What is often not discussed, however, is how these "unassigned lands" came to be. Many of you will know Bobby Wintle as the larger than life figurehead of District Bikes and MidSouth Gravel (formerly Land Run 100). That's how I knew him too until my interview with Dr. Seth Wood, when I learned how he had donated a portion of the proceeds from the very first Land Run to help with Seth's medical bills, and then continued to foster than relationship to this day. Hearing that story told me there was a lot more to Bobby than just great hair, a perfect smile, a great hugger, and I was eager to hear his side of the story. Just a month after my interview with Seth I found myself back in Stillwater, OK across a picnic table at Lake McMurtry from Bobby Wintle with a bottle of fine bourbon for us to share. And share we did! After fours hours, and almost a full bottle of bourbon later, we pushed stop on the recorder. What we captured that evening is a side of Bobby that I think few get to see because he is so busy and has so much demand on his time. It's a rare thing these days to be locked into a conversation with someone in this manner. It's why I love long form conversations, you can't fake it for 4 hours (especially not when borbon is involved), so what you get is a truly authentic window into who a person is. I appreciate Bobby so much for his willingness to honestly and authentically share so much of himself on this episode. It was an absolute pleasure getting to know him and I'm so stoked he's on Team Bike. For this episode I recommend you schedule a long bike ride, or pull up a chair and pour a glass of your favorite drink, and join Bobby and I for our conversation at Lake McMurtry.... I'll see you there! These shows aren't possible without your support! This episode was captured on a recent podcasting trip to Oklahoma. Thank you to our newest sustaining Patrons!

Originally designed as a theater, the Pavilion included a stage where everything from boxing matches to community theater musicals was held. The Pavilion was officially retired and transformed into the Top of Oklahoma Museum in the 1970's. The building is officially listed in the Oklahoma National Register of Historic Places. The museum offers: A military room, honoring Oklahoma's military men and women at a local and state level from World War I to now. A Native American room featuring artifacts and artwork from Oklahoma's diverse Native American population and their culture, including artwork from Kay County artist Alice Souligny as well as portraits from famed photographer William S. Prettyman, who actually served as Mayor for the City of Blackwell Displays of one-of-a-kind antique items from Blackwell's extensive history of shops and local attractions, which served to pave the way for how far we've come. Various rooms decorated to be period-accurate. These "living" dioramas are filled with antique furniture, books, clothing items, and household devices to reflect life in the early 1900's on the plains. Rare photographs and portraits dating back to the Land Run, including an iconic snapshot of Amelia Earhart accepting the "Key to the City" after a stay in Blackwell just before her mysterious disappearance over the sea. Huge thanks to Ted for coming onto the podcast! Quick show notes: Catching up on the two races that I was in with Ted King, one wayyy back in the roadie life, and my first gravel race, 2019 Land Run. Ted’s trajectory and evolution of going through the early roadie ranks. Being in the moment, whether cycling or life. Maybe not thinking of the “next thing”. Cognition of retirement from the road during his last season with Cannondale-Garmin. Getting philosophical with Ted King. The acuteness of cycling today; are you a specialist? Inspiration and motivation from his previous teammates. Grand Tours and One Day Classics; a world apart in terms of experience. What does Ted love apart 10 day stage races? Tire sizes. 38, 42, 44…and MORE!! Damn, I was over-inflating my tires. Ted’s move from road to gravel and having some sponsors reach out to him, and Rebecca Rusch taking him under her wing. DIRTY KANZA / Unbound Gravel King Family Racing! Ted’s first Grand Tour Peter Sagan doing no-handed wheelies up gravel while everyone else is redlining in Italy. Tangents…THOR HUSHOVD! Or, way less of it than most of us are used to from road racing. Gravel takes the difficulty up a notch. For gravel race you need to be able to consistently pedal a bike for a very long time. Many of these races are 100 miles or more, so you really need a 100 mile gravel training plan. Remember, your training needs to reflect the demands of your racing, and we’ll get to why it’s not just going to be a sweet spot group ride out there! Cue VO2Max work!

MC-ing the discussion is gravel racer extraordinaire Yuri Hauswald, and he brings us through all the major topics affecting gravel cycling and racing today. Everything from why gravel is so hot right now, how they've built their races so big (or why they've chosen not to), getting more women to show up and how the industry can do better, and what effect it'll have when the pros really start showing up and crushing us mere mortals. It's a lot, running a hair over two hours, so we split this into two parts. If you want to know what the state of gravel riding and racing is, this conversation will both enlighten and entertain! May 15, 2018 Riding Gravel Podcast Show Page This episode is brought to you by TravelKS.com JensonUSA ------- ABOUT THE EPISODE Bobby Wintle is co-owner of District Bicycles in Stillwater, Oklahoma and the main instigator at the Land Run 100. He was out at Sea Otter doing some work, having some fun, and spreading his endless energy. He sat down with Ben and chatted about life out in the Tour Divide, giving hugs at the Land Run, owning a bike shop, and more. Be sure to mark your calendars for March 15-16, 2019. About the Land Run 100: “These roads have a depth of history, and a soul. They are unique, unforgiving, ever-changing, but always red. On April 22, 1889, cannon-fire signaled the beginning of the first Land Run in Stillwater, OK, the home and start/finish line of the Land Run 100. At the heart of this event are some of the most rugged and daunting, beautiful and memorable roads in the Oklahoma country. They take on a personality of their own. But they are also marked by the people who travel far and work hard to ride them. Making yourself a part of these roads makes them a part of you.” If you have any questions, comments, or have an idea for an episode, please feel free to contact us anytime. ------- RELATED SHOW NOTES TravelKS.comJensonUSA Kansas Mini Guide Sea Otter Classic Land Run 100 website Land Run 100 on Facebook Land Run 100 on Instagram #Unlearnpavement Bobby on Instagram District Bicycles website District Bicycles Facebook District Bicycles InstagramJocko Willink – “Good”Vittoria on InstagramBuddy Pegs Media Riding Gravel ForumInterested in sponsoring an episode? Plus, Spencer has a rundown of his trip to Oklahoma for the Land Run 100 gravel race. He didn't end up scraping peanut-butter mud off his bike with a paint stirrer, but it was still an epic day on the bike.

November 18, 2016 Destination MTB Show Page/ ------------ ABOUT THIS EPISODE: Bobby Wintle race director of Land Run 100 and owner of District Bicycles sits down with Matt to discuss the 2017 Land Run 100. They cover how the race has grown and transformed over the last 5 years, why Bobby and Crystal chose to #unlearnpavement, and what to expect in 2017 at the Land Run 100. About Land Run 100: From Bobby "The roads in which you will be riding have a history and a soul that breathes deep. These roads are infinitely red, unforgiving, and unique. On April 22, 1889, the cannons fired signaling the first Land Run that opened up the Unassigned Lands of the Oklahoma Territory, which included Stillwater, OK the home and start/finish line of the Land Run 100. Oklahoma may seem like the last place you would consider traveling to for an event…until now. If you love roads that change every time you ride them, and seem to take on their own personality, Land Run 100 is the event for you." Registration will open on Saturday, November 19th and will be limited to a combined field total of 1,000 participants for the 100 and 50 mile option. If registation is full please add yourself the wait list as registered people will inevitably have conflicts that arise between now and race day.  For the first time ever the midway checkpoint will be in Guthrie, OK on a course that is 100% planned, preridden, and approved by Bobby. The second episode of the Riding Gravel Radio Ranch is one for the ages! Guitar Ted and Ben are joined by Bobby Wintle, who is the owner of District Bicycles in Stillwater, Oklahoma and the director of the very popular Land Run 100. They start off the episode with a recap of what has been happening behind the scenes of Riding Gravel since the announcement of the merger and then get into a lengthy discussion with Bobby about a full range of topics. Bobby shares the full story of how he and his wife started District Bicycles and why it's not named Bike Love. He tells the tales about the risk he, his wife, and young daughter took on when they left Kansas with minimal money and all of their possessions to start a new life in an unfamiliar city. Bobby is clearly a passionate guy who loves to share his enthusiasm for bikes with anyone willing to join him. His start in cycling was in Emporia, Kansas, the hometown of the Dirty Kanza, and he has combined those early experiences with his passion and enthusiasm to create #UNLEARNPAVEMENT. Bobby shares the story behind #UNLEARNPAVEMENT and gives listeners something to consider. Guitar Ted and Bobby also share some great insights into the "gravel movement," including where it's been, where it's going, and what the community is all about.
