In this episode, Grace Mosuro is joined by Lucy Auchincloss, Partnerships Director at Lifetime Training. Lucy shares her story and the journey of becoming Lucy. Lucy was born male in former Rhodesia, now Zimbabwe. Growing up, while she enjoyed "male" activities such as rugby, playing with toy guns etc, she always knew that she should have been a girl, often wishing witches would take her away to cast a spell to make her a girl and make everyone forget she'd ever been a boy. Puberty exacerbated this and she headed off to London where she partied hard to blank out the pain (and because it was fun); concurrently leading a successful career in financial services and, later, motor racing. Lucy moved - still as a man - to Australia in 2008 where the 3rd person she met was her now wife of 13 years, Suzie. While in Australia, Lucy was able to transition to her true self, having gender realignment surgery on her 35th birthday with the unwavering support of her wife, family and friends. She moved back to the UK 9 years ago, shortly after the birth of her son (conceived with her wife's eggs but also her own frozen sperm!). She now works in the apprenticeship space leading teams who deliver life-changing vocational training. #transgender #equalitydiversityandinclusion #inclusion #diversity #equality #theorganisationalinclusionist #real life stories
In a global culture that has perpetuated sexual violence, and a recent shift to more people talking about it than ever before, how can we as leaders truly be in community with survivors of this kind of abuse? In our Season Finale, we sat down with Lydia Matioli, Program & Partnerships Director of Freely in Hope in Kenya and Zambia, to talk about her own story and how this shift in mindset is helping her be more expansive in her vision, in terms of advocacy. Born and raised in Kibera, East Africa's largest slum, Lydia has experienced the effects of sexual violence, lack of education, and poverty firsthand. Now, at Freely in Hope, she coordinates, designs, and implements programs that exemplify best practices on ending the cycle of sexual violence. She shares with our community how listening to survivors' stories and telling their stories in a dignified way, helps them to shift the blame from them to their perpetrators and begin the healing process. We learn specific pathways to take, so that we can all become active survivor advocates as well as how therapy, contemplative practices, and having an attitude of gratitude can keep leaders in this work grounded and nourished. Lydia also talks about teaching children the importance of preventing sexual abuse through bodily autonomy, speaking up, consent, and safe touch. After giving birth to her daughter, Lydia wanted to ensure her daughter grew up in a world that was safe. As a survivor of child sexual assault, Lydia was terrified that her daughter could be vulnerable to the same harm she experienced. As a child-protection advocate, Lydia wanted to educate children to be aware of what abuse looks like, and to empower parents to build trust and establish safety measures with their children. This vision birthed Pendo's Power, her first children's book! Through the launch of Pendo's Power, Lydia hopes that children around the world will discover the power of their voices and utilize it to call out sexual abuse and build a safer world for generations to come. We speak to consultant developmental paediatrician Dr Rajini Sarvananthan, and Thulasi Munisamy, Advocacy and Partnerships Director from Protect and Save the Children, about the risk of abuse and exploitation that children face, both online and offline, as well as how to have conversations with parents, teachers, caregivers and children themselves, to break the silence around sexual violence.Image credit: Shutterstock

How do you create a brand that could outlast you?On episode 27 of the B-side, I speak to Joe Carter, Co-Founder of The Ironclad Pan Company - the only cast iron cookware made in Aotearoa, New Zealand, with a Three Generation Guarantee. Before dedicating 100% of his efforts to Ironclad, Joe worked in a variety of roles at some of the worlds most creative publishers and ad agencies like Contagious and Colenso BBDO.He chats about his time at Colenso BBDO as Partnerships Director, when the agency won Creative Agency of the Decade, and an unfathomable number of awards for work like the mobile app Kupu, for New Zealand telecommunications firm Spark. Which helps people learn to speak Te Reo Māori, the official language of the indigenous people of New Zealand. And we jam on how to build meaningful brands and his mission to demonstrate that companies like his own can be both sustainable and profitable. We discuss the Ironclad Pan marketing and growth strategy, the focus he has on understanding his customers and adding value to their experience that goes far beyond the pan itself. And balancing the short and long term objectives of the company, which offers a 100-year guarantee on their pans. Joe is an incredibly focussed and considered marketer, dedicated to creating one of the most enduring, responsible brands on the planet. He's a super-smart, super nice guy, and I really enjoyed chatting to him, I know you will too.CheersYou can find Joe here: https://www.linkedin.com/in/joecarternz/And purchase an Ironclad Pan here: https://www.ironcladpan.com Our GDPR privacy policy was updated on August 8, 2022.
