We here at RAM have always been vinyl conisseurs. But more and more people are discovering the joys of vinyl. It's really heartwarming when we see the youth of today (that was totally intentional lol) digging thru the racks. That means there's a lot of fertile minds that we feel, as veterans, should be doing our part to enlighten. Vinyl records have basic terminologies every collector should know. For instance: "LP", "hype sticker" and "deadwax". So we gathered a laundry list of said terms. Educational for the young'uns. Entertaining for the vets.   In our "News, Views and Tunes", we share our Halloweens and discuss A.I. "music". Finally, we crank some cool tunes from Sacred Reich, Overdrive (Swe.), Witchkiller, Meanstreak, Haunt, Spitboy and Phaethon.   Horns up!!

A revised version of an earlier episode, now with historical commentary following the story! Phaethon, a young demigod and son of Helios, the Greek god of the Sun, meets his divine father at the ends of the earth. Recklessly eager to prove himself, he takes a terrifying ride across the heavens in his father's chariot. As the earth faces total destruction by an out-of-control sun, Phaethon's fate offers a timeless lesson in knowing your limits. A story from Greek mythology, based on Ovid's Metamorphoses (Books 1-2), featuring: Phaethon, the Sun, Clymene, Epaphus, Gaia, Zeus - - - CREDITS Music by Kevin MacLeod Thumbnail Image: The Fall of Phaethon (Peter Paul Rubens, c. 1608)

A young boy seeks to make his mother proud by picking the pocket of a man whose fortunes no one has ever managed to steal, not even the master thieves. Genre: Fantasy   Excerpt: In the town of Pennyhaven, there was honor among thieves. For thieving was allowed, but only if done according to the strictest of rules, which were set by the Union of Thieves. The Union had a truce with the local constabulary to deal with any thief in town who did not abide by those rules. Their highest and foremost rule, for example, was that no living creature could be harmed by thieving. Their next highest rule was that only non-living objects may be stolen. And so on. Any aspiring thieves who broke the rules of the Union would never see membership, and would indeed be dealt with by the Union before the constabulary ever need step in.   What's the Word (that inspired the story)?I'm not sure. My notes are unclear. But it might be the name of the main character, “Eridanus.” It is the name of a constellation and a river god, and the river itself. The name is of Greek origin and means “early burnt.” This is for its connection to the mythical story of Phaethon, the son of the sun god, Helios. Phaethon stole his father's chariot—the sun—and recklessly rode it, causing mayhem until Zeus threw a thunderbolt at him, striking him down. Phaethon fell to his death, into the river Eridanus. It's an episode where we have full permission to explore through the lens of myth and fairytale - as these are the ways that Leo prefers to experience reality. The stories of Phaethon, Icarus, Narcissus and Cinderella are all a part of this one, each story giving us a different perspective on Leo and what it is to be children of the Sun.Music for this episode: Takuya Kuroda, Everybody Loves the SunshineCover Art: PETER PAUL RUBENS, HERCULES STRANGLING THE NEMEAN LION, C. 1620Martha, Melanie and Chris discussing Venus and Innana.Podcast Musician: Marlia CoeurPlease consider becoming a Patron to support the show!Go to OnTheSoulsTerms.com for more.

Mercury is best seen at the start of the month rising higher and higher in the evening sky and passing above the sinking Venus, which will reappear in the east in the morning twilight at the end of the month as the ‘Morning Star'. Mars is getting further away from us and dimming Saturn is at its closest to earth (in opposition) on 27 August and will be excellent viewing in the northern/north east evening skies all of August and well into next month. Saturn is close to the moon on the 3rd and the 30th. Sagittarius and the centre of our Milky Way galaxy (look for the upside down Teapot) are directly overhead and M22 is a brilliant globular cluster galaxy of millions of stars often seen as a faint cotton ball in binocs and smaller telescopes. Also nearby are the lovely Triffid Nebula and the Lagoon Nebula. Highly recommended: Get out your telescope See when you local astronomical society or club is having an ‘open day' or public viewing night, because seeing Saturn through a telescope is truly amazing! Morning Skies. Jupiter (and its moons) is easily seen in the north as the brightest object in morning skies and looks great even in binoculars. Ian's Tangent Ian tells a tale about Solar System objects with tails, how they are formed and how they can be detected. Well comets of course … but that's not all! Mercury has a sodium tail. The moon also has a very faint tail which has been detected. The asteroid Phaethon has a sodium tail, raising all sorts of questions for further research. Thanks Ian …. that's a great tale!

Once upon a time... The Tragic Story of Phaethon (Storytime and discussion of moral implications associated with his hubris)

Latin in Layman’s - A Rhetoric Revolution

In ancient Greek mythology, Phaethon was the son of the sun god Helios. One day, he begged his father to let him drive the chariot of the sun across the sky. Despite Helios' warnings, Phaethon insisted, and Helios reluctantly gave in. However, Phaethon was unable to control the fiery horses, and the sun chariot veered dangerously close to the earth, causing chaos and destruction. To prevent further disaster, Zeus struck Phaethon with a lightning bolt, sending him crashing to his death. The myth of Phaethon and the sun chariot serves as a cautionary tale about the dangers of hubris and the importance of respecting authority. Phaethon's reckless desire for power and glory ultimately led to his downfall, and his death serves as a warning to those who would seek to defy the natural order of things. In the modern world, this myth is particularly relevant in the context of environmentalism. Just as Phaethon's actions threatened the stability of the universe, humanity's reckless exploitation of the earth's resources threatens the delicate balance of our ecosystem. The myth of Phaethon reminds us of the importance of humility and respect for the natural world, and the consequences of our actions if we fail to heed these lessons. In conclusion, the myth of Phaethon and the sun chariot is a timeless tale that continues to resonate with audiences today. Its moral implications serve as a warning against the dangers of pride and arrogance, and its associations with the modern world remind us of the importance of environmental responsibility. As we continue to face new challenges and struggles, the myth of Phaethon provides us with a powerful reminder of the potential consequences of our actions and the importance of humility and respect. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/liam-connerly/support

A news roundup of the last couple of months with Chris North and Edward Gomez. With a few failures - the SpaceX Starship launch, iSpace's moon landing and Virgin Galactic's bankruptcy, it might seem things are going wrong. But it's not all bad news - ESA's JUICE spacecraft has successfully launched on its way to Jupiter! Elsewhere in the Solar System, archives of data from the Magellan mission to Venus have revealed further evidence of a volcanic activity on the hard-to-reach surface of Earth's evil twin planet. And there's Phaethon, the unusual asteroid that is the source of the Geminid meteor shower, and about which the mystery has deepened. Much further afield, there's new research on what leads to quasars, the energetic "burps" of galaxies as their central black holes gorge themselves on infalling gas. And finally, there's the mystery of the "impossible galaxies" seen in one of JWST's first ever images, which turn out to be, well, less impossible!

Welcome to this episode of SpaceTime, where we bring you some fascinating stories from the world of astronomy and space science. First up, astronomers have made an incredible discovery using an Artificial Intelligence program. They have found a supermassive black hole that is ripping apart a giant star in what is being called the brightest, most energetic, and longest-lasting stellar murder ever seen. This discovery has stunned the astronomy community, and we discuss the implications of this discovery. In our next story, we take a look at the weird asteroid Phaethon. A new study has claimed that the cometary tail generated by Phaethon is not dust, as previously thought, but rather sodium gas. We delve into the findings of this study and explore what it could mean for our understanding of this strange asteroid. Finally, we discuss the recent news of a dead NASA spacecraft crashing back to Earth. The spacecraft smashed into the ground in the northern African Sahara Desert, and we take a closer look at what happened and what we can learn from this incident. Plus The Science Report: Polar ice sheet melting records have toppled during the past decade. Scientists discover that a amphibian-killing fungus is more widespread than anyone had realized. Synopsis If the late 18th century is the “Classical Age,” and the 19th “The Romantic,” then perhaps we should dub our time “The Eclectic Age” of music. These days, composers can—and do—pick and choose from a wide variety of styles. The American composer William Bolcom was loath to rule anything out when he approached the task of setting William Blake's Songs of Innocence and of Experience to music. Bolcom calls for a large orchestra, multiple choruses, and more than a dozen vocal soloists versed in classical, pop, folk, country, and operatic styles. There are echoes of jazz, reggae, gospel, ragtime, country and rock idioms as well. As Bolcom put it: "At every point Blake used his whole culture, past and present, high-flown and vernacular, as sources for his many poetic styles. All I did was use the same stylistic point of departure Blake did in my musical settings.” The massive work received its premiere performance in Stuttgart, Germany, on today's date in 1984. Most of the work was completed between 1973 and 1982, after Bolcom joined the faculty of the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, and it was there that the work received its American premiere a few months following its world premiere in Germany. Prophecy Radio episode #59 does another Monster Guide, this time on pit scorpions (and all related materials). In addition, the hosts discuss all the latest news in the Riordanverse, though we're happy to report it looks like everyone took a break during Thanksgiving week here in the States, as well as reread and discuss Percy Jackson and the Last Olympian chapter 13. New episodes of Prophecy Radio air weekly, and all ages are welcome to tune in. News and Updates (00:02:00) There's not a lot of news this time, which is pretty nice after the last couple of weeks. Read Riordan posted an article asking what are the gods and demigods thankful for this year? Becky answers a question about whether more The Sun and the Star samplers will be available. We also learned that the book will be 480 pages long. Monster Guide: Pit Scorpions (00:06:41) In turns out pit scorpions are kind of generic monsters, BUT we did find some scorpion-related content to talk about. Hesiod wrote of Skorpios and Orion, and there are several different versions of this myth. But they were both put into the sky, and they never appear at the same time! We also learn all about the Skorpios constellation and how it relates to Kristen and Karen specifically. Oh, and do you know what the Skorpios constellation is called in a culture that is very specific and related to our interests?? Scorpio is associated with death and rebirth, and you know what? That just makes a lot of sense. Can you guess what planet rules this sign? Ovid also wrote about Phaethon, the son of Helios, and how he drove his father's chariot among the stars. It's interesting to think about what real life things this story tries to explain. But what about pit scorpions in Percy Jackson? Let's just say, we wouldn't want to battle this monster, like, ever. Percy is also super lucky to have survived being stung by one. Do the scorpions come out to play during any of the battles? Percy Jackson and the Last Olympian (00:19:12) It's time to talk about The Last Olympian chapter 13. Grover and Anya need to form a No Bunnies Allowed Club House. Would YOU have a snowball fight with a bunch of ice giants? We wonder how giants are usually portrayed throughout various pieces of media. Prometheus is a super interesting character, and we really liked his presence in the story. What advancement could Prometheus have given mankind? Can we actually trust what Prometheus is saying? That back-and-forth between Percy and Ethan was fantastic. This is Prophecy Count #28 because we make the rules. It couldn't have been easy for Luke to grow up with May as his mother. How did May end up the way she did? We might be skipping ahead here. Okay, we don't feel bad for Hermes here, but hear us out… We get a nice little Grover moment in this chapter. Who started the rumor that Pandora had a box!? Prometheus is very good at his job, and you know what really helps? He's not wrong. But you know who's worse than the Olympian gods. KRONOS! Percy was on FIRE this chapter! Figuratively speaking. Feedback (00:57:52) Thanks for your email, Edward! We love learning about the inconsistencies and mistakes throughout the books. Nicolaas gives us another Percy Jackson fun fact. Thanks for listening, and tune in next time for episode 60, where we'll talk about fanart, complete with a couple surprises! This episode's hosts are: Karen Rought and Kristen Kranz. Mark welcomes Stefanos Panagiotakis to the show. Stefanos Panagiotakis began his career as a Radio Officer in the Greek merchant navy in 1973 and retired in 1998. From 1979 to 1981 he became a member of the Greek UFO team “PHAETHON “and an independent reporter for the first Greek UFO magazine “ΙΠΤΑΜΕΝΟΙ ΔΙΣΚΟΙ / UFO “which published only 15 issues from April 1980. Later that year the UFO team “PHAETHON” became team “SIRIUS” and in March 1981 it published a new magazine entitled “ΑΣΤΡΙΚΗ ΕΠΑΦΗ / UFO”. Stefanos Panagiotakis was appointed as a researcher & investigator of UFO cases outside of Greece. Both the team “SIRIUS” and its associated magazine were active until April 1983. During this period Stefanos sent his reports from Mexico, Peru and of course his research from Pascagoula, which became a small book and was serialized in this UFO magazine in 6 parts. After his retirement, Stefanos worked on the adding of subtitles in Greek to more than 600 sci-fi films and similar TV series (mostly from the 50's, 60's and 70's). Today the author stills keeps himself informed of important events relating to the UFO phenomenon on a daily basis. This episode begins by delving into aesthetics with an exploration of the question: what makes great art great? Dagny returns to her apartment and listens to the music of Richard Halley. Jonathan analyzes the description of Halley's Fourth Concerto and explores the idea that the experience of pain is worse for those who see no purpose in it. Jonathan mentions the philosopher Viktor Frankl as a philosopher who writes on the purpose of suffering (especially in his book Man's Search for Meaning). The biography of Richard Halley engages with the trope of the tortured artist and Rand ends up harshly critiquing that trope. Jonathan makes an analogy between the Greek myth of Phaethon and the teenager who wrecks their dad's car. On the question of changing trends and shifting tastes in art, Jonathan compares the experience of Richard Halley to the way that Shakespeare varied in popularity over the centuries. The intrusion of the headline about Francisco d'Anconia is presented as a violation of the ethos of Halley's Fourth Concerto. My five themes to explore in this podcast's close read of Atlas Shrugged are:What is human nature?Straw-man arguments and their impact on the world Ayn Rand creates.Dagny Taggart as a true hero. How empathy can be de-legitimized.What is Capitalism and what is wrong with it? Questions or comments? I have talked a bit about Daguerre and his photographic methods in a previous episode about the world's first photobomb. Listeners may recall that the first photograph to feature a human happened by accident as Daguerre was taking a photograph of the view out his window. Those early photographs needed a long exposure. I'm talking around 15 minutes and few subjects could sit still for that long. This is why the first subjects of photos tended to be landscapes or still lives, you know, things that will be still for a long time. The plaster casts were a practical subject. They were also intended to send a message that photography was a new medium but it could handle the traditional subject matter. In this collection, we see an arrangement of casts of Venus, cupid, the wings, and heads of two cherubs. Above the cherub or putti heads which would have been associated with Phaethon son of Helios, we see the rams head, and the golden Ram in Greek mythology was a descendant of Helios, the sun god. Central to the composition, we see these references to Greek mythology making a connection between the new medium and classic subjects but more specifically, we are seeing references to the sun. When we break down photography, photo means light. Graphy is writing, The photographic process is making a picture with light. The sunlight triggers a chemical reaction causing silver compounds to darken. If you want to learn more about Daguerre and early photography, listen to my previous mini-episode about The World's First Photobomb.
