In the very heart of the Divine Comedy, Virgil explains the nature and source of our motivations, and how they can be misguided even if they feel good. This also lies at the center of the overall argument in the Comedy, that the path to Happiness comes through deeping self-insight, and through choosing the constructive actions to create a great life and future. We will also read from "Life of Moses" and symbolically interpret (from about 27:50) the part of Moses' journey after the crossing of the Red Sea, and to the climb of the Mountain of Divine Knowledge - and the deeper meaning of being shown the Tabernacle, or mini-temple, in the spiritual/abstract first, to then serve as the "pattern" for a material one to be built. In this episode we reflect on the whole amazing journey with podcasting this first year through the Greek Myth and Philosophy, the Biblical Stories, and the great Renewal and Rebirth of beauty and widsom in the Florentine Renaissance. And as in painting and arts with the Mannerism Period, there might be something to the thought that not much could be added to the foundations of philosophy and theology after they in some ways had been brought to full fruition with Dante and Thomas Aquinas. One possible theme for the third season, starting in January, is therefore to look at the first few centuries AD, and go on a little treasure hunt for inspiring thinking and poetic beauty in this period! Dante reaches the end of the Journey, and is granted the Final Vision. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app
In the next last canto in the Paradise, St. Bernard is going through the main figures and souls of the amphitheater of the Divine Rose, both from the Old and New Testament, as well as the concepts of predestination and how the whole movement of the Comedy was initiated by Mary, Lucy and Beatrice - to save the suffering and lost soul of Dante in a Dark Forest, which is the opening tercet of the first Canto in Inferno. This canto ends with a reminder that the time left is short, and Bernard and the Pilgrim turn their full attention to Mary, for a deep prayer of receiving the Grace, for the final Vision. Thanks for listening, and enjoy! --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app
In this episode there's another transition where Beatrice has finished the task of guiding the Pilgrim through the whole Paradise, and healing his soul, and then the mystic contemplative of St. Bernard of Clairvaux appears in the center of the Rose. Bernard will now complete the final task of the Journey - and we are looking towards to the brightest light on the top of the Rose, that of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Thanks for listening, and enjoy! --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app
In this episode we have reached the final destination in Dante's quest for knowledge and understanding of the Divine Essence! The Pilgrim is welcomed by being tightly enveloped in pure light and love, and gradually receives a deeper and deeper symbolic vision, as he absorbs more and more of the Divine Grace. He then sees the angels and blessed souls in their real home, the giant White Rose (Divine Love) which has a circumference larger than the whole sun. Beatrice now indicates that her part in the Journey is soon done, as she is back to where she started, at the beginning of Inferno - when she descended into Limbo to talk to Virgil. And her last words are a prophecy for Pope Boniface VIII! Enjoy! --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app
In this episode we learn more about the Angels from Beatrice - where they were made, when, and thoughts about their true nature! We also get a long stream of attacks on human nature, false preachers, and the corruption of the church, once again. The whole canto is in some ways a transitional canto, where the opening motif of the sun and the moon in perfect balance at the horizons, before one takes over the skies - creates the anticipation of the final destination of the Empyrean only a few tercets away. Thanks for listening, and enjoy! --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app
In this episode the Pilgrim looks deep into the eyes of Beatrice (symbolic of Divine Knowledge and Theology), and sees the reflection of a light which one also would see, if one looks deep into the source of the "motion" of the Primo Mobile. He then sees the Beatific Vision with the source of Light in the center, and nine circles of Angelical Beings representing in some ways spiritual forces from messengers, to sovereign territory powers, to divine powers, to concepts like streams of knowledge and pure Love. Dante is referring this to the writings of Dionysius the Aeropagite, later found to be "Pseudo-Dionysius" the Aeropagite, in the 5th or 6th century AD. The treaty "On the Celestial Hierarchy" is here: https://archive.org/details/worksofdionysius02pseu This chapter also re-presents the structure of the book and the Journey through Paradise, towards a fuller understanding of the Divine Essence! Thanks for listening, and enjoy! --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app
In this episode we have another big transition from the Fixed Stars and the last of the Blessed Souls, to the origin of time and the Sphere that sets everything into motion. There are no planets or constellations here - and it is directly contained in the Divine Mind of light and love. Beatrice, as symbol of theology and spiritual wisdom, talks about the faulty nature of the human species, but that guidence and divine light will come back on Earth one day, and set the "fleet" on the right sailing course, once again. Thanks for listening, and enjoy! --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app
In this episode we have two short clips from podcasts about Dante as a Great Mind of the Earlier Times, and the relevance of the Paradiso today - for developing the mind. We'll post more extra episodes there for more in-depth reflection and interaction with those who want to learn more about the Ancient World and the Renaissance, and engage with other supporters in the process! In this debrief we have some more overall thoughts about the journey into the spiritual Paradise, and the psychology of St. Peter as the mechanism, and the questions, that can open this whole world within the mind. Thanks for listening, and enjoy! --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app
In this episode Dante is questioned by St. John, about the third theological virtue of Love. Once he passes the test, he can once again see, and more clearly than ever before. He then sees a fourth light, that of Adam, the first soul that was ever made. Dante has four questions for Adam, which concerns his time in the Garden of Eden, the deeper reason for why they were put into the exile, and which language Adam first spoke. With this, Dante has reached the deepest of the human souls in Paradise, and is now in some sense at the top of the 8th sphere - with a greater capacity for vision (understanding) than ever before. Thanks for listening, and enjoy! --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app
In this episode we see the Pilgrim being questioned about the second of the three theological virtues, Hope. It is St. James the Apostle who is asking the questions - and after Dante passes the test, a third light appear, as strong as the Sun. This is St. John, symbolic of Love/Charity, who will perform the last part of the examination of Dante. Thanks for listening, and enjoy! ... In this episode Dante is being questioned by St. Peter about the first and foundational virtue of Faith - what it is, if Dante has it, and where he finds the proof. This is the first of three examinations on the theological virtues Faith, Hope and Love/Charity - by the Apostles in the Fixed Stars. This canto is full of very deep and profound philosophical and theological questions, but still with a firm footing in a secular understanding of the spiritual and Divine. Dante is also showing the essence of scholasticism in several tercets (themselves tree parts in one unit), combining Greek Philosophy and The Biblical Stories. In this 8th sphere the souls are described as comets, symbolizing the high levels of blessedness and insight/knowledge. Thanks for listening, and enjoy! .. In this Canto we see how Dante has risen up the ladder of the contemplatives, and a fuller brightness of the Divine is filling the Sphere, as he sees the souls of Mary, the Apostles and the Prophets as beautiful flowers in a garden. Main themes in the episode is the transcendent moment of Dante in his journey, when his mind swells and expands, and it does not know anymore, what it becomes. But he can once again look at Beatrice's smile - and absorb all the beauty and knowledge. In some ways this is one of the most bright cantos, in the whole book! In this episode Dante meets the three Contemplatives and Monks St. Benedict, St. Macarius and Romuald Onesti in the Sphere of Saturn. After this the Pilgrim suddenly ascends the ladder with Beatrice, fulfilling the transition into the highest levels, and enters the sphere of the Fixed Stars. In this episode we come to the serene peace of Saturn, with burning souls and intensity of spirit, love and energy. The main symbol in this sphere is the ladder - an image for transition and ascent to the highest of heavens, and also of the Monastery. The mood is changing a lot, and the Pilgrim too is becoming more thoughtful and infused with wonder and love. With this canto we are entering the final stages of the whole Journey through Paradise. In the episode we learn about six important historical figures, as examples of the Just Rulers! King David, Emperor Trajan, King Hezekiah, Emperor Constantine, King William II, and the Trojan Hero Ripheus. Dante is with this also uniting two Jewish Kings, two Christians, and two Pagans from the Jewish, Greek and Roman traditions into a unity of Good Rule. Canto twenty is the last one from the three "active lives" spheres of Knowledge, Warriors, and Rulers - which lead to the next sphere of Saturn, with the Contemplatives. In the episode the Eagle is flying in circles over Dante, and answering his questions about the nature of Justice, and some profound questions in Medieval Theology. We also get nine tercets (3-line units) about historical bad rulers, most of them from the contemporary times in the 12- and 13 hundreds. We are now in the third of the "Active Lives" spheres, before we reach the Contemplative Sphere as the top of the four higher spheres in Paradise. Major themes are the one and the many, in unity, and the growing influence of music in the higher spheres! After Dante's learning of his future in canto 17, his great-great Grandfather Cacciaguida points out some of the other big Warrior Souls in the big Greek Cross above them, and then blends into the Cross himself with more music. Dante then sees the silvery Jupiter around him, and slowly a giant Eagle takes shapes above them, as a symbol of Divine Justice and the Empire. This canto has some of the most beautiful visual poetry in the whole Paradise, when the souls and lights transform in the sparkling sight of a giant Eagle. And the feeling is more powerful than before on the journey - as Dante is getting closer to the highest Heavens. He is still learning, and sees his spiritual knowledge expanding through the intensity of the lights, and the beauty of Beatrice. Enjoy! :D --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app
In this canto Dante is finally asking the big question the is burning within him like a flame - about what his future holds. Cacciaguida can reveal that he will be thrown out of his beloved city, but the he will write a great work, that will be nutriment for centuries to come. Dante accepts this, and it's important to note that he is writing this during his last years in Ravenna (c. 1316-1321), after over 15 years in exile. The time in the story however, is set to 1300. Dante is also explaining why he is using so many famous and prominent people as examples in the book, and why he has to be honest and truthful, for the work to have a real and intended effect on the future. This is the central canto in Paradise, and we're now half way through the book already! In this episode we get a detailed history and general themes from the history of Florence in the 12th and 13th century. Dante is lamenting the fall of Florence from its glorious days and more simple times, but pointing to the cycle of things - in some ways being prophetic about the extraordinary cultural and artistic renewal in Florence in the 14 and 15 hundreds, and the heights of the Florentine Renaissance! This canto is in many ways a parallel to the 6th Canto with the Roman Emperor Justinian presenting the overall History of Rome, and the Imperial Eagle.. In this episode a Light approaches Dante and starts speaking in Latin. This turns out to be his great-great grandfather, Cacciaguida, the father of Alighiero (who is in Purgatory). He represents strength and endurance in this sphere, and tells us about the story of the Old Florence and his life as a warrior. Overall themes are the generosity of true love vs. the immoralities of the self-serving love, music as a divine language, and the centrality of lineage and heritage. In this episode we'll go briefly through the first five levels of Angelical Beings, talk about two key points from Dante's letter to his Patron Can Grande della Scala of Verona, and have a look at the entrance and first experiences in the Sphere of Mars! In the episode we are going through canto 9 in detail, where Dante is using the passionate atmosphere for his personal attacks on the Popes, the Vatican, and the contemporary rulers of Florence. We also meet Cunizza from a powerful Medieval family in North of Italy, and the poet Folquet of Marseillies who was devoted to a passionate and amorous life as younger, but then later became a religious figure and the Bishop of Toulouse. Overall themes are the perils of too much intensity and passion, but also the redemption and salvation, and how the souls are full of joy with being in the Paradise with the right amount of blessing adjusted to their own capacities. With this canto the book aslo ends the first main part where the "shadow of the earth" can still be seen, but already the lights are too strong to be recognized as people. All Dante can see is the light, and hear their joyful voices. Enjoy! --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app
In this episode we'll meet a personal acquaintance of Dante, the son of King Charles II of Naples, King Charles Martel of Anjou. They are very likely to have met in person in real life in Florence during Martel's 20 days visit in 1294. Charles was 23 years at the time, already the King of Hungary, and heir to Naples, Sicily, Puglia and Provence. We also learn about why lineage can sometimes produce "sour fruit" out of "sweet seeds", and Dante points to how each person is different by nature (with references to Aristotle), and how twisting things against this natural disposition could create bad results. The Canto starts directly in the sphere of Venus, the last of the three "lower spheres", and the souls are shining more brightly than ever, and seen as sparks within a fire!
