As we step into the new year - whether you're leaping into it action and going after your dreams, or taking a Slowanuary approach to the start of the year - I wanted to give you a big dose of inspiration - something to remind you of the magic we hold as human beings, when we embrace wonder, play and possibility, to encourage you to use that magic this year. And who better to guide us in rediscovering that magic than the International Woman of Wonder herself, Tiu de Haan? Tiu is a ritual designer, creative facilitator, and idea doula who has worked with an incredible range of clients over the past 20 years - from Google and the UN to L'Oréal and the Ministry of Justice. Her work involves creating transformative rituals and experiences that help people play, get creative, and shift their perspectives in profound ways. But today, we're diving into a story that even Tiu, someone who lives and breathes magic, wonder and transformation, describes as one of the most extraordinary, life-changing experience she's ever had…On the 24th May 2024, Tiu was immersed in a 36 hour transformational experience that had been created by 15 strangers who had spent months studying her, interviewing her, her friends and family so that they could create a unique and transformational experience solely for her - an experience so personal that no one else, not even the creators, witnessed it in its entirety. When Tiu first told me about it, I was amazed and baffled in equal measure. How incredible for fifteen strangers to dedicate so much time to creating a one day transformative experience for someone they didn't even know, when they weren't even getting paid for it. But why did they do it? And most important of all, what happened during those 36 hours, because Tiu really did come back profoundly changed by the experience. And so she suggested we hit record and she share every detail of this remarkable journey. And so that is what we did.In this episode we explore:* What Odyssey Works is all about and why they go around getting strangers to spend months creating a one-off experience for an audience of one. Free of charge.* How Tiu got picked to be that audience of one and why she wanted to do it.* How the experience unfolded step by step—and how it utterly transformed Tiu's life. This is the longest episode I have ever put out into the world, but I didn't want to cut it down because every moment of this story needed to be told. Plus I figured, as we ease ourselves gently into a new year, why not immerse ourselves into a long juicy conversation about the power of collaboration, creativity, play, transformation, wonder and giving? So, without further ado, here's my conversation with the extraordinary Tiu de Haan. Enjoy - and don't forget to check the show notes for links to everything we discuss, including The Odyssey, Tiu's work, and the powerful track by VLMV.Let's dive in!x SelinaP.S. The Story of the Magi from the east is an echo of the ancient, pagan world. We take Christian history for granted and forget the power of the ancient, pagan world and the influence of the East on the Western World. A good example is that the ancient Babylonians named the weekdays after the five planetary bodies known to them and the other two days they dedicated to the Sun and Moon (Sunday and Monday). The Jews, of course, explained the seven days of the week differently. The Romans followed the Babylonian example, not the Jewish, and the Emperor Constantine established the seven-day week in the Roman calendar in 321 A.D. designating Sunday and Monday as the first two days of the week. The names of our days of the week came later in European history. The other English weekday names were derived from Anglo-Saxon names for gods from Teutonic mythology. Tuesday comes from Tiu, or Tiw, the Anglo-Saxon name for Tyr, the Norse god of war. Tyr was one of the sons of Odin, or Woden, who in turn gave his name to Wednesday. Thursday originates from Thor, the god of thunder. Friday is derived from Frigga, the wife of Odin, representing love and beauty. Saturday comes from Saturn, the ancient Roman god of fun and feasting. We kept Sunday in honor of the Sun and Monday in honor of the moon. The echoes of the pagan world are all around us. A blast from the past. This episode played three years ago. The Feast of the Epiphany celebrates the mass conversion of the pagan world to the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. The worship of the Creator, not the created. Readings: https://bible.usccb.org/bible/readings/010823.cfm The music is licensed under One License and is performed by the St. Mark Choir.

This week on Freedom Matters we are taking a break from recording, and sharing with you instead an episode from one of our favourite podcasts, Digital Habit Lab from Mind Over Tech. Hosted by Menka Sanghvi, this podcast welcomes guests from different walks of life to observe how we use tech; reflect on how it sometimes uses us; and experiment on ways to make sure it is actually helping us to do what we most value in life. In this episode, Menka interviews Tiu de Haan, a ritual designer, creative facilitator, idea doula and ‘serendipiter'. She curates and creates experiences designed to shift your perspective to see the wonder in the world, helping people to birth their creative ideas and design their own unique path filled with moments of meaning. They discuss the question: Why is it so hard to be intentional in our digital activity? In exploring this question, Menka and Tiu talk about how easily we get into routines (repeated behaviours) that we may even become addicted to, and how rituals can help shift this. A ritual creates a pause in our routine activity, elevating a moment into something bigger and more meaningful. Tiu describes ritual as a “container for emotion, reflection, transition, and sometimes celebration” - a subject she has talked about in more depth in her TED Talk. Leslie Rogers, who is the Director of the Intercultural Development Office here at Trinity, joins Dr. Joshua Jipp and Dr. Michelle Knight for a conversation. The IDO serves to “promote unity in diversity through engaging students in each of their journeys through identity development, spiritual formation, and intercultural competency,” and Leslie's brilliant vision and commitment helps make it the beautiful place that it is.Josh and Michelle begin by asking Leslie about her story, a truly inspiring account of how she originally did not want to attend university but was inspired to do so by Rev. Dr. Charlie Dates (a friend of the pod!). During her time, positive interactions with professors and nourishment from her community helped her to find an inroad in academic study, ultimately earning both her undergraduate degree and MDiv at Trinity. During this time, Leslie developed a passion for developing leaders with a special focus not so much on garnering a platform but in shaping their character in the entirety of who they are. Being well-acquainted with the school, Leslie also shares what she considers to be the blessings and shortcomings of being at TIU. She loves the togetherness and proximity a Christian university offers, but realizes that there is a challenge to being a Black woman in an evangelical institution, especially in its limitations with regard to offering students of color an opportunity to learn deeply from their own communities. She helpfully provides some advice for those facing similar challenges, assuring students that God sees them, validates them, and grants them dignity and worth. She also recommends having designated places of “refilling” in order to avoid being burnt out.Along the way, listeners will also discover…Which Foreword spouse has preached alongside LeslieHow good of a cook Michelle really isThe value and benefit of having a good community as one studiesLeslie's directorship of the Intercultural Development Office is truly impressive, and you can learn more about it here. Danielle looked at sibling trilogies or series in books: Talia Hibbert's Brown Series, of course, but also Nora Roberts' Chesapeake Bay series (which has some found family elements! More on that later), Alexis Daria's new series has three cousins. In historicals, you have Julia Quinn's Bridgertons and Grace Burrowes's Windhams, which span generations.
