Soul Soil: Where Agriculture and Spirit Intersect with Brooke Kornegay
“Our sense of ‘the individual', which really began with the rise of capitalism and the forceful severing of people from land and community, led to the concept that there are categories of being that do and do not have consciousness, that are and are not alive, that do and do not have their own right to existence…and when we actually drop into our senses and allow ourselves to experience the living world, we discover that so many of the things that were not supposed to be intelligent, or sentient, are speaking to us and with us. And that changes everything.” Seán Pádraig O'Donoghue is an herbalist, writer, and teacher, and an initiated Priest in two traditions. He lives in the mountains of western Maine. Seán's approach to healing weaves together the insights of traditional western herbalism, animism, and contemporary science. He regards physical, spiritual, and emotional healing as deeply intertwined. He is the author of The Forest Reminds Us Who We Are. In this episode… Early influences and experiences working with plant and animal consciousnesses How becoming more fully embodied opens awareness and the capacity to connect with nature The aromatic scents of plants are recognized as kinship signals within our bodies; when we can direct our attention to a specific plant, tension is released within our bodies so that we can connect more openly The near-constant barrage and sensory overload of modern living and its effect on our ability to deeply listen to subtle information in our natural surroundings Some simple practices that can help us open our awareness and refine our senses What's most permanent about us is our threefold nature…the “Talking” or “Human” self that interacts with abstractions and language (our persona and ego), our “Animal” self that experiences sensation and emotions, responding to rhythm and ritual and love, and our “God” self or “Infinite” self that knows our divinity and infinity Examining our own programming and conditioning and reclaiming our body's innate wisdom, through the senses, to convey information about the world around us Indigenous vs. colonizers, and the worldview of “we” vs. “I” “To die healed is to die while being in right relation with all things in your inner world and your outer worlds. That can happen only in the context where we recognize and experience the world as alive. We cannot come into this full expression of who we are without letting our consciousness to fully enter and fill our bodies.” “6,000 years of patriarchal civilization has created rigid patterns within humans where we are armoring ourselves against our own eros, our own nature, our own desire for life, as well as armoring ourselves against the feelings and experiences of those around us. When we are in that place of being cut off from ourselves and each other, we can more easily become the instruments of ideologies that try to tell us what's right and wrong, and who does and doesn't have a right to exist.” Resources The Forest Reminds Us Who We Are: Connecting to the Living Medicine of Wild Plants by Seán Pádraig O'Donoghue https://otherworldwell.com/ Victor H. Today we're discussing the regions of Normandy and Brittany - a land that has hosted Vikings, Celts, and Roman Invaders. While Normandy is certainly steeped in the emotional remains of WWII - it is also a beautiful reminder of the freedom we all enjoy today. Digging a bit deeper here you can find delicate lace, superbly fresh mussels, ancient megalithic ruins and medieval works of art. If there's one thing that rings true about the Bretons and the Normans - it's that they continue to honor their cultures and remain the backbone of France. Our guest today is Adrienne O'Donoghue. While originally from Maryland, Adrienne met her French husband in college while helping with the harvest in Bordeaux. In addition to living in Normandy for 25 years, being married to the Mayor of Chambois, and raising four children there - Adrienne was a 19th century antiques dealer for 10 years! She now partners with luxury travel advisors like me to craft amazing itineraries for our mutual clients. Adrienne and I discuss the history of this special region, impressionist art, crepes, and how to just get lost in the countryside. Carly O'Donoghue is the owner of Stepping Out Podiatry on the Sunshine Coast, Queensland. In this episode, Carly shares the pain, guilt, and decision-making process in wanting to be both a successful business owner and a good mother. Carly openly shares what it's like to go through a four to five year IVF program and try to run and podiatry business and treat patients, all the while being asked by well-meaning patients, "when are you going to have children"? We also discuss: The benefits of good communication skills Learning to talk to patients Just do your job; that's all you need to do "Manners don't cost you anything. Saying please, thank you and sorry, with a smile doesn't cost you anything. So whether you're poor or rich, it doesn't matter". Why women are strong yet have so much self-doubt Go through IVF and miscarriage The tough decision on going back to work Thinking about what others were going to say and being judged by others Balancing work and family MUM GUILT Deciding if you need to get a locum or hire someone full-time. It would be best if you thought about your end goal. Get Off the Dance Floor & Get On the Balcony When you're on the dance floor, you cannot see anything but other dancers; however, you can see exactly where everyone is positioned with each other if you get on the balcony and look down. Your business is the same. One day a week is not enough time to run your business if you have multiple employees. Day one is used for planning, and days two and three is for implementation. Leadership Leadership is a different skill set that must be learned, and there are no shortcuts or secrets; it just takes time. Final Tip Be self-aware. It's not fair to compare yourself to others that have been qualified much longer. Be realistic about where you are now and where you need to be in the future. Only compare yourself to the progression to where you were last year. Central Station - Stories from Outback Australian Cattle Stations
Katie works at Mandora Station which is situated on the 80 mile beach between Port Hedland and Broome in Western Australia. That’s right, Mandora is on the beach! Anyway, Katie has a very unusual story – I don’t want to give too much away – but let’s just say she didn’t set foot on a cattle station until the year of her 30th birthday, and now she’s one of the handiest people I know. But what I really wanted to pick Katie’s brains about in this episode is how she stays grounded and manages to appreciate where she is right now, instead of focussing on where she wants to be, or thinks she should be. It’s a conversation that comes up time and time again each time I sit down with a station manager – some people think they can only be in the camp for a few years and then if they aren’t on their way to becoming a manager, it’s time to go find another career. Well, in this episode, I hope we can show you that working on a station is a legitimate career, not just a gap year. This podcast series is sponsored by the legends at Pioneer Water Tanks. Designed for Australia’s harsh and demanding conditions, Pioneer Water Tanks are manufactured using strong and durable, fully recyclable 100% Australian Zincalume® or Colorbond® steel. Shane O'Donoghue is my next guest. Shane is an Olympian who has represented Ireland in field hockey at the Rio 2016 Olympic games. He has played nearly 200 games for Ireland and is Ireland's top goalscorer with over 100 goals. In this episode we talk about the agony of failing to qualify for the Olympic Games in Tokyo and dealing with the fact that COVID means this heartache will linger until the games are completed. Shane has lived in Belgium for years playing hockey professionally and it is here where he found how to transfers what he's learned in team sports to business. He is a qualified psychologist and has brought a business coaching franchise called Mentally Fit to Ireland. On top of that if you are a sports athlete, artist, musician, the dancer you can head over to his Instagram page @Shane.od and see one of his other initiatives, Train the Brain and pick up some tools and tips to help you reach your potential. If you're blind and need to record dependable audio when you're out and about, the Zoom F6 multi-track field recorder is worthy of your serious consideration. When you can't see the pretty level meters on these recorders, ensuring you're recording at the correct level can be a challenge. The 32-bit float recording feature of the Zoom F6 takes care of that, allowing you to eliminate clipping or hiss caused by bad levels. Equally as exciting is that with an optional accessory, the Zoom F6 works with an iOS app that is fairly accessible, offering a range of control and configuration options. In this episode, Gary ODonoghue takes us on a tour of the Zoom F6 and its features, shows us the iOS app, and gives us practical demonstrations of the benefits offered by 32-bit float recording.
