposure? You know I I really don't know. OK, fitness trackers why you may not want to use one. And finally, why the Pentagon has finally come out and said, No. We talked about this a year maybe two years ago. You know we have people using the fitness trackers that they're really kind of cool. And they have GPS built into them. Some of them some of them use your cell phone to get the GPS so you can track your runs, right. That makes sense. Easy to do. It's kind of fun to do. You can compete with other people. So, hey I did that same run as you did. I did it faster. You can keep track of how much exercise that you've had how far you even walk to right there not necessarily only for running, but here's the problem. We have had cases, for instance, down in New York City down in Central Park where the bad guys, in this case, potential rapists and others, have been tracking the movement of cell phones and the movement of fitness trackers. [00:19:48] So, they know who was running by a tree, for instance, So, they'll have the little receiver up there listening for the Bluetooth signature or the Beacon or the Wi-Fi signature or the beacon. And, that's obviously a real problem. That's a problem I think everyone should be concerned about if you're using the fitness trackers. Well, there's another one the military has, that we talked about well over a year ago, and that is some of these fitness trackers are uploading all of your data all of your runs to a Web site up on the cloud. Now, that's kind of interesting, right. So, you can see a global heat map I pulled it up I shared it with you guys a year or more ago. It's published by the GPS tracking company called Strava. S T R A V A and they use the satellite information that they're getting from these fitness tracker companies, in order to track where you. So, heavily populated areas are going to be well lit. But, when we're talking about the war zones like Iraq or Syria they're showing scattered pockets of activity, which could denote military bases or government personnel using fitness trackers, as they're moving around because the locals there are not using them. So, it's a reasonable assumption. And, so I use that data you can go into the heat map yourself and have a look at it and I was able to see circles right on Oval's really running along airstrips at air bases, running around the perimeter of bases, on the inside walls or even outside the walls. [00:21:29] So, you could see where the military personnel were. Now, we have some secret bases and those secret bases were outlined, as well by this GPS information from these heat maps. So, the Pentagon has come out now with a policy, finally, that was obtained by The Associated Press and it stopped short of banning fitness trackers or these other electronic devices that can be linked to cell phone apps that can do the exact same thing. But, it didn't ban them but it did say these devices presented a significant risk to military personnel. So, those capabilities must be turned off in certain operational areas. So, under this new order, the military leaders in different areas have the ability to use their discretion to figure out whether or not troops under their command can and should to use GPS function on their devices. And, that's obviously going to be based on the security threat in those areas are on that base. Good. Good article. Interesting article a lot of different opinions out there. Well, we're not going to be able to get to the two-factor authentication stuff and how texting you a login code, just isn't enough. We're not going to be able to cover this computer virus that's crippled iPhone chip maker out there. The big guy the number, one contract manufacturer of chips in the world. [00:22:51] Yeah, they got a virus right. What would happen to you? I betcha this has hurt the Apple stock, right there. But, you know they got back online because they had the right stuff in place, even though they got infected in the first place. And, then I think maybe the most important article is something you're going to have to read. And this is how to make sure no one is spying on your computer. Great article. You'll find it on my Web site. Craig Peterson dot com or as I mentioned the very beginning if you have any questions at all. Go ahead and text me. You can call, as well, but texting will get through. Phone calls are going to probably end up in voicemail 8 5 5 3 8 5 55 53 I answer all of the questions. We go directly. This is my number 8 5 5 3 8 5 55 53. More than glad to help you out, but this article goes through some of the software that you probably should be using for yourself to protect yourself. And if you'd like me to put together a special little master class on that I'd be glad to do that. We've done them before free webinars. Let me know more than glad to do one for you guys who are listening, right now. But you have to let me know you'd like to see it and then I'm more than glad to spend a few hours in putting it together and online with you. [00:24:15] I think actually the last webinar, took me out a week to put together. But let me know 8 5 5 3 8 5 55 53. Have a great week and we will be back with you again next week. And, usually Monday Tuesdays and Wednesdays I release a podcast as well so keep an eye out for that. Craig Peterson dot com slash iTunes or just search for me in iTunes or SoundCloud or wherever you get your podcast. Take care. Bye-bye. --- Related articles: Is anyone spying on your computer? Turney and Dickey will talk about a life changing event (the loss of her husband and oldest daughter) that happened to Bernice nearly a decade ago. The importance of faith, vision and insight after death, sudden or expected, will be examined during the live talk show. Listeners who tune into the one-hour feature interview will learn the how to use writing and other art forms to work through emotional and mental crisis. They will also discover how friends, family and community can offer strong arms of support during critical life changes. People who tune into the show live can have their questions answered directly by Bernice Dickey or/and Denise Turney. “Bernice Dickey is a woman of great faith. She kept her focus on the love of God after her husband and oldest daughter transitioned post an automobile accident, an event that happened to Bernice absent warning. Bernice Dickey has told her story on Bishop T.D. Jake’s television show, “The Potter’s Touch.” Bernice is a minister and a practicing Christian,” Turney shares. The show was so popular that it aired for several years. “My Number #1 Is Still My #1 is her first published book that she wrote to encourage others who experience similar situations and deep feelings of loss and tragedy.”
