He has had a long and distinguished high school coaching career that includes stops at Beechwood High School and Campbell County High School. Though he had other stops earlier in his career, Rick called Boone County HS home for over 25 years. He served as the Defensive Coordinator for 11 seasons before being named Head Coach in December of 1997. In his lone season away from Boone County in 1988, Thompson served as a Defensive Graduate Assistant for Dave Currey at the University of Cincinnati working with the Defensive Line. As the head coach at Boone County for 15 years, Coach Thompson was the head coach twice for the NKY All-Star game, was on the Best of the Bluegrass All-Star Game coaching staff (2012). He helped direct his high school team to two state semifinal appearances, five regional finals, and five district championships. Thompson is a graduate of Northern Kentucky University and earned his master’s degree from Xavier University. He is happily married to his wife Mary Kay and has two children, Chloe and Bryson.
