This week sees a big first for the Geek Warning podcast as the entirety of Escape Collective's tech crew meet up in person over in Takayama, Japan. With that, we recorded live in front of a select group of Escape members! It's certainly been a huge week on the tech front for our entire tech team to be away riding bikes at the annual Member Summit. Not only is the Vuelta a España in its first week (where new Dura-Ace prototypes were seen), we also had the last Mountain Bike World Cup round prior to the World Championships. And if that wasn't enough, MADE was held over in Portland, Oregon, the past weekend. Given the special circumstances, our usual member-only ‘Ask a Wrench' segment was replaced with an ‘Ask us anything' from the live audience. Be sure to listen on the member-only feed for the full episode. So with that, join the tech crew of Alex Hunt, Jack Duncan, Ronan Mc Laughlin, and Dave Rome to hear about the week in tech. And yes, Suvi Loponen was there, but sadly couldn't jump on the recording. Time stamps: 00:03:30 - New Dura-Ace R9300 breaks cover 00:23:00 - Leadville wasn't the expected 32er domination, and that doesn't matter 00:33:05 - Fox is seemingly returning to electronic suspension for cross-country 00:35:00 - Abbey Bike Tools' new budget disc brake mount facer isn't quite it 00:40:30 - Going into the member-only section with a live audience 00:42:00 - Ask us Anything! 00:44:00 - Are carbon spokes a fad? 00:50:00 - Silca's entry to tires 00:53:00 - Can grease be too thick? 00:55:00 - Is there any further tech that road should expect from MTB? 01:03:30 - How are we addressing the spectrum of gravel?
Silca claims to have found the fastest tyre compound for their new road and gravel tyres. While we debate some Cat 5 racers behave baldly. What are "junk" miles and Jesse has his quarterly crisis about the future of racing and riding.
We build durable cyclists. New performance videos every week on YouTube:
Marc Graveline is an aerodynamics consultant who works with WorldTour cycling teams as well as professional (e.g. Chelsea Sodaro, Lionel Sanders) and amateur triathletes, and road and gravel cyclists. He co-developed the Notio Konect, the first consumer on-bike aero sensor, and now develops his own device, the Gizmo. He also led the testing programme behind IRONMAN's decision to move the professional draft zone from 12 to 20 metres. We cover how to run an aero test you can actually trust, what to test and in what order, tyres and tyre pressure, and what IRONMAN's draft-zone testing actually found. HIGHLIGHTS AND KEY TOPICS: Why Marc disagrees with the idea that we have reached peak aero, and where he still sees the largest untapped gains across road racing, triathlon and gravel. Wind tunnel, velodrome or road: what each venue is good for, why he validates everything on the road, and where an age grouper without an unlimited budget should start. Building a road test you can trust: choosing a venue, how long an out-and-back should be, how many repeats, the ABBA protocol, and the single mistake that ruins more test sessions than anything else. The hierarchy of what to test, from position down to hydration, and where the biggest gains will come from. Why head position drives so much of the result, and why the change you make to your position is often not the thing that actually makes you faster. Helmets and skinsuits: which two helmets kept finishing first and second when 21 age groupers worked through a dozen of them at an aero camp, how heat and visibility should be weighed against the CdA number, and how much a custom skinsuit really buys you over one off the shelf. Tyres: what WorldTour riders on good roads are actually running for pressure, why erring on one side costs you more than the other, whether wider really is faster, and why a tyre that wins in the wind tunnel can still be the wrong choice for your race. The IRONMAN draft-zone testing: the stacking effect that showed up at 12 metres, what changed at 20, what those charts with no y-axis were actually trying to say, and the call to Magnus Ditlev's aerodynamicist that confirmed it in the real world. This week, Dave and Jack from the Escape Collective tech team talk modern cross-country bikes and where the nuance between race and downcountry sits. Plus, Dave shares why he believes remote lockouts are a race-day product. Meanwhile, the geeks discuss why rounded bolts are most often user error and how to avoid them (also check out Dave's Threaded #15 article on the topic). Like every week, members of Escape Collective (on the exclusive member-only feeds) get access to the full episode, including Ask a Wrench. In this episode, Kathryn and Kristi are joined by Tilly Scholl, a trailblazing photographer and cyclist who has carved a unique niche in the gravel scene. Tilly shares her unconventional journey from a cycling novice to a professional photographer, discussing how her background in film photography influences her intimate and soulful approach to storytelling. The conversation explores the significance of community support among women in gravel and the unique perspectives they bring to both racing and media, emphasizing authenticity and inclusivity across diverse age groups and backgrounds. Tilly also reflects on the challenges women face in race environments and the positive impact of brands like Silca in fostering genuine engagement through education. From her first experiences capturing the mud of Mid South to her transition into full-time professional photography, Tilly highlights the power of portraits in capturing the confidence and personal growth of riders. She provides a look behind the scenes at our Feisty Mechanic camps and discusses the importance of capturing lasting memories that empower women within the sport. Finally, the group looks ahead to the major events Tilly will be covering, including Leadville and Gravel Worlds, as she continues to advocate for a more visible and respected space for women in the cycling industry.Follow Tilly on Instagram @thistilly and check out her YouTube channel Tilly Show.Join us in Tuscon, AZ for our Feisty Women's Mechanic Camp and register at: https://www.wetravel.com/trips/women-s-bike-mechanic-camp-tucson-az-feisty-media-24985624#about-this-tripFeistyFest Info: https://www.wetravel.com/trips/feistyfest-feisty-media-1943243299#about-this-tripWomen's Mechanic Camp - Tucson: https://www.wetravel.com/trips/women-s-bike-mechanic-camp-tucson-az-feisty-media-24985624#about-this-tripCourses and Coaching: https://feisty.learnworlds.com/Follow us on Instagram:@feistycycling@feisty_mediaGirls Gone Gravel Website:https://www.girlsgonegravel.com/Support our Partners:Wahoo: Learn about the ELEMNT ROAM 3 at https://wahoofitness.pxf.io/6kn0EbMomentous: Use code GIRLSGONEGRAVEL for up to 35% off your first order at livemomentous.comTifosi: Use the code FEISTY2026 for 20% off at tifosioptics.comRegister for Feisty Fest at https://www.wetravel.com/trips/feistyfest-feisty-media-1943243299#about-this-trip
This week we got new Shimano R9300 Dura-Ace, although not quite the release many had wished for. Escape's senior tech editors, Dave Rome and Ronan Mc Laughlin, talk through this new release, the details that are easily overlooked, and where Shimano could do more.Ronan then shares what he saw while covering tech at the Tour de France and how perceived trends can often be false. Dave then raises the increasing problem of Large Language Models (aka, Ai answers) leading people astray in topics that have limited information available online. There's also a bit of interesting tech news from Silca and Tune.As per usual, members of Escape Collective also get Ask a Wrench. This week, Zach Edwards of the Boulder Groupetto joins Dave to cover topics such as noisy drivetrains, why aero isn't more prominent in downhill racing, and what we look for in good headset cable routing. Dylan, Adam, Tyler, and Dizzle break down the biggest moments, questionable decisions, and missed opportunities from the Tour. The crew debates Pogačar's race tactics, Jonas Vingegaard's performance, the confusing battle for the polka-dot jersey, and whether freezing the GC times took all the excitement out of the final stage. They also discuss how course design influences racing, why cycling fans want more aggressive and unpredictable stages, and whether the Tour's traditional ceremonial finish needs a serious overhaul. It feels like now more than ever it is important to find sources of information and reporting that are trustworthy. It used to be fairly easy: subscribe to a credible outlet and trust that said newspaper or magazine would have guardrails in place to get it right and to exercise fairness. As the internet and social media became the predominant sources we rely on, a lot of those guardrails were knocked down. It could be argued that the system in place now is more democratic. More wide open. More voices. But along the way the trust factor has taken a blow. That's why we wanted to talk to Ben Delaney. Ben came from the old school ways of cycling reporting. He got a degree in journalism. He got a job at a magazine. He did the work and made his way up. Like a lot of his colleagues, he also took his lumps as traditional outlets succumbed to the pressures of lower ad revenues and tighter budgets. After being let go more than once by Velo, Ben decided to go solo. These days you can find Ben making videos for his gravel focused "The Ride" YouTube channel. It's one of Josh's favorites, so much so that Silca supports the channel. "The Ride" is a great place to check the latest in dropbar, offroad tech and trends. But this interview is less about gear and much more about the landscape of cycling media. How it got to where it is and what it needs to keep its credibility.
A former collegiate middle distance runner, Paige had only ever ridden a bike to rehab injuries until that all changed in 2020. A few events on Zwift followed by some TT's and then her first ever mass start gravel event in 2021 was the beginning of a beautiful journey on the podiums at Unbound, Rule of Three, Gravel Nationals, and more. Her big break came after a solo win at Big Sugar a few years back where he meticulous prep and calm confidence proved she is a woman to be feared on the bike. I sat down with Paige at her home just outside of Bentonville, AK to talk all things gravel. Paige brings a unique perspective to the world of gravel given her long experience as a Physician's Assistant and a relative newcomer to the sport of cycling. We talked Valley of Tears, Mid South, cyclists and GLP-1's, plus a few games and fantasy drafts. Paige brings her scientific way of thinking to every decision on the bike and it was a treat to work through her process on everything from tire selection to race prep. What up party people. Welcome back for another episode of the Bonk Bros podcast and I hope you're not sick of Leadville talk just yet because we've got plenty more of that packed in this week. There's crashes, there's course records, there's controversial DQs, and Dylan's giant bag of emotions, plus plenty more so stay tuned for it. Shout out to everyone we ran into this past weekend while out in Cloud City, it's always so fun and cool to mingle with the fans and hear about some of your favorite takes from the show. Speaking of running into people, DJ and I also got to meet Adam Barker, founder of Bolt Skin + Shave, for the first time in person at their expo booth and he was stoked about how many of y'all mentioned hearing him guest appear on the show last week and stop by the booth to check out their products after. So thank y'all for that. And if you did stop by then you know that we weren't joking about how heavy those razor handles are (in a good way) so hopefully you picked one up so you too can get level up your shave game. Another big shout out to the Silca folks, always good catching up with them at the events, and I was even lucky enough to bring home some new hardware in the form of their Ultimate shock pump. Now, if y'all have been listening to this show for a while then you'll know I'm a pretty die hard SRAM boy so I was a little hesitant at first to step away from my trust Rockshox shock pump but let me tell you, this Ultimate shock pump is just a thing of beauty. Episode 163 – Leadville Bike Drops, Small Feet, and Shower Talk What up party people. Welcome back for another stacked episode of the Bonk Bros Podcast. We've got a guest appearance for y'all today so stay tuned for that to happen about halfway through the show. We get into some more pre-Leadville talk including more bike setup discussions, then we talk a little bit of Tour de France Femme, before getting into some listener questions and some foot stuff, oh yeah and DJ's big tire dilemma. Speaking of tires, ya boy just got my first set of road tires in the mail this week from our good friends over at Bike Tires Direct and boy howdy am I stoked. I haven't had a proper set of road tires probably since I sold my last road bike back in 2018. I actually still miss that Cannondale Supersix Evo but I digress. Now I know what you're thinking, wait if you don't have a road bike then what are you going to do with road tires?? Well, glad you asked because these aren't just your average 25mm road tires. Nah, I got me some 40mm Pirelli Zero Race tires that I'm going to swap onto one of my ENVE wheel sets for my MOG because I've been finding myself riding more pavement these days and the SWorks Pathfinders that I've been using as my “road tires” kinda just serve as crappy road tires to be honest. So I didn't want to go all the way to road size tires because I'm honestly just used to smashing into things after so many years without riding anything under 40mm that I was afraid I would just hate it. So, I'm going to slap these bad boys onto my MOG later today and give them a rip and report back on what I think. If you too want to pick up a slick set of road tires (or any tires for that matter) make sure to check out all that's on offer at biketiresdirect.com and use the code “bonkbros” for a sweet discount at the end. For updates on any and all of our supporting partners including the latest discount codes for y'all, check out the show notes each week so you can get access to some of our favorite items from partners like Silca and Bolt Skin+Shave, KetoneAid, or those amazingly intelligent lawyer folks over at Scarborough Bicycle Accident Law. Oh yeah one more thing, if you're just absolutely blown away every week by the incredible sound quality and seamless editing of not only the audio but also the video version over on YouTube, well surprise surprise that has nothing to do with any of us goons on the show and for that you are welcome. All AV magic takes place behind the scenes by our wonderful Taylor, who not only has to listen to the show while editing each week but she even sits in on the recordings to make sure and keep us in line, well mostly Drew that is. So huge shout to Taylor who doesn't get enough praise from us for doing the dang thing week in week out. Alright, I'll hop off the sap wagon now and let y'all get on with the show. Episode 162 – The Tour Finale and the Pre-Pre-Leadville 100 Gravel Race Episode What up party people. Welcome back for another fun episode of the Bonk Bros Podcast where we're talking about our thoughts on the Tour finale, getting into all things drop bars at the Leadville 100 Mountain Bike (I mean gravel) race, as well as our reaction to Dizzle's latest round of VO2max testing, and plenty more. As always, this episode is brought to you by some of our AMAZING partners who continue to stand by our side and bring you access to some of our favorite products that we use on the daily. For all of your bicycle tire and accessory shopping needs head over to Bike Tires Direct (or BTD as we call them) and use code “bonkbros” when checking out for a sweet little discount. BTD was kind enough to support the Crested Butte training camp that I co-hosted a few weeks ago and sent us a boat load of tires for the athletes to demo, along with some Silca sealant, and they also provided us with a couple of the newest head units from Garmin, the Edge MTB. We got to put these rugged little buggers to the test over the course of the week and one of the lucky campers even got to go home with one after we raffled it off at the end of camp. If you're in the market for a new bike computer and you're anything like me and constantly breaking these darn things then be sure to check out the Garmin Edge MTB head unit over at Bike Tires Direct. Next up if you're just sick of having to always pretend like you're buying razors for your wife at the store every time you run out of leg shavers, then check out the best razors for men who shave their legs from our friends over at BOLT Skin + Shave. And for an extra 15% off that silky smooth shave experience type in code BROS15 at checkout. That's Bolk Skin + Shave (code: BROS15) Oh yeah we've also got the lovely crew over at Silca, our longest running show sponsor who's always developing the latest in marginal gains products plus a whole bunch more. Silca too was a sponsor of the Crested Butte camp, setting us up with Crockpotanator 4000s, tons of Secret Blend wax and all the various chip additives, they made sure we were washing bikes in style every night with the Bike Spa treatment, plus they made sure each camper went home with some Super Secret wax drip lube. Check out any of these products and more over at Silca.cc and use the code “Bonkbrosjuly2025” for discount at checkout. Just a few more here for y'all. If you're still in the process of dialing in your training and racing fueling strategy (which you should always be doing) then you need to experiment with the magical powers of ketone esthers by the folks over at KetoneAid. Once you do, you'll quickly find that unlike the absolute monstrosity of sugary concoctions high carb drink mixes are, KetoneAid brings you a product that can be used for both on the bike and off the bike fueling to support overall lifestyle performance. Use ketones for things like enhancing cognitive function, improving recoverability and sleep, and even for that afternoon pick-me-up before you leave the office to head home and hammer out a training ride. Click the link in the show notes for free shipping. Speaking of hammering out rides, if you're serious about your fitness but just don't have the time or resources available to work with a coach, don't overlook the power of AI to help you curate an effective and easy to follow training plan for your situation. JOIN cycling wants to make sure that every rider has access to a training program just like that and even wants to offer you a FREE month of training when you can head to join.cc/campaigns/bonkbros or click the link in the show notes. Episode 161 - Big Name Tour Dropouts and Dizzle Cracked the Top 10(6) in Iceland! What up party people. I apologize for the sweat beading off my face, I just got back from a steamy rucking session over at the local ski hill and it's absolutely scorchin' out there. Luckily, I had all day fuel on board from our friends at KetoneAid so now I'm straight buzzin' and ready to get back to some good ol' computer work and house stuff. Speaking of friends at KetoneAid, I want to give a heartfelt thank you to all of y'all who continue to support the show with your hard earned dollars by picking up some of your favorite products from any number of our amazing show sponsors. We love hearing from our partners that y'all are straight up killing it with the use of those discount codes because it truly does help us keep this thing rolling. None of us have actually taken any pieces from the pie personally yet, however, having some play money allows us to do cool things like upgrade equipment when we need it, pay for professional producing so your boy doesn't have to go back to receiving hate mail every week for the shoddy edit jobs I was doing back in the old days, we also get to use those funds to come to events and meet with some of y'all in person (like Leadville in a few weeks, Chequamegon the month after, I'm sure a few of us will be down at Big Sugar again to witness Dylan having NOT fun at the gravel rave, and you better believe we're bringing the heat to the legendary Iceman in November). Also, if you stick around to the end of the show you'll hear a teaser for a new spin off podcast that will be launching here soon, so just another example of those funds going to cool things. That said, if you're new here I'll just quickly rattle off a few of our continued supporters so you can hop on the discount code train along with our boy Dizzle who's always shopping those sales. We've got the lovely crew over at Silca, our longest running show sponsor who's always mixing it up with fun discount codes to share with y'all with the latest code being “Bonkbrosjuly2025”. For that silky smooth shave experience check out our homies over at Bolk Skin + Shave (code: "BROS15") For all of your bicycle tire and accessory shopping needs head over to Bike Tires Direct (or BTD as we call them) and use code “bonkbros” Just a couple more here for y'all like I mentioned at the top of the show KetoneAid who is killing the game in ketone energy (link in the show notes: https://ketoneaid.com/?utm_source=BonkBros). JOIN CYCLING, the latest AI training platform to come in and help get you faster on the bike (and hopefully healthier off the bike too). Head over to join.cc/ bonkbros to check out their programs. And last one for today is the Bicycle Accident Law. Spearheaded by Matthew Scarborough, who is with you on every ride, for better or worse. We take a look at what has become a dilemma for some Marginal Gains seekers and that is optimizing aero, rolling resistance on a tubeless, hookless rim. Josh has an admittedly unpopular take on the subject. We also get into the aerodymanic idea known as the Magnus Effect. The principle says that a spinning object will develop unequal pressure on either side as it moves throught air. Josh expains how -- if at all -- the Magnus Effect, affects that rotating thing we love; the bicycle wheel. We also have questions on hot waxing in a vacum oven, the aero cost of external cables, and what is kind of a Silca product shocker: it's Ultimate Shock Pump.

Payson and Sarah made it back to Bend. They may be a bit more haggard than they were at the beginning of the race, but that hasn't dampened their enthusiasm. They sit down to talk about how the final stage played out, including all the tactics that went into the series overall standings. Then, they bring in Sarah's husband Dylan to talk about his week, which involved a lot of mountain biking and car maintenance. Lastly, Nichole hops on the mic to talk about winning the women's open category, learning about road tactics the hard way, and the fueling faux pas that left her extra dehydrated. Payson and Sarah had two very different experiences on day four of the Oregon Trail Gravel Grinder. They recap their respective miseries and triumphs on this second-to-last day, discuss how things are shaping up in the overall standings, and talk about the literal run-in with wildlife that left the racers shaken. They also talk about Dylan's victory at the hot dog eating contest, the greatest gift Sarah ever received (an ice skating costume), liquified shower curtains, and, just in case you thought this wasn't an educational program, they offer their top tips on recovering during stage races. Stage 3 saw the riders heading out for an enduro day that turned out to be very heavy on the climbing. Skyler Taylor, who won the men's stage, joins Payson and Sarah to talk about how he managed to reel in Cam Jones who has so far dominated the race with his power and descending skills. He also talks about deciding to leave his full-time job to focus on gravel this year, which he quickly followed through on by winning a wild card spot in the Grand Prix. Plus, Sarah talks about why time has never been her strong suit.Today's episode is presented by SILCA. Use code: withpaceoregontrail to get 15% off. After the punishing 94.7 miles of stage two, Payson and Sarah sit down with Cécile Lejeune, who is currently duking it out for first place in the overall despite having raced fewer than 10 gravel races in her entire career. They recap the day, which included multiple crashes, plenty of interpersonal drama, and a few good samaritans. They also talk about Sarah's issue with Cécile's snack choices, the multiple jobs Cécile holds down when she's not racing, and whether running (her first sport) features as much social intrigue as gravel. Plus, Cécile and Sarah teach Payson a lesson in humility. Today's episode is presented by SILCA. Use code: withpaceoregontrail to get 15% off. As the dust settles on stage one of the Oregon Trail Gravel Grinder, Payson and Sarah sit down to talk about the punishing 80 miles from Bend to Gilchrist. This is a fairly long episode for members of Escape Collective (go here). Those on the member-only podcast feed won't just hear what's new, but rather will hear some criticism of Zipp's new built-in pressure gauges and whether the company has addressed Ronan's concerns about hookless. As always, members also get our Ask a Wrench segment, which this week sees Dave Rome and pro race mechanic Brad Copeland answer a handful of questions related to disc brakes, along with one about the trend to toward wide gravel tyres and where suspension comes into that. Beware: this episode of Velo Podcast is a packed one. Amstel Gold has to be one of the best races of the year, and this year was no exception. In this latest episode of the Velo Podcast, we talk about Skjelmose winning Amstel Gold, Mischa Bredewold taking the win at Women's Amstel Gold. They also preview Liège-Bastogne-Liège and discuss Remco's 100-percent win record at The Old Lady; two starts, two victories! Can he do it again against the likes of Pidcock, Pogi, and Van der Poel? We had a whole suite of super nerdy and fun questions ready to ask Josh...and we will still ask them, next time. But we also wanted to know Josh's thoughts about how the newly-announced tariffs might affect Silca, the businesses it buys from and sells to, and its customers. The resulting unscripted conversation is a must-listen.
If you grew up or currently live and ride bikes in a town with any sort of population, we bet there's either a group ride of some sort that just happened or will be happening in a few days. Maybe it starts from the local bike shop, or maybe it starts from the go-to coffee shop. Some rides are a chill Sunday spin that's gone on uninterrupted for the past two decades, while others are the three-hour World Championship ride with 50 of the local meatheads. We do our best to define these group tries, describe what motivates these rides, and how to find your ideal group ride, even if that means starting one yourself. Of course, we also dig into the news. That means talking about how the UCI handed out a last-minute ban on a Kask helmet visor that the Ineos Grenadiers have used for years, and talking to the team to find out what happened. Then came the sealant conversation. Silca is so certain of its sealant working headache-free that the brand has promised to pay a $500 Bad Day Bonus to its sponsored athletes who get punctures that don't seal. We dove into why it is so confident in its new Ultimate Sealant. All of that and more in the latest podcast! See more from Velo: https://velo.outsideonline.com/featured
