April Worthington is a teacher, mother of five, minister, and author of The Debriefing Workbook: Hope and Healing after Spiritual Abuse. In this conversation, April shares her experience involving a retreat led by Lundy Bancroft, author of Why Does He Do That?, a book many of us have clung to in our darkest moments. April's story isn't just one of personal harm, it's a call to action.  As a survivor of both spiritual abuse and high-conflict divorce, April recounts how her initial fan-girl admiration of Bancroft shifted into something far more troubling after an encounter that left her reeling. She shares what unfolded during and after that retreat, the red flags she noticed, and the courage it took to speak out despite the risks. I'm holding space for April as she brings forward not only her own experience, but those of others who have come to her with eerily similar stories. Her insight challenges us to re-examine what it means to trust "experts," and the danger in handing over our vulnerability to uncredentialed individuals cloaked in guru status.  Here's what else we get into, in this episode: The red flags that emerged during and after the retreat (6:03) The emotional fallout of being targeted by someone seen as a “healing” authority (26:24) How April is building a support network for other survivors (28:35) Why separating the author from their work is no longer an option (36:22) Learn more about April Worthington: April Worthington is a teacher, mother of five, minister, and author of The Debriefing Workbook: Hope and Healing after Spiritual Abuse. The first installment in the "Low Pressure Book Club Series" is a review of 'Why Does He Do That?' by Lundy Bancroft. Packed with helpful lists of warning signs, debunked excuses, and key signs of abuse, this book was written to provide insight into the minds of men who don't respect their partners. Throughout, I work to explain unacceptable behaviors by comparing them to similar ones displayed by men on Bravo. The author relies on his 30+ years of counseling men to identify contributing factors and presents a path to change that relies solely on the angry man reaching a point where that anger no longer serves him.Unfortunately, this review begins by discussing recently shared allegations by several women that say Lundy weaponized that same extensive counseling experience to prey upon their vulnerabilities. As a result, a book that presents a thesis that abusers are made, not born, now serves as a helpful guide in more ways than its author intended. https://cryingoutforjustice.blog/2025/01/30/lundy-bancroft-is-a-predator/ All opinions are personal and not representative of any outside company, person, or agenda. In this episode, Lundy Bancroft, a renowned expert on narcissism, abusive relationships, and the family court system, reveals how abusive men manipulate both their partners and the legal system to maintain control. With over 30 years of experience working with abusers and training professionals, Lundy exposes the subtle and overt tactics used by high-conflict individuals to gain power in custody disputes and other legal battles. He shares eye-opening insights from his books, Why Does He Do That? and The Batterer as Parent, highlighting the systemic failures in family courts that often work in favor of abusers, despite clear evidence of harm. Lundy explains why survivors of abuse find themselves in difficult, uphill battles when trying to protect their children and the emotional toll this takes. Lundy also provides practical advice for mothers navigating high-conflict divorces and custody disputes, outlining critical steps to level the playing field and protect children from further harm. He dives deep into the biases within the legal process that enable dangerous individuals to gain access to their children, even when their behavior is abusive. Through this conversation, Lundy offers a powerful look into how the family court system operates, how survivors can reclaim their power, and the ways in which we can push back against a broken system. Chapter 1:Summary of Why Does He Do That? Inside the Minds of Angry and Controlling Men"Why Does He Do That? Inside the Minds of Angry and Controlling Men" by Lundy Bancroft provides an in-depth exploration of the motivations and psychology behind abusive and controlling behavior in men. The book is aimed primarily at women who are involved with or have been affected by such men and seeks to help them understand the dynamics of abusive relationships.Bancroft, a counselor with years of experience working with abusive men, categorizes these men into various types based on their behaviors and mindsets. He emphasizes that abusive behavior is often rooted in a desire for power and control, rather than merely being a response to stress or anger. The book highlights common traits and tactics used by these men, such as manipulation, intimidation, and the use of guilt. The author also addresses the misconceptions surrounding abuse, particularly the idea that it is provoked or that there can be effective change in the abuser without willingness on their part to seek help. He emphasizes the importance of recognizing warning signs and understanding the cycle of abuse. In addition to analyzing the mindset of abusive men, Bancroft offers guidance to victims on how to navigate their situations safely, set boundaries, and prioritize their well-being. He encourages readers to seek support and emphasizes that they are not alone.Ultimately, "Why Does He Do That?" aims to empower women by providing clarity about abusive dynamics and fostering a sense of hope and agency in their lives.Chapter 2:The Theme of Why Does He Do That? Inside the Minds of Angry and Controlling Men"Why Does He Do That? Inside the Minds of Angry and Controlling Men" by Lundy Bancroft is a seminal work that provides insight into the behavior of abusive men from the perspective of an experienced domestic violence counselor. Here are some key plot points, character development aspects, and thematic ideas in the book: Key Plot Points:1. Understanding Abuse: Bancroft lays the groundwork by explaining what constitutes abuse beyond physical violence, including emotional, psychological, and financial control.2. Profile of the Abuser: The author categorizes different types of abusive men based on their behavior patterns and motivations. He discusses the traits common to these individuals, such as entitlement and a need for power.3. The Cycle of Abuse: Bancroft details the cycle of abuse, including tension-building, the explosion (abusive incident), and the honeymoon phase, where abusers often show remorse and promise change.4. Common Excuses and Rationalizations: The book addresses the excuses abusers use to justify their actions, such as stress, substance abuse, or past trauma, while emphasizing that these do not excuse the behavior.5. In this episode we plunge into the web of lies men construct to shroud their patterns of abusive behavior with expert and author Lundy Bancroft. Exploring façades of helplessness as a guise for manipulation, the twisting of narratives that paint victims as aggressors, and the chilling ease with which abusive men deceive authorities and loved ones are all part of our unflinching look into domestic violence tactics as well as the lives of the women who endure it, often in silence and isolation. The conversation also addresses the systemic issues plaguing the fight against domestic abuse. We reveal the startling imbalance in how society responds to male and female victims of abuse, dissecting the gendered nuances of power dynamics that often tip the scales in favor of men. Bancroft offers insights into the damaging effects of sexual mistreatment within these dynamics, the disturbing incidence of post-separation violence, and the formidable hurdles women face in custody battles. This episode serves as a reminder that despite progress in women's rights, the struggle against ingrained misogyny and the societal structures that enable it is relentless.Ending on a note of empowerment, this episode calls upon the spirit of activism that birthed the battered women's movement and insists on its necessity today. We discuss the urgent need for activism that ignites change and challenges the status quo, alongside the critical support structures like Genesis Women's Shelter, which offers help and hope for victims of domestic violence. This episode is a rallying cry for every listener to take action, to raise their voice in protest and support, and ensure that the flames of progress continue to burn bright against the darkness of abuse and inequality.

What needs to happen for survivors of domestic violence and narcissistic abuse to get a fair shake in family court? The overwhelming majority of people you ask will say family court reform or maybe that we need to burn it down to the ground and start again. And while those of us in this space see the egregious nature of how survivors are treated in family court, at this point there does not seem to be a clear path on how to have sustainable change of this larger, patriarchal system. So, what needs to happen for us to create a sustainable and powerful social movement to see actual change? On this episode I talk again with Lundy Bancroft as a follow up for our discussion in episode 60.  We touch on the shift of domestic violence agencies and professionals moving away from a support group and community support style of help to a more one-on-one approach to helping individual survivors as they go through family court.  And while some of the one-on-one strategy is extremely helpful, the isolation of survivors is causing challenges to the overall healing of women and children.  We discuss how a community support model could be extremely beneficial to support women who are in a position to start doing advocacy work.We also discuss moving away from only focusing on education of court professionals and more to the accountability of these family court professionals in following laws that are already created and the importance of creating more protocols for these cases to follow. We also touch on the importance of safety measures to ensure that survivors can speak out as well as their allies.https://www.nationalsafeparents.org/https://centerforjudicialexcellence.org/https://www.mothersontherise.org/https://peaklivingnetwork.org/If you want to chat more about this topic I would love to continue our conversation over on Instagram! @risingbeyondpcIf you've been looking for a supportive community of women going through the topics we cover, head over to our website to learn more about the Rising Beyond Community. - https://www.risingbeyondpc.com/ And if you want to support the show you may do so here at, Buy Me A Coffee. Tonight, my special guest is Monique Faison Ross, who's here to discuss how she narrowly escaped her obsessed ex-husband, who attempted to murder her in broad daylight.   This domestic abuse survivor's memoir shares an “engaging, powerful, and ultimately shocking story" of a bad marriage that ended in attempted murder (Lundy Bancroft, author of The Joyous Recovery). Monique Faison, the daughter of San Diego Charger's football great Earl Faison, married her high school sweetheart soon after she discovered she was pregnant with his child. Her relationship with Chris had always been shaky, but his verbal abuse only increased—and then gave way to physical attacks. Eventually, Monique took their children and left. That was when the stalking and serious threats began. Nothing stopped him—not protection injunctions, police warnings, or even arrests. One fateful Monday morning, Chris kidnapped Monique in front of her children. After a nightmarish car ride that involved car crashes and rape, Chris beat her on the head with a shovel and abandoned her brutalized body in the woods, presuming she was dead. But playing quiet was what saved her life.     It's super easy to access our archives!   Here's how:   iPhone Users: Access Mysterious Radio from Apple Podcasts and become a subscriber there, or if you want access to even more exclusive content, join us on Patreon.   Android Users: Enjoy over 800 exclusive member-only posts to include ad-free episodes, case files, and more when you join us on Patreon.    Please copy and Paste our link in a text message to all your family members and friends! What does an expert with over 30 years of experience specializing in interventions for abusive men and their families think about our family court system?  I had the privilege to sit down with Lundy Bancroft to discuss the current state of our family court system and his thoughts on how it is continuing to harm mothers and their children.  We discuss the recent passing of Kayden's Law in Colorado and his thoughts on the impact of legislation.  His belief is that we should not be creating a movement solely to pass a law, but use the momentum from the passing of a law to create a movement. We take a look at how many advocacy groups passionate about supporting survivors of domestic violence and narcissistic abuse are working within silos, which is preventing the movement from generating the traction needed for significant change.Lundy shares the approach for writing his first novel with the hopes that it will have a greater reach to helping family and friends of survivors dealing with post-separation abuse and the family court system. And in case you don't know who Lundy Bancroft is:Lundy Bancroft has over thirty years' of experience specializing in interventions for abusive men and their families. He has authored seven books, including the world's best-seller on domestic violence, Why Does He Do That?, and the prizewinning professional book The Batterer as Parent. Lundy is the former Training Director of Emerge, the U.S.'s first counseling program for men who batter and was involved in over 2000 cases as a counselor and clinical supervisor. He has served extensively as a custody evaluator, child abuse investigator, and expert witness. His new book and first novel is In Custody: A Carrie Green Mystery, in which domestic violence meets the family law system.References:Order Lundy's book In CustodyCenter for Judicial ExcellenceConnie Valentine of the California Protective Parents AssociationCome join us, and others like you, for a mini retreat in Golden, Colorado on Thursday, October 5, 2023. I recorded this video in June and sat on it. It's one of many I recorded in response to my channel's Johnny Depp/Amber Heard trial and comments. I've been asked questions, and here finally responding to some of what came up while I was posting, including suggestions to have Lundy Bancroft back as a guest.    As I've been saying, I feel strongly that dwelling in the darkness doesn't serve us, and we will all be better off finding ways to reach for and stay in the light.    Focusing on what's possible, finding more purpose, and creating ways to improve life are all far more helpful than arguing over celebrity breakups and media spin.
