When the Sheik of Dubai's daughters tried to escape their father, world powers turned a blind eye. But investigative reporter Heidi Blake was determined to document their plight. Writing for the New Yorker last year, Heidi unraveled the disturbing story of Emirati princesses Latifa and Shamsa, and how Sheik Mohammed bin Rashid al Maktoum crushed their bid for freedom. This week on Whale Hunting, Bradley Hope speaks with Heidi about reporting this story — now available as a new podcast, The Runaway Princesses — and how it reveals cracks in both British justice and in Dubai's system of absolute monarchy. A high court judge has ruled that Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid al-Maktoum hacked the phone of his ex-wife Princess Haya using Pegasus spyware. In this episode we look at the implications of the affair. Earlier this year we brought you an investigation into the use of controversial spyware called Pegasus. As part of that series we revealed that the phone number of Princess Haya, the ex-wife of the ruler of Dubai, had appeared in a data leak of numbers selected as possible targets for surveillance by governments with access to Pegasus. This software gives the user the ability to access photos, videos, phone calls – everything on the target's mobile phone. Last week that story took a dramatic twist. The Guardian's defence and security editor Dan Sabbagh tells Rachel Humphreys that new documents released in a UK court reveal rulings by a senior judge that confirmed that Haya was successfully hacked along with members of her legal and security teams. The judge also ruled that on the balance of probabilities, the hack was ordered by Dubai's ruler, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid al-Maktoum. It's an act that has implications not just for Haya and her legal team, but for everyone in the UK. And the affair has posed questions too for the British government over its relationship with its close ally the United Arab Emirates.

David did record several all-new snack-size KITMs for us... although this one is more or less the other half of yesterday's Twix® on Pegasus, the spyware developed by the private Israel-based NSO Group to be sold and marketed only to good guys, never bad guys. It is easy to tell the “good guys” around the UAE, as that is usually defined via heredity. Just ask Jamal Khashoggi… or at least, his wife, and his fiancé, whose phones were hacked with Pegasus software just prior to and following Khashoggi's personal hacking in Istanbul. Then there was Princess Haya Bint al Hussein, and Princess Latifa bint Mohammed al-Maktoum of Dubai, both considered naughty girls by Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum. The fleeing Princesses were hunted down all over the world with the aid of Pegasus, and probably the helpful folks at the FBI.
Two princesses from the United Arab Emirates show up in our leaked records – and we look at whether powerful spyware is being used against UK citizens In 2018, Princess Latifa, a daughter of Dubai's ruler, made a bid for freedom. Together with a Finnish fitness instructor and a French former spy, she fled the United Arab Emirates. The Guardian's Dan Sabbagh tells Michael Safi that at the height of the escape drama, it can now be revealed, the mobile numbers for Latifa and some of her friends back home appeared on a database at the heart of the Pegasus project data investigation. Latifa was ultimately captured by Indian special forces and returned to Dubai. The UAE described it not as an escape attempt but as a kidnapping. The controversial incident was one of the final straws for Princess Haya, the sixth wife of Dubai's ruler, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid al-Maktoum. She left the UAE after the couple divorced and soon became enmeshed in a protracted and acrimonious legal battle in the UK courts for custody of their children. As the Guardian's David Pegg reports, the phone numbers of Haya, and eight of her close associates, appear in a dataset believed to indicate people of interest to a government client of NSO. NSO Group says it cannot see how its customers, which are all governments, use its military-grade spyware Pegasus, which is capable of secretly infecting a mobile phone and then extracting massive amounts of data from it. It says Pegasus is only supposed to be used to prevent terrorism and serious crime, and that its clients sign contracts agreeing to these terms when they purchase a licence. There were British numbers in the records, too. One of those was of the human rights lawyer Rodney Dixon QC, and we were able to check his phone. The results were not conclusive – there was no successful infection – but we did find suspicious activity. NSO says it wasn't technically possible for this phone to have been targeted. But if people in London are finding possible signs of Pegasus activity on their phones, is being in the UK any protection? It was a great honour to interview Sheikh Rashid who has been making up for lost time with several wins following his successful treatment for Leukaemia. We hear about his introduction to Showjumping, training with his sister, Sheikha Latifah bint Ahmed Al Maktoum and the journey to a UAE team silver at the 2010 Asian Games. Sheikh Rashid shares with us the beginnings of DXB Horses and some special moments along the way, and we gain an insight into the respect he has for his family name.
We had a telephone call from Southern Arabia where the stud manager for Sheik Hamdan al-Maktoum the famous horse owner, to see if Cracker was for sale. Unfortunately, they were not aware that Cracker was a gelding and not a Stallion! We had phone calls from all over and also one from the ITV in London who wanted Cracker to appear on a television programme with one of their celebrities. We explained that it would not be cheap to bring him to London and told them about travelling time restrictions in moving horses .They said they would pay reasonable costs so we began to plan the journey. Cracker is not easy to box...he hates horse boxes, well getting into them anyway, once he is in he is quiet enough. We decided to take May with him to keep him company and hopefully make him easier to box.

This podcast will present you all the aspects of one of the most famous hotels of Dubai and of the world, the only 7 stars hotel : Burj Al Arab Jumeirah. You will first listen to the interview of the General Manager, Ermanno Zanini, and then you will listen to Marco Garfagnigni, the executive chef of the hotel. You will understand everything about the hotel, its history, its design, its facilities, suites, restaurants... As the interview of Ermanno is in English, and the interview of Marco is in French, here are some extracts of the interview of Ermanno translated in French. » Copyright of the picture: Mohammed Saleem/Jumeirah
Nina Porter has all the key events happening in the world from the past 7 days.

Allah Unique, Le Seul Seigneur.

I am so excited about this week's guest and I know you will be too. When the book The Sheikh CEO was released, it was hugely anticipated and took Dubai and the UAE by storm. It's written based on the first hand experience of Dr Yasar Jarrar, who worked for the Executive Office of Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid al Maktoum for many years, as well as interviews with people who worked (and continue to work) very closely with the Sheikh CEO.The book is a carefully crafted tale of Sheikh Mohammed's enterprising approach to running Dubai and is an engaging narrative about his penchant for risk-taking, even when the chips are stacked against him.The book has been called a ‘must read' not just for UAE residents but for anyone who aspires to be a great leader and i can't speak highly enough about it. The book is about leadership. And it's also about having a great vision, and making it happen. It's about resilience, innovation, and creating future leaders. It is about public leadership and building effective governments in the emerging markets that can lead social and economic development. It is about leading in an uncertain world.Dr Yasar Jarrar paints a story of a man and his vision that has transformed Dubai into the global city it is today. We spoke about why storytelling is crucial to leadership, how to win hearts and minds and why we should have hope for future.I absolutely loved our conversation and I know you will too. On this episode of The Critical Hour, Dr. Wilmer Leon is joined by Caleb Maupin, a journalist and political analyst who focuses his coverage on US foreign policy. It's Friday, so that means it's panel time.Former US Vice President Joe Biden's big wins on Super Tuesday were a surprise to many, including his supporters. "Going into the contest, aides and others were looking to see if Biden could just keep the race competitive with Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT), with an eye toward a contested convention," The Hill reported Wednesday. Former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg; former South Bend, Indiana, Mayor Pete Buttigieg; businessman Tom Steyer; and Sens. Will Bloomberg's endorsement help Biden?Alabama man Nathaniel Woods, 42, who was convicted of fatally shooting three police officers in 2004, was executed Thursday night, "despite last-minute legal efforts and pleas for clemency from family members, high-profile activists, and even a victim's sister, who all say he shouldn't be put to death since he didn't pull the trigger," the Daily Beast reported Thursday. Not only did Woods not pull the trigger, the man who did admitted that Woods did not conspire with him to kill the cops. This Sunday, March 8, is International Women's Day. In that context, the Guardian reported Thursday that Sir Andrew McFarlane, president of the family division of the high court in England and Wales, found that the ruler of Dubai, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid al-Maktoum, "orchestrated the abductions of two of his children – one from the streets of Cambridge – and subjected his youngest wife [Princess Haya] to a campaign of 'intimidation.'" In this episode of The Quicky, we unravel the story of missing Dubai Princess, Latifa bint Mohammed al-Maktoum. In March 2018 Princess Latifa, the 33 year old daughter of Dubai's ruler Sheikh Mohammed, attempted to escape her oppressive life after years of torture, imprisonment, and lack of basic human rights. Unfortunately Latifah's escape didn't go to plan and she was recaptured on a yacht off the coast of India. She hasn't been seen publicly since. We speak with the CEO of Detained In Dubai, Radha Stirling, who helped Latifa with her escape attempt and is continuing to raise awareness about the case.
