Today we discuss 6 preconditions of intelligence and show how each one points to the Christian God of scripture .

This lesson presents a presuppositional critique of 'imminent moralism'—a category of religions like Confucianism and Buddhism that prioritize moral codes for this life without appealing to transcendent authority. It argues that such systems fail the PIA (Preconditions of Intelligibility, Inconsistency, and Arbitrariness) test: they lack a transcendent foundation to justify moral absolutes, are inconsistent in their own teachings (e.g., rejecting souls while affirming karma), and are arbitrary in their claims to authority, as no human figure can objectively validate their moral codes. The lesson further shows that these religions cannot account for the uniformity of nature, the reliability of logic, or the possibility of moral transformation, and their historical consequences—such as rigid social hierarchies or suppression of scientific progress—reveal their practical failure. In contrast, Christianity alone provides a coherent worldview grounded in a personal, transcendent God who offers both objective moral law and the transformative grace of regeneration and justification, making it the only system capable of meeting the preconditions of intelligibility and offering true redemption.

Ralston College Humanities MA Dr John Vervaeke is a cognitive scientist and philosopher who explores the intersections of Neoplatonism, cognitive science, and the meaning crisis, focusing on wisdom practices, relevance realization, and personal transformation. Ralston College presents a lecture titled “Levels of Intelligibility, Levels of the Self: Realizing the Dialectic,” delivered by Dr John Vervaeke, an award-winning associate professor of cognitive science at the University of Toronto and creator of the acclaimed 50-episode “Awakening from the Meaning Crisis” series. He's a PhD candidate with Greg Pavliotis and Karl Friston jointly at Imperial College London and UCL, and a student in the Mathematics of Random Systems CDT run by Imperial College London and the University of Oxford. He completed an MRes in Brain Sciences at UCL with Karl Friston and Biswa Sengupta, an MASt in Pure Mathematics at the University of Cambridge with Oscar Randal-Williams, and a BSc in Mathematics at EPFL and the University of Toronto. Summary: Lance did pure math originally but became interested in the brain and AI. He started working with Karl Friston on the free energy principle, which claims all intelligent agents minimize free energy for perception, action, and decision-making. Lance has worked to provide mathematical foundations and proofs for why the free energy principle is true, starting from basic assumptions about agents interacting with their environment. This aims to justify the principle from first physics principles. Dr. Scarfe and Da Costa discuss different approaches to AI - the free energy/active inference approach focused on mimicking human intelligence vs approaches focused on maximizing capability like deep reinforcement learning. Lance argues active inference provides advantages for explainability and safety compared to black box AI systems. It provides a simple, sparse description of intelligence based on a generative model and free energy minimization. They discuss the need for structured learning and acquiring core knowledge to achieve more human-like intelligence. Lance highlights work from Josh Tenenbaum's lab that shows similar learning trajectories to humans in a simple Atari-like environment. Incorporating core knowledge constraints the space of possible generative models the agent can use to represent the world, making learning more sample efficient. Lance argues active inference agents with core knowledge can match human learning capabilities. They discuss how to make generative models interpretable, such as through factor graphs. The goal is to be able to understand the representations and message passing in the model that leads to decisions. In summary, Lance argues active inference provides a principled approach to AI with advantages for explainability, safety, and human-like learning. Speech intelligibility and listening effort both affect our ability to understand speech, but the relative contribution of these subjective factors is hard to disentangle. Previous studies suggest that speech intelligibility could be assessed with EEG speech tracking and listening effort via pupil size. However, these measures may be confounded, because poor intelligibility may require a larger effort. To address this we developed a novel word-detection paradigm that allows for a rapid behavioral assessment of speech processing. In this paradigm words appear on the screen during continuous speech similar to closed captioning. In two listening experiments with a total of 51 participants we manipulated intelligibility with changing auditory noise levels and modulated effort by varying monetary reward. Increasing signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) improved detection performance along with EEG speech tracking, suggesting improved intelligibility. Additionally, we find larger pupil size with increased SNR, suggestive of increased effort. Surprisingly, when we modulated both reward and SNR, we found that reward modulated only pupil size, while SNR modulated only EEG speech tracking. We suggest that this new paradigm can be used to independently and objectively assess speech intelligibility and listening effort. Copy rights belong to original authors. Abstract: The perception of amplitude modulations (AMs), which is characterized by a frequency-selective process in the modulation domain, is considered critical for speech intelligibility. Previous studies have provided evidence of an age-related decline in AM frequency selectivity, as well as a notable sharpening of AM tuning associated with hearing loss, possibly due to a perceptual advantage resulting from peripheral compression loss. This study aimed to examine whether speech intelligibility in noisy environments would support the following ideas: i) age-related declines in AM tuning might lead to poorer speech intelligibility, and ii) sharper AM tuning associated with hearing loss would not result in improved speech intelligibility. Young (n=10, 22-28 years) and older listeners with normal hearing (n=9, 57-77 years) as well as older listeners with hearing impairment (n=9, 64-77 years) were included in the investigation. All participants had previously taken part in studies on AM frequency selectivity. Speech intelligibility was tested in various listening conditions, including stationary, fluctuating, and competing-speech maskers. Consistent with the hypothesis, the results revealed an age-related increase in speech reception thresholds, with an additional negative impact of hearing loss. These findings motivate further exploration of the relationship between AM frequency selectivity and speech intelligibility in noisy environments. Copy rights belong to original authors. Abstract: Early assessment of hearing aid benefit is crucial, as the extent to which hearing aids provide audible speech information predicts speech and language outcomes. A growing body of research has proposed neural envelope tracking as an objective measure of speech, particularly for individuals unable to provide reliable behavioral feedback. However, its potential for evaluating speech intelligibility and hearing aid benefit in hearing-impaired children remains unexplored. This study examined neural envelope tracking in hearing-impaired children through two separate experiments. EEG data was recorded while children listened to age-appropriate stories (experiment 1) or an animated movie (experiment 2) under aided and unaided conditions (using personal hearing aids) at multiple stimulus intensities. Results in the delta band demonstrated that neural tracking increased with increasing stimulus intensity, but only in the unaided condition. In the aided condition, neural tracking remained stable across a wide range of intensities, as long as speech intelligibility was maintained. This suggests that acoustic degradation of the speech signal does not necessarily impact neural tracking. Additionally, the use of personal hearing aids significantly enhanced neural envelope tracking, particularly in challenging speech conditions (which would be inaudible when unaided). Furthermore, neural envelope tracking strongly correlated with behaviorally measured speech intelligibility. Altogether, these findings indicate that neural envelope tracking could be a valuable tool for predicting speech intelligibility benefits derived from personal hearing aids in hearing-impaired children. Incorporating narrated stories or engaging movies expands the accessibility of these methods even in clinical settings, offering new avenues for using objective speech measures to guide pediatric audiology decision-making.
