Aclara Resources Inc. chief financial officer Francois Motte talked with Proactive about the company's collaboration with the US Department of Commerce. This partnership aims to identify an ideal location in the United States for Aclara's planned rare earth separation facility. This facility would play a key role in strengthening the US supply chain for critical minerals, addressing a strategic need for North American mineral independence. Motte emphasized the Department of Commerce's role in analyzing various US states for optimal conditions, including accessibility to necessary reagents, trained labor availability, proximity to industrial infrastructure, and favorable permitting conditions. Highlighting the importance of a dry climate for processing needs, Motte explained that these elements could drive down operational costs and enhance efficiency for the proposed facility. He added that Aclara's projects in Chile and Brazil are expected to supply the plant with a high concentration of heavy rare earth materials, including dysprosium—a mineral critical for energy transition technologies. With environmental, logistical, and technical requirements in mind, Aclara Resources is also coordinating with US agencies, including the Department of Energy and the Department of Defense, to support its venture. Motte described these efforts as a parallel stream alongside technical advancements in separation technology, in collaboration with Virginia Tech University, to build an integrated pilot facility. “This facility is essential to creating an alternative supply chain in a critical industry,” said Motte, highlighting Aclara's commitment to bolstering U.S. mineral independence. “Precision nitrogen management for improving yield and protein content in wheat” with Dr. Olga Walsh. Nitrogen is one of the most important nutrients for crops, which is required in large amounts for crop production and demands precise nutrient management methods due to its highly mobile property in plants and soils and high chances of leaching. Precise nutrient management is also important for improving the yield and quality of grains, minimizing the input, and maximizing the efficiency. Assessing the real-time plant growth, biomass production, and nutrient depletion in the soil using different precision agriculture techniques like drones, remote sensing, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), and other camera-based devices helps optimize nutrient management. In this episode, Dr. Olga Walsh shares her research on precision nitrogen management for yield and protein content estimation on spring wheat and sugar beet by using different hand-held sensors, drones, and remote sensing approaches. Tune in to learn more about ·         What values are best to look for when doing remote sensing in wheat ·         How drones, remote sensing, and camera applications are helping predict biomass and nutrient requirements ·         What yield and protein content was estimated from the sensors tested ·         How hand-held and UAV sensors compare If you would like more information about this topic, this episode's paper is available here:  https://doi.org/10.1002/agg2.20309 This paper is always freely available. The early history of satellite broadcast has a Gemini aspect: twin origins in the research and development laboratories of major American corporations, and in the homes and workshops of legions of grassroots tinkerers across North and South America, notably in the Caribbean. These two streams crossed in the 1980s. Companies like RCA tried to build the infrastructure and market for satellite television but failed to find cost-effective designs for consumer satellite dishes. Meanwhile grassroots innovators and activists found ways to mass-produce inexpensive satellite dishes but were blocked from accessing the corporate broadcast signal. “Pirated” satellite television was born. Fabian Prieto-Nañez, assistant professor of Science, Technology, & Society at Virginia Tech University, uncovers this history in his latest research. Using the RCA collection held in the Hagley Library and pairing its “institutional voice” with the voices of small-time innovators he has discovered in the Caribbean, Prieto-Nañez argues that the modern market for satellite television rests upon the twin foundations of corporate investment and individual creativity. This network of social and technical actors combined over time to produce a new market. In support of his work Prieto-Nanez received funding from the Center for the History of Business, Technology, & Society at the Hagley Museum & Library. In this episode of the ESG Insider podcast, we're returning to the topic of gender diversity, exploring what the data shows us about the path to parity in leadership positions.   Most studies paint a discouraging picture, but new research from S&P Global finds that women could reach parity in senior leadership positions in the 2030s, among companies in the Russell 3000 Index. We speak to Daniel J. Sandberg, Head of Quantamental Research at S&P Global Market Intelligence, who conducted the data analysis for the research.  "It points to an emerging development and a bright spot amongst what may be an otherwise bleak background," Daniel tells us.   We also speak to Cynthia Devers about challenges on the road to gender parity in leadership positions. Cynthia is the R. B. Pamplin Professor of Management in the Pamplin College of Business at Virginia Tech University, where she has conducted research on women CEOs.  "The only way that I see of us getting out of that situation and trying to get closer to parity is by firms really making a commitment to it — and by shareholders voicing their opinions about it," she tells us.   You can read the latest research from S&P Global here: https://www.spglobal.com/esg/insights/featured/special-editorial/breaking-boundaries-women-poised-for-milestone-achievement-in-parity-amid-otherwise-bleak-outlook  You can read research from S&P Global Sustainable1 on women in CEO roles here: https://www.spglobal.com/esg/insights/featured/special-editorial/the-path-to-gender-parity  Listen to all the episodes in our Women in Leadership podcast series here: https://www.spglobal.com/esg/insights/featured/special-editorial/women-in-leadership   Read more research from S&P Global on gender diversity here: https://www.spglobal.com/esg/insights/featured/special-editorial/women-ceos-leadership-for-a-diverse-future   And here: https://www.spglobal.com/en/research-insights/featured/special-editorial/when-women-lead-firms-win   To learn more about what to expect from Climate Week NYC, listen to the ESG Insider podcast here: https://www.spglobal.com/esg/podcasts/what-to-expect-from-climate-week-nyc-2023   Learn more about the event S&P Global Sustainable1 is hosting during Climate Week NYC here: https://www.spglobal.com/esg/events/climate-week-2023?utm_source=web&utm_medium=podcast&utm_campaign=podcast   Copyright ©2023 by S&P Global    DISCLAIMER          This piece was published by S&P Global Sustainable1, a part of S&P Global.    By accessing this Podcast, I acknowledge that S&P GLOBAL makes no warranty, guarantee, or representation as to the accuracy or sufficiency of the information featured in this Podcast. The episode highlights the significance of choosing equity to create a just and inclusive environment.   In this episode, we want to help individuals better understand diversity, equity, and inclusion. As we live in a highly diverse society, encompassing various backgrounds and identities. Equity, on the other hand, is a choice, and it involves treating individuals fairly and providing them with what they need to succeed, rather than treating everyone the same. We all have different skills, and it's all different too. My way of presenting isn't other people's ways of presenting." - Blane Harding   "Diversity is a fact. Equity is a choice. Inclusion is an action. Belonging is an outcome." - Abraham Sculley   "Equity is fairness, and equality is sameness." - Blane Harding   "If you're of good character, you believe in fairness, and if you believe in fairness, then you believe in equity." - Blane Harding   "If it's personal and emotional, it's a choice. If you are of good character, you believe in fairness, and if you believe in fairness, then you believe in equity." - Abraham Sculley   "You've got to take your time, and it's going to be, it's going to happen, but you gotta take your time. You always gotta check in." - Abraham Sculley   "You would never put one person in charge of anything else on a college campus that's that large, except diversity and equity." - Blane Harding   "So I think it's the staffing. I think it's the financing to be quite honest. I also think it's the education." - Blane Harding   "Do we really want you here? Do we really need you here? Do we really need your talent and your skills and your experience and everything that you can contribute? And the obvious answer is yes. Why leave people out?" - Abraham Sculley   "I think the work I do is really important. I think I contribute as much as I can or as little as I can at any time." - Blane Harding   "There are so many people out there that have no clue what they're doing. If you go to that type of a presentation, you will never ever go back." - Blane Harding   "Anybody can put together a presentation, but can you answer questions afterwards?" - Blane Harding   "Getting people on board that are on that fence, that really don't know which way they're going to go. I'm either going to hate it, or I'm going to love it." - Blane Harding Connect with Blane via the following:   Email: blaneharding22@gmail.com  LinkedIn: http://www.linkedin.com/in/blane-harding     Unlearn the Lies About Mental Health is Hosted by Abraham Sculley.   Contact Speaks 2 Inspire to learn about S2I programs: https://speaks2inspire.com/services/. The ultimate Nacho platter as the woman than served her entire family directly from that Unusually Large Bowl.. aka Kiddie Pool.
